How to stop selfies from appearing in the iphone’s selfies album

I do not want albums of selfies, people, etc. But if I delete the pictures from those albums, two bad things happens. First, iPhone tells me the photo will be deleted everywhere. Huh? Why can’t it stay on Camera Roll? I assume if it’s been downloaded it won’t be deleted from my laptop, but I haven’t actually done the experiment. Second, the next time I look at my photographs, those albums have been repopulated with photos. What I want is to prevent any automatic creation of albums. I can create all the albums I need! Is there any way to turn off automatic album creation for good and all?

Helpful answers

Thanks. Alas, Leonie, it is helpful of you to confirm my worst fears, but what Apple has done is the opposite of helpful. This convinces me is that my next phone must NOT be from Apple. As mentioned, I want the Camera Roll to be complete. If I want separate albums, I am capable of making them. I want NO automatic other albums. “Hiding” doesn’t help unless there’s a way to move those photos back to the Camera Roll. From what you say, and what I’ve looked for, once Apple’s software decrees that a photo belongs in an Apple-desired, the only way to get it back in Camera Roll is to download all the albums and move photos manually on my [non-Apple] laptop. Your software designers manifest a remarkable lack of thought or concern for users’ preferences by imposing automatic album creation with a penalty for not wanting it (deleting photos entirely from phone without a way to move them out of the Apple-Album and back to Camera Roll) and no way to turn off album creation. The phrase ‘arrogant ignorance’ comes to mind, but maybe it is worse than that: an automatic ‘Selfies’ album makes it easier and more compact for Apple to add to their Big Data collection everyone’s faces and the faces of their friends and family. Let me know if I’ve got that wrong. Thanks again.

You cannot delete the albums, that Photos is creating for you. They will appear automatically, if one of the photos in your library is matching the rules for this album. To prevent the People album from showing, you would have to delete all photos showing people or retouch the people out of the photo. To remove the Selfie album, you would have to delete all photos taken with the front camera. You can hide photos that you do not want to show in any album. https://help.apple.com/iphone/11/#/iphf14943e

Album are not storing albums, so the photos in the albums are no duplicates. Photos is storing a photo only once, but it can be used in many albums. if you delete a photo in Photos, it will be deleted from the photo library everywhere, not just from the album, where you are viewing it.

Photos has two kinds of albums:

  • Predefined albums, like Selfies, Panoramic, Live Photos, etc. These albums are smart albums, that are collecting all photos, that match a certain condition. Fir example, the Selfie album is showing all photos that have been taken with a front camera. The Panoramic album is collecting all photos with an extreme aspect ratio. The predefined albums are automatically created, because the iPhone has no support for custom smart albums created by the user. without these albums there would not be any way to search for front camera photos or panoramic photos. You cannot remove photos from smart albums, because they will automatically show all photos in the library matching the rules of the smart album. OS photos can only be removed by deleting them from the library.
  • User defined custom albums: If you create a custom album by selecting photos and adding them to an album you created, you can remove the photos again from the album, because the custom albums are not searching for the photos automatically.

On a Mac you can hide the predefined albums from the sidebar. Perhaps Apple will add this feature one day on the iPhone as well, if enough users request it.

The front camera on your iPhone flips photos when you capture them. Much to your surprise, it actually unflips them. If you are wondering why it does so then you should continue reading this article. Here in this guide, we share why your iPhone camera flips the picture.

You will also learn how you can take selfies without flipping and also flip photos on your iPhone that are already taken and stored on your Camera Roll.

Why Does My iPhone Camera Flip The Picture?

When you open your iPhone’s front-facing camera to take a selfie, you see a mirror image.

It is because of the fact that we are used to looking at ourselves in the mirror hence the camera is designed to show us exactly that.

However, once you tap on the capture button, the photo gets unflipped and then saved to Camera Roll. This means that the photo you see in the Camera Roll is an exact match to how you looked while capturing the photo and not what the Camera app showed.

It might seem strange at first but once you understand this then you will know that your selfie is actually unflipped.

For better understanding look at the screenshots below and observe the text on the book before and after taking the selfie. What you see on the left is a mirror image.

How to stop selfies from appearing in the iphone’s selfies album

If the iPhone front-facing camera didn’t unflip your picture then all your selfies will be mirror images and the ones clicked with the rear camera will be real or correct ones. This is of course is bizarre.

