How to snooze or reply to notifcations from the iphone’s lock screen

When you receive a notification on the iPhone–say, for a text message–you don’t have to unlock your phone to respond to it. You can actually respond to all sorts of notifications from the lock screen, no unlocking needed.

Not only can you respond to text messages, but you can also respond to reminders, events, Facebook messages, and more. Basically, if it pops up on your lock screen, you can probably deal with it from there.

In a lot of cases, such as with Slack notifications, when you swipe left, you will only have the option to remove the notification.

In many instances however, you’ll have more options. Here we’ve received a text message.

If we swipe left, we have the option to reply with one tap, and we don’t need to open iMessage. We can also dismiss the message, which means it will remain unread in iMessage.

If we reply, then the keyboard will pop up and we can tap out a quick message to the sender without unlocking the phone first.

You can also use these swiping skills on reminders. Here, we’re given options to dismiss the reminder (which doesn’t make it go away), mark it as complete, or snooze it.

If you use Facebook Messenger, you have several options as well, aside from the usual dismiss and reply, you can also “Mute” talkative friends. Keep in mind however, it will stay muted until you go back in to Messenger and unmute it.

How to snooze or reply to notifcations from the iphone’s lock screenNote, you will have to enter your passcode or use Touch ID to reply to a Facebook message.

You can also interact directly with calendar notifications. The only options available are to dismiss it or snooze it. Nevertheless, if you do have an event that you want to be reminded of at a later time, snooze is definitely a useful option.

The point is: for every app that posts a notification on the lock screen, there are probably options to interact with it. Often, you may only be able to dismiss it, but as you’ve seen from the examples in this article, there are often other options available–and you don’t have to usually unlock your phone and start the app to tap out a quick reply or snooze a reminder. Next time you get a notification, give it a swipe and see what you can do.

With interactive notifications for iPhone and iPad, you no longer have to stop what you’re doing in order to respond to a message, trash a junk email, or accept a calendar invite. Simply act on that notification at the top of your screen, or from your Lock screen, and then continue what you were doing!

How to use interactive notifications on iPhone and iPad

You’re gaming. You’re on Facebook. You’re surfing the web or checking out Reddit. And then, boom, a notification comes in. Rather than switching out to another app and ruining your flow, interactive notifications allow you to simply swipe, take action, and go right back to what you were doing!

When a notification banner appears:

Swipe down on the notification banner with the pull bar when a notification comes in.

Tap on any button that contains an action you want to perform. The available buttons and actions will vary depending on what app you receive a notification from.

  • Eg. tap on a text message to begin typing your reply
  • Eg. tap on dismiss or snooze to clear a calendar notification.

That’s it! Once you’ve taken care of the notification to your liking, go back to whatever it was you were doing.

How to use interactive notifications from the Lock screen on iPhone and iPad

You’re watching TV, working on your computer, reading a book — yes, people still do that! — and all of a sudden an alert appears on your iPhone or iPad. With interactive notifications, you can often take action immediately without having to unlock your device!

From the lock screen:

Swipe left over the notification to reveal available options.

Tap on the available options, depending on what type of notification it is.

  • Reply: This opens up a text field where you can type your response,
  • Various response buttons: This depends on the type of notification and the application it comes from. For example, it might be a snooze button to delay a reminder for later.

Delete: Deletes the notification.

The type of notification you receive will determine what kind of action options you have. And since Apple is allowing developers to take advantage of actionable notifications, the amount of options are endless.

Quickly reply to text and WhatsApp messages without unlocking the iPhone.

iOS 15 final release is out to the public and people are gradually updating to the latest version of iOS. The update brings in a host of new features and changes the way how some existing functions work on an iPhone. For instance, the steps to apply effects to Live Photos and turn Do Not Disturb on or off are now entirely different.

Perhaps, the ability to quickly reply from Notification Center and Lock Screen seems to be missing in iOS 15. A lot of users are hence miffed as they can’t reply to a text without unlocking their iPhone. Talking of Quick Reply, it is a convenient feature that lets users reply to texts and chat messages directly from their lock screen.

How to snooze or reply to notifcations from the iphone’s lock screen

So how do I reply to lock screen notifications on iOS 15? Thankfully, it is still possible to quickly reply to notifications from Lock Screen or Notification Center on iPhone. It is just that iOS 15 changes the way how you respond to text messages without opening the app. In iOS 15, swiping left over a notification now shows quick actions as ‘Options’ and ‘Clear’ instead of ‘View’ and ‘Clear’.

