Unless you’re a Mac user who’s terribly out of the loop, you probably know that Siri has arrived on the latest version of Apple flagship desktop OS: macOS Sierra. Thankfully, Siri can be easily turned on and off or configured to your liking.

There are quite a few things you can do with Siri, which has made its way onto the Apple TV and even the Apple Watch. Siri on macOS works much like it does on the iPhone, so if you are familiar with using it there, then you’ll be right at home.

When you first set up Sierra, you’re presented with the opportunity to enable Siri. If you do this, you can later disable it, which we’ll talk about shortly.

Once you’re using your new macOS desktop, Siri can be accessed using Option+Space or by clicking the Siri button in the Dock.

Siri also appears in the menu bar, so you can safely remove it from your Dock if you don’t want it taking up valuable space.

Once you activate Siri, it will patiently wait for your first command.

As always, you can utilize Siri to answer life’s most important and pressing questions.

Configuring Siri is as simple as opening its preference panel from the System Preferences.

With the Siri preferences open, you’ve got quite a few options, but the one you may be most interested in is the “Enable Siri” option. You can also change the language, Siri’s voice, and remove it from menu bar.

You can also change the keyboard shortcut, or even completely disable it.

When Siri is disabled, it will remain on the Dock but disappear from the menu bar. If you try clicking the Siri icon on the Dock, you can quickly enable Siri again from the following dialog.

If Siri doesn’t reappear on the menu bar when you re-enable it, try unchecking and rechecking the “Show Siri in menu bar” option in the Siri preference panel.

Using, disabling, and configuring Siri on macOS is just as easy as that, so you don’t need to feel like you’re stuck with it or confined to the default settings.

No doubt, if you’re a Siri fan, it will be a welcome addition to macOS. It has the potential to make short work out of looking up facts, current events, or even searching for files.

Siri has arrived on macOS Sierra, and with it a new feature that allows you to pin widgets to the Today column in the notification center.

This feature is very simple and useful, so let’s take a few minutes and show you how it works.

Normally, when you ask Siri anything on macOS, it shows you the results in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Note, however, there’s a a plus “+” button in the top-right corner of many Siri search results.

Remember, whenever you see the plus, you can add it to your notification center.

When you click that button, the item will be pinned to the Today pane in your notification center. To access your notifications, click the three lines in the top-right screen corner.

The pinned item will remain there until you remove it, or you can rearrange it so that more pertinent widgets are at the top.

If you do later want to remove a widget, simply click the “X” in it’s top-right corner.

You can pin all kinds of things to your notification center, including web searches….

…as well as notes.

You can even ask Siri to show you one specific note or reminder list and pin that.

Not everything you search for can be pinned. But there’s enough that your notification center might soon be crammed with the stuff that is important to you.

You’re probably not going to save every single pinnable Siri search result, but there’s likely to be at least one or two things that you always want to keep in your notification center.

The convenience of being able to at least pin your reminders or a reminder, certain web results, or have the score of the ball game at a glance, does make certain repetitive tasks much easier. You don’t have to open the corresponding app, simply take a glance and that’s it.

So, now you can start saving your Siri searches and hopefully your life and daily routine just became a lot easier.

After months of beta testing, Apple last week pushed the final version of macOS Sierra to compatible iMacs, MacBooks, Mac Pros and Mac Minis. The new OS marks another stage in the Mac’s evolution, and introduces a certain well-known digital assistant to the desktop too. Read on for New Atlas’ macOS Sierra review.

That headline feature – the arrival of Siri in macOS (no longer OS X) – is likely to be what you notice first and what you spend most of your time playing around with once you’ve got Sierra installed. But how helpful you find Siri to be depends on what you use your Mac for and how comfortable you are chatting with an AI entity living inside your laptop or desktop.

It’s not really something we’ve found ourselves turning to all that much, but it has some nice tricks up its sleeve (such as the option to pin Siri results to the Notification Center pane). Unlike Cortana in Windows 10, there’s no text entry fallback for Siri, which can come in handy if you’re in a coffee shop or just not in a very talkative mood.

There’s no doubt the list of what Siri can do in macOS Sierra is impressive: everything from turning Bluetooth on and off to finding files on your machine (plus all the usual web search features you’ll know from iOS). We just haven’t used it much since installing the first beta edition back in June.

Aside from Siri, using Sierra is a smooth and pleasing experience, as you might expect from an Apple product that’s been refined and evolved over so many years. Visual and interface tweaks are kept down to a minimum, and it takes some digging around before you uncover all of the new features on offer.

I wasn’t able to test one of them, Auto Unlock with the Apple Watch, because I didn’t have an Apple timepiece to hand. We’re sure it works as advertised though, and based on our experience unlocking Chromebooks with a trusted Android phone, it’s going to make logging in much more painless. Smart move, Apple.

