After updating to the new iOS, I have tried using both Automatic and When Connected to Bluetooth, and neither works to turn on the Do Not Disturb While Driving feature. The only way it is working for me is when I turn it on manually. Help! I’ve tested it several times, both with Automatic or Bluetooth, both short trips and long trips and the only way it works is if I turn it on manually.

There is a lot you have not told us, such as your iPhone model, country, and whether your car supports CarPlay.

This article explains. Read it thoroughly.

iPhone 6S, car does not support AirPlay but phone can connect to car stereo via Bluetooth. United States. CarPlay should not matter if using Automa

I have already read the article and followed directions but it will only work if turning on man

The article I attached contradicts this.

I have the same problem.

Car does not support Car Play, but iPhone does connect via Bluetooth.

Sep 24, 2017 2:05 PM

I have tried using 2 different Apple Chat support specialists, and was on the phone with Apple for 3 hours, with an “expert” technician and they tried restoring my phone 3 times hoping it would help but it failed the restore all 3 times, probably due to Incompatibility issues with my computer. That has nothing to do with do not disturb while driving though, for some reason it simply will not work with my phone unless I turn it on manually. Disappointing, but I guess I’m out of luck unless they fix it in an update, but I doubt it because they said they haven’t seen any issues with the feature. Maybe I need an Android next time 🙁

Sep 24, 2017 6:28 PM

Just exactly where in the article does it contradict anything? I read it several times and it has no mention about needing CarPlay to work. It says if set to Automatic it automatically detects motion and turns on. But will only work for me if manual. You may be talking about the turning on via Bluetooth setting. I’m talking about Automatic.

Maybe you didn’t see the contradiction because I posted it as a screen shot.

Here it is once again, this time transcribed as a quote from the article:

“If your supports CarPlay and you connect your iPhone, Do Not Disturb while driving is not automatically activated.”

Sep 24, 2017 9:25 PM

The asterix (*) only refers to the Bluetooth Connection, not when set to “automatically”.

“Automatically” should work everytime when you are moving (train, bike, plane etc.) by detecting driving motion.

By the way, it neither works for me. iPhone was set as new without backup.

Sep 25, 2017 12:38 AM

That comment just means that it is initially set to Manual, and you have to go into your settings and change it from Manual to Automatic., which I have done. Your quote does not mean that it won’t work when set to Automatic. CarPlay has nothing to do with the feature. Your GPS in your phone is supposed to automatically detect movement while driving which is supposed to turn on the feature, unless you have it set to manually turn on. I know someone else with the same model iPhone S me, (6S), and they do not have a car that supports CarPlay, nor do they have a car stereo that supports CarPlay or even Bluetooth, but the feature works for them. They don’t even have to turn it on, it comes on automatically. The first time they got Started driving after updating their iOS, they got a prompt asking if they wanted to use the feature. I never got that prompt.

How to turn on “do not disturb while driving” in apple carplay

CarPlay allows for hands-free input with voice controls powered by Siri, so in essence, you can perform specific tasks and run various operations without having to touch the head unit.

But at the end of the day, CarPlay is supposed to allow us to drive safely, and this is why the experience has been specifically optimized for someone who needs to be entirely focused on the road.

In other words, interacting with the mobile device isn’t by any means recommended, and to prevent any distraction in the car, CarPlay automatically puts notifications to silent. To do this, the application turns to a feature called Do Not Disturb While Driving, which is bundled with every iPhone out there.

What is Do Not Disturb While Driving

Just like its name suggests, this is a feature that works similarly to the standard do not disturb system, only that it’s specifically optimized for the driving experience.

Theoretically, all the notifications and messages that you receive are set to mute, which means you won’t be distracted by them and encouraged to look at the phone.

On the other hand, thanks to CarPlay, the notifications show up on the head unit, so the typical iPhone behavior is mirrored on the head unit. This works for both first- and third-party apps, and pretty much any notification you receive on CarPlay shows up on the display in the car too.

Do Not Disturb While Driving
is enabled automatically when you launch CarPlay, but you can also configure it to work more efficiently according to your preferences.

How to turn on “do not disturb while driving” in apple carplay

How to configure Do Not Disturb While Driving
As I said, Do Not Disturb While Driving is enabled automatically on CarPlay launch, but you can still configure several important features.

By default, the feature shows a notification on the lock screen to let you know it’s active, and when someone sends you a message, it can automatically reply with a pre-defined message. To change who receives the message, you need to go to Settings > Do Not Disturb > Auto-Reply To and choose between No One to disable this feature completely, Recents, Favorites, and All Contacts.

The same menu also allows you to change the message you want to use for the auto-reply.

If you’re not using CarPlay, but you still run Do Not Disturb While Driving in the car, you can configure it to allow some calls based on certain rules. For example, you can allow a call to go through if it’s made by a contact or if it’s a second call from the same person within the last three minutes.

Do Not Disturb While Driving helps you stay focused on the road. When you turn it on, text messages and other notifications are silenced or limited. You can ask Siri to read replies to you, so you don’t have to look at your iPhone. Incoming calls are allowed only when iPhone is connected to CarPlay—a car Bluetooth system—or a hands-free accessory, or when you use Do Not Disturb settings to allow some calls,” Apple explains.

By default, if you’re running CarPlay, all calls are allowed to go through, only that they show up on the head unit instead of the iPhone.

These features are available on any iPhone running iOS 13 and later, which means they can be used on the iPhone 6s and newer, including the recently-released iPhone 12.

Driving while using your phone is an obvious no-no, but sometimes we do it anyway. This can cause unwanted distractions, especially if you’re experiencing a surge of messages or emails from other people, and that split second it takes for you to look down or at your phone could sometimes lead to disastrous consequences, leading to injury or maybe loss of life in the event of an accident.

However, one of the safety features Apple has introduced to iOS is the ability to enable a feature called “Do not disturb while driving”. As its name suggests, this is a feature that basically detects when you’re driving and can put your phone in DND mode that mutes all incoming notifications until you’ve come to a stop.

It’s an incredibly useful feature to have and if you want to reduce the number of distractions you have while driving, or maybe you want to turn it on for your child while they drive, here’s how you can do it.

How To Enable DND While Driving On iPhone

  1. Launch the Settings app
  2. Tap on Do Not Disturb
  3. Scroll down and tap on “Do Not Disturb While Driving
  4. You now have the option to either turn the feature on automatically, which is based on motion detection; or when it connects to your car’s Bluetooth system (or CarPlay); or manually, in which you’ll have to remember to turn it on when you’re in the car

Do Not Disturb While Driving is similar to the DND feature on iOS. Notifications will be muted. It will also be capable of sending the person who texted you an automated reply to let them know that you’re driving. This can be customized according to your own liking. Also, phone calls are silenced and will only be allowed if it’s connected to either your car’s Bluetooth or a hands-free kit.

Users can also get Siri to read out replies so that you won’t have to reach for your phone or to look at it.

With iOS 15, the Driving Focus helps you stay focused on the road. When you turn it on, text messages and other notifications are silenced or limited.

When you have the Driving Focus set up, you can ask Siri to read replies to you, so you don’t have to look at your iPhone. Incoming calls are allowed only when iPhone is connected to CarPlay, a car Bluetooth system, or a hands-free accessory.
