Print Spooler Service is Not Running

The “Print Spooler Service is not running” error in Windows 10 occurs while you are trying to install a printer on your computer.

The error report reads “Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running”. In most cases, this error can be fixed by restarting the print spooler service.

If this does not fix the problem, the Print Spooler Service error on your computer might be related to corrupted drivers or printer programs.

1. Restart Print Spooler Service

Follow the steps below to Restart the Print Spooler service on your computer.

2. Update Printer Driver

Alternatively, you can fix printer offline issue by installing Windows 10 update: KB3147458 (Windows 10 only). Microsoft released KB3147458 update exclusively for Windows 10 users only. This update helps improve the notification of printers when a device wakes up from sleep mode. This update prevents your printers from going offline, especially when you’re using wireless connections.

This will fix the issue, and now onwards you don’t get printer offline error on your Windows PC.

If you still get the Printer Offline message

If you still receive the printer offline message whenever your print an email or document, you have to investigate this further. In most of the cases, any of the above fixes will do the trick. If not, there are few more things that you should try.

Your printer might appear offline if it can’t communicate with your PC. Try following these steps to get your printer back online.

To find out if your printer is connected to Wi-Fi, see if your printer’s built-in menu has options for checking its Wi-Fi connection, or check the printer’s manual for instructions about how to add it to a Wi-Fi network.

Turn off your printer and unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug your printer back in, and then turn the printer back on. Sometimes power-cycling your printer like this can resolve the issue.

Select the Start button, and then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners . Select your printer and then select Open queue. Under Printer, select Set As Default Printer, and clear Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline if they are selected. If you see a message that says, “Windows will stop managing your default printer for you,” select OK.

Note: If you select OK, Windows will stop automatically setting the last printer you used as your default printer. To re-enable this feature, select the Start button, and then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners > Let Windows manage my default printer.

Select the Start button, and then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners . Select your printer and then select Open queue. Under Document Name, select any documents listed, and under Document, select Cancel.

In the search box on the taskbar, type services, and then select Services in the list of results. Find the Print Spooler service, right-click it, and select Restart.

Select the Start button, and then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners . Select your printer, select Remove device, and then select Yes. Under Printers & scanners, select Add a printer or scanner and follow the instructions to re-add the printer.

Rebooting your PC can sometimes help to refresh the services and components necessary for your device to communicate with your printer.

When you connect a printer to your PC or add a new printer to your home network, you can usually start printing right away. Windows supports most printers, and you probably won’t have to go out of your way to install special printer software. If you’re using Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, additional printer support and drivers are available through Windows Update.

To install a printer

In most cases, all you have to do to set up a printer is to connect it to your PC. Simply plug the USB cable from your printer into an available USB port on your PC, and turn the printer on.

For wireless printers with Windows 8.1:

Note: If you have a new wireless printer that hasn’t been added to your home network, read the instructions that came with the printer to learn how to add it. Check the printer manufacturer’s website to learn more and to get up-to-date software for your printer.

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings. (If you’re using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)

Tap or click PC and devices, and then tap or click Devices. If your printer is installed, it should appear under Printers.

If your printer isn’t listed, tap or click Add a device, and then select your printer to install it.

To install (add) a local printer

Click the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, click Devices and Printers.

Click Add a printer.

In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a local printer.

On the Choose a printer port page, make sure that the Use an existing port button and the recommended printer port are selected, and then click Next.

On the Install the printer driver page, select the printer manufacturer and model, and then click Next.

If your printer isn’t listed, click Windows Update, and then wait while Windows checks for additional drivers.

If none are available and you have the installation CD, click Have Disk, and then browse to the folder where the printer driver is located. (For additional help, consult the printer manual.)

Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then click Finish.

Tip: You can print a test page to make sure the printer is working correctly. If you’ve installed the printer but it doesn’t work, check the manufacturer’s website for troubleshooting information or driver updates.

To install a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer

If you’re trying to add a network printer at the office, you’ll usually need the name of the printer. If you can’t find it, contact your network administrator.

Click the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, click Devices and Printers.

Click Add a printer.

In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.

In the list of available printers, select the one you want to use, and then click Next. (If your computer is connected to a network, only printers listed in Active Directory for your domain are displayed in the list.)

If prompted, install the printer driver on your computer by clicking Install driver. If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then click Finish.

Tip: Available printers can include all printers on a network, such as Bluetooth and wireless printers or printers that are plugged into another computer and shared on the network. You might need permission to install some printers. You can confirm the printer is working by printing a test page.

Note: After your printer is installed, you can keep it up to date with automatic Windows 7driver updates.

Troubleshoot printer problems

Start by checking your hardware

Make sure that the printer’s electrical cord is plugged into an electrical outlet and that the power switch is turned on. If you’re printing to a shared printer or a printer on a network, make sure that all necessary computers and routers are turned on too. If your printer or other equipment is plugged in to a surge protector or a backup power supply, make sure that hardware is plugged in and turned on as well.

