How to “hide” an app on your iphone or ipad

How to “hide” an app on your iphone or ipad

Want to hide an app or two from appearing on the iOS home screen? Maybe you want to hide all apps downloaded from the App Store, but keep the defaults visible? Or maybe you just want to hide a stock app that shipped with your iPhone or iPad like Safari or iTunes? You can do all of the above or any of the above, and none of it requires any funky tweaks or downloads to perform. It turns out that hiding any type of app is really easy in iOS.

We’ll cover three different ways to hide apps, including hiding Apple’s default apps that ship with iOS devices which can’t be deleted, hiding downloaded apps from the App Store, and another approach that will hide anything from immediate view while still retaining the apps accessibility in iOS.

These tricks work in all versions of iOS. Note the apps aren’t deleted and they aren’t uninstalled in any of these processes, they are just hidden from view. Uninstalling apps is easy and fast, but completely separate.

Hide Apple Default Apps on the iPhone & iPad

This trick will hide any app that comes preinstalled on iOS. You can use this to hide Safari, Camera (which also disables the camera completely), FaceTime, Watch, GameCenter, and iTunes apps:

  1. Open Settings and tap on “General”
  2. Go to “Restrictions” and tap “Enable Restrictions”, set a passcode for restrictions if you haven’t yet
  3. Under “Allow” toggle the apps you want to hide to OFF, i.e. flip the switch next to “Safari” to OFF if you want to hide Safari
  4. Exit out of Restrictions when satisfied

Return to the home screen to discover the apps you toggled to OFF to no longer be visible. They are still installed on the device, they are simply hidden from the user without going back to Restrictions and toggling them ON again.

Not all Apple default apps will be visible in that list, though that may change in future iOS versions, for now if you want to hide all default apps you’ll need to combine several of the tricks outlined in this article to hide them all.

Hide All Downloaded Apps from the iOS Home Screen

This is a simple way to hide every single app that has been downloaded to iOS from the App Store, removing them from the home screen:

  1. Open Settings and tap on “General”
  2. Go to “Restrictions” and make sure they are enabled
  3. Scroll down under “Allowed Content” and look for “Apps”
  4. Tap “Don’t Allow Apps” to instantly hide all downloaded apps

Go back to the home screen and you’ll discover all apps downloaded from the App Store are missing, even those from Apple. If you have a lot of third party apps this will make a huge difference and can take a home screen from being full to only those that came on the device to begin with:

How to “hide” an app on your iphone or ipad

Again, they aren’t deleted from the iPhone or iPad, they are simply hidden from view until the App Restrictions are set to “All” again. This is also a decent trick to use if you want to quickly hand your iOS device off to someone else and don’t want them having access to seeing personal data contained within some apps. If you’re hiding the apps and handing an iPad or iOS device off to a child it can also be a good idea to quickly toggle the switches for age-appropriate apps, prevent apps from being deleted from the device, turn off in-app purchases, all quick adjustments within Restrictions.

Important Note: Toggling the “Hide All” option ON and OFF and ON again will reset the Home Screen icon arrangements, and any apps contained in folders will be pulled out of their folders. Be aware of this, but remember that you can easily restore your old Home Screen layout by resyncing with iTunes or iCloud (thanks to Dave, Dean, and Matt for clarifying this).

Hide Apps in a Folder

This is the age-old traditional method that has been around as long as Folders, and it’s probably best for unused apps, though it’s more like hiding something from view rather than truly hiding it. Nonetheless, it’s a valid solution in many cases and is extremely simple:

  1. Tap and hold on any app icon until it starts to jiggle
  2. Drag that app icon onto another app you want to hide to create a folder, name it whatever you want like “Unused”
  3. Drag other apps to hide into that folder as necessary

How to “hide” an app on your iphone or ipad

Because this relies on a folder, the app is really only hidden from the home screen because it’s now in another container. In a way this is kind of like putting something into a virtual closet that rarely gets opened rather than truly hiding it, but for some things that you can’t really control otherwise, can’t delete, and can’t hide directly, it works.

Remember, another approach is to uninstall or delete an app rather than try to hide it. Deleting apps works on apps you have downloaded from the iOS App Store, but not apps that come preinstalled since they can’t be removed.

