How to forward ports on your router

This guide will help you Port Forward your Netgear Router. Port forwarding is necessary in order to access your computer remotely. If you do not port forward your router, you will only be able to access your device on the internal network.

Step 1: Login to the Netgear router via the default gateway address.

Step 2: Select “Advanced” and then “Port Forwarding/Port Triggering.”

Step 4: Enter a Device Name, Starting Port, End Port, and IP Address. Select “TCP/UDP” under Protocol.

Please Note: If you are using a mobile application, you will simply need to use your hostname to connect. The application should already specify the port when attempting to make the connection.

Forwarding ports is a useful trick in gaming because it can really help to make your network connection most stable and frequently even faster. Routers were not designed to allow incoming network requests and some games can play tremendously better if an incoming connection is forwarded through the router to the game.

Before You Forward a Port

Before you can forward a port you need to know the following things:

  • Your router’s IP address.
  • The IP address of the device that the game will play on: either your computer or your console.
  • A list of TCP and UDP ports to forward.

The process for forwarding a port is usually:

  • Login to your router.
  • Locate your routers port forwarding section.

  • Intermittently you have to reboot your router for the changes to take effect.

How to forward ports on your router

Port forwarding is the process that a router or firewall uses to sort the right kind of network data to the right port. Computers and routers use ports as a way to organize network data. Different types of data, such as web sites, file downloads, and online games, are each assigned a port number. The router or firewall uses forwarding to send the correct data to the correct place.

How to forward ports on your routerPort forwarding is useful when you have multiple devices connected to a router, because it allows you to redirect networking traffic to the proper port.

A firewall protects a computer by blocking unauthorized information, but if a firewall blocked all the incoming and outgoing data, the computer would be unable to access the Internet. When a computer user wants some data to go through the firewall and to send it to a specific location, he can set up port forwarding. This gives the firewall instructions about which types of data are allowed and how they should be directed.

Information on the Internet is associated with a port. Web pages, for example, are typically assigned port 80. File transfer protocol (FTP), often used for downloading and uploading files, typically uses port 21. Online games may use a number of different port numbers, but often choose numbers in the thousands.

Someone who has multiple computers on a network will likely find that they do not all need all of the data that comes into the network. Port forwarding allows the user to send the relevant data to the computer that will use it. If a web server is hosting a website and a second computer hosting an online game, this process will make sure that each computer receives the data it needs without being bogged down with data intended for the other computer.

In this situation, a person would use port forwarding to instruct the router as to which computer is the destination for which data. The instructions would send all incoming requests for web pages to the web server. This data would come in to the router at port 80, and the forwarding instructions would route that data to the web server.

The online game server might be set to use port 5500. Any data that comes to the network at port 5500 should be from people trying to play the online game using the computer as a host. The forwarding information in the router will direct all data coming in using port 5500 to go to the online game hosting computer.

Using port forwarding also serves as another way to protect computers. People outside the network will only have access to the router or firewall, which will, in turn, control which types of data reach the computers. Any data that does not come to the router with the correct port will not be passed through to the computers inside the network.

Not only does this keep incoming data flowing to the right computer, but it also helps to protect a network by limiting and controlling outside access. If a network includes a web server, FTP server, or game server, or runs other services that require outside access, this process will help keep the network safe and running smoothly.

I’m using a VPN to privatize my downloading. When I have it turned on, it seems to block certain TCP ports that I have setup in my router, but when I have the VPN turned off these ports work. Is there a way to open these ports through the VPN? anon288025 August 28, 2012

I use a VPN service called hushtunnel and it also has a VNC included. the program interface is great as it makes everything easy and simple – you just control it from there. So if you are playing games it will sort it out for you automatically. anon236709 December 25, 2011

It finds out, but it takes shorter time to have a fixed receiver (ip address) when there is something incoming on a port. I think port forwarding means that the incoming on a port first is sent to the computer set to that port. If it’s the wrong computer, the router uses the normal slower procedure. It does know automatically. But,by using port-forwarding you make sure the data gets to your X-box immediately without going all around the router when on ‘automatic’. Basically, it will increase your speed of play.

E.g., if you are playing a ‘shoot-em-up’ game against somebody and you both have the same ‘ping’ times etc (you’re both equal in other words), if you shoot each other at exactly the same time, the chap with ‘port-forwarding’ assigned to his X-box will win. anon129537 November 24, 2010

I don’t know a lot about computers or the internet but my understanding of port forwarding is that it configures your router to allow certain downloads through. is that correct? anon110292 September 11, 2010

My assumption is that, for example, like MSN using port 6901, at the moment we log in, this port is open and when outside people want to chat with you, a packet is sent at the router (gateway) and and aspect router to do something like trying to look at which computer is opening port 6901. Then it forwards appropriate packets to you.

