Some Office 365 subscriptions automatically install Microsoft Teams along with the rest of Microsoft Office. Teams will automatically open at boot after it’s installed, but you can stop this by disabling the Team startup program.
Whether you use Teams or not, you can now disable the startup program easily—without actually signing into a Team. Locate the purple Microsoft Teams icon in your notification area or system tray. Right-click it and select Settings > Do Not Auto-Start Teams. You can then right-click the icon again and select “Quit.” You shouldn’t see Teams again until you choose to launch it yourself.
If you don’t see the icon, you may need to click the up arrow to the left of the icons on your taskbar to view additional icons. The icon will appear here as long as Microsoft Teams is running.
On Windows 10, you can also head to Settings > Apps > Startup. To quickly find this screen, open your Start menu, type “Startup” into its search box, and click the “Startup Apps” shortcut that appears.
Locate “Microsoft Teams” in the list of apps on the Startup pane. Click the switch to the right of it to turn it “Off.”
Windows also has startup program options in its Task Manager. It works the same way, and you can use either. Launch the Task Manager, click the “Startup” tab, locate “Microsoft Teams” in the list, and click “Disable.”
To open the Task Manager, right-click the Windows taskbar and select “Task Manager.” You can also press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
You can also uninstall the Teams software if you don’t want to use it. You’ll have to uninstall two things to completely uninstall Microsoft Teams: both Microsoft Teams itself and the Teams Machine-Wide Installer.
While this will work, updates to your organization’s Office 365 software may cause Windows to reinstall Teams. Rather than fighting to keep Teams off your PC, you can just disable the Microsoft Teams startup program and forget about it.

Once MS Teams Program gets installed on the computer, it tends to automatically launch itself as soon as you boot the computer and remains active in the background, waiting to be used.

Microsoft Teams is an application that is used by several businesses for the sake of communication. It provides a high-quality video conferencing, along with other features like file storage and application integration. Applications like Microsoft Teams have recently gotten popularity due to the ongoing pandemic as people start working and studying from home. Microsoft Teams became a part of Office 365 in late 2019. While the application has its own features that are widely used, one of the features that are found annoying by some users is the fact that it starts automatically when your Windows machine boots up.
Now, this can be useful to some users, while others may not be fond of it even if they use it. Nonetheless, you can disable this so that Microsoft Teams does not open up when the operating system boots up. There are various ways you can do this. You can do it through the settings of the Teams application icon on the taskbar. In addition, the same result can be achieved from the Task Manager or the Windows startup settings window. We will be going through all of these options so you can choose whatever you find easy and quick.
There are some cases where you are not able to prevent it from launching on startup. This is because there is a registry key made for Microsoft Teams by the developers that control this feature. Therefore, in order to overcome that, you will have to delete that specific key in the Windows Registry window. With that said, let us start with the different methods that are available to you.
Method 1: From the System Tray
The first and easiest way that you can actually stop Microsoft Teams from launching at startup is via the Microsoft Teams icon on the system tray. When the application launches, an icon of the application appears on the taskbar. This can be seen if you have the application running right now. Thus, you can go through the settings option that pops up when you right-click on the icon and disable the option that starts it on boot up. Follow the step-by-step instructions down below to do this:
- On your system tray, locate the Microsoft Teams icon.
- Then, right-click on the icon and a menu appears.
- On the popped-up menu, go to Settings and then choose the Do not auto-start Teams option. Disabling MS Teams Auto-start
- That will prevent it from launching at startup.
Method 2: From the Task Manager
Another way that you can stop the Teams application from launching at startup is from the Task Manager. The Task Manager has a startup tab that lets you see what applications will launch during startup. You can disable any applications that you want as well as change the impact of that application on startup. Follow the instructions down below to disable Microsoft Teams on startup:
- First of all, right-click on your taskbar and then choose Task Manager from the pop-up menu. Alternatively, you can just press the shortcut keys i.e. Ctrl + Shift + Esc. That will bring up Task Manager as well. Launching Task Manager
- Once the Task Manager window has launched, switch to the Startup tab.
- There, you will be able to see all the applications that launch on startup. Task Manager Startup
- Find Microsoft Teams and select it.
- Then, at the bottom, click the Disable button.
Method 3: From Windows Settings
As it turns out, you can also change the startup applications through the Windows Settings window. This is rather simple to do and it requires just a few clicks. Windows Settings has a separate option for Apps that lets you manage the different applications on your machine. To change the startup apps, follow the instructions down below:
- First of all, open up the Start Menu and then click on the settings icon on the left to launch the Settings window. You can also just press the Windows key + I to open up the Settings window. Windows Settings
- Then, click on the Apps option.
- On the Apps screen, go to the Startup tab on the left-hand side. Startup Apps
- There, locate Microsoft Teams and just click the switch to turn it off.
Method 4: Deleting Registry Key
In some cases, you cannot disable the Microsoft Teams using the normal steps that you would take to prevent any other application from starting up at startup. This is because Microsoft Teams has a registry key that controls the startup behavior of the application. Therefore, in order to disable the startup feature of the application, you will have to delete the registry key inside the Windows Registry. Please make sure that you do this if the above methods do not achieve the desired result for you. This is because messing with the Windows Registry is not really recommended if you do not know what you are doing. If you are going to proceed, please make sure you follow each and every step carefully. With that said, let us begin:
- First of all, open up the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows key + R.
- Then, in the Run dialog box, type regedit and press the Enter key.
