QR codes may not be as prolific as they once were, but they’re still highly useful for quickly sharing information. The thing is, it’s not always clear how to scan one. If you’re an Android user, here’s the skinny.

The Easiest Way: Use Google Lens in the Assistant

You may not realize this, but if your phone has Google Assistant, you have a fast, easy, and native way to scan QR codes baked right into your handset.

First, long-press the home button to bring up Assistant.

How to scan qr codes on an android phone

Depending on which version of Assistant you have, you might have the Lens button right there as soon as Assistant pops up. Most likely, however, you need to tap on it to stop it from listening for a voice command. Just tap on the colored dots.

Once it stops listening, new options become available: Lens to the left of the mic, keyboard to the right. Tap on the “Lens” button.

If this is the first time you’ve used Lens, you’ll need to activate it. Just follow the prompts and then grant it camera access. On the first run, it’ll give you a quick rundown of things you can do with Lens.

Just swipe that away and move the QR into the camera’s view. Within seconds, it will show you what the QR is—just tap on it to execute. So, in our test case, tapping the QR navigates to howtogeek.com.

Option Two: Use the Google Lens App

Some may argue that this is actually easier than option one, and to that, I say…maybe. The only reason I consider the first option to be easier is that your phone already has it—pretty much all modern Android handsets come with Assistant, so there’s no need to install another app.

But if you’re all about installing other apps, then here you go.

First, fire up the Google Play Store and hit up the Google Lens page. Install that bad boy.

How to scan qr codes on an android phone

Once installed, you’ll need to give it permissions and whatnot (assuming you haven’t already done so within Assistant).

From there, just scan your QR code.

Done and done. Now, whenever you need to scan a QR, fire up Lens and get it done. So fast.

Those square barcode-looking things? Here’s how they work with your Android smartphone.

Lead Editor, CNET Advice, Europe; Lead Photographer, Europe

Andrew is CNET’s go-to guy for product coverage and lead photographer for Europe. When not testing the latest phones, he can normally be found with his camera in hand, behind his drums or eating his stash of home-cooked food. Sometimes all at once.

QR codes (Quick Response, if you’re curious) are those square barcode-looking things you might have seen that, when scanned by your Android smartphone or iPhone , can send you immediately to a relevant webpage or download an app without having to type in a complicated URL.

They can be great time-savers but they’re not always obvious in how to use them, particularly if you have an older Android phone. Here’s what you need to know.

New Android phone? Your camera might scan them automatically

As QR codes have become more common, more manufacturers have built QR scanners directly into the default camera app. Samsung’s Galaxy S21 will read them, as will the Pixel 5 , but other phones — particularly older models — may not.

Give it a try: Scan this QR code with your phone’s camera.

You can easily find out if your phone does this by opening the camera and pointing it at the QR code above (load this article later on a different device if you’re reading this on your phone). If your camera supports it by default then a small link will appear on screen to take you to CNET.com.

If not, you’ll need to download a QR code scanner.

Got a scanner? Scan that code!

While there are loads of QR scanners available for free in the Google Play store, the best option is Google’s own Google Lens, which offers a variety of text scanning and translation tools but also has a QR scanner. Download and install the app (if it isn’t already a default app on your phone) and when you open it, grant permission to use the camera.

Then, point it at your QR code and the app will reveal the hidden information, be it a website link or whatever. Keep the scanner app in a location you’ll remember as you’ll need to use it whenever you want to scan a QR code.

How to scan qr codes on an android phone

Knowing how to scan a QR code on Android has become a crucial skill over the last 18 months with many restaurants, parking facilities, and other venues adopting the code blocks. Why? Because it’s an easy method to link customers to a website or app without forcing them to type in a long URL.

QR codes got lots of attention over a decade ago when smartphones were first rising to prominence, but until the last couple of years, they had never managed to catch on. If you have memories of frustrating interactions with them a year ago, don’t worry, it’s a much simpler process now regardless of which Android phone you own.

How to scan a QR code on Android with the camera app (Android 9 or later)

Modern Android phones typically let you scan a QR code directly from the built-in camera app. This ability was one of the biggest turning points for QR code adoption as it removed the additional step of having to find and install a separate QR code scanner. If your Android phone is running Android 9 or later then you can follow these instructions to scan a QR code.