Going beyond the desktop

One upgrade that is noticeable is the extra iCloud integration, an area Apple can’t really ignore if it wants to keep up with the Googles and Microsofts of this world. macOS Sierra has the option to automatically sync your desktop and Documents folder across iCloud, and move older files to the cloud to free up space locally.

Both features get a big thumbs up from us and work very smoothly (though I only have one Mac and one iPhone to assess them on). They are also dependent on you having enough iCloud storage space free.

The option to shift older files to iCloud is part of a new storage optimization section in macOS Sierra, and it’s combined with other handy tools, such as settings to clean up junk files that are no longer needed, erase local copies of iTunes movies and shows you’ve watched, and empty the trash automatically.

All very useful, and together with the introduction of Siri, a sign that macOS is now about way more than just the local machine you’re currently working on. We should also mention the new Universal Clipboard that lets you copy and paste items between macOS and iOS 10 devices with ease, a feature we’ve already made good extensive of.

Sierra is by no means a huge leap forward for Apple’s desktop OS – those days are probably gone for good – but it comes with some genuinely smart bells and whistles that most Mac owners are going to approve of.

It’s easier to find what you need with Siri, it works better with other Macs and Apple devices, and it does more work in the background to keep out of your way – improvements that it’s hard to grumble about or find fault with.

macOS Sierra apps

Apple continues to insist on updating all of its desktop applications at the same time as macOS (which seems strange to us, but what do we know?). As on iOS 10, Photos and Music get the biggest upgrades, though Safari has learned a useful new trick too.

That’s picture-in-picture mode, so you can keep an eye on the video content of your choice while you’re supposed to be working. In operation it’s slick and stable, with the only problem being it can be hard to find.

While a PiP button appears on Vimeo clips, on YouTube it’s hidden behind not one but two right-click menus. Meanwhile the likes of Netflix and Hulu don’t have it at all at the time of writing. Still, it’s early days, and if you can actually find the option then it works well.

Back to Photos, which gets all of the upgrades we saw in iOS 10: smart searches, face recognition, and the Memories feature that automatically combines your best pictures into highlights packages based around particular times and dates.

As we said about the changes in the mobile OS, it finally feels like Apple knows what it’s doing with photos – and it’s about time. The smart searching feature work really well, so you can pick out sunsets or cats or your favorite people instantly, and iCloud Photo Library (introduced last year) is more intuitive and sensible than the old Photo Stream approach.

Having let Photos loose on our own snaps, the app did a decent job of getting everything sorted around particular events, though admittedly it didn’t have much to work with. There are tons of apps and services that will do similar jobs for you now, and while Apple’s solution is fine, it hardly stands out in a crowded field – it’s just convenient, if you’re using macOS and iOS.

We’re not big fans of automatic photo curation, Apple-made or otherwise, but there are plenty of manual options to make use of, and the smart sorting really does prove its worth once you get used to it.

As for Apple Music, it basically just gets a new lick of paint, but it’s an impressive one. Everything is clearer and more well presented, although the central foundations of iTunes continue to look rather creaky.

The Sierra difference

In these days of free, incremental OS updates, there’s not as much to talk about in reviews like this as there used to be. If your Mac can run Sierra (models from late 2009 onwards) then you’re of course going to install the new software and most likely going to love it too.

The addition of Siri is the big change, and even if you don’t feel inclined to spend a lot of your time chatting to your computer, it’s one more reason to stick with Apple across laptops, desktops, tablets and phones (note a similar expansion of Google Now and Cortana in recent times).

We haven’t made much use of Siri over the last three months but Apple’s engineers have undoubtedly done a good job with its implementation, and some of the tricks it’s capable of are genuinely useful rather than gimmicky.

The iCloud upgrades – even more useful than Siri, in our experience – are also signs of a changing computing landscape, where the machine sitting on your desk is just one part of a larger experience controlled over the web. Google’s Chrome OS project is looking less crazy with each passing year.

A really strong upgrade this time around from Apple then. There’s not a lengthy list of new features, but what additions there have been are all smart and well implemented, and it plugs some of the most obvious gaps to once again go head-to-head against Windows, Cortana and OneDrive.

Apple’s annual developers’ conference showcased updates to all of its operating systems, plus overhauls for some of its own apps.

iOS 10

On the heels of the beta release of iOS 9.3.3, it gets a facelift for iOS 10, with increased 3D Touch integration . Updates include pickup-to-wakeup, in- notification responses, more detailed notifications, faster access to apps and widgets from the lock screen and live video in notifications.

