How to stream ‘a charlie brown christmas’

Don’t worry, the Christmas classic will still air on TV!

The holiday season just isn’t complete without a dose of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang. And in a year like 2020 that’s been full of blows and upset, knowing how to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas this year will hopefully help lift some spirits.

You Can Stream A Charlie Brown Christmas

If you have Apple TV+, you can stream A Charlie Brown Christmas whenever you’d like starting on Dec. 4. But if you don’t have an Apple TV+ subscription, which costs $4.99 a month after a free seven day trial, and aren’t interested in adding another streaming service to your monthly bills, you will be able to stream A Charlie Brown Christmas for free on the Apple TV app from Dec. 11 to Dec. 13.

A Charlie Brown Christmas Will Also Air On TV

After some immediate upset surrounding news that the Charlie Brown holiday specials — including A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown — have moved to Apple TV+ and wouldn’t air on TV as they traditionally have, PBS announced it had teamed up with the streaming platform to broadcast A Charlie Brown Christmas on TV this year.

Mark your calendars: On Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. EST, A Charlie Brown Christmas will air ad-free on PBS and PBS KIDS.

For decades, the special has traditionally aired on networks like CBS and ABC. Why the change this year? That would be due to a deal made between Apple TV+ and Peanuts Worldwide and Lee Mendelson Film Productions announced in October. “Apple TV+ has teamed up with WildBrain, along with Peanuts Worldwide and Lee Mendelson Film Productions, to become the home for all things ‘Peanuts,’ bringing together new original series and specials, along with iconic beloved specials to fans around the world, all in one place,” Apple said in a press release.

You Can Also Buy The Christmas Special

If you prefer to have a physical copy of A Charlie Brown Christmas, you can always purchase the DVD at Best Buy or Target.

No matter how you choose to A Charlie Brown Christmas this December, hopefully there’s a moment for you and your loved ones to relax and sing along to “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” with Charlie and his friends. After all, 2020 has been full of “good grief” moments, so these simple pleasures have never been more needed.

The first-ever TV special based on Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts characters, A Charlie Brown Christmas, premiered on CBS in December of 1965 and has been a beloved holiday tradition ever since. Here’s how you can celebrate the holidays by streaming A Charlie Brown Christmas.

After decades of airing on CBS and then on ABC, A Charlie Brown Christmas moved exclusively to Apple TV+ in 2020 along with fellow Peanuts holiday specials It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. But thanks to fan outcry, A Charlie Brown Christmas will now also air on PBS while remaining available on Apple TV+.

Apple TV+

If you subscribe to Apple TV+ ($4.99 per month after a seven-day free trial), you can stream A Charlie Brown Christmas starting Dec. 4, 2020, and spend nearly the entire month of December with Charlie Brown and his friends as they put on a Christmas play.

If your local PBS affiliate is included, you can catch the special when it airs live, although it won’t be available via PBS’s on-demand services.

YouTube TV

Among streaming services that offer Live TV, YouTube TV ($64.99 per month after a seven-day free trial) is the only one to feature PBS, although it doesn’t include every local PBS outlet. Check the YouTube TV site to see if yours is available, and if so, then you can join Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang for A Charlie Brown Christmas when it airs live on PBS on Dec. 13, 2020.

With all of these different streaming options available, there’s no excuse to let the wonderful holiday tradition of watching A Charlie Brown Christmas pass you by this year.

The Peanuts holiday classic is heading to network TV for one night only.

We’re not the first ones to admit that everyone will be celebrating a very unconventional Christmas this year. While many long-held traditions have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, there are still a few holiday staples that have been able to withstand these weird, socially distanced times — and watching A Charlie Brown Christmas with your immediate family gathered ’round is one of them.

Earlier this year, loyal watchers learned that all of the Peanuts holiday classics — It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, and A Charlie Brown Christmas — wouldn’t air on public television like in years past. The news caused an uproar, resulting in more than 260,000 signatures on a petition to “Bring the Peanuts specials back to broadcast TV.” As a result, they announced that the holiday special would come back to network TV for one night only. A Christmas miracle indeed!

Tonight, the classic holiday special A Charlie Brown Christmas returns to broadcast television. That comes as a relief to many who feared that this and other Peanuts holiday special wouldn’t air due to a new exclusive streaming arrangement with Apple TV+. Luckily for them, Apple and PBS agreed to put the animated program on television and make it available to stream for free for a limited time. The program will air as an ad-free broadcast, but it will not be available through PBS.com or the PBS app. If you want to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas Special, here’s how to make sure you don’t miss it:

Audiences can catch A Charlie Brown Christmas on their local PBS station tonight. Check your local listings or your cable company’s channel listing to find your PBS station and confirm the time it is airing on December 13th. Again, A Charlie Brown Christmas won’t be available via your station’s livestream on PBS.org or through the PBS app.

If your local PBS station has a PBS KIDS channel, A Charlie Brown Christmas will air there. Check your local listings or cable channel list for the PBS KIDS channel and then turn it on tonight, December 13th, at 7:30 p.m. ET. PBS KIDS is also available via YouTube TV. As with the PBS website and apps, A Charlie Brown Christmas won’t appear on pbskids.org or the PBS KIDS Video App.

If you can’t catch the broadcast tonight, A Charlie Brown Christmas is available to stream for free — ad-free and in high definition — on Apple TV+ from December 11th through December 13th. Watch it there when you can.