Other Hiding Methods: Newsstand, Third Party Tweaks, Jailbreaks, etc

The tips to hide apps in iOS mentioned above work in all somewhat modern releases of iOS, even if the settings screens look slightly differently the options remain possible.

But, these aren’t the only options. There are some other quirky tweaks out there that rely on software bugs, like quickly jamming apps or other folders into the Newsstand folder before it closes, but because those methods are reliable on iOS software bugs they are usually patched and don’t last too long, making them not the most reasonable solutions. Every once in a while an “App Hider” tweak will also make it’s way through the App Store either for iOS or OS X and those can work too, but because they are also relying on software bugs they typically get pulled quickly, and the bug it relied on also gets patched quickly.

Finally, there are some jailbreak tweaks out there to hide any app, but because jailbreaking is iOS version dependent, they aren’t applicable to everyone. Thus we focused on the consistently reliable approaches using legitimate ways through Settings and Folders. Do note that older versions of iOS will have another option or two when hiding defaults, and prior to iOS 6 you can hide the YouTube app as well in those same Settings options.

We don’t really recommend these alternate methods of trying to hide apps, just stick with what is built into iOS and what is proven to work across each version. Relying on a specific tweak or trick is not sustainable in the long run, so it’s better to remove the apps you don’t want, and hide the apps you don’t want to see on any Iphone, Ipad, or iPod touch.

Keeping prying eyes from poking around in your more precious apps is always a concern, especially for those of us with nosey friends or kids. Until now, keeping apps private meant hiding them in a folder somewhere, but wouldn’t it be ideal to be able to hide apps entirely? Thanks to a funky trick in iOS 7.1, you can. Here’s how:

Here’s our starting screen. Make sure you have a full page of apps and a full dock.

Now you need to create a folder with the apps we wish to hide. We’ll call this folder “Folder 1” for simplicity. In this example I’ll be hiding the Facebook and Starbucks apps, but you can do this with absolutely any app on your phone that can be placed in a folder, including those pesky stock apps that refuse to be deleted.

Next you need to nest Folder 1 within another folder, which we’ll call “Folder 2.” If you’re not familiar with how to do this, check out our iOS 7.1 nested folder tutorial here.

Once you have Folder 1 nested, you must remove the apps you placed in Folder 2, leaving just Folder 1 within Folder 2. You should now have what appears to be a blank folder on your home screen. You should now have one open space on your Home screen, but we need to fill that, so drag any random app you have into that spot.

Now, go into Folder 2 and highlight Folder 1 so you can move it. Drag Folder 1 out of Folder 2 and down into the dock area. This will cause Folder 2 to disappear after a second, and as soon as it does, release Folder 1 in the dock. Instead of finding a new home on your screen it will disappear completely. We have now hidden the Facebook and Starbucks apps.

You won’t find them anywhere, on any screen or within any folder. Yet, you still have full access to them via the iOS search feature. Touch the middle of your home screen and pull down, revealing the search bar. Type in the name of the hidden app you wish to use and you’ll find it’s still there and can be used just like normal.

Regret the decision to hide an app? You can easily bring back all of your hidden apps by either restarting the device or by going into the iOS settings menu, clicking the “Nike + iPod” app and activating, and then deactivating it. Once you’ve done so, all hidden apps will pop back onto the Home screen.

As I said above, you can use this trick to hide any apps or folders you want, and still have full access to the apps via the search bar. YouTuber Videosdebarraquito uses a similar trick to hide stock apps using the Newsstand on the iPhone 4/4s, but our tutorial should work for anyone running iOS 7.1. Now enjoy your newfound power of secrecy, and don’t get into any mischief.

Downloading new apps on your iPhone can be exciting but things get a bit irritating when you have to spend several minutes trying to find your desired app on the home screen.

This happens when your home screen is filled with all kinds of apps, especially if you’re using an iPhone that has a higher storage capacity. It’s natural to utilize that but it also comes with the fact that your interface becomes cluttered.

Personally, I like to keep my home screen organized by usually hiding some of the apps that I don’t use very often. This can help you become more productive by keeping a clean home screen which only has the most important apps on the forefront.