If you’re using a wired printer, make sure that the printer cable is properly connected from the printer to your PC.

For wireless printers, check the wireless connection. Make sure the printer’s wireless option is turned on and available. Many printers have a button that displays a blue wireless icon when wireless is available.

Next, run the printer’s wireless connectivity test. Read the instructions that came with the printer or check the printer manufacturer’s website for instructions about how to do this.

Use a troubleshooter

A troubleshooter is an automated tool that can find and automatically fix some problems with your PC. The printing troubleshooter can fix problems with installing and connecting to a printer.

Update drivers

Most printers require driver software to work properly. If you recently upgraded from one version of Windows to another, it’s possible that the current printer driver is for the previous version of Windows. If you’ve had recent power outages, viruses, or other computer problems, it’s possible that the drivers have become damaged. Downloading and installing the latest driver for your printer can resolve these types of problems.

Three ways to find and install a driver:

Use Windows Update. Windows Update might have an updated version of your printer driver.

Install software from the printer manufacturer. If your printer came with a disc, that disc might contain software that installs a driver for the printer.

Download and install the driver yourself . You can search for a driver on the manufacturer’s website. Try this if Windows Update can’t find a driver for your printer, and the printer didn’t come with software that installs a driver.

For Windows 8.1

To print webpages using Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, select Print, and then select Print again. See what the printed page will look like by selecting Print Preview. Or, print pages by pressing Crtl + P.

To print only a picture from a page (and not the whole page), right-click on the picture, and select Print. In the Print dialog box, select Print again.

For Windows 7

To print webpages using Internet Explorer, press Crtl + P and choose which of your installed printers to print from.

If you are experiencing problems with your printer, the troubleshooting tips below may help you resolve the issues.

Printer does not have power indicator

First, make sure that the printer is turned on. When a printer is on, it should have some light or LED (usually green) indicating it’s receiving power.

If you do not have any indicator light, make sure the printer is connected to a working power outlet by verifying each end of the power cable. Next, press the printer power button.

If, after performing the above steps the printer still does not display a power status indicator light, your printer may have a serious internal hardware issue. We suggest contacting the printer manufacturer for repair or replacement.

Cables not connected properly

Your printer should have two cables connected to it: the power cable and the data cable. Make sure the power and data cables (parallel cable or USB cable) are connected to both the printer and computer.

Printer error (orange or blinking light)

After your printer has completed its initial startup, you’ll see a solid colored light. If the indicator is orange or blinking, often this is an indication of a printer error. A paper jam or an issue with the ink or toner cartridge can cause the error.

As there are not standards for all printers, if you see a blinking light, visit the manufacturer’s website or review the printer manual for specific error details.

No paper or paper jam

Without paper, your printer cannot print. Make sure there is paper loaded into the printer paper cartridge or tray. Next, verify that no printer paper is jammed or partially fed into the printer. If you suspect paper is stuck somewhere it shouldn’t be, refer to our help page for paper jams.

Inkjet printer ink related issues

Often when you’re encountering an ink related issue, your printer status indicator light (mentioned above) should be flashing. If this is not occurring, you may want to skip to the next section. However, if you’ve recently inserted a new ink cartridge, you may want to try the below suggestions.

Printer self-tests

Most printers have a way of printing a test page. A printer test page allows you to determine if the printer is working. The printer self-test is usually accomplished by holding down a series of keys. If you don’t know to access and use the self-test feature on your printer, refer to the printer manual or visit the printer manufacturer’s website.

You can also perform a software self-test to determine if the computer can see the printer and it’s able to print. Follow the steps below to perform this test.

Microsoft Windows users

Older versions of Windows with older printers

If you have an older printer and run MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT, you can also attempt the following software test.

The above should take the directory listing and print it to the printer. If this does not print, refer to your operating system troubleshooting section.

The above command doesn’t do a paper feed, so you need to press your FF or PP options on the printer, or you can try manually ejecting the paper.

Printer drivers

If your printer does not have any flashing lights and is connected properly, it’s possible you may be encountering a driver related issue. We suggest visiting our printer driver listing, which links to all major printer manufacturer driver pages, and download the latest drivers for your printer.

Parallel (LPT) printers

If the printer you’re connecting to the computer is an LPT (parallel port) printer, we also suggest verifying the below settings if your printer is not working.

Parallel port in CMOS

  1. Enter the computer’s BIOS setup.
  1. Once in CMOS, verify that the parallel port is enabled or installed.
  2. Next, verify the printer or parallel port mode. If your parallel port is set to ECP mode, we suggest trying a different mode.

Other parallel device

If you use a parallel printer with other parallel devices, such as a scanner, temporarily disconnect these devices to verify they are not causing issues with your printer.

When you connect a printer to your PC or add a new printer to your home network, you can usually start printing right away. Windows 10 supports most printers, so you probably won’t have to install special printer software. Additional printer drivers and support might be available if you update Windows 10.

Note: If your PC is running Windows 10 S, some printers might not work with it, or they might have limited functionality. For more info, see Device support on Windows 10 S.

