Please try logging into https://account.microsoft.com/family/ using your Xbox account.

This page should show whether your account is part of a family or not. If it is, you should have an option to leave the family group.

If you don’t then I think you will have to contact support at https://support.xbox.com/

Microsoft Family Groups allows you to limit access to specific apps and games for individual accounts on your Xbox One. You can quickly set up a child account or additional restrictions to protect innocent eyes from explicit content.

To restrict access to specific apps and games on Xbox One, you’ll first need to create a Microsoft Family Group. After you do this, you’ll be able to create a child account.

You’ll then need to sign in to this account on your Xbox One. To get started, turn on your Xbox and press the Xbox button in the middle of your controller to open the guide. Navigate to your avatar in the top left to access the “Sign In” screen, and then select “Add New.”

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

Sign in to the child account and choose whether you want to continue the setup through the Microsoft Family Group in a browser or on Xbox One. If you choose the former, type your email address. You’ll receive an email that will direct you to the main hub of your Microsoft Family Group. There, you can also set broader content restrictions for the child account.

If you choose to continue on Xbox One, you’ll be prompted to sign in to your Microsoft account. Whichever device you choose, the results will be the same.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

Next, choose whether you want your child to be able to log in to third-party apps. To view the Microsoft Services Agreement, Microsoft Privacy Statement, or additional information about third-party apps, select the appropriate option on the right.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

Proceed through the prompts to confirm your consent, and then type a gamertag for the child account.

Next, you select one of the three levels of security that will dictate how the child account signs in to Xbox One and accesses its content and settings. You can choose “No Barriers,” “Ask for My Passkey,” or “Lock It Down.”

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

Because you used the child account you created in Microsoft Family Group to create the child profile on Xbox One, you can navigate to your Microsoft Family Group in any browser to set specific limits on apps and games.

Once there, select the account you want to regulate, and then click “App and Game Limits.” This is also where you can view, approve, or deny any outstanding requests for access to restricted apps and games.

If you want to enable time limits for specific games, just make sure the “Time Limits” option is toggled-On.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

Even if this is enabled, games still have no time limit at first. You have to toggle-On this option to the right of each game to activate the default time limit of one hour.

You can also alter this schedule for weekdays and weekends individually by clicking any game or app to expand its menu. Use the slider to select how long this account can use each app. Use the “Allow From” and “To” drop-down menus to create a time window within which each app will be accessible.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

To block an account from downloading, playing, or accessing an app, just click “Block App.” If you want to see on which device an app is installed, just hover your mouse over any of the icons under “Installed On.”

These controls can help you weed out specific games or apps you find inappropriate for certain family members. However, do keep in mind that most digitally-savvy kids can, and will, find a work-around for most restrictions their parents create.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

Parental controls allow you to restrict child accounts on an Xbox One. You can restrict access to games, media, and apps by age rating, filter the web, and control online privacy and chat features. This works similarly to the parental controls in Windows 10.

This feature relies on your children each having their own accounts. Unlike on a PlayStation 4, there’s no way to set console-wide parental controls.

How Microsoft Defines Child Accounts and Adult Accounts

Note that Microsoft accounts are always treated as adult accounts if they’re 18 years or older (20 in Japan and South Korea). You won’t be able to manage the account if its user is 18 years old. When a child account turns 18, all of the restrictions are automatically removed, and it gains full access to manage any child accounts in the family.

If you need to update and correct the age on an account, you can head to the Microsoft account website, sign in with that account, and visit Your Info > Edit Your Personal Info. You can change the account’s age from here.

Add One or More Child Accounts to Your Family

You’ll need to add separate accounts for your children to your Xbox One if you haven’t already. Press the Xbox button on the center of your controller to go to the dashboard, then tap left on the joystick or directional pad to open the menu. Scroll down to the gear icon and select “All Settings” with the A button.

Head to Account > Family on the Settings screen.

Select “Add to Family” to add a children’s account to your family.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

You’ll see a list of accounts enabled on your Xbox One. If the child already has an account on the Xbox One, select it. Otherwise, select “Add new.”

The child should sign in with his or her Microsoft account here. If the child doesn’t already have their own Microsoft account, you can select “Get a new account” and create one. You can also just create a Microsoft account online and sign in with it here.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

You’ll see the “Ask Your Parent to sign in” screen if you’re signing in with an underage account. Select “I’m an adult.” You’ll then need to select your parent account and provide its password to finish adding the underage user.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

You’ll then go through the usual account setup screens–privacy policy, sign-in and security preferences, personalization, Kinect setup (if you have a Kinect), and Xbox Live Gold setup. You may want to lock your Xbox profile with a PIN for more security.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

After the account is added, you’ll be asked whether you want to add the account to your family. Select “Add to Family.”

This is the same Family account group that’s shared with Windows 10 PCs. You can manage your Family online, too.

Customize the Parental Controls for Each Child Account

Any accounts you add to your family will appear under Settings > Family. Select an account on this screen to manage it.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

You’ll see several categories of settings here: Privacy & Online Safety, Access to Content, and Web Filtering. You can also choose to remove the user account from your Xbox One or family group from here.

