Before you start streaming, you’ll need to make sure AirPlay is enabled on your Apple TV. To do this, jump into the Settings menu, then scroll down to AirPlay.

Apple

Smart TVs are now integrating Apple’s AirPlay 2 technology. That was one of the big stories of CES 2019, where many TV manufacturers simultaneously announced AirPlay was coming to their TVs. Some are even updating existing TVs with AirPlay.

What Is AirPlay 2?

Apple’s AirPlay 2 standard lets you use Apple devices to control media playback, stream audio, mirror your screen, or do other similar things. It’s built into Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Think of it a bit like Apple’s version of Chromecast.

Previously, you could use AirPlay with your TV—but only if you purchased an Apple TV and connected it to your TV. There are unofficial AirPlay receiver software programs you can run on a PC or Mac connected to your TV, but nothing official. Now, AirPlay will be integrated into many smart TVs from many manufacturers.

This isn’t a replacement for Google’s Chromecast. We saw TVs that had both Chromecast and AirPlay integrated. You can use whichever your devices work best with. Choice is great!

AirPlay isn’t officially supported on Windows, but VideoLAN has announced plans to integrate AirPlay support into a future version of the popular VLC Media Player. VLC already has built-in support for Chromecasting, too.

What Can I Use It For?

Here are some things you can do with AirPlay:

  • Browse for something to watch on Netflix, iTunes, or another service on your iPhone and send it to your TV, using your iPhone to control playback. The TV will stream the content from the cloud.
  • Show photos and videos from your iPhone on the TV, controlling the presentation on your phone.
  • Play music (or any other audio) on your TV and synchronize it to multiple AirPlay 2-compatible speakers elsewhere in your home. to your TV.

How Can I Use AirPlay on a TV?

We saw AirPlay on smart TVs in action at CES 2019, and it will come to consumer TVs soon.

When you have a TV that supports AirPlay integration, that TV will appear as an AirPlay device on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can select your smart TV just like you’d select an Apple TV, HomePod, or other AirPlay-enabled devices.

In other words, it’s just like using AirPlay with an Apple TV today, but you don’t need any extra hardware.

How to stream videos from your iphone or ipad to an apple tv using airplay

We also saw TVs that integrated information about AirPlay right into their home screen. You can select the “AirPlay” option on your TV’s home screen to see instructions describing how to use AirPlay with your TV.

What About HomeKit and iTunes?

Some TVs are also integrating HomeKit support, which will let you use Siri to control your TV like any other another smart home device. Other TVs are integrating a built-in iTunes Movies & TV Shows app so you can watch iTunes videos on your TV without any Apple devices.

Different TV manufacturers are choosing to support different features. Some TVs have AirPlay and HomeKit but no built-in iTunes, while other TVs have AirPlay and iTunes with no built-in HomeKit.

Specifically, we know that Samsung TVs will get AirPlay 2 and iTunes, but not HomeKit. LG and Vizio TVs will get AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, but not iTunes. However, you can always stream video content from iTunes to your TV using AirPlay 2.

What TVs Will Support AirPlay?

Upcoming TVs from LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio will come with AirPlay 2 built in. Here’s the full list of TVs, from Apple’s website:

  • LG OLED (2019)
  • LG NanoCell SM9X series (2019)
  • LG NanoCell SM8X series (2019)
  • LG UHD UM7X series (2019)

  • Vizio E-Series (2019, 2018 and 2017)
  • Vizio D-series (2019, 2018 and 2017)

Vizio has also announced plans to update 2016 4K UHD SmartCast TVs with AirPlay 2, although this isn’t listed on Apple’s website:

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have confirmed that all 2016 4K UHD SmartCast Displays will support the Apple integration. -A

— VIZIO Support (@VIZIOsupport) January 8, 2019

Vizio told us that there will be a beta program in the US and Canada, where registered testers can receive this software update in Q1 2019. Following that, in Q2 2019, the update will be made available to everyone. If you have a Vizio TV that supports it, you’ll just turn on your TV one day and see a message saying it now supports AirPlay.

You can stream music from your iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone to your Apple TV using Apple’s AirPlay feature. This wireless option makes listening to your music on an Apple TV easy to do. We’ll answer the questions, “what is AirPlay”, and “what is Screen Mirroring”, as well as the differences between the features. Then, we’ll jump into how to AirPlay music on an Apple TV from an iPhone from Apple Music or a third-party app.

Screen Mirroring vs AirPlay: Are They the Same Thing?

A lot of people wonder if AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are the same thing. Both AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are Apple features that work wirelessly to transmit the content played on one device to another. The difference is that Screen Mirroring is a way to share your whole screen so someone else can see exactly what you’re viewing on your display. AirPlay is a way of streaming content like audio or video from an app without sharing everything happening on your screen. AirPlay also uses less battery power than Screen Mirroring. We have an article about how to screen mirror to a TV from an iPhone or iPad if you’d like to learn about that. In this article, we’ll focus on AirPlay.

For example, any iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 4.2 or newer will have AirPlay built-in, which makes mirroring a cinch. A hardwired connection will get the job done.

You can connect your Apple device directly to your TV by using an adapter and HDMI cable.

For iPhone and iPad owners with a device that has a Lightning port, you’ll need to pick up Apple’s $49 Lightning Digital AV Adapter. If you have a 2018 iPad Pro or newer, you’ll need Apple’s $69 USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. For Macs with USB-C ports, you can use the same USB-C adapter as the iPad Pro. Otherwise, you’ll need a USB-to-HDMI adapter like this one on Amazon .