In A Charlie Brown Christmas, “Linus reminds the Peanuts gang of the meaning of Christmas, in a beloved holiday classic. As Christmas approaches, Charlie Brown is depressed; he confides in Linus, who tries to cheer him. He visits Lucy’s psychiatric booth, but she’s no help. He tries throwing himself into the pageant, but it only makes him feel worse. Finally, he decides that they need a Christmas tree for their play — but his selection leaves the rest of the group laughing. Then Linus reads his friends the story of the Nativity, which prompts them to work on decorating the humble tree and exclaim gleefully, ‘Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown!'”

Christmas is finally upon us and families everywhere will be spending Thursday participating in whatever traditions they safely can this year. Some of those traditions probably include watching your favorite holiday movies before going to bed, and there are a ton of beloved Christmas films to choose from. A Charlie Brown Christmas, the iconic TV special from 1965, is undoubtedly one of the most popular amongst families everywhere, so you may be looking for a way to watch it this Christmas.

A Charlie Brown Christmas already aired on TV this year, having been broadcast on PBS back on December 13th. If you missed it, there is still a way to watch the special, don’t worry. It’s just that you’re going to have to go through Apple TV+.

Apple secured the exclusive rights to the beloved Peanut content, which includes the production of new titles, as well as the classic TV specials. A Charlie Brown Christmas isn’t available to stream or purchase digitally anywhere, except through Apple’s new streaming service. The same was true for It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Fortunately, if you don’t have Apple TV+, it won’t be hard to acquire, and you likely won’t have to pay any money to watch the Charlie Brown special. Apple TV+ offers a free seven-day trial to all new customers. Just sign up like any other streaming service and you get the first seven days for free.

If you’ve purchased any kind of Apple device recently, whether it’s a computer, phone, iPad, or Apple TV streaming device, you get a free year of Apple TV+. Still, if you didn’t purchase an Apple device recently, and you have already used the free trial, Apple TV+ is only $4.99 per month, so it may be worth it to you to pay for a single month in order to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas. (Just be sure to watch Ted Lasso while you still have the subscription.)

In case you’re wondering, the Apple TV+ app is available on streaming devices that aren’t made by Apple. If you’ve got a Roku, you can stream the app straight from that device.

Charlie Brown may not be available in the same places in 2020, but it’s still pretty easy to watch the beloved Christmas special.

Here’s when to tune in to the holiday classic.

One of our favorite Christmas traditions is snuggling up with hot cocoa to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas—but it’s one we didn’t think we’d get to do this year. A few months ago AppleTV+ announced they’d secured the exclusive rights to all the Peanuts holiday moviesmeaning the movies wouldn’t be airing on ABC this year as they have for decades. But luckily, Apple and PBS have made a deal to air A Charlie Brown Christmas on TV this year so everyone can watch the film for free. Talk about a Christmas miracle!

A Charlie Brown Christmas will air on PBS on Sunday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m. CST, so you can watch the holiday classic from the comfort of your own couch. AppleTV+ subscribers will be able to watch the film on the streaming platform beginning December 4. If you’re not a subscriber, you can also stream the movie for free on AppleTV (without making a subscription) from December 11 through 13.

A Charlie Brown Christmas first aired on December 9, 1965, and since then has become a nostalgic holiday staple in homes across the country. The film begins with Charlie Brown becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of Christmas spirit in his community. In an attempt to teach the others what Christmas is all about, he picks up the iconic scraggly Charlie Brown Christmas tree and asks his friend Linus to recite the true meaning of the holiday.

Of course, you can also pick up a DVD copy of A Charlie Brown Christmas ($7, Target) and watch it any time you want. And to really get into the holiday spirit, you can stream the movie soundtrack by the Vince Guaraldi Trio for free with Amazon Prime.

And if you’re craving more holiday fun from Lucy, Linus, and the rest of the gang, Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tales ($5, Target) is another one of our favorite ways to catch up with the Peanuts gang. The collection features these five holiday movies: Happy Holidays from Snoopy, Yuletide Greetings from Linus, Season’s Greetings from Sally, Peace on Earth from Lucy, and Merry Christmas from Charlie Brown.

We can’t wait to snuggle down with a warm drink and a batch of freshly-baked Christmas cookies for these feel-good holiday flicks.

This awesome, oddball origin story for Santa Claus features the voices of Jason Schwartzman, J. K. Simmons, Rashida Jones, and Joan Cusack and tells the story of a spoiled, entitled postman stationed in a run-down island town in the Far North who befriends a reclusive toymaker. ” />

At the time it came out, Ron Howard’s live-action spin on Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas was met with quasi-cringe, but over the years it’s endured as a sleeper holiday hit, particularly because of Jim Carrey’s hilariously wild and wooly take on the Grinch’s self-loathing and manic misanthropy. A young Taylor Momsen (Gossip Girl) also delights as Cindy Lou Who. ” />

This recent addition to Netflix is an imaginative, inventive Christmas musical that already feels like a timeless treat. Forest Whitaker stars as a sad and ruined toymaker who finds joy again thanks to his estranged granddaughter and several stirring dance numbers set to songs by John Legend and Philip Lawrence.” />

Those seeking some soothing Christmas crooning can’t go wrong with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney in this 1954 classic, featuring the songs of Irving Berlin. It’s comfort food of the highest order, steeped in the history of cinema and song.” />

Featuring the voices of Benedict Cumberbatch, Rashida Jones, Angela Lansbury, and Pharrell Williams, this 2018 animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ classic Christmas crankypants is full of warmth, wit, and rich visuals the entire family can enjoy.” />
