How to use and configure android’s “battery saver” mode

In today’s day and age, our smartphones continue to get slimmer and slimmer, but battery technology is lagging behind just a little bit. This means that manufacturers are forced to squeeze smaller batteries into devices.

With Android Marshmallow, Google introduced a new feature called “Battery Saver”, which is a feature embedded into the OS to help keep your device going for as long as you are. This feature has stuck around, and other manufacturers have implemented their own battery saver settings to fit each device’s needs.

While there are some more extreme methods for saving battery life on your devices, such as a using black wallpaper, disabling certain features, and others, Battery Saver mode has proven to be quite useful. The steps below are for stock Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but the process should be similar for most phones.

  1. Go to Settings >Battery
  2. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right
  3. Select Battery saver
  4. You can turn it on manually, or select Turn on automatically
  5. Choose your desired time

Once Battery Saver has been activated, you will notice a few things right off the bat with your device. First and foremost, the display on your device will likely dim, as the brightness has automatically been decreased. Additionally, there will be a few applications that cannot be used, such as Google Maps, and there is a chance that location services and background data syncing have been turned off.

For some apps such as email, messaging, and others, the syncing will be turned off, but this will be updated and properly calibrated when you open each application. The built-in battery saver mode does everything it can to ensure you can squeeze as much juice out of your battery as possible.

In addition to setting up Battery Saver mode to turn on automatically, there is another easier way for you to activate this process if you choose to. Simply swipe down from the notification shade, and there should be a Battery Saver icon in the shade. This will automatically activate Battery Saver mode, allowing you to save some juice if you’ve been using your device more than usual during the day.

Although some brands include their own systems of this type, Android‘s native battery saver mode is one of the best ones.

By default, Android’s battery saver mode is not too configurable or customizable. Therefore, applications like Buoy promise to add more settings to this mode, this way the user has full control.

Buoy is a paid app and it is certainly worth the money. However, since it is an open-source project, it is possible to compile the code published on GitHub to get the APK file of the app for free. In our guide, we explain how you can compile the code of an Android app.

Once you’ve downloaded the app to your phone, you’ll need to grant it the necessary permissions. To do this, you will need to have a computer with ADB drivers installed. If you already have it, follow these steps:

  • Enable the USB debugging option on your phone through the developer settings.
  • Connect your phone to the computer via USB.
  • On the computer, open a command window or terminal.
  • Type and execute the command “adb devices”, and wait for a prompt to appear on the mobile screen that you must accept.
  • Again in the command window, execute the command “adb shell pm grant com.draco.buoy android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS”.
  • Disconnect the mobile phone from the computer.

That’s all. Now, you just have to play with the options provided by the application to configure the battery saver mode to your liking. For example, you can enable or disable the following functions when the saving mode is enabled:

  • Warn other apps that battery saver mode is being used.
  • Data saving for Wi-Fi or mobile networks
  • Dark mode
  • “Launch Boost” to speed up the startup of apps
  • Vibrate
  • Show window and activity animations
  • Allow apps to use the SoundTrigger software abstraction layer -HAL- SoundTrigger
  • Delay device backups
  • Use built-in system firewall
  • Change location access permissions for apps

  • Reduce maximum panel brightness
  • Force all apps to standby mode
  • Force apps not to query data in the background
  • Disable non-essential sensors
  • Use Always on Display mode

It’s worth mentioning that all features are available without the need for root and you don’t need tools like Magisk either. Buoy should work on any device with a version higher than Android 8, although those with a version of Android 10 or higher will be able to access more options.

How to set the battery level-

  • To turn on battery saver at any time, tap the On/Off switch.
  • To have battery saver turn on whenever your battery gets low, tap Turn on automatically, and select at 15% battery or 5% if you want.

Once this is set, the Android phone battery saver will start automatically in your device when the battery level is reaching 15% or 5%. It is not necessary to turn the switch on. The Off/On switch is for you to instantly turn on/off battery saver.

When battery saver is on-

When battery saver is on the top and bottom of your screen turn orange and you can’t use Google maps navigation, not update email, messaging and other apps that sync, until you open them. A battery icon is shown in the left of the status icon and a notification messages telling you battery saver is on.

Battery Saver mode is available on all devices running Android 5.0 and beyond. If your device is running on an older version – and therefore doesn’t come with the particular feature – we also have helpful battery tips that you could follow.

Battery Saver mode essentially acts as an emergency responder to when your device’s battery falls under a certain percentage – usually somewhere in the range of 15% – 20%. Its aim is to keep the phone alive as long as possible, which in some cases has proved to be a lifesaver.