Here are the coolest new features of iOS 10 (pictures)

Siri has quickly lost ground to smarter intelligent assistants, and Apple’s playing catch up with a Siri software developer’s kit (SDK) that programmers will be able to use to integrate the voice assistant into their apps. That means capabilities like in-app search, voice messaging controls, photo searches, payments. you get the idea.

Look for improved autocorrect and Siri interaction, thanks to Apple’s own deep-learning technology.

Apple also plays catch-up with Google by rolling out object and scene recognition for Photos, and using AI to cluster photos by relevance; the latter resides in a new Memories tab. It can make slideshow movies with sound automatically.

HomeKit, Apple’s developer tools for building smart-home support into apps, also needs to catch up with Google.

This includes Apple finally creating a HomeKit app of its own, called Home. It provides control over devices and remote access. It works on the Watch, too.

Calling improvements include an extension API for filtering out phone spam, and the addition of VoIP calling.

Lastly, Messages now support rich content (such as link expansion and video building), bigger emoji with predictions, an in-app camera, scalable text, invisible ink and handwriting and sketches. (Also, “emojifiable” and “emojification” seem to be words now.)

Developers now have an API for Messages, too, called iMessage apps, which will have a dedicated app drawer. Think in-message payments or third-party stickers.

The company emphasized its end-to-end encryption and discussed its work on differential privacy — maintaining personal privacy but understanding that crowdsourced information isn’t private.

Look for the public beta in July, and free upgrade this fall. First check to see if your device will support it.

For the iPad, Apple launched a new app to learn to code, Swift Playgrounds; it will be available for free via the App store in the fall.

Many more operating systems

Wave goodbye to roman numerals: OS X has been rebranded as MacOS; this version is dubbed Sierra. It supports auto-unlock using Apple Watch proximity, a shared clipboard with iOS, better storage management using iCloud Drive, Apple Pay (as long as you have an iPhone), Tabs everywhere and picture in picture.

  • TL;DR – Big Sur update, worth it? Worth it if you’re happy on Mojave on iMac?

So, any compelling reason to update to Big Sur? For me, I haven’t found any from Apple’s marketing pitch on their website. Have you? I’m using a 2017 27” iMac 18,3 on Mojave 10.14.6 and working well. Here are my thoughts on Apple’s advertised benefits:

    • “Doing it all, in all new ways” – is this ever a good thing?
    • “Bold new experience. Same Mac magic” –
      • “Unparalleled power” – how will BS give me more power?
      • “Legendary ease of use” – if it’s legendary, don’t I already have it?
      • “Limitless creativity” – never been accused of being a creative, is therapy/coaching involved?
      • “New design…more…things you love about Mac” – anyone care to elaborate what those things might be that I already love? And if there are any, don’t I have them already?
      • “Streamlined apps…full-height sidebars…refreshed toolbars…clean new design…content…front and center” – Whoo! Whoo! So something different to get used to for what enhanced purpose other than to be different?
      • “Refreshed Dock…getting to favorite apps easier” – Er, OK. Not sure how a design change makes getting to something easier, but whatev.
      • “New uniform shape for app icons adds consistency…letting personality of Mac shine through” – OMG, some marketing writer might just have seen an angel, or found some acid leftover from the ’70’s. Not sure I want, nor need, to see my Mac’s personality, but I would like a better keyboard. Doubt the app icon shape affects that however.
      • “Control Center for Mac” – admittedly handy, as it is for iOS and iPadOS, but I use the Control Center only to turn on/off the flashlight…not applicable to the iMac.
      • “Notification Center” – In using MacOS and its predecessors since 2008, I’ve yet to use NC for anything.
      • “Redesigned widgets come in THREE DIFFERENT SIZES” (emphasis mine) – Like Notification Center, I’ve not used widgets in years, on any Apple device.
    • “Safari has…brand-new customizations,…battery life…privacy” – OK then, 1 for 3 (privacy) of value to me, but I use a VPN for everything so likely unneeded. And I mostly use the DuckDuckGo browser. Also in fairness, I have most if not all of these features in Safari v14.0.2 on Mojave so not even a Big Sur thing.
      • “Customizable start page” – oh be still, my heart.
      • “Safari extension in the App Store” – as opposed to?
      • “Improved tab design” – too many designers, too few substantive improvements. The page preview is admittedly a nice feature but I already have it on Mojave with Safari 14.0.2.
      • “Translation” – nice feature. I might be able to think of an actual need to do this. Or not.
      • “Password monitoring” – OK…if it works…all the time…every time.
      • “Privacy Report” – good feature, and a step in the right direction.
      • “Fastest desktop browser” – Er, OK. I don’t see any practical difference on my current set up, hard to believe it’d be different in BS but maybe so.
      • “Improved power efficiency” – don’t care…it’s an iMac. It’s plugged in. All the time. Always.
    • “Messages on Mac…all the tools…to stay in control of the conversation” – Really? It’s a text messaging front end. What conversation control am I lacking in my life?
      • “Pin conversations, inline replies, group photos, mentions, trending images, Memoji” – Oh boy. Actually, ho hum. No interest for my needs.
    • “Redesigned maps” – new ways to navigate, curated Guides, cycling routes, EV charging stops, immersive 3D look-around, airport interiors, mall interiors all nice features, not sufficiently compelling to move to BS. And both my EV’s show charging stops very well. And I’m not going anywhere anyway until a much higher vaccination percentage is achieved.
    • “And even more” – yeah, sorta.
      • Photo editing – nice, will likely never use.
      • AirPods device switching – don’t have/want AirPods so no use.
      • HomeKit Video notifications – nice, but HomeKit rarely works for me in the base case on any Apple device.
      • Listen Now – um, ok. I’m more of a ripped-from-CD-to-iTunes or Spotify streaming fan than a buy-a-tune-at-a-time-from-Apple listener.
      • Faster updates – um, ok. Don’t these usually happen in the wee hours of the morning anyway?
      • Deeper web knowledge for Siri – Siri has been the weakest of the available voice-actuated helper apps, and still seems to be that way on iOS even on v14.3. I’ve not used Siri on any device other than my iPhone where she continues to disappoint, and never on the iMac, and likely won’t, so not a factor in BS adoption.