I think port forwarding is so stupid, why do you have to go through so much trouble with a wireless modem. With my old modem you never had to enable any ports. It’s such a waste of time. anon82656 May 6, 2010

It does know. Your router may or may not be preconfigured with the ports required by the 360 to work being open.

If you have an older router those ports could be closed and the 360 unless it has its own ability to configure which ports it uses will not work. anon42253 August 20, 2009

One basic question that I still do not understand about port forwarding: as in playing an internet game on Xbox360, why is port forwarding necessary?

Why doesn’t the router know automatically what to do with the incoming data for the game?

With some games and applications, it may be necessary to open one or more ports or setup port forwarding on your home router. Below are the steps required with most routers and additional help and suggestions with troubleshooting encountered issues.

Ports are often closed on a router to help prevent unauthorized access to your home network. Opening any additional ports on your router may decrease the overall security of your network.

If you want to open ports to give access to a game or an application like BitTorrent, make sure it is absolutely necessary. In some situations, it may be a firewall on your computer or router that is blocking access. Try temporarily disabling your firewall to make sure this is not causing your problems.

  1. To use port forwarding, first determine the local IP address of the computer.
  2. Open your router configuration.
  3. Once in the router configuration, locate the port forwarding settings, often in a section such as Applications & Gaming or Port forwarding. If you are having trouble finding these settings, we suggest trying the Port forward site for exact steps on your router or refer to your router’s documentation.
  4. Once at the port forwarding screen, a screen similar to one of the example picture below appears.

Single port forwarding

Referring to the following picture as an example, with single port forwarding, you have different fields that need to be completed.

First, the Application Name is the name given to describe what the ports are that you are opening. In our example below, you can see this router has drop-down menus and empty boxes. If you are opening a common port such as FTP, selecting that option enables that port. However, in most situations, you need to type the name of the application. For example, you would type in the name of the game.

Next is the Externet Port and Internet Port. Enter the port you want to open in both of these fields. For example, if you were opening port 88, you would enter 88 in both boxes.

Next is the Protocol, which is often able to be either TCP, UDP, or both. If you are uncertain of the exact protocol needed, use both. If you do not have a Both option, create two open ports for both TCP and UDP.

Next is the To IP address, which is the IP address of the computer or networking device. This port is being forwarded to on the network.

Finally, once all these values are configured, check the Enabled box and click the Save Changes button.

Port range forwarding

If your application or game requires a range of ports, such as 6112-6119, your router should have a Port Range forwarding section (shown below). In this section, you would follow the same steps as those mentioned above, however, instead of entering an individual port, you would enter the starting and ending port number. For example, if you were given instructions to open port 6112-6119, you would enter 6112 as your starting port and 6119 as your ending port.

Finally, if after enabling port forwarding you are still encountering issues with another computer or application seeing your computer, it may be necessary to enable DMZ. Often this setting is in the same area of the router configuration as discussed above and can be changed from disabled to enabled.

Testing if an outside network can see the new port

Several services can test if your newly-opened port is recognized. We suggest trying Canyouseeme and the port checker tool from Portforward.

We’ve all been faced with messages telling us that we need to “open ports” or “forward ports” for one reason or another. Whether it’s an Internet security feature, remote desktop access, or an online-based game, there may be good reasons for you to set up port forwarding on your router. Before taking the plunge, you should be aware of what this means exactly, the (relatively small) risks involved, and how to keep control over this process.

What Are Ports?

Think of ports as virtual passages inside your router which control traffic going between your computer and the Internet. Only specific ports are kept open at all times, ensuring you don’t get any unwanted or harmful traffic piling on on your computer.

Certain ports have fixed roles, such as delivering website data to your computers (ports 80 and 443), in most cases. Others, meanwhile, are kept free and can be used by other applications (whose developers assign ports for these apps to run on). You can find a full list of router ports and what they’re assigned to here.

First, Set Up a Static IP Address

In order for port forwarding to work, you’ll need to set a static internal IP address (ipv4) for your device. By default, your ipv4 address is probably dynamic, which means it’s always changing, so the port forwarding won’t be able to pin down your device on your home network.

Windows

Go to “Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Centre -> Change adapter settings.”

Right-click “Local Area Connection,” click Properties, then under the Networking tab select “Internet Protocol Version 4” from the list and click Properties.

In the new box select “Use the following IP address.” What you enter here will depend on your IP settings. To check your IP settings, go to the command prompt and enter ipconfig /all .

IP address: This needs to have the same subnet as your default gateway, so only change the numbers after the final dot. For example, our default gateway is “192.168.0.1,” and we made our IP address “192.168.0.100.”

Subnet mask: Enter the same number as what is shown in ipconfig.