To make that happen, Battery Saver decreases performance and kills off many of your device’s operations that are happening in the background. That would include blocking email and social networking apps’ automatic updates, GPS tracking from third-party apps and reducing vibrations.

While the above might not sound too much of a burden to you, constant checking for new data and location tracking are actually two of the biggest consumers of your device’s battery life.

All in all, while in battery mode, your Android phone or tablet will run a bit slower and many of the background features will be turned off, though, in return, your battery life will receive a great bump.

How do I turn on/off and configure Battery Saver mode?

To find Battery Saver mode, follow the steps listed below.

It is worth noting that you cannot technically ‘configure’ Battery Saver mode, as the only option available to the user is toggling it on and off. While many of us would appreciate being able to change the percentage in which Battery Saver kicks in, unfortunately, such an option is not currently available.

Moreover, Battery Saver automatically turns off when the charger is plugged in.

So should I just turn Battery Saver mode off?

Short answer: we’d strongly advise against it. Even if you carry a power bank with you at all times, consider the off-chance that you forget it, and you find yourself in a situation where every single drop of battery juice is important. Additionally, the compromises made to keep the phone alive are not that dramatic.

Android Battery Saver

You know how your Laptop has that a power saver mode, right? Well, your Android phone has that same feature on it. Recently I was wondering how I could configure the settings for my battery on my own cell. You might be asking, “Why should I want to do this to my phone?” Good question my friends. What does the Battery Saver Mode do for you? I have always thought it is important to ask why you should do something before actually doing it. Let me give the Why and then I will show you the How.

The Question

Why should I configure or change my Battery Saver settings?

The Answer

This helps prolong the life of your battery so you have time to get to a charger. As with your portable computer, it gives you extra time to save what you are doing before your battery life is gone. Here is a great example– you know when you are on a car trip and your phone is getting low? Then you realize you forgot your car charger? With Battery Saver mode set correctly, you will have more time to get to home and plug that device in.

Now that we know why you should do this, let me show you how to configure the battery to your liking. I will be showing this on two Android phones: mine, being the LG X Power, and my wife’s, a Moto G4.

Configuring Battery Saver Mode on Android

LG X Power

Step 1: First we will start with my phone. We will need to head to the Settings Screen. Swipe from the top down and this will bring down a menu. Now, tap on the Gear icon at the top-right.

Step 2: You should be on the Settings screen now. From here, tap on the Battery & power saving option.

Step 3: On the Battery & Power Saving screen you will see the On/Off switch. Next to that, a spot that says what the percentage is set at before the power saver kicks in. You can just tap on the ON switch or tap on the wording to go into settings. We are going to go into the settings. Tap Battery saver.

Step 4: Here is where you can choose when you would like to have the Battery Saver to kick in. As you can see, I chose 15%. After doing this, make sure you have it switched to ON. That’s it!

Now that we have seen it done on my Android phone, let us look at how to do this on the Moto G4.

Moto G4

Step 1: The Moto G4 loves doing things a little differently than my phone. First, swipe from the top down twice to have the menu you need to appear (you can swipe down once and then just tap the little arrow on the top-right, too). Tap on the gear on the top right.

Step 2: On the Settings screen, tap on the Battery option.

Step 3: Here you can see some information about your battery. What you need to do is tap on the Battery saver wording at the top.

Step 4: Once in here you can turn On or Off your Battery saver just like on the other phone. We will want to tap on the Turn on automatically wording (or whatever wording is placed there for you). Tap it

Step 5: Once you tap that you will see a little menu pop up. Here is where you can choose the setting you want. After choosing, make sure the Battery saver is turned ON. Now you should be all set.

The weird thing about my wife’s Moto G4 is that when the Battery saver is activated, the top and bottom turn to an orange color. I guess to make sure you know you have it on.

Time for you to setup your battery saver and keep you a little more relaxed.

(Exclusive to Google’s Pixel 3 and later is an even more powerful Extreme Battery Saver Mode, but seeing as this is a Pixel-exclusive feature, we won’t be talking about it any further.)

In fact, Battery Saver also disables things like app launch boost, vibrations, and animations, and it also limits the maximum brightness of the panel. Since Android’s battery saver mode is open source and can be controlled through the command-line interface for the Settings tables, it’s possible to tweak battery saver mode to make it more or less aggressive in what it disables.

