Facebook’s new Oculus Go virtual reality (VR) headset ships with access to over 1000 apps. But what if you want to load your own content onto the device, be it 360-degree clips, or simply regular videos that you might want to watch in the comfort of the Go’s virtual movie theater?
Luckily, uploading files to the Go isn’t hard at all. The device comes with a micro USB port for charging purposes. However, you can also use the same port, and even the USB cable that the Go ships with, to connect the headset to your computer’s USB port and transfer data. How exactly this works depends on your computer:
Mac users first need to download the Android File Transfer tool, a free application made by Google. After installing and running it, you simply connect your computer and Go via USB. Upon connecting, the headset is going to ask whether you want to “allow access to data,” complete with a helpful explanation that “the connected device will be able to access files on this headset.” Select accept, and you are ready to go.
Windows users don’t even need any extra software. Simply need to connect the USB cable to their PC. Is there a way to play VRvideo files on my PC by streaming them through the link cable to my Quest 2? I know I can transfer the file from pc to quest 2 storage & watch it. I know I can use the quest 2 browser to stream it over the web. I want to play VRvideo directly from the PC via the link cable, without copying it to my quest 2 before. Using the virtual desktop app doesn’t help either because when I launch the file on the virtual desktop of my PC, it doesn’t play in VR, but the side by side view that the desktop would play it as.

So for those new to VR, like me, I’ll share my solution. Honestly, I’m shocked that there was no one who could help me with this, as it’s very simple in the end. If you have a player on your Oculus Quest (I use Skybox), it will play files on your quest. If you have a player on your PC(again, I use Skybox), it will play files on your PC. If you load Oculus Link & connect to your PC via the link cable, then launch Skybox from the PC, you are then able to stream VR video files to your headset as they are played on the app on the PC. Simple. The only downside is that I was only able to play up to 5k without stutter or lag. I don’t know if this is a PC issue or a data transfer speed issue.
Hi guys, as the title suggested, I am having issues watching 3D Movies via Virtual Desktop. Prior to getting VD, I loaded the 3D movies and watched them thru DeoVR Video player on the quest but this got old quickly because of the limited storage on the Quest and the slow transfer time it takes to load each movie.
I decided to dl VD today and when I access the movie, it opens it up in VLC (which is what I use on my desktop to watch movies) but the movie is in flat 2D with the 2 images side by side and I can't figure out how to change it to 3D mode like I was easily able to with the DeoVR player. Please help this noob!

I got it! It's tricky to get it belive me it needs a tutorial. the video quality is better than skybox and bigscreen but the subtitle is poping-out. Is there a way to make the subtitle look normal.
Man, why is this so difficult? Feels like they should make this function a central feature. I'd happily pay to rent a title if they had a 3D movie store built-in, a la iTunes, Prime, etc.
I'm trying to find a way to watch Love by Gaspar Noe in 3D, and it seems to be impossible.
It's really easy. Get skybox. Install it on your PC and Quest. Drag 3D movies to it on the PC and you can then stream those from the PC to your headset.

As far as I know you don't 🙁 The only way I have been able to watch 3D movies is through skybox on a local network. I have 3D movies through my dlna media server, but so far have not found a way to watch them except locally. Skybox works pretty good if you have them in a shared folder on the same network.

If you've used it less than 2 hours you can refund it. If you have half decent PC and router it's worth keeping. I use it all the time 🙂 and there's a menu item for videos that is not working atm, but says it is being worked on. I'm hoping that will solve my movie problem. I have been able to use it to play rift games at my friends place over internet 🙂
Thanks, I figured out how to set up a dlna server and watch movies that way via DeoVR. My question is — is the dlna server only able to see the movies on my desktop's video folder? I have my movies on an external, how do I get the computer to see those files?
Yo I got you, totally possible. I think there's a better way than what I did. But it works for me so imma pass it on.
You already have VD which is good. You need to download sidequest on your pc and sign up and all that. Buy the version of VD on side quest that will allow you to use Steam. It'll be free for you aince you alfeady purchased VD from oculus. From there, download your video player lile DeoVR and it'll pull from your pc.
What I have to do each time is connect my quest to the pc with the charging cable so that side quest reads your quest. I have to do that each time I use my quest for PC apps wirelessly. Once sidequest is connected to the quest (it'll show on the sidequest app window), you don't need to be connected anymore and you can go wireless. From here, start up VD (the sidequested version), start up steam, and go from there to your video player or games.

During Facebook’s recent F8 developers conference, Mark Zuckerberg announced that everyone in attendance would be walking home with a brand new Oculus Go – the company’s brand new standalone VR headset. On top of that, the device became available in 23 countries in total via the Oculus website, Amazon, and your local Best Buy store.

Connecting your Oculus Go to your computer will allow you to view and manage the storage space on your headset. You can then pull media files out of the headset and onto your desktop to clean things up and help better identify exactly how much space you have left.
The potential of this side-transfer option opens up a plethora of possibilities for the Oculus Go. With the right configuration the device could theoretically be used within a work environment or in the field of innovation.

Tips & Tricks
VR gear and software can be challenging and you can get stuck on a few things. Check out this list if you encounter problems with watching videos in VR:
- If you enable VR playback but the video looks ‘funky & unnatural’ it means you need to adjust geometry and stereoscopy settings. Video containers do not carry such meta data. Use the display mode controls in the player to switch between 2D, 180, 360 and cube projections and additionally adjust the stereoscopy (none, side-by-side or bottom-down):
- If you don’t have touch controllers, it’s still possible to use VR 360 player with Oculus. Use your Oculus Remote to display/hide the player UI with a click. With UI visible there will be a tracker on your line of sight. Look at the menu item and click with your remote to activate it 🙂
- VR SDKs do not always correctly detect if a VR headset, sensors and controllers are connected. Always worth to check with apps such as SteamVR if your system detects all devices and they are tracked correctly.
- We have implemented OpenVR SDK support (and Oculus SDK support is coming next week). For now, if you use Oculus Gear with Opera, please install Steam and SteamVR to switch from Oculus to OpenVR drivers.
- Some laptops or desktops with a dedicated GPU (graphics processing unit) may not enable hardware acceleration for video decoding and will switch to software decoding instead. It relates to decoding VP8 and VP9 video formats hosted, mostly, by YouTube. We have not implemented this path yet, but you can force Opera to use your system’s dedicated GPU. Check here how to do that easily. Alternatively, you can enforce h264 YouTube video encoding with an extension like h264ify (you need to install Download Chrome Extension first).
- This VR 360 player does not work with phone based mobile VR sets such as Google Cardboard.
