Now that it has extension support, Microsoft Edge is becoming a more and more viable browser. One feature people seem to either love or hate is the pop-up preview you get when you hover over a tab. There’s no built-in setting that lets you turn tab previews off, but you can do it with a simple Registry hack.

Turn Off Tab Previews by Editing the Registry Manually

To turn off tab previews in Edge, you just need to make an adjustment to one setting in the Windows Registry.

Standard warning: Registry Editor is a powerful tool and misusing it can render your system unstable or even inoperable. This is a pretty simple hack and as long as you stick to the instructions, you shouldn’t have any problems. That said, if you’ve never worked with it before, consider reading about how to use the Registry Editor before you get started. And definitely back up the Registry (and your computer!) before making changes.

Open the Registry Editor by hitting Start and typing “regedit.” Press Enter to open Registry Editor and give it permission to make changes to your PC.

In the Registry Editor, use the left sidebar to navigate to the following key:

Next, you’re going to create and name a new value inside the TabbedBrowsing key. Right-click the TabbedBrowsing folder and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name the new value TabPeekEnabled and then double-click the value to open its properties window.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

In the value’s properties window, enter 0 in the “Value data” box and then click OK.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

Tab previews should now be disabled in Microsoft Edge, though if you had the browser open while doing this you’ll need to exit and restart Edge. If you ever want to turn tab previews back on, just return to the TabbedBrowsing key and set the TabPeekEnabled value to 1.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

If you don’t feel like diving into the Registry yourself, we’ve created some a couple of registry hacks you can use. The “Turn Off Tab Previews in Edge” hack creates the TabPeekEnabled value and sets it to 0. The “Turn On Tab Previews in Edge (Default)” hack sets the TabPeekEnabled value to 1, its default setting. Both hacks are included in the following ZIP file. Double-click the one you want to use and click through the prompts. When you’ve applied the hack you want, the changes will take place immediately. If you had Microsoft Edge open when you applied the hack, you’ll have to exit and restart it.

These hacks are really just the TabbedBrowsing key, stripped down to the TabPeekEnabled value we talked about in the previous section and then exported to a .REG file. Running either of the enable sets that value to the appropriate number. And if you enjoy fiddling with the Registry, it’s worth taking the time to learn how to make your own Registry hacks.

Love them or hate them, tab previews are not so hard to turn off and on in Microsoft Edge if you’re willing to make a mild Registry edit. And it super easy to toggle the setting if you use our one-click hacks.

With a small tweak to the Windows Registry, you can get rid of Edge’s tab previews.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge Enlarge Image

Microsoft Edge’s tab previews can be useful. They offer a thumbnail glimpse of the current page when you mouse over a tab. If you are reading this blog post, however, you may find them annoying, especially when the tab preview for the left-most tab obfuscates Edge’s forward and back buttons.

Thankfully, there is a way to disable tab previews for Microsoft Edge. You will need to dip your toes into Windows Registry waters but it’s a simple tweak.

To get started, click the Start button and type regedit, hit enter to open the Registry Editor, and give it permission to make changes.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge Enlarge Image

In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following folder:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > Classes > Local Settings > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > AppContainer > Storage > microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe > MicrosoftEdge > TabbedBrowsing

You can navigate through the folder hierarchy in the left panel, but a faster way is use the Edit menu at the top. Go to Edit > Find and for Find What, enter TabbedBrowsing to jump straight to that folder.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge Enlarge Image

Next, right-click on the TabbedBrowsing folder and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. A new item will appear in the right panel with a temporary name of New Value #1. Rename it TabPeekEnabled.

After renaming it, double-click the TabPeekEnabled item and make sure for Value data, that 0 is listed. Click the OK button and you’re done.

The tab preview feature in Microsoft Edge displays a thumbnail glance of an open tab on mouse-over. Its usefulness is questionable, but to each their own. Tab previews have a tendency to get in the way. The thumbnail preview can obstruct features like the bookmarks bar, the address bar, and the forward, back and refresh buttons. Although no standard setting exists to disable tab previews in Microsoft Edge, it is still possible. Doing so requires a foray into the Windows registry.

Edit the Windows Registry

To access the Windows 10 registry, type regedit into the Cortana search box, and click regedit Run command under Best match.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

In Registry Editor, click Edit in the file menu, and select Find.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

In the Find what field, input TabbedBrowsing as one word, then click the Find Next button.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

Right-click on TabbedBrowsing, click New, then choose DWORD (32-bit) Value.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

A new DWORD value called New Value #1 will display under the Name column. Right-click on New Value #1, and rename it to TabPeekEnabled as all one word.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

Right-click on TabPeekEnabled, and choose Modify from the right-click menu. In the Edit dialog, locate the Value data field. The default value is 0 (zero) which means the tab preview feature is disabled. Click OK in the Edit dialog.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

Relaunch Microsoft Edge, and tab previews will no longer display. When the longing for tab previews is more than you can bear, enabling it is easily accomplished. Navigate back to TabbedBrowsing, and modify TabPeekEnabled to change value data to 1 (one). You can also (carefully!) delete the TabPeekEnabled DWORD value to undo all of your hard work to re-enable tab previews. Once modified or deleted, relaunch Microsoft Edge to find tab previews present once again. Watch our video tutorial to see just how easy it is.