  • Open the Camera app.
  • Align your camera with the QR code until it is in focus.
    • On OnePlus phones, tap the Google Lens button to the left of the shutter.
  • Tap on the URL that appears on your screen.

That’s it! The QR code should have whisked you off to the appropriate website or app. If you are having difficulties with the QR code triggering automatically on a Pixel, you can use the dedicated Google Lens mode in the camera as well.

Samsung and some other manufacturers introduced QR code readers before it was part of Android, but if you have a phone running Android 8 or earlier, you may need an app to scan QR codes.

While there are thousands of QR code scanner apps in Google Play, I would recommend sticking to one of the many mobile browsers that offer a QR code scanner because I have greater faith in the security of these apps. A couple of popular options to consider are Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

Ways to Use QR Codes

When you scan a QR code, it might open a link to a website or social media account, display a YouTube video, show a coupon, or contact details.

Advertising is probably the most common use of QR codes. Brands can add a QR code to a billboard or magazine, for example, that sends users to its website or a coupon or landing page. For the user, this takes away the hassle of typing in a long URL, or jotting it down on paper. The advertiser benefits from real-time results in which the user immediately visits their website rather than waiting until they get home, or worse, forgetting about it altogether.

Another use is through a virtual store, in which there’s a large touch screen in a public place, such as a subway station or plaza. Shoppers can scan items with their smartphones and get the items delivered at a chosen time and location. Each piece has a unique QR code and works with a mobile app that stores payment and shipping information.

QR codes are often used to transfer cryptocurrency, including Bitcoin. Some cemeteries around the world have started adding QR codes to tombstones to make it easier for visitors to locate the gravesite.

It’s a good practice to only scan QR codes from companies that you trust because of security concerns. A hacker could link a QR code to a malicious website that looks legit but instead phishes your personal information when you try to log in. Also be sure to check the URL before inputting your credentials, something you should already be doing anyway.

It is possible to view the content of a QR code without using a third-party QR codes scanner. There are ways to scan a QR code even without downloading an app from Google Play Store.

It’s true, installing third-party apps is sometimes beneficial. However, there are also downsides to using them.

So how can you scan a QR code without an app?

Risks of Using Third-Party Apps

Hundreds of free mobile applications are available in Google Play Store. But even if they are continually scanning each app for security flaws doesn’t guarantee that all apps are safe.

Google and Apple do not scan the adverts for possible viruses. As a result, advertising may lead you to potentially hazardous websites or even include malware.

Here are some risks of using free third-party apps:

  • Hidden malware: Because people download free apps straight to their devices, it’s easy for developers to conceal harmful software in them. This software can infiltrate your phone and steal personal information such as bank logins and passwords.
  • Lack of support and documentation: When utilizing free software, the developers do not publish their progress notes. As a result, no one can notice any modifications or crucial information in the source code.
  • Loss of Interest: One of the most serious issues with free software is that the creators may occasionally stop improving or upgrading it.

Also, some free apps that you install on your phone invade too much of your privacy. Fortunately, you can avoid those risks because Android devices have built-in QR code scanners.

Using Built-In QR Code Scanners

Newer versions of Android have a QR codes scanner tool, courtesy of Google Lens. This feature is available starting Android 9.

Just open the default Camera app and tap on the Settings icon to activate Google Lens.

After that, go back to the main interface of the camera app and point it at a QR code for a few seconds until it comes into focus. There’s no need to snap a shot; Google Lens will recognize and interpret the code and show a link, which is generally to a web page.

To open and read the contents of the code, tap the notification on the screen or your notification bar.

QR codes Scanner on Older Android Versions

If your device runs on older versions of Android, you can still scan QR codes without an app.

Scanning QR Codes on Android 8

Using Google Screen Search – With Google Screen Search, users can immediately scan QR Codes without having to download an app. Simply aim your camera at the QR Code, press and hold the Home button, then select ‘What’s on my screen?’ Consumers will be able to access the QR Code URL.