  4. Tap empty space outside of the message preview to get back to the lock screen.

In the same way, you can reply to WhatsApp messages on the lock screen.

NOTE: In case you can’t reply to a message from the Lock Screen, follow the steps below.

  • On iPhone X or later – Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Under the ‘Allow access when locked’ section, toggle on the “Reply with Message” option.
  • On iPhone 8 or earlier – Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked. Then turn on Reply with Message.

How to reply to messages from Notification Center

It is easier to respond to a message you got recently directly from the Notification Center. To do so,

  1. While your iPhone is unlocked, swipe down from the top-left of your screen to open the Notification Center.
  2. Find the text or message you want to quickly respond to.
  3. Long-press the message to preview it. How to snooze or reply to notifcations from the iphone’s lock screen

In a similar way, you can reply to WhatsApp messages from the notification bar on your iPhone.

Notification banners and alerts aren’t new to iOS, but the ability to expand and interact with them is. Apple’s new iOS 8 has ushered in some small, yet convenient features to the banner and alert notifications that make them truly interactive. The new additions, as you will see, makes it easy to complete simple tasks without leaving the current screen you’re in.

In order for this new feature to work, you will need banner or alert notifications enabled, which need to be enabled for each app individually in the Notifications section of your Settings menu.

Reply to Text Messages from Banners and Alerts

There is no need to exit the screen you’re in just to send your friend a quick response through text. Pull down the notification and send a reply, or even an audio message. Once sent, you can continue your activity.

Snooze a Reminder or Mark as Completed

I use the Reminders application a lot (especially for location-based alerts), so the ability to snooze a reminder or mark it as complete is extremely convenient.

Interactive Alerts

As mentioned, these notifications are also interactive alerts. As soon as the notification comes through, dismiss or take action, then continue doing your thing.

Again, alert styles can be changed in your Settings app under the Notifications preferences.

Accept or Decline Calendar Invites

Unfortunately, I was unable to get the Calendar app banner notifications to work on two different iOS 8 devices, so this might be a bug that needs to be reported. But, you are supposed to get a notification like the one below whenever you’re added to a meeting or event.

Plus, Third-Party Apps Can Work Soon

As soon as third-party apps begin updating to include new iOS 8 features, you will be able to perform similar functions from banners, like commenting or liking a Facebook post.

I mange tilfælde, f.eks.

We have a messaging app that aims to display notifications when it receives messages when phone is locked from remote user, and let local user enter text from lock screen, and send the message. How do I implement this? Is UNUserNotificationCenter in iOS 10 the way to go?

1 Answer 1

There is lack of well-structured info in internet, although it’s very good feature, implemented in serious messenger apps.

You should start with UNNotificationContentExtension to show custom UI for received Push Notification. Take any available example on internet and implement it like you want. Pay attention on bundle ID – it should be com.yourapp.yourextension . When done, you’ll have the main app and the extension widget in Xcode.

In the main app set up registration for Push Notifications in iOS10 manner:

All magic happens in UNTextInputNotificationAction custom action that you add to your Push Notifications handler.

To complete setting up Push Notifications add this param in your extension Info.plist : NSExtension -> NSExtensionAttributes -> UNNotificationExtensionCategory: "QuickReply"

It’s all about setting up. To try it, use Pusher tool and configure Push Notification in this manner:

At least you have to catch the notification in your widget. It happens in func didReceive(_ notification: UNNotification) in your widget class:

And if user responds to received Push Notification, your widget will trigger the following callback:

Under iOS 10, we can now reply to messages without unlocking our devices, which is kind of awesome and convenient. If you check out my screenshot below, you’ll note that the text I’ve gotten says “Press for more”…

(If you don’t have 3D Touch, you’ll instead be told to slide, and there’ll be the option to view the message and reply to it.)

Anyway, this is cool and nifty and all, but what if you don’t want just anybody to be able to reply to your texts if he or she happens to grab your iPhone? Well, it’s easy to turn this feature off, luckily. The option is under Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked , and it’s labeled “Reply with Message.”

If you toggle that off, pressing on an incoming message will do you no good. And if you’re keen to turn off those notifications on your lock screen entirely, then hey, you should know that you can do that too under Settings > Notifications > Messages > Show on Lock Screen . That’s not a new feature, but maybe you’ve decided you’re more paranoid under iOS 10. I’m here to help, not necessarily to understand.