- This will open up the Windows Registry window. Windows Registry
- Now, you have to navigate to the following path:
- There, on the right-hand side, delete the com.squirrel.Teams.Teams entry. Disabling Teams on Startup from Registry
- To do this, simply right-click on the key and choose the Delete option.
- After that, close the Windows Registry window and reboot your machine.
- Microsoft Teams should not start during boot up now.
After installing Microsoft Teams, Teams is set by default to automatically start when logging into Windows 10. Many people (including me) appreciate this because Teams is part of the daily work in the office. However, if you have installed Microsoft Teams to be able to do temporarily video conferencing in these times of Corona and working from home, the automatic start-up of Teams can be a nuisance. In that case, this blog article is for you. I describe all possible ways to stop Microsoft Teams from automatically starting when logging into your Windows 10 device.
Disable auto-start application from the Settings window
The easiest and most common way to disable the auto-start of Teams is as follows:
- Open the main Teams Window
- In Teams, left-click your profile photo and choose Settings
- In the Settings window, untick Auto-start application
- Close the Settings window
That’s all. No need to click Save or OK. Settings are changed directly after unticking the Auto-start application option.
Delete the registry key name and value
- Click Start , type Registry and click Registry Editor (app)
- Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Run
- In Run, locate com.squirrel.Teams.Teams on the right side
- Right-click com.squirrel.Teams.Teams and click Delete
- If prompted to Confirm Value Delete, click Yes
Disable Microsoft Teams from the startup tab in Task Manager
- Open the Task Manager. Either right-click the taskbar and click Task Manager, or click Start and search for Task Manager
- Click tab Startup
- Locate Microsoft Teams, right-click on it and choose Disable
You’ll notice the Auto-start application checkbox in Microsoft Teams settings is still enabled. Disabling Microsoft Teams from the Task Manager is not the cleanest way to do it, but still it’s very effective.
There are many roads that lead to Rome. I have outlined 3 ways to disable Teams auto start above, but there will be many more. For example via Powershell, or via a command in Teams.
Either way, it’s good to know that you can stop the Microsoft Teams auto-start. Because you use Teams sporadically, because Microsoft Teams decreases the performance of your PC, or simply because you want to keep control over your PC.
You can disable the Microsoft team from starting automatically on Windows 10 and here is how to. I recently enrolled in an online program that allows me to have access to Microsoft 365 Subscription for free, actually, the organization paid for the software on behalf of their students.
In the course of installing Microsoft 365 on my device, I also got the Microsoft team installed alongside, but to me, it’s kind of annoying to see the Microsoft Team boot automatically with my device at every new start, so i decided it was best for me to disable the Microsft Team from booting every time I power on my Windows 10 PC.
If you’re in the same shoe and would like to also disable the Microsoft Team application on your Windows 10, here is how to approach things. To have Team disabled is not far-fetched, you need not sign or have an account to disable the startup app.
1. Disable via Notification area in Taskbar
First, proceed to the notification area on your PC (as seen in the image below), find the Microsoft Teams icon in the system tray
Right-click on the purple Team icon and select Settings > Do Not Auto-Start Teams from the option.
Next, right-click on the icon again and then select “Quit.”
That should make the Microsoft Team app go away until you choose to launch it.
Sometimes the icon is not readily available on the System to try around the notification area, if this is the case for you, click on the up arrow (as seen in the image below) located to the left on your taskbar to see if the Team icon can be found in the list of additional icons displayed if you have the Microsoft Team running, the icon should be visible in the list of additional icons.
2. Disable Via Startup Apps in System Settings
Navigate to Settings > Apps > Startup on your Windows PC, the easier way can be pressing the Windows START button on your Keyboard, when the screen pops up, type in “Startup” in the search bar, you should see the “Startup App” icon under System Settings.
On the Startup Apps screen you can see a list of all the apps running on your PC and the default configuration, in most cases most of the apps are configured to start when you log in, you can just use the toggle to set your preference. On this page, you simply want to find the Team app and then press the toggle button to stop the Microsoft team app from starting automatcially whenever you login to your Windows 10.
3. Disable Via Task Manager
Another method to disable Team app is via the Task Manager in Windows 10, this is done in Widows startup program options in its Task Manager. You can launch the Task Manager by right-clicking the Windows taskbar and select “Task Manager.” You can also press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Even so, you can well use the Windows Button and then search for “Task Manager” in the search box.
Once you launch the Task Manager, click on “More Details”
On the Next Screen, find “Startup” in the tabs,
Locate the Microsoft Team app on the list of apps, right click to see option to disabled.
Yet another option might be to uninstall the Microsft Team app completely from your PC.
In the heat of the COVID-19 crisis, Microsoft Teams, a unified communication and collaboration platform is now used more than ever. Even though this is a great app not all of the employees have the need for it. After installation, Microsoft Teams starts automatically when the user logs in and that might be a problem.
If Teams app is used on a shared desktop (Xenapp and XenDesktop) environments it would be useful to prevent Microsoft Teams from auto-starting to save system resources.
Here’s how to prevent Microsoft Teams from auto-starting using Group Policy:
Create a new Group Policy object and in the left pane navigate to:
User Configuration | Preferences | Windows Settings | Registry
In the right pane create a new registry item for deletion.
Value Name: com.squirrel.Teams.Teams
Link this policy to Users container or if you need to link it to a Computer Container don’t forget to configure user Group Policy loopback processing mode at:
Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | Group Policy
Set configure user Group Policy loopback processing mode to Merge.
