How to delete contacts from your iphone

The iPhone’s software has grown a lot since it was first released. Despite its evolution, Apple’s Contacts app on the iPhone is still quite barebones. You can’t even delete multiple contacts in the app. But don’t worry, there’s an app for that!

While Apple clearly doesn’t seem to want additional organization features to the Contacts app, there are plenty of third-party apps to help you out. The Contact Groups app offers a simple option that lets you select and delete multiple contacts from your contact book.

The free version of the app lets you delete 10 contacts at a time and repeat the process as many times as you like. To remove the limit, you can subscribe to the pro version of the Contact Groups app, which costs $1.99/year or $5.99 for a lifetime purchase.

After downloading Contact Groups, give the app permission to access your contacts by tapping the “OK” button.

The app is designed to help you create and manage contact groups. As part of its core feature set, it also has a separate contact management section. Go to the “Contacts” tab to start the process.

How to delete contacts from your iphone

Here, tap the “Select” button from the top-left corner.

You can now scroll through your contact book and select the contacts that you want to delete.

Next, from the bottom toolbar, tap the “Delete” button.

From the pop-up message, tap the “Delete” button again to confirm.

And just like that, you’ll find that the contacts will be deleted from Apple’s built-in Contacts app. You reopen the Contacts app and search for a contact to confirm.

If you don’t want to use a third-party app, you can use the Contacts app to delete contacts one-by-one. Alternatively, you can use the iCloud website on your iPad or Mac to delete multiple contacts from your iCloud account.

When you’re scrolling through your contacts looking for one person you’d like to reach out to, you may become overwhelmed by the number of phone numbers, emails, and names of people who you no longer wish to communicate with.

How to delete contacts from your iphone

The early days of cell phones meant having your contacts transferred from device to device during the upgrade process. With iCloud and email backups available you can easily transfer contacts to every new device you get. While this is really convenient, you wind up with older contacts from the late 2000s. Although these contacts aren’t doing your phone any harm, it may be time to purge some content from your Contacts list.

If you’d like to delete all of your contacts from your phone there’s a fairly simple way to do this. If you’d like to pick and choose which ones go it’s a little more of a lengthy process. To save you time, we can show you how to delete your entire contact list (or in some cases hide multiple contacts).

How to delete contacts from your iphone

How To Delete All of Your Contacts on the iPhone

Step 1:В Open the Settings App and scroll down to the Contacts tab and then tap that button. How to delete contacts from your iphone

Step 2: Tap on Siri & Search then toggle the “Contacts Found in Apps” to the off position.

Step 3: Go back to the main screen of Settings and scroll up to Passwords & Accounts. Select a non-iCloud account, such as Gmail or another one.How to delete contacts from your iphone

Step 4:В Slide the Contacts slider to the “Off” position. Doing this will lead you to be prompted to delete all of the contacts that are stored locally on your phone.

Step 5:В Once you select the Delete From My iPhone, your contacts associated with that account will be deleted.

Step 6:В Go back and do this for the various different Accounts on your phone and once you did that, you shouldn’t have any contacts left.

The good news here is this doesn’t actually delete your contacts completely. Performing the above-listed tasks simply removes them from your iPhone.

Another option for hiding contacts (especially duplicates) is by going into the Contacts application on your phone – this is not the calling app, iPhones have an application specifically dedicated to Contacts. If you have trouble finding it swipe from the home screen to the right and type “Contacts” in the search bar at the top.

Once you open this application you can tap on Groups located at the top-right. This list shows you which backup source is showing contacts on your phone. How to delete contacts from your iphone

To hide contacts from a certain source, simply tap on it so that the blue checkmark goes away. Once you go back to your contact list you’ll notice some of the names and phone numbers are no longer clogging up your phone.

Deleting Select Contacts

Although this is easier from the iCloud, it can be performed on your iPhone too. Using your iPhone you can click on each contact, then tap on the Edit button located at the top-right of the screen. Scroll all the way down this page and click on “Delete Contact” in red. Confirm and that individual will be gone.

This is an incredibly lengthy process if you have more than a few contacts to purge. The simpler method is to log into iCloud on a computer and highlight multiple contacts at once.

Remove Contacts Using a Desktop

You can delete all contacts easily using a desktop. Go to the iCloud website and sign in with your iCloud account. Once you’ve passed the two-factor authentication you can open the Contacts menu on the iCloud website. There are a few things you can do in terms of how you want to delete your contacts.

If you hold the control button and click multiple different people in your contact list, you will be able to bulk delete them. However, if you want to delete them all, you can press control and the A button simultaneously to select them all at one time.