Open the Google app and tap Navigation if your smartphone’s screen search is turned off. Next, enable Screen Search in the settings.

Using Google Lens – Google Lens is an artificial intelligence (AI) interface that detects everything in the camera, including QR codes. It can be found in both the camera app and Google Assistant.

Scan QR Codes with Android 7 and Below

Android 7 and below don’t have b uilt-in QR codes scanner fea tures. So if your device is this old, you can either download and install a third-party app or use the web-based QR code scanners.

What is a Web-Based QR Code Scanner?

A web-based QR code scanner, as the name suggests, is a QR code scanner that you can only access online.

We know that it’s hard to trust some third-party apps. That’s why we developed our own safer tool to scan QR codes.

Unlike apps, our web-based QR code scanner is safer to use. That’s because it only requires permission to access the camera of your device.

Just allow the web-based QR code scanner to access your camera. After that, you can then start scanning the QR code on your other phone.

Moreover, web-based QR code scanners can also work similarly to apps. You can even save it to your home screen.

To do that, open the web-based QR code scanner using your preferred browser. Next, save the page as a bookmark and drag it to your home screen.

Our web-based QR code scanner is free to use along with our QR code generator.

QR codes are black and white squares used to access information and services. You see them everywhere nowadays, in restaurants, subways, stores, and other locations. “QR” stands for Quick Response, and they have become a preferred way to transmit information.

What are QR Codes Used For?

QR codes have all manner of uses. Stores and posters use QR codes to provide augmented reality advertisements. Many restaurants have replaced paper menus with QR codes you download at your table. WGarehouses and supply chains use QR codes to track products, and some countries now allow you to pay for products using QR codes.

How Do You Scan a QR Code?

Scanning a QR is as simple as taking a picture of the black-and-white square with your phone camera and following the instructions that pop up. There are, of course, differences in how to scan a QR code on an Android or iPhone, and some phones require you to download a QR reader app.

If the QR banner and icon don’t appear, check if you have the Scan QR Codes function enabled by opening Settings>Camera and toggling Scan QR Codes on (the toggle bar will turn green). If the QR code still refuses to scan, take a picture of it. Many of them require you to accept long permissions lists that have nothing to do with scanning codes, and almost all free scanning apps are ad-supported. Thankfully, there’s QR Code No Ads. The app’s main feature is right in the name – it’s an ad-free open-source QR code scanner.

How to scan a QR code on your Android

To scan QR codes on most Android smartphones, you’ll need to utilise the built-in camera application.

  • Launch the cameraapplication on your Android smartphone.
  • Reposition your camera so that the QRcode is visible in the frame. As a result of the code’s scannability, you’ll be able to view its URL at the bottom of your browser window. To see the URL, just tap it.

To see whether your camera will identify the QR code, try shutting and re-opening your camera, or repositioning the QR code so that it does not fill up the full screen.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll have to resort to using Google Lens, an app that allows you to search the web by just using your camera. Lens also provides you with more possibilities for using the QR code that you have scanned.

Some Android phones, such as the Pixel 5, include a camera app that has Lens functionality. Simply choose Lens from the Modes menu at the bottom of the screen and try again. Otherwise, you may get it through the Google Play Store.

  • Open the Lensapp on your phone and position your camera so that the QR code appears in the frame.
  • The URL associated with the QR code will show above it. To open the URL in a new tab, just press it. Alternatively, you may hit the magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen to see other alternatives.

If you touch on the magnifying glass, you’ll be presented with three choices:

  • The URL is opened in your web browser when you visit a website.
  • Copy URL transfers the URL to your phone’s clipboard, allowing you to paste it anywhere you choose.
  • Share allows you to transmit a URL to someone by text message, email, or another app without having to copy and paste it.

If neither of these methods work, the QR code itself might be invalid.

Can you scan QR codes on Android?

QR codes are useful, though if you are not familiar with technology, they may appear inconvenient. There are a variety of ways to scan QR codes, including using the camera on a smartphone or using applications. The notion of QR codes has simplified our lives in recent years, especially when it comes to getting information and making digital payments. Because of the vast amount of information available and our inability to handle papers, QR codes come to the aid.

