Facebook killed their M chat bot a few months back because it was more artificially stupid than artificially intelligent. Unfortunately, it lives on as the equally unintelligent M Suggestions in Facebook Messenger. Here’s how to turn those off.

What is Facebook M?

Facebook M was a virtual assistant chat bot that actually used humans to do most things. Facebook’s plan was to use the humans to train the chat bot, and then phase out how much the humans had to do. This didn’t work.

A lot of noise was made in the press about Facebook M, but it was only ever available to around 2,000 Californians. The human end of things could never really scale to more.

At the start of this year, Facebook pulled the plug on M as an independent chat bot. Instead, it lives on in M Suggestions based off what they learned from working with the chat bot. It doesn’t, however, seem like they’ve learned that much.

M Suggestions pop up based on the context of your conversations. It can do things like:

  • Suggest some appropriate stickers for a reply.
  • Pay or request money.
  • Share your location.
  • Help you make plans.
  • Start a poll so you can get a group of people to decide what to do.
  • Hail an Uber or Lyft.

If these sound like kind of things you can quickly and easily do with, say, an app or by using your words, you’d be right. I’ve found that M Suggestions are at best, irrelevant. At worst, they’re actively in the way, and I often tap them by mistake.

How to Turn Off Facebook M Suggestions

To turn off Facebook M Suggestions, open Facebook Messenger, and then tap your profile icon. On iOS, it’s at the top left of the screen; on Android it’s at the top right.

Scroll down and select the “M Settings” category.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

To get rid of M suggestions, just turn the “Suggestions” toggle off.

And just like that, M will annoy you no more. If it ever does start being actually useful, you can always turn it back on.

A while back, I wrote a post about clearing the Facebook Messenger notification icon when there were actually no unread messages. The post quickly blew up, showing that there were a lot of people who were frustrated with getting a notification when there were clearly no unread messages to be found. Just read the comments at the bottom of that post and you’ll see what I mean.

As a result of that post, though, another user mentioned that they weren’t so much frustrated with the Messenger notifications in the mobile app as they were with the annoying Facebook Messenger popups that occur when you are browsing the desktop site. Basically, she was looking for a way to turn off Facebook Messenger in the desktop view. Or at least limit how annoying it is.

If you use the desktop version of Facebook a lot AND you use Facebook Messenger, you’ll know exactly what she’s talking about. Those annoying pop-ups that show all the conversations that are going on in Messenger. It’s almost like Messenger is invading your Facebook timeline by covering up your feed, and irritating you as the conversation continues.

Here’s the comment that the original commenter made on the other post:

My frustration isn’t the notification button, but I came across your blog while searching for a solution to this issue, “why do messenger windows keep popping up, after I have read, and responded to them?” So, while on my desktop, which is where I usually am, I go through all the new facebook notifications. Each time I click on a notification, the browser then takes me to that page, and with that navigation, the last 3, or more, messenger windows pop up again, taking up real estate on my monitor. I constantly have to “x” them out, but when I navigate to another page, they pop up again. So pissed that this issue is wasting my time. Unlike most people on facebook, I am responding to business, client questions, and trying to make a living. Oye.

–Lisa James

I now exactly how she feels and have had times when I just wanted to completely turn off Facebook Messenger completely. Heaven forbid you engage in a group discussion on Messenger that becomes very active. The back-and-forth between those involved in the Facebook chat can pretty much overwhelm any browsing your are engaged in via your feed.

Sure, you can go in and mute the Facebook Messenger conversations 1 by 1, but that gets really annoying. It kind of feels like that “Pop-Up Video” show from VH1 that was out a while back.

The good news, however, is there is a way to turn off that Facebook Messenger “feature” and stop Facebook from overwhelming the desktop experience with notifications. You aren’t technically turning off Facebook Messenger, but you are disabling the notifications and limiting the number of chat popups that can overwhelm the desktop site.