On the Creators Update, Windows 10 ships a faster, safer, and vastly improved version of Microsoft Edge. While you won’t be seeing major changes in the look and feel, the browser includes several improvements. You’ll find faster page load, quicker checkout process buying goods online, as well as the ability to read e-books you get from the Store, support for 3D on the web, and a lot more.

Among all the new improvements, perhaps one of the best new addition to Microsoft Edge are the new tools to manage tabs, which help you stay organized and reduce clutter when working with multiple web pages.

Microsoft Edge displays preview thumbnails of websites or services open in tabs in the web browser when you hover the mouse over the tab space.

While that may be useful at times, for instance when multiple pages of a site are open that all use the same title, it may be distracting at other times.

When you hover over a tab a small thumbnail preview is displayed by Edge. This preview shows a live image of the site or service.

If you have no use for tab previews in Microsoft Edge, you may want to consider disabling the feature. The browser itself ships with no options to disable previews however.

Note: The option to turn off tab previews in Edge has been removed by Microsoft. There is currently no option to disable these previews in the web browser.

While Microsoft Edge still has a few miles to go to catch up with the competition, Microsoft has done great work on bringing new features, improvements, and making the web browser more power efficient.

Among all the features in the default web browser for Windows 10, you’ll also find tab preview. This feature allows the browser to show a small thumbnail (very similar to the thumbnail for apps in the taskbar) that gives you a peek as you hover the mouse over open tabs without the need to move away from your current page.

This little feature can be useful for some, but it can also be distracting for many users, as it can get in the way of elements of the web browser. Fortunately, there is an easy way to disable preview for tabs on Microsoft Edge by modifying the registry.

In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to disable tab preview on Microsoft Edge.

How to disable tab preview on Microsoft Edge

  1. Close Microsoft Edge.
  2. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
  3. Type regedit, and click OK to open the Windows registry.

After months of waiting through the offseason, the NFL is finally back this week. With these Windows 10 apps, you won’t miss a snap of the NFL action.

Summary : Alt + Tab allows users to switch between open windows running and programs quickly. This function is convenient in some way, but many users dislike it, for it messes up the Alt + Tab screen. So today in how-to this article, we will guide you on how to prevent edge tabs from appearing in Alt + Tab.

Table of Contents

What is Alt + Tab?

Alt + Tab, the so-call Task Switcher, is a keyboard shortcut in Microsoft Windows to switch between open applications without moving the mouse.

In Windows 10, version 2009, all the Microsoft Edge tabs are displayed in the Alt + Tab. That is, in addition to the open File Explorer windows and the running program, web pages or tabs opening in the Edge browser will now appear in Alt-Tab.

That seems convenient. However, if you usually or get used to frequently open a large number of tabs, adding browser tabs to the Alt + Tab switching may be annoying. When you open not only many browser tabs, but also multiple applications, It may take a while for Alt + Tab to pass through them.

Luckily it is possible to hide or turn off this function so that the Alt + Tab screen will only display the Edge window, not the open tabs.

How to Turn Off Edge Tabs in Alt + Tab?

  1. Click on the “Start” button, and then click on the “gear” icon to open the “Settings”. Or you can also press Win + I simultaneously to open it.
  2. Click System, and then navigate to the Multitasking.
  3. Then you can see the “Pressing Alt + Tab shows” under the “Alt + Tab” section.
  4. Select the “Open windows only” to hide all Edges tabs.
  5. If you’d like to see a few Edge tabs that will not clutter Alt + Tab, there are two options above the “Pressing Alt + Tab shows” option that you can choose.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

Tip: If the Alt + Tab section is not displayed, it may be because you are running version 2004 or an earlier version of Windows 10. You must run version 2009 to see the Alt + Tab section.

Bottom Line

As a keyboard shortcut, Alt + Tab is vital for computer users. Though Edge tabs showing up Alt + Tab is annoying, users can choose whether to keep this feature according to their needs. If you are thinking about disabling this function, this page is the right place.

If you follow Edge development, you may remember that the browser supports tab thumbnail previews. The feature was hidden behind a flag and not activated in the stable release of Edge, but now it is enabled by default in the Dev version of the browser.

The feature is named ‘Tab Hover Cards Preview’ , and it was introduced in Google Chrome 78. Since browsers share the common base of the Chromium project, they have a lot of similar features. Tab thumbnail previews is one of them.

How to turn off tab previews in microsoft edge

This behavior is controlled by the edge://flags/#tab-hover-cards flag. However, in the Dev version of Microsoft Edge tab thumbnail previews are now enabled by default. The feature supports both the horizontal and vertical tab layouts. When you hover over a tab in Microsoft Edge, the browser shows a thumbnail preview of the tab under the mouse pointer.

It also worth mentioning that the classic ‘legacy’ Edge app tab has the same thumbnail previews option. It is enabled by default, but can be disabled on demand.

So Microsoft is about to bring all the features of Edge legacy to its successor. It is unlikely that the company will add an option to the browser settings to disable or enable the previews. But you can use the mentioned edge://flags/#tab-hover-cards option to turn on or off the tab previews according to your preferences.
