Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) version 3.18 and later includes the msupdate command-line tool. The msupdate tool can be used to start the update process for Microsoft applications produced for Mac, such as Office. The tool is primarily designed to give IT administrators more precise control over when updates are applied. You can download the latest version of MAU from this link.

msupdate works by sending Apple Events to the MAU daemon. On macOS 10.14 Mojave and later, you may see a privacy prompt when running msupdate for the first time. If you are using an enterprise management tool such as Jamf Pro, you should deploy a Privacy Preferences Policy Control (PPPC) payload to pre-approve access. Samples of such a payload can be downloaded from GitHub.

Use the following steps to start using the tool:

  1. Open the Terminal application
  2. Enter cd /Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft\ AutoUpdate.app/Contents/MacOS
  3. Run ./msupdate –help

The following options are displayed:

Examples of how to use msupdate

  • Display the current configuration parameters for MAU: ./msupdate –config
  • Display the current configuration parameters in machine-readable format: ./msupdate –config –format plist
  • List all available updates: ./msupdate –list
  • Download and install all available updates: ./msupdate –install
  • Download and install the latest updates for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint: ./msupdate –install –apps MSWD2019 XCEL2019 PPT32019
  • Download and install a version-specific update for Outlook: ./msupdate –install –apps OPIM2019 –version 16.17.180090901
  • Download and install latest available updates for Excel, wait for 180 seconds (3 minutes) before closing Excel, and display “Excel will close in 3 minutes to install updates.” on macOS banner notification to notify user: ./msupdate –install –apps XCEL2019 -t 180 -m “Excel will close in 3 minutes to install updates.”

To use the -t and -m modifiers, you must be using Microsoft AutoUpdate 4.24 or later.

Application identifiers

The following table lists the Microsoft applications for Mac supported by MAU. The identifier is used when specifying the –apps parameter. When specifying multiple applications on the command-line, separate identifiers with a space.

Application Identifier
Word MSWD2019
Excel XCEL2019
PowerPoint PPT32019
Outlook OPIM2019
OneNote ONMC2019
MAU MSau04
OneDrive ONDR18
Teams TEAM01
Skype for Business MSFB16
Remote Desktop MSRD10
Intune Company Portal IMCP01
Defender ATP WDAV00
Edge Canary EDCN01
Edge Dev EDDV01
Edge Beta EDBT01
Edge Stable EDGE01
  • The identifiers for the Office apps, such as Word and Outlook, can be used for Office for Mac (from an Office 365 or Microsoft 365 subscription plan) or for Office 2019 for Mac (either a retail or a volume licensed version).
  • If an update is pending for MAU itself, that update must be applied before any applications can be updated.
  • Identifiers are not case-sensitive when run interactively from the command-line, but use the character casing in the table when running from a management tool such as Jamf Pro.
  • Microsoft Teams might use MAU to provide updates in some scenarios, such as if the Teams updater fails. But, you can’t use msupdate to have MAU manage updates for Teams, because Teams doesn’t provide admins the ability to deploy and manage updates. Instead, Teams is updated automatically approximately every two weeks with new features and quality updates. For more information, see Teams update process.

This article covers frequently asked questions about the availability of Office from the Mac App Store, and the differences between downloading Office apps directly from Microsoft.

Starting in January 2019, the following Office applications are available for download from the Mac App Store: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote*, and OneDrive*.

* These apps were also available from the Mac App Store in previous years.

What version of Office is available from the Mac App Store?

The Office apps available from the Mac App Store provide the very latest version of Office on the Mac. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook require a Microsoft 365 subscription to activate. OneNote and OneDrive do not require a Microsoft 365 subscription, but some premium features may require a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Is this the same as Office 2019?

No. Office 2019 is the one-time purchase, non-subscription product (also known as perpetual). A Microsoft 365 subscription provides always up-to-date versions of Office apps and access to additional premium features and services. The apps available in the Mac App Store are not compatible with Office 2019 licenses.

I currently own Office 2016 for Mac and want to upgrade my version of Office. Should I download Office from the Mac App Store?

If you own the older perpetual release of Office, you can download the new version of the apps from the Mac App Store, and purchase a new Microsoft 365 subscription using the in-app purchase option. In-app purchase offers include Microsoft 365 Family, and Microsoft 365 Personal. Your license from the perpetual release of Office will not work with the app versions from the App Store. Click here to learn about Microsoft 365 subscriptions and pricing.