To turn off the Facebook Messenger Notifications within the desktop view of Facebook:

Step 1 – Login to Facebook (I have to put this step because some people skip it)

Step 2 – Click Messenger in the left navigation

Step 3 – Next, click the Gear icon that is the settings for Messenger. It is located in the upper-left corner of Messenger

Step 4 – Click Settings

Step 5 – In the Settings box, uncheck the box next to “Desktop notifications enabled”.

Step 6 – Click Done.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Once you have unchecked that box, you will essentially turn off Facebook chat instant notifications and will no longer see those annoying pop-ups. instead, the Messenger notification icon in the top-right navigation will light up and display the number of unread messages you have waiting in Messenger.

I hope that helps alleviate some frustrations. Thanks to Lisa for sharing her frustration and I hope that the tip helped her, and you, get rid of those annoying Messenger pop-ups.

Have a frustration with the Facebook user experience or have a tip that might help someone else? Be sure to share it in a comment!

Side Note: Solutions To Other Frustrating Facebook Problems

Quite a few people have emailed me or reached out to me via comments/social about other frustrating issues with Facebook. If you’re experience any of the issues below, here are the links to the articles to help solve them:

As convenient as Facebook Messenger can be for private messages and phone calls, sometimes we could all use a break from the constant pings and notifications. It’s possible to check your Facebook messages without Messenger, but it’s really more of a hassle than it’s worth. Instead of deleting the app altogether, which may leave you scrambling to recover deleted messages on Facebook Messenger, it’s better to just sign off for a while and catch your breath. Here are two simple ways to turn off Facebook Messenger.

How to turn off Facebook Messenger

The most straightforward way to turn off Facebook Messenger is to do via the Facebook app.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Tap the menu icon on the right-hand side of the Facebook app and scroll down until you see App Settings. Once you are in your settings, scroll to the bottom and turn the Facebook chat toggle off.

Even though you are turning Facebook chat off on your mobile device, you will still receive messages, just without the continuous notifications.

How to mute conversations in Facebook Messenger

Sometimes group chats can just be too much, especially if they are filled with every one of your family members. The dread of receiving another ping about a topic you don’t care to read about can weigh you down, but you don’t want to leave the chat and offend anyone.

Luckily, you can mute conversations on Facebook Messenger so you won’t receive notifications until you open the app.

Tap the conversation you want to mute and press the information button in the top-right corner. Select mute.

How to log out out of Facebook Messenger

If you need more of a break, you can always log out of Facebook Messenger. Users who are active on the Messenger app have a small green circle that appears in the bottom-right corner of their bubble. Setting your profile to inactive will show people that you are not available on the app.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

At the bottom of the messages section in the app, tap the menu icon next to “Home.”

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Tap Active at the top of the menu. This will give you the option to turn chat off.

Even though you set yourself as “not active,” you will still receive messages, as well as the notification reminder on the app. If you want to avoid notifications and the option to receive messages on your mobile device, it’s best to delete the Messenger app or turn notifications off.

While many of Facebook’s tools are well received as they enhance the experience, one which is often complained about is the Marketplace. The Craigslist-like feature which offers a way to facilitate transactions between users can be a little overbearing with its alerts. However, you can change that.

Depending on your smartphone’s operating system, there are one or two ways in which you can manage these notifications. Both methods allow you either scale them down or stop them altogether, depending on useful the Marketplace is to you.

Method 1: Change Settings Within the App (iOS or Android)

For most users, start by tapping the hamburger icon (three lines) in the bottom-right corner (iPhone) or top-right corner (Android). From there, expand the “Settings & Privacy,” menu, then select “Settings” and choose “Notifications Settings” on the next page.

Now, select “Marketplace” to view the notifications settings for Marketplace. You can prevent notifications for being received by a certain device (such as text messages or push notifications on your phone), or you can disable all notifications by disabling “Allow Notifications on Facebook.” Either way, disable one or all the toggles, and you should no longer receive any more notifications.

Method 2: Use Notification Channels (Android)

On Android devices running Android 8.0 Oreo or newer, you can take advantage of Notification Channels. With this feature, you can manage different categories of notifications for specific apps by changing how they appear on your device and whether they appear at all.