Default gateway: Again, same numbers that you see in ipconfig.

Preferred DNS server: Same as the DNS servers in your ipconfig.

When you’re finished, click OK, and you should have a functioning static IP address.

How to Open Ports and Set up Port Forwarding on Your Router

First, remember that it might not be your router blocking ports but your firewall, so before digging into your router, check your firewall settings and see if you can control your ports from there. (How to do this will vary between different firewalls.)

Once you’ve done that, and you still need to open up the ports, it’s on to the router. Again, this process will vary from router to router, but the general gist of it is the same. We’ll be doing it on a Virgin Hub 3.0.

1. Log into your router through your web browser. My router address (default gateway) is 192.168.0.1, but this may be 192.168.1.1 for you or something else altogether. There’s a good chance your router address (and password) is written on your actual router, so check that.

2. Once you’ve logged into your router, head over to “Port Forwarding.” For me this is under “Advanced -> Security,” but it may vary slightly for you.

3. Now, the important bit. You’ll be presented with a scary-looking list of boxes to fill with numbers. It’s not so bad.

  • Local IP: Enter the number of the static IP address you set up earlier.
  • Local start and end point: In most cases these can be the same as the “external start point and external end point.” It can be a range of ports (8035-8040, for example), or it can just be one port in which case you put the same number into the start and end point boxes. If you have multiple devices connecting to the same application, then you may want to make the “local” port number different from the fixed “external” one.
  • External start point and end point: This is dictated by the port used by your given application. Refer to the list we linked to earlier to find the application.
  • Protocol: The application should specify what kind of protocol it uses. Most are TCP, some are UDP, but if you’re unsure, select “Both.”
  • Enabled: Switches the port forwarding on or off.

Below is the port forwarding setup we created to run a private Minecraft server, using the port numbers assigned by Minecraft.

Port Forwarding: How to Check If Your Router/Firewall Ports are Open Correctly

One of the most common issues our new users have when setting up their No-IP account is port forwarding. Port Forwarding is a very simple task, but every router manufacturer does it differently, so for the best resource of information, you should check out your router manufacturer’s website for detailed information. You can check out this article if you are still having trouble:

After you have successfully forwarded your ports, you will want to check to see if they are forwarded correctly. You can use this tool to see if your ports are open correctly: www.portchecktool.com.

This tool will check for open ports and see if there are any services responding on that port. It comes in handy when troubleshooting your network. Specifically, it helps in checking to see if your ISP blocks certain ports such as HTTP port 80 and SMTP port 25 (commonly blocked by major broadband residential ISPs).

Additionally, if those ports are blocked, No-IP has a solution that will get around this block. Users with ISPs that block the standard HTTP port can use the port 80 redirect feature available to all users. This can be found in the member section when managing your host. No-IP also offers Mail Reflector and Alternate-Port SMTP services for those with ISPs that block inbound and outbound SMTP port 25 respectively.

Keep in mind when using this tool you will need to open up the Port Check Tool website from the same WAN IP address that you wish to check for open ports.

Port forwarding can help you set up a Minecraft server, access your files and desktop remotely, improve your internet connection speeds, and more. While it might seem complicated, once you understand what port forwarding is and how it works, it can be quite simple. Here’s how to forward ports on your router using a Mac or Windows 10 PC.

What is Port Forwarding?

Port forwarding is a way of making your router use a specific port to communicate with certain devices. By setting a specific port for your devices, you are telling your router to always accept requests for those ports and forward data to a device’s private IP address.

In order to understand port forwarding, it helps to understand a little about how routers work first. Your router’s job is to transmit an internet signal to all your devices over a local area network (LAN). To do this, your router assigns each device in your LAN its own local IP address. For example, your computer will have a private IP address like 192.168.0.2 or 10.0.2.

Then, on top of that, the applications and services on each device are also assigned a port number. For example, an application on your computer will have an IP address with a port number attached like 192.168.0.2:80 or 10.0.0.2:80.

With this unique IP address and port number, your router knows which program or service to send information to. This lets you and others access devices and programs on your LAN over a wide area network (WAN).

How to Port Forward

To forward ports on your router, log into your router and go to the port forwarding section. Next, enter the port numbers and your device’s IP address. Choose a forwarding protocol and save your changes.

Note: If you don’t see a port forwarding option in your router’s settings, you might have to upgrade. Check out our list of the best routers for 2020 here to find one that works for you.

  1. Open a web browser. You can use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or any browser you want.
  2. Then type your router’s IP address into the address bar. If you don’t know this information, check out this guide for how to find your router’s IP address on a Mac or Windows 10 computer. It should be a series of numbers like 192.168.X.X or 10.0.X.X.Also, make sure to take note of your computer’s IP Address because you might need this information later.