People can scan the QR code with their Android phone camera to access a website or app that may contain information such as their ticket, tracking information (in the event of an online order), contact details, or any other data.

QR codes bring convenience, but they might raise concerns about their use and the possibility of providing apps access to your camera. While security issues remain, the procedure of reading these codes varies amongst Android phones. However, scanning these QR codes is simple, no matter which Android phone you have, from the most modern Samsung to ancient OnePlus devices.

Different Ways to Scan QR Codes on Android

Using the Default Camera App

Most Androids now are equipped with a camera app that allows you to read QR codes straight from the phone. The majority of newly released devices contain this feature.

To use the QR code scanner on the Camera app, simply open it and point the lens at the QR code for a few seconds. Remember, you don’t need to snap a picture; simply position the lens such that the code is in the middle of the frame and easily visible. Check to see that your phone is stable and has an active internet connection. A link will display on the screen if the scanning is successful. Once you click on it, you’ll be sent to the website or information included in the QR code.

Scanning with Google Lens

With the use of an app called Google Lens, Google Assistant can also assist you in scanning QR codes. This app will only work if you have Android 8 or above installed on your phone.

To scan QR codes on Android, simply start Google Assistant and hit the Google Lens icon to activate the function. Hold the Google Lens for a few seconds over the QR code. It will highlight the code and display a link that will take you to the necessary material. You’ll also need an internet connection to use this app.

Installing Third-Party QR Code Scanner Apps

If none of the previous techniques worked for you, or if your phone is running an earlier version of Android, you can turn to third-party applications for help. There are a plethora of third-party programs available for free, including Barcode Scanner, QR Code Reader, and Scanner. All you have to do is search the Google Play Store for “QR code scanner”.

However, keep in mind that free apps often have flaws. Using them can expose you to several risks, such as privacy or security concerns. So make your decision based on a high average rating.

Using an Online QR Code Scanner

Online QR code scanners work like traditional apps. They allow you to scan a QR code with your webcam or the camera of your device using HTML5 WebRTC API.

If you visit an online QR code scanner, it will ask permission to use the camera of your device before you can start scanning QR codes. After that, you can save the website as a bookmark and drag it to your home screen. Doing this allows you to open the online QR code scanner instantly.

We suggest using online QR code scanners rather than the usual mobile apps. They are safer and more convenient for your device as you don’t have to install them.

Sca n QR Codes on Android S creen

You can also scan QR codes on your screen. This is possible through the use of the Google App.

If your phone doesn’t have the Google App, you can use the Google Lens.

Google Lens is a Google object recognition tool that looks for information in an image or camera view. It works with QR codes, bar codes, and any other thing you direct the camera at. When you aim the Camera at a photograph of the United States Capitol, it recognizes the item as the United States Capitol Building.

Google Lens may be found in either the Google app or the Google Photos app. For this procedure, we’ll use Google Lens, which can be accessible in the Google app.

Open the Google app on your iPhone.

  • Tap Google Lens in the search bar next to the microphone. Google Lens is a search engine that allows you to find information.
  • Permission to use the camera should be granted to the Google app. If you’ve never used Google Lens before, you’ll notice this. To utilize Lens, tap Turn on the camera.
  • Find the Photos icon in the top right corner of your screen. The contents of your photo library will be shown.
  • Select the photo with the QR code you want to scan by tapping the All Photos button.
  • The information from the QR code will appear on the screen in a few seconds.

That’s how to scan QR codes on Android devices. You have plenty of options to do this task. However, it’s better to stay safe and use online QR code scanners like the one here on our website.

How to scan qr codes on an android phone

QR codes are everywhere: these little pixelated squares appear on billboards and poster ads, in magazines and on product packaging. Unlocking their contents can share contact info or Wi-Fi passwords, or take you to the website for a film you’ve just seen the poster for. So how do you use them? Here’s how to scan QR codes with an Android phone.

What are QR codes?

QR is an acronym for Quick Response. It’s a smarter version of the ubiquitous barcode, and it was originally developed in Japan for the automotive industry. Machines can read QR codes more quickly than barcodes, and QR codes can also store more data in less space.