That said, we as users would like to have mirror selfies and mirror images. Fortunately, iOS has a setting to do it starting from the iOS 14 version. Let’s dive in!

Flip Photos On iPhone

There are two parts to this:

  • Taking photos or selfies that aren’t flipped (mirror image).
  • Unflip or flip (as you would usually call it) the photos that are already taken.

Here’s the solution for both of them.

How To Stop Pictures From Flipping Right Away

With iPhone Settings (Video)

Here’s how to unflip selfies permanently on iPhone with the phone settings. Note that you need to be at least on iOS 14 to see the option.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down, and then tap on Camera.
  3. Here, you will see a Mirror Front Camera.
  4. Toggle this on.
  5. Now, when you take a selfie, the front-facing camera will stop flipping or mirroring your selfies.

This app is also capable of resolving the second issue that I listed above. You can flip or unflip photos that are already existing on your iPhone using this app. To do so use the simple steps below.

  1. On the home screen of the app, tap on the Gallery icon and allow the app to access your Photos.
  2. Next, select the desired album and photo to flip.
  3. Swipe left or right to flip/unflip the photo.
  4. After flipping it, you can save the picture by tapping on the Share icon at the bottom right and select Save Image.

Now, your final photo is no longer mirrored.

There’s another similar app called Mirror (link) that you can try but it doesn’t have the feature to flip existing photos.

How To Unflip Selfies On iPhone After Capturing

While there used to be no way to prevent the front-facing iPhone camera from flipping your photos, you can unflip the old selfies later using any of these methods.

The Built-in Editor In The Photos App (Video)

Here’s how you can do it by using the built-in editor in the Photos app:

  1. Inside the Photos app, go to the selfie you want to unflip.
  2. There, tap Edit.
  3. Now, tap on the Rotatebutton on the lower section of the screen.

  1. Tap on the flip button to mirror the image horizontally.
  2. Lastly, tap on Done to save it.

  1. Now, tap on the Rotate tab and select Flip Horizontal.
  2. After that, tap on the Share icon at the top right and select Camera Roll.

The mirror image will be saved in the Photos app.

How do you turn off mirroring on iPhone?

You can turn off mirroring on iPhone by going to Settings > Camera > Composition > Mirror Front Camera. toggle it on and your selfies won’t be mirrored anymore.

What is mirror front camera on iPhone?

Mirror Front Camera on iPhone is a setting in your camera preferences that mirrors pictures taken on your front-facing camera. Once you turn it on and change to your front-facing camera, it will snap a photo that’s your mirror image, instead of flipping it as usual.

Now You Know How to Unflip iPhone Camera Photos

These were several methods you could use to flip photos on iPhone, mirror selfie, or unflip old photos. Whether they are taken in your Camera app or in a third-party app, you can flip them right while taking it. Also, you can unflip the old selfies as well, using two approaches, with the editor in the Photos app or with a third-party app like Photoshop Express.

If you found the information about the mirror image on iPhone helpful then don’t forget to share it on social media with your friends.

The new iPhone includes many improvements to the camera, including a great selfie flash feature that lights up the screen to provide some light fill into your selfies taken with the iPhone front facing camera. This basically uses a little software trick to add a flash to the front facing camera of iPhone, preventing you from having to turn the device around and take a picture of yourself without seeing your own mug in the process (oh the humanity!).

If you’re a big fan of taking great selfies and you take a lot of of pictures of yourself, then Selfie Flash is going to be a feature you’ll really appreciate because it genuinely improves the appearance of portraits taken with the iPhones front camera.

Use iPhone Selfie Flash to Take Better Selfie Portraits

Here’s how to use Selfie Flash on the iPhone front facing camera to take better selfies:

  1. Open your iPhone Camera app and tap the button in the corner to flip the Front Facing camera so you see yourself as intended
  2. Tap the little lightning bolt icon in the lower left corner of the Camera app and choose “On” to turn on the Selfie Flash feature (or change it to auto if you want to it to use the selfie flash based upon lighting interpretation)

Easy, and as you’ll see with portraits the results are greatly improved with a nice glow added to peoples faces, and less shadows.

