How to turn off the led on your sonos player

Sonos is great because you can set up and control speakers from any room in your dwelling. If you like to wake up to or fall asleep to music, then they’re especially well suited to have in your bedroom.

Once you get your Sonos players set up and configured on all your devices, then it doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re using, because you can control them with just about any device. This is especially nice when you’re laying in bed relaxing, or trying to drift off to sleep. The Sonos player app can even set alarms (so you can wake up to your music) and sleep timers (so you can fall asleep to your music). We’ll demonstrate how to do both in this guide.

How to Set Sleep Timers in the Sonos Desktop App

You can set alarms on the mobile app, but not sleep timers. The desktop app allows you to create both. With that in mind, let’s first discuss sleep timers. On the desktop app, you will see the timers and alarms options in the bottom-right area.

How to turn off the led on your sonos player

The timers are pretty simple to work out. Once you have your music selections queued up, whether it’s a playlist or your favorite Pandora station, you can click on “Sleep Timer” and select the duration before the Sonos app shuts your music off.

How to Set an Alarm in the Sonos Mobile App

Setting your Sonos player to wake you up in the morning or after a nap requires just a tad more configuration. Let’s demonstrate how to do do it on a the mobile version.

First, tap on the three lines in the upper-left corner, then tap on “Alarms” near the bottom of the pane.

How to turn off the led on your sonos player

Once you’ve added alarms, they will show up on the next screen. Since we don’t have any yet, this screen is blank. Tap “New Alarm” at the bottom to proceed to the next screen.

How to turn off the led on your sonos player

Now, on the New Alarm screen, you can set your alarm’s time, the room where it will occur, frequency and volume.

How to turn off the led on your sonos player

When you tap “Music”, you can choose between the Sonos Chime, your Sonos Playlists, imported playlists, streaming services, or radio stations.

How to turn off the led on your sonos player

Notice on that New Alarm screen there’s an Advanced feature. Here you’ll find options to set the duration of the alarm, and you can include grouped rooms.

How to Set an Alarm in the Sonos Desktop App

Just like with sleep timers, click the Alarm option in the bottom-right corner of the desktop app to set an alarm.

How to turn off the led on your sonos player

The setting here are fairly easy to figure out, you can add or delete alarms with the + and – buttons, or click “Edit” to edit an existing alarm. Check the box next to your alarms on the right to turn them on or off.

How to turn off the led on your sonos player

If you edit (or create) an alarm, you’ll find the same options as with the mobile version, except there won’t be an Advanced button. Instead, everything will be grouped on the same settings panel.

How to turn off the led on your sonos player

After creating and saving the alarm, you’ll see it appear on the Alarms screen of your mobile app. If you ever tap on an alarm, you can edit or delete it. If you’re happy, then simply tap “Done”.

How to turn off the led on your sonos player

There you have it. Whether you go to sleep listening to music or like to wake up to it, you can use your Sonos player in any room using your favorite playlists, streaming services, or radio stations. It’s a great little alternative to the same old alarm clock or using your phone and its alarm tones. Just make sure you turn off the white LED light so it doesn’t bother you in your darkened room.

Sonos is a name that goes around in the tech space a lot.

Having one Sonos speaker begs for you to have another in a separate room. The way they have perfected the art of multi-room audio and built a thriving ecosystem is very impressive. Beyond that, they have partnered with several music services to listen to music via their devices so much easier. These include Spotify, YouTube Music, Tidal, SoundCloud, and over 100 more.

That ridiculous catalog of streaming platforms paired with seamless multi-room audio enjoyment is completed by the simple fact that Sonos speakers sound so so good.

However, with all this complexity associated with them, particularly regarding the ecosystem that can be built around them, sometimes one or two speakers in your set-up no longer act in sync with the others. This can be worrying, but you can easily reset Sonos systems to get them back to proper function.

This article is all about how to reset Sonos speaker without much of a headache. This article will guide you through the proper means.

Do you have a particular question about resetting Sonos speaker? Then use the table of contents below to jump to the most relevant section. And you can always go back by clicking on the black arrow in the right bottom corner of the page. Also, please note that some of the links in this article may be affiliate links. For more details, check the Disclosure section at the bottom of the page.

Here's what we'll cover:

Why Does Sonos Speaker Need Reset?

So, you must be curious. This company sells six million dollars worth of speakers every year, so it’s not uncommon to have one! Before we get into how to reset Sonos speakers, you may want to know the reasons that call for this in the first place.

It could be because you’re finally moving house and it’s going to find itself connected to a new Wi-Fi system. Or, perhaps, you’re going on a journey with something a bit more portable. Or you’re borrowing it from a friend to enjoy for some time. If you want to sell it, too, you’ll need to pull a Sonos factory reset.

If this happens, you should get the speakers to reset to make things easiest for those looking to purchase. After all, nobody wants to buy a device that they can’t even connect to. Doing this will help with that. It will also help if you’re doing a Sonos reset simply to fix a speaker that isn’t working as it should be.

What Does Sonos Reset Do?

Before you attempt to reset your Sonos speaker, you should know that it is different from a reboot. If you want to reboot, simply follow the steps here.

A reset will completely wipe your Sonos device. Any registration info, music services you have integrated, and content on My Sonos will be deleted. Just think of it as returning it to factory settings.