If your printer is on and connected to the network, Windows should find it easily. Available printers can include all printers on a network, such as Bluetooth and wireless printers or printers that are plugged into another computer and shared on the network. You might need permission to install some printers.

Are you unable to print or scan after a Windows 10 update or upgrade?

If so, make sure you have restarted Windows at least once. To Restart, click the lower left Start button, click and select Restart.

If problems persist, then make sure your printer is compatible with Windows 10.

If your printer is compatible with Windows 10, download and run the Print and Scan Doctor to detect and fix isses.

If problems persist, reinstall the latest HP printing software.

Trying to narrow down the cause and fix the problem can be challenging and time-consuming. Instead, let Windows itself come to your rescue via its built-in troubleshooters.

Available in any supported version of Windows, the built-in troubleshooters target specific types of problems based on the feature or category. Having trouble connecting to the internet? Run the Internet Connections troubleshooter. Bluetooth headaches? Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. The troubleshooter analyzes the problem, suggests a solution, and in some cases even implements the fix itself. Let’s see how the Windows troubleshooters can pinpoint and resolve problems.

Run From Control Panel

Troubleshooters are accessible in Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. In Windows 8.1 or 7, you access the troubleshooters from Control Panel. In Windows 10, you can run them either from Control Panel or Settings. I’ll try it from Control Panel first, so you can follow along no matter which version of Windows you use.

Okay, let’s say you’re being plagued by a persistent problem in Windows. You may have already tried various methods to resolve the issue, but you’re still stuck with it. Open Control Panel in large icon view and double-click on the icon for Troubleshooting.

Older peripheral devices such as printers may not function properly after upgrading to Windows 10. If you are using a Canon printer, then you should first take a look at Canon’s website to see the list of printers that will work with Windows 10.

If your printer model figures in the list but you are still facing printer problems, we have set out some possible solutions below.

Problem 1: Canon printer does not work in Windows 10

The first thing you need to do is to check if your Canon printer is switched on and connected to the PC in question. This may seem basic but it is surprisingly easy to overlook! If your printer is still not working, follow the steps set out below:

  1. Try running the printing Troubleshooter provided by Microsoft
  2. If that doesn’t solve the issue, it means that your printer may need new Printer Drivers. Check the printer manufacturer’s website for compatible Printer Drivers that will work with Windows 10.

Before installing the new Printer Drivers, you need to uninstall the printer by following the steps given below

  1. Open Start menu
  2. Click Devices and Printers
  3. Select your Canon Printer
  4. Select Remove Device from the top of the screen
  5. Reinstall the printer
  6. If Windows does not find a Driver, browse the printer manufacturer website for Drivers.
  7. Download the Driver and follow the instructions given by the printer manufacturer.

Alternatively you can get a Driver Update Tool to update the Drivers for you and keep them updated. To check for Driver Updates, follow the instructions on the Canon Drivers page.

Problem 2: No Windows 10 Printer Driver for your printer

Not all printer manufacturers are offering new Drivers that will work with Windows 10. In some cases, you might see the printer manufacturer has ended the support to the printer model you own. However, there is a way around this issue.

If your printer manufacturer is not offering Windows 10 compatible Printer Drivers, you can try Windows 8 Printer Drivers as they may work. In most cases, the Printer Driver is a .exe file. You need to uninstall the printer by starting from Step 4 above.

After you have removed the printer, you need to click on .exe Driver file and install the Printer Driver.

Problem 3: Printer is detected but you don’t have the Driver for the older printer

If your printer is detected after the upgrade, you need to follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer. When Windows 10 scans for connected devices, it will give you a few options if it does not find any Drivers. Here are the steps you need to follow

  1. Click the “The printer that I want isn’t listed” option. (Since we are adding a local printer, we will not discuss Network printer’s options that Windows gives you.)
  2. Select the option that says “My printer is a little older. Help me find it.”
  3. Click Next
  4. Windows 10 will now again search for the connected printer and hopefully install the printer using compatible Drivers in its database.

My mx870 will not scan to my new lenovo p73 laptop with windows 10. It did scan to the old toshiba in windows 7. The printer prints just fine from the new windows 10 Lenovo. NEED SOLUTION ASAP for business.

My Cannon Image Class D1320 will print from my laptop but will not make regular copies; just gives me blank sheets.

Windows 10 recognizes my printer but the Canon driver doesn’t.

MY CANNON TS5120 WILL NOT PRINT. I HAVE REPLACED IT WITH NEW INK, BUT IT SHOWS EMPTY. THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE. THE INK CARTRIDGES BE FORE SHOWED LOW BUT PRINTED FOR A LONG TIME, WHEN THE COPIES STARTED FADING I BOUGHT NEW INK AND THEN THE MACHINE SHOWED EMPTY.

I bought this canon pixma recently( a couple of Months ago) and it doesn’t print much at all. the only time it seems to print is if it asks if I want to save as a pdf file. I can’t print anything off the internet unless it specifically asks for me to save as this type of file. Even trying to print from office files, nothing.