To access the Notification Channels for Facebook, open Settings and select “Apps” or “Apps & Notifications.” Choose Facebook from the list of apps, then select “Notifications.” From here, you will see a list of the different categories of alerts created by the Facebook app.

When you locate Marketplace in this list, you have two options. You can select the text to customize how the announcement appears, with options such as stopping it from popping up on the screen or just turning off the alert sound. The second option is to select the toggle next to Marketplace to disable notifications altogether.

iOS 10 made substantial, battery draining, changes to the Messages app. The app was initially simple and built for no nonsense messaging. Now it has everything from stickers to confetti. The features added to the Messages app help it rival other messaging apps like Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp. They also take away from its simple interface. One very hyped feature added to Messages was predictive emoji. As you type, Messages suggests emoji that you can insert based on the previous word you typed. This isn’t just a Messages app feature. It’s an improvement to the Keyboard functionality in iOS 10. It is annoying. It’s fine to use when you’re texting but not when you’re typing a note or in a Skype meeting. The emoji takes up space and it can be construed as unprofessional. Here’s how you can turn off predictive emoji in iOS 10.

iOS 10 does not have a built-in Off switch for predictive emoji. If you want to turn off predictive emoji, you have to go with a work around. Here are two.

Turn Off Predictive Text

This obviously isn’t the greatest work around to the problem. Predictive text is useful while predictive emoji is not. If you feel you can type without predictive text, then you can stand to turn it off. To turn off predictive text, tap and hold on the globe icon and tap the ‘Predictive’ switch to turn it off.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Remove Emoji Keyboard

A better work around to turn off predictive emoji is to remove the emoji keyboard. If you remove the keyboard, iOS 10 will not show emoji suggestions. You can keep predictive text on and use it to its full benefits.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Open the Settings app and go to General>Keyboard. Swipe left on the emoji keyboard and tap ‘Delete’ to remove it. When you type, all three suggestions in the predictive text bar will be text. There will be no emoji.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Predictive emoji is a nice feature to have if it were limited to just texting apps. Unfortunately, this isn’t a feature specific to just messaging apps. The Notes app, for example, also supports predictive emoji. That said, it seems some apps can opt out of predictive emoji, or perhaps iOS is smart enough to know that certain apps don’t need this feature.

MS Word for iOS and Gmail for iOS are two apps where, even if you have the emoji keyboard enabled and predictive text turned on, you will not see predictive emoji. If you’re getting emoji suggestions in an app you’d rather not see them in, you can turn it off. The downside is that you end up turning off emoji for all apps.

Tired of the bleeps and bloops constantly coming from the Facebook app? Us too.

For reasons that are unclear to anyone outside of Facebook, the iOS and Android apps make a ton of noise. There’s a sound when you refresh your feed, when someone starts typing or when you get a new alert. And frankly, the sounds are annoying.

Thankfully, you can disable the in-app sounds in a matter of seconds.

Disable on iOS

On an iOS device, tap on the button with three lines in the bottom right corner of the app. Next, scroll down and tap on the dropdown labeled Settings & Privacy then select Settings. Scroll through the list of Settings until you find the Sounds option and tap it. Finally, slide the switch next to In-App Sound to the Off position.

Disable on Android

The process on an Android device is similar to iOS. Open Facebook and tap on the three-lined icon along the top of the screen. Scroll down until you find Settings & Privacy, select it, then tap on Settings. Next select Media and Contacts and then toggle Sounds in the app to the Off position.

Facebook is a social media platform which widely allows you to connect with your friends and family members seamlessly. In recent times, Facebook has improved a lot and at the same time started annoying users by sending unwanted notifications.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Those unwanted notifications include friend suggestions, group create suggestions, etc. Some people love those features, but most of them hate those notifications.

Previously, the ‘Suggested Friends’ feature uses to give suggestions of people we know or from our friend’s list. But lately, Facebook started sending suggestions for random people as well, which is underwhelming.