To use an adapter with your iPhone or iPad, plug it into the bottom of your phone or tablet, connect your charger to the adapter and then plug in your TV’s HDMI cable. Mac users will need to plug in the adapter and connect to the HDMI cable. Your device will automatically recognize it’s connected to an external display and will show up on your TV as long as you have the input for your HDMI connection selected. You don’t have to adjust any settings — it just works.

Since updating to AppleTV Os15 (Apple TV 4k), I can no longer find my Airplay capable receiver in the pull-down audio menu while watching something on Apple TV. I am able to connect by going to settings/video and audio and selecting it as a "temporary output device", so Airplay is still functioning, but it's a heck of a lot less convenient. I fear this is an effort by Apple to coerce us all into buying Homepods. Since I have a very nice surround sound set-up as it is, I have no intention to do so. Anyone have any ideas ?

Thank you for your response. As I mentioned in my query, I am aware of how to engage Airplay via the audio output/temporary output. My point is that what was once a simple and quick way to start Airplay is now an inconvenient, multi-step process. As for the control center route. I was not aware of this. At first, I thought that this was the solution. Just as simple as previously. However, I did try this and the end result is that the video and audio are WAY out of sync. Totally useless. I am left wondering why the pull-down option was changed when it worked perfectly well.

Thanks again for your help !

How to stream videos from your iphone or ipad to an apple tv using airplay

There are two major different ways you can connect or stream your iPhone or iPad to your TV. The easiest and cheapest way (if you already own an Apple TV) is to use AirPlay, which will allow you to enable iPhone screen mirroring. Alternatively, you can hook up your iPhone or iPad to your TV with an HDMI cable. If your TV doesn’t have an HDMI port, you can use a VGR or AV adapter and cable to connect to your analog TV. But that’s a fairly small pile of people, since the vast majority of TVs have HDMI ports. Which is why I’m going to focus on how to connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV via AirPlay mirroring or with an HDMI cable and adapter. Regardless of what method you choose, it may take a little money to hook your iPhone up to your TV. Which is why, if you already have an Apple TV, I recommend using AirPlay mirroring to watch your iPhone or iPad on your TV. However, I’ll go over both methods and what you need to hook up your iPhone or iPad to your TV below.

Wirelessly streaming your iPhone or iPad your TV is a dream with AirPlay screen mirroring. Once you get the hang of using it, it’s the quickest way to connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV on a regular basis. And it’s a great way to just quickly share a funny video you’re watching on your small device with the rest of the room via your larger TV screen. Since HDMI cables and the iPhone to HDMI adapter you’re going to need will cost a bit of money, you may consider getting an Apple TV (even an older 3rd gen) if you plan to connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV often.

Step One: Choose Your Method

AirPlay Screen Mirroring with Apple TV:

This is, in my opinion, the easiest way to watch your iPhone or iPad on your TV. That’s because if you already have your Apple TV set up, you don’t need any new cables or programs to AirPlay your iPhone screen to your TV screen. I’ll go over how to use AirPlay below.

HDMI with an AV Adapter:

If you already own an HDMI cable, this method could be the easiest for you. All you need on top of the HDMI cable is an AV adapter to plug into your iPhone or iPad. HDMI is the second easiest way to connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV, you just need the proper cables.

How to Mirror iPhone or iPad to TV Using AirPlay with Apple TV

iPhones or iPads running iOS 4.2 or later are capable of screen mirroring to an Apple TV 2nd generation or later.

This is great because it means devices old and new can use AirPlay. There are two different ways to AirPlay content from your iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV. You can AirPlay the content you’re playing via Youtube, Netflix, etc., or you can AirPlay your entire iPhone or iPad screen. The methods are very similar with slight differences; here’s how to use AirPlay:

How to AirPlay Specific Now Playing Content from iPhone or iPad to Apple TV

  • Wake your Apple TV up. Then make sure your Apple TV and iOS device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • On your iPhone or iPad, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center.
  • Swipe left to open the Now Playing screen.

How to Hook Up Your iPhone or iPad to Your TV with HDMI

For this method, you need a TV with an HDMI port, an HDMI cable, and a Lightning Digital AV adapter so you can connect your iPhone or iPad. You can find an HDMI cable at any store that sells electronic accessories. I’ll include a couple options for both the HDMI cable and Lightning AV adapter below with links. Once you have the cable and adapter you need, it’s the simple task of connecting the ‘dots’. First though, let’s cover the gear you need.

HDMI Cable & Lightning Digital AV Adapter

There are Digital AV adapters available for iOS devices with 30-pin Dock connectors, which you can find on Apple’s website. As you’ll see below, these cables and adapters can quickly add up in price, which is why I recommend buying a used or refurbished Apple TV and AirPlaying your content to your TV. Nevertheless, here’s where you can get what you need to hook up your iPhone or iPad to your TV with HDMI.

How to Connect Your iPhone or iPad to TV with HDMI

  • Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the port on your Lighting-to-HDMI adapter.
  • Now, your HDMI cable and adapter are connected to your TV. Plug the Lightning end of the adapter into your iPhone or iPad.

  • Turn your TV on and switch to the input that matches where you plugged in your HDMI cable.
  • Hopefully you bought an AV adapter with an extra port for charging your device while streaming content. Plug your iPhone or iPad in to charge while it’s connected to your TV, otherwise your phone may die halfway through a movie.

There you go! Your iPhone or iPad is now connected to your TV and streaming content.