If QR codes had stayed inside factories we probably wouldn’t care, but they’re used for all kinds of things now: coffee shop loyalty programs, e-tickets for sports and concerts, ‘find out more’ links on adverts or packaging, and sharing contact information.

For most of us, the main reason to use QR codes is to obtain a web link to find out more information about something or to get a password for a wireless network: scan the code and the information should appear in your web browser or connect you to the network. But how do you scan it? There are a couple of ways.

How to scan QR codes with an Android phone

There are a few different ways to scan QR codes on Android. On Pixel phones you are able to do so without downloading third party apps. The option is built-in directly into the default camera app. All you have to do is switch to Lens mode and point the camera at the QR code you want to scan. On Samsung smartphones, the Bixby Vision app can also be used as a QR code reader.

Google Lens

However, if your phone is neither a Pixel nor a Samsung, you don’t have to worry – if you have Google Assistant you should already have the Lens option too. It can be found via the camera icon when the Assistant is in use. If it’s not there, you can download the Google Lens app directly from the Play Store. It’s one of the best QR readers for Android and has some other cool functions such as identifying plants and animals or giving you information about nearby landmarks with AR overlays.

Of course, third party apps are always an option too and this is the QR scanner app we’d recommend the most:

QR Code Reader

QR Code Reader is one of our favorite apps for scanning QR codes: it’s simple and free, works quickly, and doesn’t blast you with advertising (unlike many rival apps).

It’s also compatible with stacks of Android devices and versions: if you have Android 2.3.3 or later you’re good to go, provided, of course, that your device has a camera. If the code you’re scanning is designed to take you to a website, you’ll also need a data signal or wireless connection.

QR Code Reader How to scan qr codes on an android phoneScanning the code is automatic: just line it up inside the guide lines. / © Scan, Inc.

To scan a QR Code, all you need to do is load the app, start scanning and point your camera at the QR code. Line it up inside the guide arrows and that’s it: QR Code Reader recognises it and provides the appropriate information, carries out the appropriate task or, in the case of phone numbers and other contact information, asks you what action to take. It also records your scan history so you can look back at the codes you’ve been pointing your phone at.

No ads, no money. What’s in it for the developers? They hope you’ll like the app so much that you buy Scan, their US$4.99 ($1.99 at the time of writing due to a limited-time sale) scanner. It has the same basic features as QR Code Reader but adds support for scanning all popular barcode types (UPC, EAN and ISBN) to show you pricing, reviews and anything else relevant to the product(s) you scan (although you’ll need a reasonably good camera for barcode scanning).

Unlike QR Code Reader you can also set a default browser for opening web links; QR Code Reader opens them in its own browser.

Can I make my own QR codes?

Yes! There are stacks and stacks of code-creating Android apps, although going through the reviews it seems like they all have flaws. It’s probably easier to go to the Scan developers’ website where you can create QR codes for social media, Wi-Fi access, contact information and many more kinds of data for free in your web browser.

Are there any risks to scanning QR codes?

Actually, yes. A scam known as ‘attagging’ involves pasting new QR codes over existing ones, for example by pasting a label over the QR code on a poster. The new code could link to malicious software that might then access your camera or your personal data. In Russia, a QR code scam made phones send premium-rate texts at US$6 per text. Such malware is very, very unusual, but it does exist and has done for several years.

Do you use a QR code reader on your Android device? Is it a must-have app that delivers daily, or is it gathering virtual dust in your apps screen? Have you ever been a victim of attagging? Let us know in the comments below.

– QR codes are everywhere – here’s how to scan them into your phone

(Pocket-lint) – QR Codes are small square black and white matrix barcodes that contain certain information, such as a website address, app, password or images.

When scanned with your phone, the QR Code will take you directly to a specific webpage, menu, payment screen, app, or offer specific information unique to the code. QR stands for Quick Response with the idea being that when the code is scanned, the information it provides is instant and what you are looking for.

QR Codes are everywhere. You might find a QR Code on top of a menu, taking you to a payment page or separate wine menu perhaps, or you might find them on a rental scooter or bike, taking you to the app you need to download in order to rent it for example. If you’re wondering about how QR codes work for the UK’s NHS COVID-19 track and trace app, then read more about the NHS app in our dedicated feature.