But why Facebook started sending recommendations for random people? The answer is, the social network giant added a new feature to both Android and iOS applications which track your smartphone’s location and pushes suggestions based on the nearby facebook users.

The good thing is users can turn off feature easily by following the simple steps for both Android and iOS.

Android Users

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

This is a temporary solution as Facebook doesn’t officially turn off this feature as they think it as a mandatory feature. Facebook doesn’t send these notifications when the location services are turned off on your mobile. So, just turn off your smartphone’s location. Also, to permanently get rid of these notifications, uninstall the Facebook app and start using Facebook in a mobile browser.

However, if you’re an Android Marshmallow user, you can separately turn off Facebook to access your location. You can do that by heading over to Settings > Apps > Facebook > Permissions > Location > Off. This makes sure that Facebook can’t access your location.

iOS Users

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

The same case applies for iOS users as well. Users who don’t want these unwanted notifications should turn off their mobile’s location. To do that: Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Facebook> Off. By performing this, your Facebook app can’t access your location.

Did you know you can sneak into the party without telling everyone?

With the world in lockdown, video chat apps like Houseparty have become hugely popular. But pandemic social isolation is a marathon, not a sprint, and what we could do without is Houseparty's constant notifications driving us all crazy by week three.

The app itself is pretty good — you can read more about what we thought here — but the default notification system is annoying. Notifications buzz your phone every time a Houseparty friend of yours merely opens the application. The app also alerts you every time someone in your phonebook installs the app, and of course there are messages each time your friends actually get together and invite you to the party.

Read More:

You only really need the latter, unless you really want to be told every single time every friend opens the app. Thankfully, there are settings menus in the app and your phone itself to get your Houseparty notifications under control.

Sneak into the house

First, a useful trick for iPhone users. You can 'sneak' into the app — in other words, open it without anyone receiving a notification — by long-pressing on the Houseparty app icon, then tap the 'Sneak into the House' button.

Sneaking into the app also works when you tap on an incoming Houseparty notification. That way, when you're told someone has opened the app, you can tap the notification to get in without alerting anyone else. It's a bit like a friend smuggling you into an actual party through the back door.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Houseparty 'sneak' tipGearBrain

Ghost everyone

This may sound a bit extreme, especially in a time when social interaction is at a premium, but it's not as drastic as it sounds. Ghosting is the phrase Houseparty uses in its own set of house rules, and means that friends who are ghosted will no longer receive those annoying 'in the house' notifications when you open the app.

To ghost your friends, open the app (or sneak in), then tap the face icon into the top-left corner, then tap Manage Notifications.

From here you can switch off 'Send Out My Notifications' to effectively ghost everyone, meaning no one will be told when you open the Houseparty app.

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Sneaking into the partyGearBrain

Alternatively, you can choose to ghost individual contacts, so only those who remain un-ghosted are the ones you are alerted when you open the app.

This page also lets you switch off 'Get My Friends' Notifications.' Toggle this off and you will no longer receive those 'in the house' alerts every time a friend opens the app.

With both of these switched off, you will still receive notifications when a contact calls you, invites you into a video chat, or sends the 'hi' notification, which we think is a good compromise.

Restricting iOS notifications

How to turn off facebook messenger’s annoying m suggestions

Notifications for all apps can be adjusted in the Settings appGearBrain

Of course, you can also limit notifications at a system level by going into your phone's settings menu. For iPhone users, this means opening the Settings app, then tapping on Notifications, then Houseparty.

Here you can turn notifications for the app off entirely (meaning you won't know when a friend invites you to a party), or change how they look. You can have them appear on the lock screen or not, appear in the Notification Center or not, and appear as a drop-down banner at the top of the screen, or not.

You could turn all of these off, but leave Badges open, where the notification number appears in a red circle on the Houseparty app icon.

Restricting Android notifications

The same system is in place on Android too. Go into the settings app, then tap on Apps & Notifications, and tap on Houseparty. From here you can fine-tune how you want Houseparty's notifications to appear on your phone.