Note: You might get a privacy warning that tells you it’s unsafe to visit your router’s IP address. Just click Advanced > Proceed to continue.

  • Next, enter your router’s username and password. If you don’t know this information, check out our step-by-step guide on how to find your router’s username and password here. How to forward ports on your router
  • Then go to the port forwarding settings on your router. The exact steps to get to the correct settings will vary depending on which router you have. In most cases, you will have to go to the Advanced tab and look for NAT, Security, Gaming, Advanced Setup, Firewall, or Virtual Servers.
  • Next, create a new port forwarding rule. Some routers require you to click Add New, Add Custom Service, or something similar. How to forward ports on your router
  • Then enter a name for the service or application. You can give this any name you want. It is recommended that you use one that lets you identify the rule you’ve created.
  • Next, type in the port number you want to use. Most routers let you select a port range separated by hyphens, or multiple ports separated by commas. In most cases, it’s easiest to set the same internal and external port numbers. You can choose a number between 0 to 65,535, but only ports 0 to 1023 are reserved for privileged services and are designated as well-known ports. You can find a full list of ports and their corresponding services here.

    Note: The most common ports to open are 80 for handling requests for opening websites, and 21 for sharing files over a network. If you are setting up a Minecraft server, you should use port 25565.

  • Then select a port forwarding protocol. You will typically see the option to set your service type to TCP, UDP, TCP/UDP, Both, or All. Which one you choose will depend on the type of connection that is recommended to use for the specific application. However, you usually want to select the TCP/UDP option, Both, or All.
  • Next, type in your computer’s IP address. Most routers provide fields where you can enter the IP address of your device. There are also routers that let you choose a device instead of typing in the device’s IP address.     Note: If you have not set a static IP address for your device, your IP address might change when you turn your device off, reset your router, or your ISP changes your IP address for you. You can only set a static IP address on a device by going through the settings of that device.   • Finally, save your settings. Most of the time, you will be able to click on buttons that say Save or Apply. There are other routers that require you to click on Enable before you can hit on Save.

    UPnP is a convenient way for programs to forward ports without you having to pull up your router’s web interface and forward ports manually. Unfortunately, some programs that require port forwarding don’t support UPnP – that’s where UPnP PortMapper comes in.

    This application takes care of port forwarding for you, right from your desktop. If your IP address changes, you don’t need to log into your router and change your port forwarding rules – you can have the application update them for you.

    If you visit a friend’s house and join their network, you don’t have to ask for their router’s password to forward ports – just fire up the application and activate your preset rules.

    Installation

    UPnP Port Mapper is written in Java, so you’ll need the free Java Runtime Environment (download from Ninite) installed to run it. After installing Java, you can download UPnP Port Mapper from SourceForge. In addition to Windows, this application also works on Mac OS X and Linux.

    UPnP Port Mapper communicates with your router with the UPnP protocol, so you’ll also need a router with UPnP enabled to use this application. If UPnP is disabled on your network’s router, this program can’t do anything.

    After downloading UPnP Port Mapper, double-click the .jar file to launch it.

    To get started, click the Connect button in UPnP Port Mapper. If you see a Windows Firewall pop-up window, click the Unblock button. You may have to allow Java network access in the Windows firewall pop-up that appears.

    If UPnP PortMapper informs you that it can’t find your router, click the Connect button again unblocking the application in the Windows firewall.

    If it worked, you’ll see a list of UPnP port mappings in the top pane (this list will be empty by default), as well as your router’s external IP address on the Internet and its IP address on your local network.

    To create a new port forwarding preset, click the Create button.

    Enter a description for your port forwarding rule and provide a list of one or more ports to forward. You can specify port ranges or forward a list of ports using a single preset.

    You can also specify a specific remote host. If you enter an IP address, only traffic from that IP address will be forwarded to your computer from your router. For example, you can use this feature to only allow connections from a friend’s IP address on the Internet.

    The Use local host box is checked by default, making it easy to forward ports without having to double-check your computer’s local IP address. However, you could also use this application to forward ports to multiple different computers on your network.

    How to forward ports on your router

    Port forwarding presets you specify will appear in the Port mapping presets box. Select a preset and click the Use button to activate it.

    Clicking this button forwards the ports on your router – they’ll appear in the Port mappings box at the top of the window. You can remove port mappings by selecting them and clicking the Remove button.

    The port mappings will be saved on your router until its UPnP data is cleared – depending on your router, this may happen when your router is restarted. If you open UPnP Port Mapper later and click the Connect button, you’ll see your active port mappings.

    You will also need to reapply port mapping settings if your computer’s local IP address changes.

    With your presets, you can quickly and easily apply these port mapping settings on any network with a router that supports UPnP – this can be convenient if you move around and need to forward ports for gaming, servers, or other purposes.