If that sounds like something you’d want to do, then let’s find out how to go about doing it via several different ways.

Tips to organize apps on your home screen

Hiding apps on your iPhone does help a lot in organizing your home screen but there are also some other cool ways which you can utilize to make things a little bit more clutter-free.

Creating folders to store apps of the same category

If you have trouble locating apps on your home screen, then this tip will help you a lot. What you can do is, identify the apps that are of the same category and put all of them inside a folder.

In the screenshot above, you’ll notice all the social networking apps are on the same folder, so whenever I want to access a social app, I know exactly where it is located.

Keep important apps on the first page

I love this feature of iPhone which lets you rearrange apps on different pages without having to fill all slots. With the help of this, you can drag the unnecessary apps on the second page and keep your first page as tidy as you like.

The reason this works so well for productivity is because whenever you unlock your device, the first page is where you land on.

Place important apps on the dork

You can replace apps on your dork with something you use on a regular basis.

How to “hide” an app on your iphone or ipad

For example, the default music app on the far right of my dork is something I don’t really use, so I am going to replace it with another music app called Spotify, since I use that quite often.

I am certain this will save me the tiny trouble of swiping to the last page of my home screen to access it. If you wish, you can also place folders on the dork.

Conclusion

It may not seem like it makes a lot of difference, but hiding certain apps and organizing your home screen can make your daily tasks a lot simpler, especially because we spend a lot of time on our smartphones.

Hopefully, this change can make you more productive and achieve more while spending less time.

Got a few iOS apps and website shortcuts you’d rather keep hidden? With this handy trick, you can quickly and easily create “invisible” folders that let you disguise icons from prying eyes — and you don’t need a jailbroken device. Here are the steps you need to follow.

Hide apps and shortcuts in an ‘invisible’ folder on your iPhone or iPad

1. Get your wallpaper

The magic behind this trick is the wallpaper; using a wallpaper with a solid color allows folder shadows to blend into the background and appear invisible. Gray and white wallpapers work best, and the two you can download below are the perfect shade. Just pick whichever you prefer.

Note that you can use any wallpaper on your lock screen, so if you have a photo you like to use as your background, you can still keep it there — it’s only the home screen that need to be a solid color.

You may also have to use the “Zoomed” home screen setting on more recent iPhones. We recommend trying this out with both “Standard” and “Zoomed” and using the one you think works best.

2. Set transparency

Before setting your new wallpaper, you need to alter the transparency settings on your device. To do this, open the Settings app, tap General then Accessibility, then tap Increase Contrast.

If you decided to use the gray background, activate Reduce Transparency. If you chose the white wallpaper, ensure this setting is disabled.

3. Set your wallpaper

With your transparency settings updated, it’s time to set your new wallpaper. To do this, open the Settings app, tap Wallpaper, then Choose a New Wallpaper. You’ll find the wallpaper you just downloaded in the All Photos folder.

Once your wallpaper is selected, tap the Use as Wallpaper button. You don’t need to alter the perspective settings or zoom in — just tap Set Home Screen.

When you return to your home screen, your folders and dock should blend seamlessly into the background — as if they’re not actually there. If you’re happy with the result, it’s time to move on and create your “invisible” folders.

4. Create an ‘invisible’ icon

Start by downloading App Icons Free from the App Store by following the link above. Once it is installed, open it up and tap the Create Icon button, then choose Go to Link. Select the Photo option, then select the solid wallpaper you just downloaded and tap Choose.

App Icons Free will prompt you to enter a URL; just hit the space bar, then tap Install and Install again. The app will now take you into Safari and present you with a shortcut icon; tap the share button at the bottom of the screen, then tap Add to Home Screen.

Replace the shortcut’s label with a period, then tap Add. You should now have a blank app icon on your home screen. It may be difficult to find this after setting your wallpaper, but if you look closely, you should be able to see the period label. Otherwise the shortcut should be the last icon on the page.

5. Create an ‘invisible’ folder

Now that you have your ‘invisible’ icon, you can drag another app onto it — one you want to hide — to create a folder. You can them move the app to a second page within the folder (leaving the invisible icon on the first page) to prevent it from appearing on the home screen.