Once you have them all selected, you can hit the little cog on the bottom-left of the screen. From here, click on the delete option to remove the ones you’ve selected. Make sure that you really want them all deleted, as once you delete all the contacts, you will not be able to reverse the decision.

Editing Your Contacts

When a friend or acquaintance gets a new phone number it may be super easy to just have them send you a text. From there you can click on the “i” with a circle around it and add a new contact. Eventually, you’ll have so many duplicates you won’t know which one is the most updated one.

To edit and update your contact’s information follow these steps to keep your log from becoming overwhelmingly confusing or cluttered:

  1. Go to the phone app on your iPhone and select the middle option for Contacts
  2. Tap ‘Edit’ in the top right-hand corner
  3. Tap the plus sign that is surrounded by a green bubble (‘add phone’ will be next to it because you can add multiple phone numbers for one person)
  4. Enter the new phone number
  5. Tap the minus symbol in a red bubble to delete the old phone number – this also works with emails

Keeping your contacts log from filling up will help you to keep it organized over time. When backing up and restoring your phone you can go to the settings and choose which account you’d like to set as the default for contacts.

Similar to the instructions above go to contacts in the settings and scroll down until you see “Default Account.” Choose whether you’d like to keep your friends’ phone numbers in the iCloud or in an email account.

Following these steps may save you from a headache years from now.

Delete All Contacts From a Source

iPhones can pull in contacts from email accounts such as Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo Mail. Overall, this makes it really easy to add and remove contacts on your iPhone. If you remove a contact from a linked account or from your iPhone (as described above) it will be removed in both places. To delete all contacts from a single source, you can either delete the entire account or just turn off contacts sync from that source.

You can find out which sources are linked by going to Settings > Passwords & Accounts.

The accounts that sync contacts will have the word “Contacts” under it.

Delete Some Contacts, but Not All of Them

This is where things get tricky. There is no way to delete multiple contacts on an iPhone (unless you’re deleting them all)—it’s all or nothing. However, all is not lost. You can delete those contacts from the source account, and those changes will sync to your iPhone. Depending on where your contacts are, there will be different ways to remove multiple contacts. Consult your provider’s documentation (e.g. Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail).

But now you’re thinking: what if they’re contacts I have saved in my iPhone and not in an account? Well, you’re in luck, because there’s a workaround for that. Go to icloud.com and log in with your iCloud credentials.

Contacts on iPhone can easily get out of hand. Before you know it, you’ve got your Dad’s number next to “Delivery guy from Pizza Hut” and “Debbie, PTA mom”. You probably regularly contact about a dozen people, but I’ll bet you have over a hundred contacts. If you’ve decided enough is enough, you can delete all of your contacts. Of course, if you do this, all of your contacts will be gone. So write down any numbers you’ll want to add back. Deleting all of your contacts on iPhone isn’t an obvious process but it is an easy one. If you’d rather just delete multiple contacts on your iPhone, this article shows you how. Perhaps it’s outdated information for a former work colleague or an old flame. Maybe it’s the phone number and email for a PR person that you added years ago. Regardless, the Contacts app on your iPhone is likely filled with out of date information on people or is no longer necessary to keep. In these cases, the ideal solution would be to delete these rogue listings in bulk. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t make it possible to remove multiple contacts at once in an efficient manner.

However, there are two solutions worth considering when you want to delete multiple contacts. One of these requires using iCloud on your Mac or PC; the other is a third-party app.

Using iCloud

Assuming you’re using iCloud, your contacts are stored and backed up in the cloud for use across all your Apple devices, including iOS and macOS machines. Thanks to iCloud, changes made to contact information are pushed out to all of your devices automatically. For example, when you change the email for someone in your Contacts app on your iPhone, the change is also reflected on your MacBook Pro or another device.

Unlike on the Contacts app on iPhone, you can select multiple contacts to delete using the web version of iCloud on your Mac. To get started:

Visit iCloud.com on a computer (not from a mobile device) and log in using your Apple ID and password.

On the main page, select Contacts.

In the box, confirm your choice by choosing Delete.

The contacts you selected are now deleted across all of your devices. Yes, we understand this process isn’t a simple one; a better solution is to go with a third-party iOS app.

Using Groups

To delete contacts in bulk on your iPhone, one third-party app stands out: Groups. The freemium app provides advanced features through in-app purchases. The ability to delete contacts is a free tool, however.