I already have a Microsoft 365 subscription, and the Office apps are already installed on my Mac. Do I need to do anything?

No. It’s likely that you installed Office directly from Microsoft. The Microsoft AutoUpdate app will keep your existing apps up-to-date. The apps in the Mac App Store do not provide functionality beyond what you have today.

If I download Office from the Mac App Store, do I still use Microsoft AutoUpdate to get updates?

Microsoft AutoUpdate is only used to get updates for apps that you download directly from Microsoft. If you download Office from the Mac App Store, then the App Store will provide you with future updates of Office. You may have other Microsoft apps installed on your Mac, and AutoUpdate will continue providing updates just for those apps.

Can I have multiple versions and builds of Office installed on my Mac?

No. Microsoft 365, Office 2019, and Office 2016 use the same application and file names. To see which version of Office you have installed on your Mac, open one of the apps, and look at the License text in the About dialog.

Can I get Office Insider builds from the Mac App Store?

No. The Office apps in the Mac App Store are production releases. Insider builds must be downloaded directly from Microsoft.

How do I cancel my Microsoft 365 free trial that I purchased through the Mac App Store?

To cancel your Microsoft 365 free trial that you purchased through the Mac or iOS App Store, follow the instructions on this page: View, change, or cancel your subscriptions.

This link redirects to the App Store, so please open this link on a Mac, iPad or iPhone.

There are four ways that admins typically apply updates for Microsoft 365 Apps:

Automatically from the internet

Using Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager

Automatically from an on-premises location

By installing an updated version of Microsoft 365 Apps

Which way is right for your organization depends on how much administrative effort you want to expend and how much control that you want to have over the update process.

In most cases, you use the Office Deployment Tool or Group Policy to configure the appropriate update settings.

Because individual updates aren’t available for Microsoft 365 Apps, you can’t use Windows Update or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to download and apply individual updates to Microsoft 365 Apps.

Apply updates automatically from the internet to Microsoft 365 Apps

This is the default setting for Microsoft 365 Apps. For example, if your users install Microsoft 365 Apps themselves from the Office 365 portal, Microsoft 365 Apps is configured to get updates automatically from the internet. No additional user or administrative configuration is needed.

Even if you use the Office Deployment Tool to deploy Microsoft 365 Apps to your users, you can configure updates to be applied automatically from the internet.

This option might be a good choice for your organization if you have users who travel or work remotely and don’t connect to the corporate network regularly. It’s also the choice that requires the least amount of administrative effort. But, this option gives you the least amount of control over the update process.

Using Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager

Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager has the ability to manage updates to Microsoft 365 Apps by using the Software Update management workflow. You can use Configuration Manager to update Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, Microsoft 365 Apps for business, and the subscription versions of the Project and Visio desktop apps. This gives you full control over the update deployment process, e.g. when which devices will receive a specific update. Please refer to Manage updates to Microsoft 365 Apps with Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager for an in-depth description.

Apply updates automatically from an on-premises location to Microsoft 365 Apps

You can configure Microsoft 365 Apps to get updates automatically from a location on your network, such as a network share. You can configure the update location by using the Office Deployment Tool or Group Policy.

This is a good option if you want more control over the version of Microsoft 365 Apps that users have installed. For example, even if the June version of Microsoft 365 Apps is available, you might want your users to continue using the May version. You might want to do this because you want to test to make sure that your line-of-business applications work with the June version.

You’ll have to use the Office Deployment Tool to download updated versions of Microsoft 365 Apps from the internet to your local network. After it’s downloaded, you can place the updated version on a network share that is close to the users.

Apply updates by installing an updated version of Microsoft 365 Apps

Instead of using automatic updates, you can deploy an updated version of Microsoft 365 Apps to your users by using the Office Deployment Tool. This option re-installs Microsoft 365 Apps. You can use the Office Deployment Tool together with software distribution tools, such as Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager or Microsoft Intune.

This option is useful if you want to control which version of Microsoft 365 Apps users have, and you want to control which users get updated and when they get updated. This option provides the most control, but also requires the most administrative effort and has a high impact on user downtime and network load.

If you decide to use this option, you’ll disable automatic updates. You can control that setting by using either the Office Deployment Tool or Group Policy.
