How to send text messages from your chromebook

Android/Chrome: No one likes texting on small, autocorrect-prone phone keyboards. Texty connects your phone to Google Chrome, letting you send and receive SMS messages right from the extension bar.

Generally, if you want to send text messages from your computer, the best way to do so is by signing up for Google Voice. But if you don’t want to change your number or you live outside the US, you don’t have that option. Texty saves you from your tiny phone keyboard by sending SMS messages from Chrome. What’s awesome is that it does it through your actual handset, so the texts come right from your actual number and you can access them on your phone later.

To set up Texty, first download the app on your phone and sign in to it with your Google account. When it says it’s connected, you can then download the Chrome extension, which will immediately link up with your phone and let you send text messages directly from your browser. You can also link Texty to your Google Contacts database, which lets you type in your contacts’ names instead of their phone numbers. When you get a reply, Texty will give you a notification, so you never miss a message.

Texty is in private beta right now, but we’ve got 2,000 codes to give out to Lifehacker readers that want to give it a try. To sign up, hit the link below and type in the code lifehacker-texty when you sign up. Note that you won’t get into the beta immediately; but it shouldn’t take very long at all to get the email that your account is up and running.

Update: The beta invites are all gone. You can still sign up without an invite code on the signup page, but it will take you a bit longer to get your invitation.

INVITE CODE: LIFEHACKER-TEXTY
Please enter this code on the site and do not email it to us as emailing it will do nothing.

As it’s still in beta, there are a few quirks, but the Texty team was quick to respond to any and all issues I had, so shoot them a support request if you have any issues.

Texty is a free download for Android devices running 2.2 and up, as well as Google Chrome on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Update: Texty is now known as MightyText .

How to send text messages from your chromebook

Google’s “Messages on the Web” feature allows you to send and receive texts right from your PC, Chromebook, or Mac without digging out your phone.

Google’s Messages App for Android now allows you to manage your text messages on your computer. So, if you’re a texting addict, this should make things much easier for you. The best part is that it’s web-based so you can use it on any device with a web browser. Here is a look at getting it set up and what you can expect.

Messages, from Google

If you’re an Android smartphone user, your phone’s manufacturer will probably have its own text messaging app preinstalled on your device. However, Google offers a free alternative called Messages. This is a nice uncluttered option, which is the default on the company’s Pixel devices. It can be downloaded for free here, in the Google Play Store.

While the app is nice, not many people know that it also offers the option of sending and receiving messages from your computer, in a browser, much like WhatsApp does.

Getting access to the feature couldn’t be easier. Once you start using the Messenger app, you’ll get a notification asking you if you want to use it, just tap the “Try Now” button. If you missed it, you can access it by tapping the Options menu (three dots) menu which provides a “Messages for web” option.

Once selected, you will be asked to go to messages.android.com on your computer and tap the “QR scanner” on your phone’s screen.

The website will show a QR code that you will be able to scan and you’re set. You will have your whole list of messages and contacts on your computer’s screen, with all the features of the mobile app available (and the same simplicity).

Another nice feature is you can enable Dark Mode, the same way you can in the mobile app. You can find that in the Options menu, near your list of message threads. You can even choose to use the feature when you’re on mobile data. Also, if you want the computer pairing to be enabled, so you don’t need to do it again. If you’re using this on your own computer, I see no reason why you wouldn’t enable it.

Remember, this will allow you to send and receive texts via your browser, so you can use it on Windows, Chromebook, or Mac. However, Windows 10 1809 and higher allows more functionality using the Your Phone app — including the ability to sync photos. For more on that, make sure to check out our article on how to send texts and sync photos with the Your Phone app on Windows 10.

Messages are sent as plain text, without any indication of which participant said what. Images and videos can also be forwarded in this way.

To find the text message you emailed, look for an email in this format:

However, the part after @ might not read exactly as your provider. For example, if your phone number is 555-555-0123 and you use Verizon, the email is sent from this address:

See this email/SMS address formatting table for details on how emailed texts appear to recipients.

Not all Android devices have this feature. On some devices, you can select multiple messages at the same time, while on others you can’t.

The SMS application also varies from provider to provider. The Google Play store has several third-party messaging apps including Handcent and ChompSMS that make forwarding texts easy.

Other apps automatically forward texts to a pre-established email address. If you want to ensure your messages are saved so you can refer to them later, look into one of these apps. One example is Auto Forward SMS 404, which forwards texts from your phone to an email account, forwards texts with specific keywords, sends a notification when the battery is low, and notifies you of missed calls.

How to send text messages from your chromebook

Text messaging has become one of the most popular ways to carry on conversations in our world today. The convenience of using SMS is universally known. Sometimes, though, for one reason or another, you may prefer to have access to text messaging on your computer.

No matter your reason, if this is something you want to do, follow one of these texting methods that do not require the use of the messaging app on your phone.

1. Google Voice

Google Voice isn’t talked about much, but this handy service gives you a free virtual phone number that you can use to make calls and send texts. Currently, it’s only available in the US and Canada. If you find yourself in these territories, then setting it up is simple.

How to send text messages from your chromebook

1. Go to Google Voice and sign up.

2. Click the Messages icon, then “Send a message.”

3. Enter the name or number of the contact you want to text. (You can add up to seven people in a group text.) You can also attach images by clicking the image icon.

4. When you’re ready, click the “Send” arrow.

2. Your Email Account

This only works for USA and Canadian phone numbers. An often unknown way for you to text without your phone is for you to use your regular email client. To use your email to send a message:

1. Click to compose a new email like you normally would.

2. Insert the person’s ten-digit phone number.

3. Add your recipient’s carrier code from the chart below.

If you are not sure which carrier your recipient has, you can look it up.