Add all the apps you wish to hide into this folder, avoiding the first page.

6. Remove the folder’s label

You ensure your new folder cannot be seen, you now need to remove its label. First, copy the blank space between the brackets from the tweet below, then edit the folder’s label and paste this in. Press the home button to save it.

#QuickTip: To remove folder names on your iOS home screen, copy the blank space in-between these brackets [⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀] and paste it as the name

That’s it! You should now have an invisible folder on your home screen to hide your apps and shortcuts. We recommend leaving it at the end of a page — not in the middle — to ensure it stays inconspicuous.

If you have trouble with any of the steps above, you can see them demonstrated in the video below:

How to “hide” an app on your iphone or ipad

You don’t need to be an obsessive Home screen organizer to realize that your iPhone and iPad apps get cluttered all over the place despite your best efforts to bring some order to your Home screen. iOS and iPadOS 14 help you curate the Home screen just the way you like by letting you make specific app pages invisible. Follow along as we show you how to hide Home screen app pages from plain sight without deleting any apps or filling them in folders.

Messy Home screens are driving us crazy

Only a fraction of the apps we download to our iPhones and iPads from the App Store get used on a regular basis. And as the number of apps we download skyrockets over time, so does the desire to keeping our Home screens organized. You want to be able to get to that app you need right now, without hunting for it across multiple app pages on the Home screen.

I never liked scrolling through multiple pages of apps. I keep my most-often used apps meticulously arranged on page 1. All the other apps I file in categorized folders. Of course, these folders end up being scattered across multiple pages. Despite my best efforts to bring order to Home screen chaos, I still have like fifteen pages of apps on my Home screen.

It’s been driving me crazy, but iOS and iPadOS 14 address this particular pain point.

iOS and iPadOS 14 come to the rescue

In iOS and iPadOS 14, you can tidy up your Home screen by hiding app pages at will.

This is an essential Home screen organization feature for iOS users that was first previewed during Apple’s virtual WWDC 2020 keynote that was held on June 22, 2020.

If you’re struggling for the best way to arrange apps, why not hide some of the Home screen app pages you rarely use? This won’t delete any of your apps — when you hide a Home screen page full of apps, you can still open an app via the system-wide search feature or App Library.

In order to take advantage of this feature, you need a compatible device powered by the iOS or iPadOS 14 software or newer and a few minutes of your time. Follow along with our tutorial embedded below for step-by-step instructions explaining how to hide Home screen app pages

How to hide Home screen app pages

Follow these steps if you want to hide Home screen app pages from plain sight:

  1. Enter jiggle mode by tapping and holding a blank area on the Home screen until the icons start moving like they’re doing a dance. Alternatively, tap and hold any app on the Home screen, then choose Edit Home Screen from the popup menu.
  2. When in jiggle mode, tap the app page dots near the screen bottom just above the Dock.
  3. You will now see a birds-eye overview of all the Home screen app pages on the device, with each Home screen thumbnail having a little checkmark below it. Tap these checkmarks to toggle off any Home screen app pages that you wish to temporarily hide from plain sight.
  4. Hit Done near the top-right corner to finish making changes to your Home screen pages or press the Home button on devices without Face ID.
  5. Tap Done one more time to exit out of jiggle mode.

And that’s all there’s to it!

Your messy Home screen should be a lot cleaner now, and you’ve only spent a few minutes deciding which app pages to hide. As we mentioned, when you hide app pages from the Home screen, you still can use those apps, as well as find them via Search and App Library.

The dots above the Dock show how many pages you have

If you come to the conclusion that this type of Home screen organization isn’t for you after all, no worries — all you have to do is check the app pages that you wish to unhide.

Unfortunately, you cannot rearrange app pages themselves which would’ve been terrific. Also, the App Library page is mandatory and cannot be hidden. And as far as hiding every Home screen goes, you must to have at least one Home screen visible.

Resetting your Home screen layout

This is an awesome Home screen organization feature, but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you prefer to manually manage the Home screen layout, more power to you.

But what if you want to move all those app icons back to where they were?

You can either do it one by one or have iOS reset your Home screen app icon layout to factory settings with just a few taps in Settings → General → Reset → Reset Home Screen Layout.