Here is how to scan a QR code without an app on iPhone and Android devices.

How to scan QR codes on iPhone

All you need to do to scan a QR code with iPhone is launch the camera.

You don’t need a separate QR code reader app. Just open the native camera app on your iPhone and make sure the QR code is inside the camera’s viewfinder and a pop up will appear at the top of your screen, which you’ll need to tap to be redirected to the page, app, or information stored within the code.

It’s also possible to add a QR Code reader to the Control Centre so when you swipe down from the top right if you have a Face ID iPhone, or swipe up from the bottom if you have a Touch ID iPhone, the QR Code reader is quick to access.

To add the QR reader to your Control Centre: Open Settings > Control Centre > Tap on the green “+” next to the Code Scanner. You can then use the three lines on the right to move the Code Scanner higher up on your Control Centre.

When you need to scan a QR Code, open the Code Scanner from the Control Centre and line the QR Code up with the square box. You will then be directed to the information stored within the code.

How to scan QR codes on Android phones

If you have an Android phone, you can either use Google Lens app to scan a QR code rather than download a third party app, or you can use Google Lens through the native camera app on many Android phones.

For Samsung phones, a QR Code reader is built into the camera app like iPhone offers, allowing you to scan a QR code by simply placing it within your camera’s viewfinder, with a pop up appearing with the information detected in the code.

Samsung also has Bixby Vision, which is capable of reading QR Codes, as well as identify other objects, like Google Lens, and you can add a QR Reader to your Quick Settings too if it isn’t already there.

To add a QR Code Reader to your Samsung phone’s Quick Settings: Drop down the quick settings from the top of the screen > Tap the three-dot menu icon > Tap ‘Button Order’ > Drag the ‘Scan QR code’ button into your tiles > ‘Done’. Once it’s there you can just tap it to launch the feature whenever you like.

For Google Pixel phones and some Android One phones, you can launch Google Lens by tapping and holding anywhere in the viewfinder of the native camera app as they have Google Lens built into the camera. You will then be able to use Google Lens to scan the QR Code.

For OnePlus, you can use the native camera app but you’ll need to tap on the Google Lens icon in the corner in order to scan the QR Code.

For Huawei phones, again, you can use the native camera app but you’ll need to first tap on the AI Lens icon in the top left corner, followed by selecting the Code Scanner icon, after which you’ll be able to scan the QR Code and access the information.

QR codes are essentially a very easy way to send or receive information, since they might have the link to a website or app, contact information, ticket details, payment method, or a number of other things, and you can simply scan the QR code with your Android phone to acquire that data and get your work done very smoothly. This guide will help you with the process.

How to scan qr codes on an android phone

Several Android phones allow you to scan QR codes directly from the camera app. In most cases, this will work for you if your phone runs on Android 9 or later. This software was launched back in 2018, so a large majority of recent handsets will be on that version or even later.

  1. Open the camera mobile application and point it at the QR code for a few seconds, but you will not need to actually take a photo.
  2. If your phone is able to scan QR codes from the camera app, a link should be made visible on the display. Tapping on that will take you to the contents of the code, which might range from anything between a website or Google Play Store page.

If you are unable to succeed at first, then try lining the QR code up in the middle of the frame and making sure that it can be seen clearly, and that the phone is held steady. You will also need to have access to either a stable Wifi connection or your own mobile data.

Keep in mind that on some Samsung phones you will also be required to enable something called the Bixby Vision within your camera before trying to make QR code scanning work. To do this, tap on the Bixby Vision icon, which can be found in the top left corner of the camera app. Some phones also need you to enable QR code scanning on their main settings screen, so you might have to do some digging for this.

You can scan QR codes on an Android device using the default camera app or the Google Lens app.

As long as your Android device has a camera, it should be able to scan any QR code.Once you’ve scanned a QR code on your Android, you can open the URL or share it.Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Over the last decade, QR codes have boomed in popularity. You can find them on restaurant windows, at bus stops, in stores, and even in books. They’re a useful way to quickly direct people to specific websites.