Customize Android’s Battery Saver Mode

Method 1 – ADB Shell

  1. Follow this guide to set up ADB on your PC or read this post to learn how to set up a local ADB shell.
  2. Once you have ADB up and running, open a command prompt or terminal window and run the following command in shell:

where BOOLEAN is either true or false , INTEGER is a whole number, and FLOAT is a decimal number.
If you want to know what the parameters under battery saver mode are currently set to, you can run the following ADB shell:

This will show you the current battery saver policy and all the parameter values. Alternatively, you can check the output of:

…however, this won’t populate until after you’ve made changes to this Settings value at least once.
If you want to revert battery saver mode back to its default parameters, then you can run either:

Since we last covered how to tweak Android’s built-in battery saver mode through the command line, a developer has come up with an app that provides a GUI to change each of these parameters. If you don’t want to manually run shell commands and/or look through AOSP to find out exactly what each parameter does, then read on.

Method 2 – Buoy app

XDA Recognized Developer tytydraco, the developer of the LADB app we covered the other day, is back with another app called Buoy. It’s described as an “extension to the built in Android Battery Saver”, and what it does is exposes Android’s hidden parameters to customize the behavior of the battery saver mode. The app lets you toggle the following:

  • Advertising to other apps that low power mode is enabled
  • Android’s data saver for metered WiFi or mobile data connections
  • The built-in dark mode
  • Launch boost to accelerate app starts
  • Vibration
  • Showing window and activity animations
  • Allowing apps to use the SoundTrigger HAL
  • Deferring full device backups for later
  • Deferring app setting backups for later
  • Using the built-in web firewall to protect against possibly malicious sites
  • Changing the location access mode restrictions for apps
  • Reducing the max brightness of the panel
  • Forcing all apps into standby mode
  • Forcing all apps to not check data in the background
  • Disabling unnecessary sensors
  • Using the Always-On-Display
  • Putting the device into deep sleep as soon as the screen turns off

It also lets you toggle “sticky” low power mode, a feature added in Android 9 Pie that lets battery saver mode automatically re-enable itself when the device is unplugged from power or rebooted.

In order to use Buoy, you’ll need an Android device running Android 8.0 Oreo or later, though the available parameters will differ depending on the Android version. Also, you’ll have to grant the app the WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission or root access for it to change the value of Settings.Global.battery_saver_constants. Once again, I’ll refer you to our article on how to set up ADB or tytydraco’s LADB app so you can do that.

If you install the app and make any changes, be aware that the changes won’t automatically revert when you uninstall the app. You’ll have to either hit the “reset” button in Buoy or send one of the commands mentioned in step 4 from before in order to revert battery saver mode’s parameters back to default.

Battery Saver turns off several power-hungry features and changes a number of settings to extend battery life.   • Built-in dark mode
  • Launch Boost to speed up the application start-up
  • Vibration
  • Viewing window and activity animations
  • Allow apps to use SoundTrigger HAL
  • Defer full device backups for later
  • Postponing backups of application settings for later
  • Using the built-in web firewall to protect against potentially malicious sites
  • Changing location access mode restrictions for apps
  • Reduce maximum panel brightness
  • Force all apps to sleep mode
  • Force all apps not to check background data
  • Disabling unnecessary sensors
  • Using the always-on display
  • Put the device in deep standby as soon as the screen turns off

It also allows you to switch to “sticky” low consumption mode, a function added in Android 9 Pie which allows the battery saving mode to reactivate automatically when the device is unplugged from power or restarted.

To use Buoy, you will need an Android device running Android 8.0 Oreo or later, although the available settings vary depending on the version of Android. You will also need to grant the application WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission or root access so that it can change the value of Settings.Global.battery_saver_constants. Again, I refer you to our article on how to set up tytydraco’s ADB or LADB app for you to do so.

If you install the app and make any changes, be aware that the changes will not be automatically rolled back when you uninstall the app. You will either need to press the “reset” button in Buoy or send one of the commands mentioned in step 4 above in order to reset the battery saver mode settings to their defaults.

Buoy costs $ 0.99 on Google Play in the US, but it’s also open source so you can compile it yourself if you want. Alternatively, you can just manually set the battery saving mode settings as I mentioned earlier.     Description​

    The built-in Android battery saver mode is actually quite powerful. The only disappointment is that none of it is configurable out of the box. That’s where Buoy comes in. Buoy makes using the built-in battery saver feasible in any situation. If you want mild savings during the day without impeding performance, it can be done. If you need to squeeze every last ounce of power out of your device, it can be done. If you want anything in between, it can be done!

    Features​

    Sticky Low Power​

    Buoy also enables something called “sticky” low power mode. Usually, when the device is plugged in and unplugged, the low power mode is then disabled. However, sticky mode re-applies low power mode afterwards to continue saving battery.

    Disclaimers​

    Note that this app requires the WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission that can be granted with EITHER a PC using ADB or root. Root is NOT required for this app, it is optional. Android 8.0+ is supported, with more features enabled on Android 10+.

    Uninstalling the app will not reset the battery saver configuration. You must click the Reset button to undo all changes made by Buoy.