I don’t think (without looking at their FAQ, which I suppose I should do at some point) that the LED means anything more than “it’s on and connected to wifi”. On all of my speakers, I’ve turned that off, using the controller, looking under each “room” setting, so that I don’t have errant LEDs lighting up my house. I try to do the same on everything else. But I don’t think there’s a state change on the LED for “active” or “inactive”, just “connected” or “not connected”.

And no, you probably shouldn’t be hearing hissing if it’s been “off” (no music/TV playing) for at least 5 minutes. If you’re still getting that hiss, you may want to run a diagnostic, and post the number here, so that one of the Sonos Reps can look into it further. Neither of my Playbars hiss at all.

Another test might be disconnecting the TOSLink/optical connection to your TV for 10 minutes, and see if the hissing goes away. If it does, that would mean that there’s some signal coming from the TV that’s keeping the Playbar active. Which seems odd. But it would be something that’s easy to test, and eliminate at least one thing.

Along those lines, I’d also make sure that your TV is running the latest firmware, if such a thing is possible. About every other month, I take a look and see if Vizio has sent out an update. I’ve got it set to automatically update, but I never trust software 🙂

Thanks Airgetlam. Appreciate the detailed responses.

Today is a new day and the Playbar does stop hissing after c5min as you have described. Not sure why it didn’t yesterday. Perhaps it had detected an active Sonos app on another device in the home (eg my iPad).

Thanks Airgetlam. Appreciate the detailed responses.

Today is a new day and the Playbar does stop hissing after c5min as you have described. Not sure why it didn’t yesterday. Perhaps it had detected an active Sonos app on another device in the home (eg my iPad).

Nothing to do with “Active” Sonos apps or controller.

The Playbar is only going to respond to an active signal via the Optical cable so make sure that the source of that is switched off OR if you have told the Playbar to play an alternate source but then that would be Radio, music or something like that – It would either be playing or NOT playing.

The Playbar should not be making any noise when it isn’t playing audio so you will need to decide if you have just convinced yourself of the presence of a hum/buzz when there isn’t one or it really is there!

Be assured I have not convinced myself of anything. The hissing was most evident yesterday and coiuld be heard with an ear right at the Playbar. It’s the sound you can hear immediately after turning your TV (or other source) off before it goes dormant. That hiss was on for more than 4 hours yesterday until I gave up and switched it off at the power. The only thing I had running continuously yesterday was the app. Perhaps it was anticipating me to play music from my library. When I switched the bar back on today, the hissing ceased after 5 or so minutes. Just as I have described. There were no Hallucinations from my side 🙂

How to turn off the led on your sonos player+21

I’m quite sure you’re hearing something. As a matter of fact I have a hissing/buzzing/droning in my ears right now – I’m currently in my office place of work which is quite quiet. The “noise” I’m hearing is real but it’s in my head so nobody else can hear it.

I meant no sleight just pointing out that when you get to this sort of thing it’s very much “in the eye (ear) of the beholder (listener)”.

And really what I was saying is that if there is a long lived hiss and anything beyond a few seconds after the input to the Playbar is stopped would be unexpected to say the least and may be indicative of a fault with the Playbar.

And it’s not anticipating anything – It’s just a dumb bit of electronics – Playbar receive optical signal, Playbar make noise. Playbar receive stream via Wi-Fi or Sonos Net, Playbar make noise. Playbar receive nothing, Playbar no make sound.

You can turn on/off the light without affecting the speaker and sound. You can play or pause the sound with the built-in controls on the foot of the table lamp. Welcome to Product Support, a column devoted to helping you get the most out of the gadgets and software you already use.

If you own more than one Sonos speaker and you’ve grouped them together – whether that consists of Play:1s, Ones, Play:5s, Beams, the new Symfonisk speakers, or a combination of any of them – you might’ve noticed that, on occasion, one of the speakers will stop playing with the rest. As a Sonos owner myself, I’ve noticed this happening to my various Play:1s when grouped with a One; I’ll ask Alexa to play music and all of my speakers save for a Play:1 will play in unison.

The bedrock of a surround-sound home theater.

Normally, the solution to regrouping your Sonos speakers is to go into the Sonos app, select the “Group” button and then select the specific speaker that’s not playing. It’s easy, if a little annoying.

However, something that you might not have known – I didn’t until just a few weeks ago – is that there’s a quick fix for regrouping a rogue Sonos speaker. And it doesn’t involve touching your smartphone or computer. Instead, all you need to do is go over to the speaker that’s not playing, press and hold down the Play/Pause button for three seconds, it’ll automatically regroup with the other speakers and play the same music. As long as the speakers are all connected to the same Wi-Fi network, this will work.

Another good use of this “hack” is if you have a Beam, Playbar or Playbase (any soundbar connected to your TV), along with another Sonos speaker in a different room. For instance, I gifted my mom a Sonos Beam last Christmas and one of her favorite things to do is listening to the Mets game on TV while making dinner. The problem is that her Sonos Beam is in the TV room and the Play:1 is in the kitchen, and the two often get ungrouped because she’s always turning on and off the TV (and thus the soundbar). But by holding down the Play/Pause button on her Play:1, it automatically syncs with her Sonos Beam (as long as the TV is on) and she can hear the Mets game.