And as QR codes become more standard, more devices are designed to scan them. That includes smartphones.

You can scan QR codes on any Android device that has a camera, whether it’s a smartphone or a tablet. And once you’ve scanned the code, you can open or share its URL (the website it points to) freely.

How to scan a QR code on your Android

You can use the basic camera app to scan QR codes on most Android devices.

1. Open your Android device’s camera app.

2. Move your camera so the QR code is in the frame. If the code is easily scannable, you’ll see the code’s URL appear at the bottom of the frame. Tap it to open that URL.

If your camera won’t recognize it, try closing your camera and opening it again, or moving the QR code so it doesn’t take up the entire screen.

If that still doesn’t work, you’ll need to use Google Lens, an app that lets you search the web with your camera. Lens also gives you more options for using the QR code you’ve scanned.

Some Android phones, like the Pixel 5, have Lens built into the camera app. Just tap Modes at the bottom of the screen, then Lens, and try again. Otherwise, download it from the Play Store.

1. Open Lens and move your camera so the QR code is in the frame.

2. The QR code’s URL will appear over it. Tap the URL to open it immediately, or tap the magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen to uncover more options.

3. If you tap the magnifying glass, you’ll be given three options:

Website opens the URL in your web browser.Copy URL copies the URL to your phone’s clipboard, so you can paste it anywhere.Share lets you send the URL to someone in a text message, email, or using another app.

If neither of these methods work, the QR code itself might be invalid.

QR codes are convenient but if you are someone who is not very friendly with technology, it may seem tricky at first. While it being directly from a smartphone’s camera or via apps, there are multiple ways to scan QR codes. In recent years, the concept of QR codes has made our life simpler when it comes to accessing information or in terms of digital payments. With the quantity of information present out there and our ability to not manage documents, QR codes come to the rescue. Individuals can simply scan the QR code with their Android phone camera and it leads them to a website or an app, it might hold your ticket details, tracking details (in case of an online order), contact details, or any other information.

QR codes, indeed are convenient but can lead to a lot of doubts in terms of usage as well as giving apps access to your camera. While the safety concerns still exits, the process of scanning these codes differs depending on the Android phones. But no matter which Android phone you own, from the recently launched Samsung to the older models of OnePlus, it is easy to scan these QR codes.

This is how you can read a QR code on your phone:

Phone’s Camera App
There are many Android phones which allow you to scan QR codes directly from the phone’s camera app. This software was launched back in 2018, so the majority of the recently launched handsets will have that version or later. All you need to do is open the camera and hold the lens at the QR code for a few seconds. Remember, you don’t have to take a photo, just hold the lens so that the code is in the center of the frame and is clearly visible. Make sure your phone is steady and the phone has an active internet connection. If the scanning is successful, a link will appear on the screen. When you click on it, you will be directed to the website or the information which the QR code holds.

Scan with Google Lens
Google Assistant can also help you to scan QR codes using a tool called Google Lens. This tool will be functional only if you have Android 8 or above running on your phone. To activate the Google Lens tool, just launch Google Assistant and tap the Google Lens icon. Hold the Google Lens at the QR code for a few seconds. It will highlight the code and a link will appear, which will direct you to the required content. For using this tool too, you will need an internet connection.

QR code-scanning App

If you did not get any luck with the above-mentioned methods, or if your phone has an older version of Android, you have third-party apps to your rescue. There are plenty of third-party apps like Barcode Scanner, QR Code Reader, and Scanner, there are plenty of options available for free. All you have to do is search for “QR code scanner” on the Google Play Store and endless options will come before you. Make your choice depending on a large number of ratings and a high average rating.

The exact process might vary from app to app, but roughly it will be the same. Once the app is downloaded, open it and give access to camera, and the app get its QR scanning screen displayed. Hold the camera at the QR code and it will, within seconds, scan and provide you with the link to the content.

Here’s how to scan a QR code on Android quickly and easily

How to scan a QR code on Android with a separate app (Android 8 or earlier)

Samsung and some other manufacturers introduced QR code readers before it was part of Android, but if you have a phone running Android 8 or earlier, you may need an app to scan QR codes.