So again, for my iMac and needs, I’m not seeing Big Sur as a compelling update. From the many of you in Mac-land who have updated, what am I overlooking?

Apple’s Find My technology is a lifesaver when it works, enabling you to locate and potentially retrieve lost or stolen devices. It’s not perfect, even with the addition of the Find My Network, which drafts other nearby Apple devices to relay the location of a lost device, but it’s a heck of a lot better than nothing. Part of the problem is that you have to notice that a device is missing before you can bring Find My into play to see where it might be.

No longer, thanks to the brilliant new Notify When Left Behind feature of iOS 15. Why wait until you notice that your AirPods aren’t in your bag when the Find My app can notify you shortly after you leave their immediate vicinity? Even if that means talking your way back onto an airplane to retrieve your AirPods from the seatback pocket, that’s better than discovering your loss an hour or two later.

Notify When Left Behind doesn’t support all Apple devices—you know that you’re leaving your 27-inch iMac behind whenever you leave home, and HomePods tend to stay put. But it does work with the iPhone, iPad, AirPods, AirTag, and Mac laptops. Somewhat surprisingly left out is the Apple Watch, perhaps because Apple assumes it would always be either charging or on your wrist.

To set up Notify When Left Behind for your devices, follow these steps:

    1. In the Find My app, tap Devices at the bottom of the screen to show all your devices.
    2. Tap the name of the device for which you want to enable Notify When Left Behind.
    3. Scroll up to reveal the Notifications section, and tap Notify When Left Behind.
    4. Enable the Notify When Left Behind switch, then tap Done.
    5. Repeat for each desired device, switching to the Items screen to include AirTags.

“Wait a second,” you’re thinking. “How can your iPhone tell you that you’ve left it behind if it’s not with you?” Apple is one step ahead of you. The key is your Apple Watch—if you leave your iPhone on your desk at work when going home for the day, your Apple Watch will alert you 5 or 10 minutes later. It may be annoying to go back for it, but it’s better than not realizing until you get home.

Your next thought is probably, “Won’t it be annoying if my iPhone tells me that I’ve left various devices behind even when I meant to leave them there?” Apple has an answer to that as well. As you can see in the Notify When Left Behind screen above, there’s a Notify Me, Except At section to which you can add places that it’s acceptable to leave your devices. Find My even suggests your Home location; just tap the + button to add it. If you tap New Location, you can scroll the map to any location, press and hold to drop a pin, and then choose a small (300 feet), medium (800 feet), or large (1400 feet) radius to ignore. When you add a custom location, Find My asks if it should apply to just the current device or to all your devices and items.

When you actually leave a device behind, you’ll get a notification on your iPhone. Tap it to see where you left the item, which may be all the reminder you need. If you tap Continue to open the Find My app, you can tap Directions to be directed to where the device is or tap Don’t Notify Me Here if the location is a place where you don’t mind leaving your devices.

That’s all there is to Notify When Left Behind. It’s the perfect example of a feature that works quietly in the background to help you avoid problems.

Általában, amikor a Siri-tól bármit kérdez a MacOS-on, akkor az eredményeket a képernyő jobb felső sarkában mutatja.