You’ll see pretty quickly how the iPhone selfie flash feature works, basically it turns the entire screen white (well, off white really) for a brief moment while simultaneously boosting screen brightness, this creates a camera flash effect that is more subtle than your average camera flash, but works quite well for self portraits. Mac users may recognize the feature as how the camera flash works in Mac OS X too with Photo Booth taking pictures.

Selfie Flash even works with Live Photos too, but it does not activate during front facing video. Additionally, you’ll need the newest iPhones to have this feature, it is not active on prior models in the default Camera app.

As usual, all of your selfies, with flash or otherwise, are found in the Selfies photo album on iPhone.

If only Buzz Aldrin taking a selfie during an EVA in space had a selfie flash, right? This picture of him floating above earth could have been so much more filled in. Just kidding, we agree with Buzz, this is probably the best selfie ever. The famous monkey selfie is a close second though.

Did you know I took the first space selfie during Gemini 12 mission in 1966? BEST SELFIE EVER http://t.co/JfPAiVXmLk pic.twitter.com/DuwDXvcDmp

— Buzz Aldrin (@TheRealBuzz) July 19, 2014

It’s a simple trick, but much appreciated in how it improves the look of a portrait taken with the iPhone front camera.

Now, since taking pictures of yourself and posting them to the internet for other people to judge and comment on is perhaps the most important thing in the modern world and not at all narcissist or even slightly vapid, using the selfie flash is perhaps likely going to improve your selfie-centered life.

OK OK, sure this is all presented a little tongue in cheek, but seriously, selfies are very popular, and it’s a common and easy way to document a moment. Additionally, Selfie Flash legitimately makes selfies look better because it helps to illuminate the subjects and fill in shadows on faces, it’s a mini flash that is actually fairly soft and not as intrusive as the standard flash on a camera. This is the same reason as to why professional photographers use those big mirrors and white screens to reflect light, or use direct defuse light to make a portrait look better. Filling in with extra light works to improve the look of a picture, thus, the selfie flash works too.

The bottom line is, if you like taking selfies and want to take even better selfies, use that selfie flash on the iPhone camera. Of course this works best for upclose selfies, if you’re with a bunch of people you may want to just use the iPhone camera self timer for better group shots and staged selfies.

Originally, Echo devices were intended to feature audio control only, allowing you, the user, to instruct Alexa to do whatever you want it to do. That’s until the introduction of the Echo Show, which you could describe as the tablet version of the Amazon Echo.

How to stop selfies from appearing in the iphone’s selfies album

Why Echo Show?

With the Echo devices, Amazon has clearly intended to focus on audio commands for operating your smart home. These commands work perfectly and show that you don’t need a screen for ease of use. However, with the release of smart home products such as the Ring Doorbell and the Wyze Cam came a need for visual support.

And thus, the Echo Show was born. With an Echo Show, users can gain access to their surveillance equipment and also customize a full audio video experience.

Home Screen Background

Like with any touchscreen devices, you can set a new background for your Echo Show. In fact, you can personalize the entire on-screen visual experience to a greater extent than you might think.

  1. To change the appearance of the home screen, just swipe downwards from the top of the screen and then tap the gear icon (settings).
  2. Navigate to Home & Clock in this menu and then tap Clock.
  3. You’ll see a number of different categories on the screen. These include Recent Clocks , Modern , Classic , Playful , Personal Photos , and Photography . If that’s not enough, how about the fact that each of these categories has even more configuration options? For instance, the Classic category comes with 5 options: Zen , SchoolHouse , Stellar , and Kaleidoscope . Plus, every one of the 5 will shuffle through different backgrounds.
  4. If you want your home screen to stick to a particular background, navigate to the pencil icon (edit) and select a photo.

Adding and Removing Photos

Of course, you can add personal photos and even create slideshows. However, you won’t be able to do this from the Echo Show itself, even if you capture a picture using its front camera. To add custom photos to your Echo Show device, you’re going to have to either subscribe to Prime Photos or use the smartphone app.

  1. If you are a Prime Photos member, go to Settings on your Echo Show.
  2. Then tap Home & Clock, and select Clock.
  3. From this screen, select Personal Photos, then Background, and Prime Photos. This will access your Prime Photos subscription and allow you to choose one of the uploaded and set it as the home screen on your Echo Show.