These sites will check to make sure it is a wireless number and give you the SMS and MMS addresses for that contact.

3. Windows App

If you have a Windows machine, you can use the “Your Phone Companion” app to send and receive texts. The drawback to using this program is that you cannot send or receive photos or other media.

To use the Your Phone Companion App to text:

1. Press the Win button on your keyboard and click on “Your Phone “on the app list.

2. If you have not connected your phone yet, the app will walk you through that.

3. Once they are connected, you have access to all your text messages and can create and receive messages from there.

How to send text messages from your chromebook

You can also access pictures you’ve taken with your phone. You can’t send them, but you can see them.

4. Chrome Extension

How to send text messages from your chromebook

If you are a Gmail user, you can use a Chrome extension called “Send Your Email to SMS (text)” to send text from your email. It’s a nice little app that allows you to send ten messages for free each month. If you do more than that, you need to upgrade to an unlimited plan for about $55 a month. For a small business, this could be a way to send messages to your customers.

1. Go to the Chrome Web Store and download the extension.

2. Open Gmail in your browser. You will see that the extension adds a phone icon to your email window.

3. Click on Compose to begin a message.

4. Click on the phone icon near the bottom-left corner.

5. Type the number you want to text.

6. Type your message and send it out.

With this extension, you don’t have to locate and type in the carrier code. It will automatically do it for you.

5. Free Websites

You have a choice of some free websites that you can use to send messages. Here are a few examples of the many that are available.

GlobFone

How to send text messages from your chromebook

GlobFone only has an SMS option – you cannot send pictures. To use it, all you need to do is put in the number you want to text and add a message. The recipient cannot reply, but the site has a status check to make sure the message was delivered correctly.

TxtDrop

If you want to use email but don’t want to go through the hassle of finding the carrier code or typing it in yourself, you can try TxtDrop. To use it, put in your email address and the phone number of the recipient and send the text. All you need is the country code and number. The site gets the carrier code for you.

The recipient can reply to you. It comes to your email, and you can continue a conversation that started that way. It’s very cluttered, though, and isn’t easy for the recipient to read on a phone.

6. Text Sync Apps

Another way of texting from your computer is to install one of several different apps that sync your text messages onto your laptop.

Pushbullet

How to send text messages from your chromebook

Pushbullet is one of the most popular desktop apps to connect your Android phone to your computer. It not only pushes SMS messages between the devices, but it includes Notification Mirroring, pushing all your notifications from your Android to your computer. Pushbullet used to be free, but they reduced the number of features on their free platform and added a paid level of $5.00 a month.

AirDroid

How to send text messages from your chromebook

AirDroid is nearly the same as Pushbullet. You can also view your camera and dial your phone remotely. All these features are only $2.00 per month.

MightyText

This app for sending SMS messages from your PC is a browser option, not a desktop app like Pushbullet and AirDroid. MightyText lets you synchronize your SMS messages along with your notifications, photos, videos, and all the major desktop browsers. It’s free for up to 500 messages a month, and after that it will set you back $5.00 monthly.

If you find that texting on your phone is not the most efficient way for you to create messages, try one of these other ways to send them. And don’t forget to backup your messages in the event that your phone crashes.

How to send text messages from your chromebook

If you’ve wanted to send a text to someone from your computer instead of digging out your phone, you’re in luck. Google recently announced the rollout of its Messages for the Web feature for the Android Messages app. It’s a browser-based service that allows you to send and receive both SMS and RCS (Rich Communication Services) messages from your PC, Mac, Chromebook, and other devices with a web browser. Here’s a look at how to set it up and what you can expect from Google’s new messaging feature.

Android Messages for the Web

Launch the Messages app on your phone and tap the options button in the upper-right corner of the screen and then choose “Messages for the web” from the menu. That will bring up another screen with a scanning button. Since this new feature just started rolling out last week, it might not be an option on your phone yet, but you should see it soon.

How to send text messages from your chromebook

Next, head to messages.android.com on your PC and scan the displayed QR Code with the Messages app on your phone. If you don’t want to go through the linking process every time, toggle on the “Remember this computer” switch before scanning the code.

How to send text messages from your chromebook

That’s all there is to it. Now you will be able to start texting away from your browser. The experience is clean, intuitive, and simple to use. There is a list of conversation on the left and currently selected chat on the right. You can send texts, images, stickers, and the most important – emojis. You can see all of your past messages and start creating new ones and will be able to receive desktop notifications on the web. All the major browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Microsoft Edge are supported.

How to send text messages from your chromebook

A few other things to point out here. It syncs your messages fast between your phone and the web. If you delete or create a message on one source it shows up on the other in near real-time. There is also Dark Mode (shown above) that you can turn on via Settings. And if you forget to log out of the Messages app on a computer, you can log out remotely from your phone.

While you can share certain files with a simple drag and drop, right now, PDF and Microsoft Office docs are not supported. Still, this is a great start for cross-platform Android messaging. It has been a top requested feature for years, and is off to a solid start and should only improve moving forward.

Microsoft’s Your Phone app allows you to sync text messages, phone calls, notifications, and more through your PC. Syncing text messages lets you keep your smartphone in your pocket and use your PC’s keyboard to send text messages. To make this work, you’ll need an Android phone. If you’re running certain Samsung Galaxy phones, you can also sync RCS messages. All other Android phones can sync, send, and receive standard SMS messages.