The “Privacy & Online Safety” screen allows you to customize privacy and online settings. You can choose either “Child Defaults,” “Teen Defaults,” or “Adult Defaults.” You can also select “View Details & Customize” to tweak the settings in more detail.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

These settings allow you to control a variety of privacy settings. For example, you can control who can see when the account is online, what it’s watching or listening to, its Xbox profile, the history of games played and apps used, and what videos the account has watched.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

The “Access to Content” screen allows you to control which games, media, and apps an account can play. This uses the game, movie, TV, music, and app age ratings. You can also hide images and demos of mature-rated games on the store, and prevent them from appearing when the user account searches.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

The “Web Filtering” screen allows you to set up web filtering features. You can choose Turned off, Warn on adult, Basic communication, General interest, Designed for children, or Allow list only. These options run the gamut from entirely unfiltered to only allowing specific sites you choose.

How to set content restrictions on xbox one

If your child wants to access restricted content in the future, a “Choose who will give permission” screen will appear. The child can then select your parent account to request access. You’ll need to enter your password, indicating you’ve provided permission for the child to access the normally restricted content.

Xbox consoles have been designed from the ground-up to be perfect for players of all ages, but that means for every fantastic kid’s game like Minecraft Dungeons there’s an adult-oriented game like Cyberpunk 2077. We already have a comprehensive parents guide to everything Xbox, but now Microsoft has its new Xbox Family Settings app that gives parents more control than ever before.

For those just getting acquainted with the Xbox Family Settings app, we have guides on setting up the app for you and your child, and how to use the app to set time limits. In this Xbox Family Settings parents guide, we’ll be going over how to set content age restrictions, or how to keep your loved ones from playing mature games.

How do I control what content my child can access with Xbox Family Settings?

How to set content restrictions on xbox oneHow to set content restrictions on xbox one How to set content restrictions on xbox oneSource: Windows Central

Getting started with content age restrictions in the Xbox Family Settings app is easy, once you have everything set up properly. It’s up to the parent or trusted adult to decide what kind of content you want your child to have access to, but the Xbox Family Settings app makes it easy by allowing you to choose a suitable age, rather than deciphering content ratings that may not be immediately obvious. If your child has their age listed in their Microsoft Account, Xbox Family Settings will default to their age (or the closest to it) when you initially set up Xbox Family Settings as well, to make it even easier.

To control content age restrictions yourself, just follow these steps:

  1. Open the Xbox Family Settings app on your mobile device. If you haven’t installed it yet, we offer a guide on installing and setting up the Xbox Family Settings app that tells you everything you need to know.
  2. On the Family dashboard, choose the Family member you want to edit from one of your family members.
    • The Family dashboard in the Xbox Family Settings app lists all the people in your family, including organizers and members.
    • Organizers are down at the bottom in small text, as organizers can’t edit the settings for other organizers. Organizers are parents and other trusted adults.
    • Members get large banners under the “Your Family” header near the top of the screen, with snippets of important information listed underneath. Members are children and other players.
  3. Once you know which member you want to edit, tap on the member. This will bring you to that member’s dashboard.

Tap on the Content Restrictions section on the member’s dashboard.

  • The Content Restrictions section looks complicated, as Xbox Family Settings does its best to explain it all to you, but there’s really only one section here.
  • The “Content Restrictions” banner inside the Content Restrictions section is located at the very top, and this is where you choose what age-appropriate content this member has access to.
  • Below that are dedicated sections for kid-friendly games with special integration into Xbox Family Settings, which right now includes Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons. We’ll go over those sections in more detail in other guides.

How to set content restrictions on xbox oneHow to set content restrictions on xbox one How to set content restrictions on xbox oneSource: Windows Central

  • Focusing on the Content Restrictions banner at the top, you’ll notice this section has an “Apply age filters” section which explains that this sets the age limit for content for this member on Xbox consoles and Windows 10 devices under this account. The member will need special permission to access more mature content.
  • Below this is “Allow Content Suitable for Age. ” which will list the current age level of this member. Tap on this to edit what age-appropriate content this member can access.
  • Once you tap on “Allow Content Suitable for Age. ” a menu will appear giving you a scrolling list of ages starting at Age 3, going up to Age 17, and finally Unrestricted if this member can access any content. Select the age you want and then hit “Save” when you’re ready. You can also hit “Cancel” to back out without making changes.
  • Below this there is an “Always allowed” drop-down menu that lists any games or content that are excluded from this member’s age limits. This will list games that are allowed by their special sections below it.
  • Once you’ve configured this member’s settings to be exactly the way you want them, simply hit the back arrow to return to the member’s dashboard, and all of your settings will be remembered. You can return here to edit these settings whenever you want.
  • The content age restrictions in the Xbox Family Settings app controls what kind of games and content children are able to access, going off of standardized ratings that everything on Xbox consoles is required to undergo. This means that even if games are installed on an Xbox console that are beyond your child’s age limit, they will not be able to access it under their account. Keep in mind that this only pertains to Xbox consoles and certain Windows 10 programs and games, but will not extend to devices like their mobile. For this, you’ll want to use the Microsoft Family Safety app, which is more generalized.

Finally, if you’re wanting to find something awesome for your child to play on Xbox, make sure to check out some of the best Xbox games for kids, such as Minecraft, which has special integration into the Xbox Family Settings app.
