How to organize your iphone photos with albums

The Photos app makes it easy to keep your photos and videos organized and accessible. It can even give you a curated view of your photos, and the built-in Search intelligence can help you quickly find what you’re looking for.

Photos is organized into Library, For You, Albums, and Search. When you turn on iCloud Photos, your collection is kept up to date across your devices. And with the advanced search features, you can easily find photos based on a person, place, object, or event.

Before you begin

  • Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
  • Set up iCloud on all your devices.
  • Make sure that you’re signed in with the same Apple ID.

Library

Enjoy a curated view of your moments in the Library tab, then browse by years, months, days, or all photos. You’ll also see Live Photos and videos come to life as you scroll and browse.

  • All Photos: See your complete photo library including screenshots and duplicate photos in the order they were taken.

With iOS 14, you can filter what gets displayed, so it’s easier to browse through your Library. For example, you can choose to show only photos or only videos. To filter what you see:

  1. Tap the Library tab, then tap the More button in the upper-right corner.
  2. Tap Filter, then choose an option.

Live Photos and videos won’t autoplay in Photos when Low Power Mode is enabled.

For You

In the For You tab, Photos searches for your photos and videos to find moments that stand out, then presents them in collections called Memories. You can also see Shared Album activity, get ideas for adding effects to select photos, and find Sharing Suggestions, which are collections of photos you can share.

These types of categories make managing your photos easier, but the best thing you can do, especially if you’re a prolific iPhone photographer, is to create new albums with personalized names.

Running out of space? Here’s the easiest way to get photos and videos off your iOS device and the best way to organize them.

How to organize your iphone photos with albums

My partner recently asked me to share my digital photo albums so that we both have access to them. Before I shared them, I wanted to make sure all the photos were saved to the same location and clearly labeled. It had been about two years since I thoroughly organized my collection. A big part of the job would be getting images off my iPhone, saving them to the same file-syncing and storage service I use for the rest of my images and making sure they were clearly labeled.

I had put off the task for a few weeks, when suddenly my iPhone and Mac began shoving notifications in my face about nearing the cap on my iCloud storage. All signs were pointing me toward a photo cleanup project, and the first step would be to deal with the pictures on my iPhone.

I went through the process and distilled it down to this guide for how to get photos off your iPhone and organize them.

How to Get Photos off an iPhone (or Any iOS Device)

Depending on where you store and organize photos, you have a few options for how to get images off your device.

    Option 1: Use iCloud

If you use iCloud as the main place where you store photos, all you really need to do is make sure your iCloud account is backing up and syncing your data.

For an iOS device, go to Settings > Photos > iCloud Photos and enable the setting.

Now, your device will upload all your photos to iCloud any time your device connects to Wi-Fi and the battery is charged. With iOS 11 or later, the sync can happen over a cellular connection, too.

When you create an iCloud account, you get 5GB of storage to start. If you need more, Apple sells it in increments starting at 50GB for $0.99 per month, which is very reasonable. You can share storage with others by using Apple’s Family Sharing plan.

Option 2: Use a Backup and Syncing Service

Option 2 is effectively the same as Option 1, only using a different online service. So, instead of using iCloud, we’ll discuss other file syncing and storage options, such as Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive.

    1. Choose a file-syncing and storage service, create an account, and download the service’s iOS app.
    2. Sign in and look for a setting called something like Camera Upload, Automatic Upload, or Backup & Sync. This setting automatically uploads photos from your device to the service. Turn it on.
    3. Once the setting is on and your images have been backed up, you can delete them from your iPhone.
    4. To delete pictures from your iPhone, open the Apple Photos app and choose Photos from the bottom menu. Tap Select at the top right. Tap each image you want to delete, then tap the trash can icon in the bottom right corner. Now go to Albums > Recently Deleted. Choose Select and then Delete All.

Option 3: Download Photos to a Computer and Back Up

The third and final option I want to offer involves uploading your photos and videos to a computer first and then moving them to a backup and storage service. It’s the best solution for people who prefer a hands-on approach.

It’s the method I used, because I like seeing my pictures on a larger computer and deciding which ones to keep or throw away before I move them to a backup service. It also lets me make quick edits, such as cropping and color correction during the process.

    1. Connect your phone to your computer with your Lightning-to-USB charging cable. Note that while you can transfer images wirelessly with AirDrop, the cable is faster and gives you the option to delete the photos from your phone automatically once they move over to the computer.
    2. Launch your preferred image-editing program. If you’re a Mac user, the default here would be the Photos app that came with your Mac. Windows includes a similar Photos app, and more-pro-minded photography buffs may want to use Adobe Lightroom on either platform.
    3. Import the image. Most software that supports importing photos offers an option to delete all pictures from your phone once the transfer is complete. This can be a little dangerous, however, in case the import doesn’t complete successfully. I prefer importing, and then only deleting the image files from the phone after I’m sure the import completed.
    4. Now that you have your photos in your image-editing program, you can easily see them and decide whether you want to delete or edit any.
    5. The last step is to drag and drop the images into the backup solution of your choice, whether it’s Box, Flickr, IDrive, or something else. An alternative to cloud storage is to use a local, cloud-connected storage device such as the Western Digital My Cloud or the SanDisk ibi.

Depending on what service you use and which utilities you’ve installed on the computer, you may find that a photo importer tool pops up automatically to help you bring photos from your phone to somewhere else. For example, if you’ve installed Google Drive’s Backup and Sync utility, that can be set to automatically save image files onto the cloud.