How to stop selfies from appearing in the iphone’s selfies album

  1. Alternatively, you can use the Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet. Once you’ve entered the Background menu (as described above), select Alexa App Photo instead of Prime Photos.
  2. Now, open the Alexa app, go to Settings, and select Your Echo Show from the list. Then, select Home Screen Background and choose a photo from your phone that you want to upload.

You can’t really remove the home screen photo from your Echo Show. What you can do is select the most basic one available. Deleting the photo from your phone’s memory won’t affect the home screen and removing the photo from your Prime Photos account will only put up the default picture on your Echo Show.

Adding Home Cards

What are Amazon Home Cards anyway? Android phone and tablet users may see a resemblance to widgets. Essentially, the Echo Show is equipped with more useful features than the mere clock and background. With Home Cards, you can display Messaging, Reminders, Notifications, Upcoming Events, Trending Topics, Weather, Drop In, and other features on your home screen.

You can set these to shuffle continuously (the clock will no longer show up all the time) or to pop up whenever a notification arrives. Go to the settings screen again (gear icon), followed by Home & Clock, and look for the Home Cards feature on the list. From this menu, you can choose which cards you’d like to be shown and how you’d like them displayed (continuously or based on notifications).

Night Mode

Nighttime Mode dims the display of your Echo Show and filters out the notifications so that it won’t bother you (You could be sleeping or engaging in another bedroom activity, who knows?). Nighttime Mode is activated from the Home & Clock menu.

Personalizing Your Echo Show

As you can see, personalizing an Echo Show device is fairly simple and straightforward. Choose the clock display, the background photo, the desired Home Cards, the way you want them displayed, and toggle Nighttime Mode on or off for the ideal Echo Show user experience.

How have you personalized your Echo Show experience? Which are your favorite Home Cards? Have you experienced any problems along the way? Share with the community in the comments section below.

Users of Apple’s new phone, the iPhone XS, have accused the device of overly smoothing subject’s skin on photos taken with the front-facing camera. The skin-smoothing mode can’t be switched off.

This was first noted on Reddit, with photo evidence from Reddit user Chemicalsam who compared how his skin looked on 2017’s iPhone X versus the new iPhone XS. The resulting photo was a warmer image and contained fewer blemishes. Lewis Hilsenteger, host of Unbox Therapy on YouTube, saw similar results when testing Apple’s new phones against its older ones.

A comparison of the iPhone X and XS phones on Apple’s site shows both devices have the same seven megapixel front-facing camera built-in. Business Insider notes that Apple mentioned during their iPhone announcement event that the new A12 Bionic processor allows for additional noise reduction in selfie photos. The results of this could be overly-smoothed skin.

You can use Apple’s iPhone XS camera to take selfies without skin-smoothing, but it isn’t easy

If you prefer to not have selfies with airbrushing, you do have another option. While the new phone’s front-facing camera smooths out your skin, the rear camera takes shots that appear more realistic. So turn the phone around and take your selfie the old-fashioned way.

Doing this can be hard, but there are ways to make it easier. When using Apple’s camera app, either volume button can be used as a shutter button to take the picture. The all-glass back of the iPhone XS isn’t a better viewfinder than the phone’s screen, but it gives you a rough estimate of how the photo will look. While your photos will appear more accurate, you won’t frame anything properly without a bit of trial and error.

This is the latest development in a long line of photo filter controversies

Apple isn’t the first camera app maker to encounter photo filter troubles. Snapchat filters have caused contention with users for assigning users Eurocentric features, as well as filters that force digital blackface through a Bob Marley filter. In Apple’s case, however, the phone makes no mention of the skin-smoothing mode and doesn’t offer users an option to turn it off.

Samsung phone owners encountered a similar situation in 2016, where the phone smoothed out freckles and made people’s faces slimmer in self-shots.

According to 9to5Mac, photographer Abdul Dremali reached out to Apple about the issue. The company responded saying they are working on a fix.

You'll be able to see all of your hidden photos in there.

It's also possible to restore the photos back into your main Photos feed.

To restore a photo, tap on it and then tap the bottom-left icon again.

Then scroll along the options on the bottom row until you see 'Unhide' – then tap it.

Another option is to simply delete private photos.

Then you can navigate to the Recently Deleted folder, which contains those snaps.

They will disappear eventually though, so make sure to restore them before they auto-delete.