To delete contacts with the Groups app:

  1. Download the Groups app on your iPhone.
  2. Launch the Groups app on your iPhone.
  3. Grant Groups access to your contacts when prompted.
  4. Select All Contacts from the Groups list.
  5. Go through your contacts and mark the ones you’d like to delete by tapping on the circle outline to the left of their name.

Tap Choose Action at the top.

Tap on Delete contacts. in the popup menu.

Tap on Remove from my iPhone! to confirm.

That’s it! You can now go into the built-in Contacts app on your iPhone and verify that the selected contacts have been deleted. These contacts are also no longer listed on your other devices, including the iPad and Mac. While Groups isn’t the most attractive app available, it gets the job done quickly and efficiently. Give it a try!

Ever feel like you’re scrolling through your iPhone endlessly to find the one contact you need? Contact bloat is a real issue: as the years go by, new contacts get added, numbers are changed and some services can even create duplicate contacts. Thankfully, cleaning up the contact clutter can be easy, if you follow a few simple steps.

Apple is known for its user-friendly stance on privacy, but that doesn’t mean using an iPhone is completely secure. Tap or click here to see how your iPhone is secretly tracking your every move.

From staying on top of synced accounts to deleting unwanted contacts to merging duplicate contacts and more, with these four simple steps even the most bloated, disorganized contacts list can be reigned in.

1. Turn off unnecessary account syncing

When you connect accounts like iCloud, email, or Microsoft Exchange to your iPhone, these services will automatically download information attached to these accounts.

For example, a connected Gmail account will automatically download your Gmail contacts and add them to your contact list. If you don’t store important contacts on any third-party accounts, it’s important to turn off syncing for those accounts or at least disable the syncing of contacts.

Configuring information that is synced from different accounts is thankfully easy: simply open the Settings app and navigate to Passwords & Accounts. From here, all your connected accounts will be listed, and by tapping on an account you will be able to toggle sync on and off for a variety of data, including mail, contacts, calendars, and notes.

2. Delete unwanted contacts manually

As people and services come in and out of your life, you may find you’d like to remove specific contacts from your iPhone altogether. Deleting contacts manually only takes a few taps:

  1. Open the Phone app and tap the Contacts tab.
  2. Select the contact you’d like to delete.
  3. Tap Edit at the top-right of the screen.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the contact and select Delete Contact.

If the contact you happen to delete was synced from another service, the contact will be removed from both your iPhone and the service.

3. Merge duplicate contacts

It’s easy to forget what contacts you have stored where, so duplicate contacts will likely pop up over time, especially if you sync contacts with another account. But deleting duplicates individually is tedious, and what if you’d like to keep some synced contacts, but not all, from a third-party account?

The solution to all these problems is the free app Cleanup Duplicate Contacts!

How to delete contacts from your iphone

Cleanup Duplicate Contacts works by scanning your contacts for either perfect or partial matches. Then, users can choose to remove or merge any or all of the duplicate contacts discovered.

The app even allows you to customize your scan, choosing exactly what level of similarity you’re looking for in your contacts. While the app is free, upgrading to the premium version will allow you to save scan results for later viewing.

Here are some features you get with the app:

  • Instant Cleanup of Duplicate Contacts
  • Choose the merge-level you need
  • Very fast – 5000 contacts centralized in about 45 seconds
  • Detailed reports of scanned results
  • Automatic merging of duplicate contact
  • Manages multiple contact sources like Gmail and iCloud
  • Creates a backup of your address book before cleaning
  • Lets you easily restore backups or a part of a backup

4. Centralize contacts with an address book manager

The above steps work to keep your iPhone’s contact list as clutter-free as possible, but there are many apps that replace Apple’s Contact’s app altogether. Address book managers, like Contacts+ or CircleBack, support third-party syncing, build in contact deduplication features and work across devices and platforms.

CircleBack updates your contacts intelligently, finds new contacts in your Google, Microsoft, and Exchange inboxes, cleans up duplicates, and allows you to scan business cards and save them as contacts. Packed with everything you need to stay organized while building and maintaining productive professional relationships, CircleBack makes it easier than ever to clean up your contacts.

Best of all, the most popular apps are free to download. An address book manager is your one-stop-shop for all your needs, and with only a simple download and login, your contacts will be available anywhere at the touch of a button.

Address book managers also often offer more advanced organization features, like scanning business cards, custom contacts grouping, automatic contact enrichment, spam block, and contact discovery.

Contacts+ is a cloud-based address book designed to take the hassle out of contact management. Truly multi-platform, Contacts+ syncs your contacts across your devices (including iOS, Mac, PC, & other mobile devices) as well as across various accounts you may store contacts in (such as Gmail, Exchange, Office365, and Twitter).