While there are thousands of QR code scanner apps in Google Play, I would recommend sticking to one of the many mobile browsers that offer a QR code scanner because I have greater faith in the security of these apps. A couple of popular options to consider are Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

How to scan a QR code with Mozilla Firefox:

  • Open Mozilla Firefox.
  • Tap in the search bar.
  • Tap the Scan button.
    • The first time you may need to grant Firefox permission to take pictures and record video.
  • Align your camera with the QR code until it is in focus.
  • Click Allow when prompted.

How to scan a QR code with Microsoft Edge:

  • Open Microsoft Edge.
  • Tap on the camera icon in the search bar.
    • The first time you may need to grant Edge permission to take pictures and record video.
  • Select Barcode at the bottom left of the screen.
  • Align your camera with the QR code until it is in focus.

Just swipe that away and move the QR into the camera’s view. Within seconds, it will show you what the QR is—just tap on it to execute.

Once installed, you’ll need to give it permissions and whatnot (assuming you haven’t already done so within Assistant).

The famous QR codes are living a second youth. In the 2020 that we have had to live, the recommendations of the minimum contact make QR codes the solution for many restaurants, and other businesses that have had to suppress the information they previously shared on paper. Some users will have to download a third-party app to be able to read QR, but others, such as Motorola users, it is something that they have integrated as standard.

How to scan qr codes on an android phone

A QR code is nothing more than coded information, which when scanned by our mobile, can send us a web link, a photo, or any type of data that has been previously configured. As we said, many mobiles have to download a third-party app to be able to scan QR, but Motorola terminals have this option natively, so we will avoid the need to download a third-party app, which is usually plagued by advertising.

Native QR scan

This is because Motorola offers a practically clean layer, in addition to having in its catalog some devices that are part of the Android One program: This means that we can have elements such as Google Lens as standard, which activate many of the AI functions developed by Google.

Activate from the camera app

To be able to proceed to scan a QR code with our Motorola , we will have to open the camera application. Later, we will have to click on the small icon of “Google Lens”, since it will not work if we point with the normal viewfinder to take photos. Once in the scan option, the mobile will automatically detect the content of the code.

Available options

Then we will have several options, represented by different icon links. The first and represented with the link icon , will take us to the web page that contains the QR code . We have an example on the restaurant web pages, which lead us directly to the menu section. You can also go directly to a download link, to directly download the files in PDF or another format.

We also have an icon in the form of a “magnifying glass” that will allow us to search the content of the link on the Internet. On many occasions, it can be useful to answer questions about a website before entering, or to make sure that the QR will take us where it promises. Finally we have the “copy” icon, which allows you to copy the information to the clipboard to paste it into an email, message or elsewhere.

Scanning a QR code is very simple – you do not need a separate app, you do it through your phone’s camera

QR codes have been around since the mid-90s, but there is a chance you have never needed to scan one until recently.

You can use them to do things like download apps or look up information, but often a quick search tends to be quicker and easier.

As with many things in life, however, the coronavirus pandemic has changed all this.

Now, you need to scan a QR code to be allowed into a pub, restaurant and other public spaces.

But how do they actually work? Here is everything you need to know…

How to scan a QR code on iPhone and Android phones

Scanning a QR code is very simple – you do not need a separate app, you do it through your phone’s camera. It is the same whether you have an iPhone or Android phones such as the Google Pixel, Samsung or Huawei.

Open your camera, point it at the QR code and hold it steady for a few seconds. Your phone will read the code and then a notification will appear, which will take you to a webpage where you can enter your details.

If it does not work you may need to go to your settings and enable QR code scanning.

Why are QR codes being used?

The QR codes are being used for contact tracing, which allows businesses to keep track of everyone who has been through their doors.

If someone contracts coronavirus, they can then tell any establishment they have been into recently, and that establishment can contact others who were there around the same time.

These people can then take Covid-19 tests, and should self-isolate until they receive their results.

QR codes will become even more important when the NHS Test and Trace app is rolled out to the general public, as the app will be able to automatically alert anyone who has been near someone who gets the virus, for example in a restaurant.