    Tips for Organizing Photos

Here are some tips for organizing your images, plus an important question to ask yourself about what kind of tools and services best meet your photo-storage needs.

Photo Hosting or More-General Cloud Storage?

When organizing photos, the biggest question to ask yourself may be whether to store and back them up using a general cloud storage service or a photo-specific hosting site.

There are several excellent photo hosting services, including Flickr, ImageShack, Lightroom and SmugMug. These types of services generally come with tools specific to organizing and finding images. For example, you arrange images into “albums” rather than folders and subfolders, and some services recommend albums automatically based on the date or location where you shot the pictures.

Photo-hosting services often have facial recognition, so the next time you need to search for photos of a particular person, you can find them quickly without having to remember where they are. And it’s not just faces: Flickr and others can detect and tag specific object types, such as tree, mountain, building, or dog, and show you all images that include those objects. You can also add your own identifying keyword tags for organization. Google Photos has some neat automatic suggestions for color correction and stitching together photos taken in quick succession to make a video that resembles stop-motion animation.

Once you take a photo with iPhone Camera, your taken photo will be saved into the iPhone Camera Roll by default. Actually, you can get the downloaded photos in the Camera Roll too. It is hard to find the photo you need in hundreds of similar pictures. Many people like to create albums to organize photos in different types. However, you still need to rearrange photos in iPhone albums to keep everything in order.

Rearrange Photos in an iPhone Album

It’s OK if you put images in multiple albums. It will cost no extra storage space. In another word, no matter how many albums you have created, the total taken up storage space will not change. Step 1Open the Photos app. Select the iPhone album you want to rearrange.

Step 2Tap “Select” on the top right corner. Choose the photos you want to move.

Step 3Tap “Delete” followed by “Remove from Album” to move photos to a new album.

Step 4Go back to the original album. Choose the photo you want to hide. Tap “Share” on the bottom left. Choose “Hide Photo” to move photos to an album and delete from Camera Roll on iPhone.

How to organize your iphone photos with albums

Most of us have a lot of photos and even videos on our devices. So keeping those organized can help us find and share what we want much faster. One way to organize items in Photos is to create albums, and you can do this on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. But what happens if your albums end up getting out of control too?

This is where folders come in. The difference between albums and folders in Photos is that albums contain your photos while folders contain your albums. It’s sort of a hierarchy structure, if you will.

To help you organize your photos and albums further, we’ll show you how to create folders in Photos on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Create a folder on iPhone and iPad

Open the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad and follow these steps to create a folder.

    1) Select the Albums tab at the bottom.

    2) Tap Edit on the top right.

    3) Tap the plus sign on the top left and pick New Folder.

    4) Give your folder a name and tap Save.

    5) You’ll see your new folder appear on your My Albums screen. Tap Done.

How to organize your iphone photos with albums

As you’ll see with the steps for Mac below, moving albums into folders is much easier on macOS than iOS. Unfortunately, you cannot simply drag albums into folders on iOS.

To store albums in a folder on iPhone or iPad, you’ll need to create an album inside the folder.

    1) Select the folder and tap Edit at the top.

    2) Tap the plus sign and choose New Album.

    3) Give your album a name and then optionally add photos to it right away. Otherwise, you can tap Done and add photos and videos to it later.

How to organize your iphone photos with albums

Hopefully Apple will update the Photos app on iOS to make adding albums to folders as easy as it is on Mac; by simply dragging them.

    Create a folder on Mac

Open the Photos app on your Mac and then do one of the following to create a folder.

    1) Click File > New Folder from the menu bar or right-click My Albums in the sidebar and choose New Folder.

    2) Give your folder a name and hit Return.

How to organize your iphone photos with albums

It’s as easy as that! Now you have a new folder waiting for some albums. Just drag albums into the folder you created.

Another way to create a folder is to use the albums you want to put in it.

    1) Select an album in the sidebar.

    Wrapping it up

Albums are great for holding related pictures and videos while folders are ideal for holding related albums. So if you need to get a handle on your items in the Photos app and organize them better, try creating some folders.

What are your thoughts on the Photos folder feature? Are you going to use it on iOS or Mac to organize your albums? Let us know!

It’s easy to clutter up the Photos app with various photo albums. It could be something you created years ago and forgot, or something an app created for you. Here’s how to delete photo albums on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Delete Photo Albums on iPhone and iPad

The Photos app on the iPhone and iPad makes it easy to add, organize, and delete albums. Plus, you can delete multiple albums at the same time from the album-editing screen.

When you delete a photo album, it doesn’t delete any photos that are inside the album. The photos will continue to be available in the Recents album and in other albums.

To start the process, open the “Photos” app on your iPhone or iPad and then navigate to the “Albums” tab.

You’ll find all of your albums in the “My Albums” section at the top of the page. Here, tap the “See All” button found in the top-right corner.

You’ll now see a grid of all your albums. Simply tap the “Edit” button from the top-right corner.

You’ll now be in the album-editing mode, similar to the Home screen editing mode. Here, you can drag and drop albums to rearrange them.

To delete an album, simply tap the red “-” button found in the top-left corner of an album image.

Then, from the pop-up message, confirm the action by choosing the “Delete Album” button. You can delete any album other than the “Recents” and the “Favorites” albums.
