How to play windows 10 store games offline

To enable your Windows 10 device to play games from the Microsoft Store while offline:

  1. Launch the Microsoft Store app.
  2. Click the menu icon in the top-right corner (“…”).
  3. Click the “Settings” link.
  4. Under “Offline Permissions,” turn the toggle button to “On.” Follow the prompts which appear.

Applies to

Games from the Microsoft Store won’t necessarily run offline without some prior action on your part. The Microsoft Store requires you to nominate a single device as your “offline” device, which can be used to run apps and games with restricted licenses without an Internet connection.

Unless you’ve set a device to be your offline device, you may find you can’t launch games until you’re back online. Since only one device can be used offline at any time, you’ll need to think carefully about which of your Windows products should be used for mobile gaming. You can’t just change the setting when you switch device either – Microsoft allows only three changes in each calendar year.

The easiest way to assign an offline device is through the Microsoft Store itself. Launch the Store app on the device you want to use offline. When it opens, click the three dots menu button (“…”) in the top-right corner, and then click “Settings.”

Scroll down to the “Offline Permissions” heading and turn the toggle button to the “On” permission. You’ll see a warning notifying you of how many offline device changes you have remaining. Once you confirm the prompt, your current device will become your offline device – if you’d previously assigned this status to another PC, it will now be revoked and you won’t be able to play games offline.

Not every game is affected by this setting. It typically applies to games you’ve purchased which identify as PC or Xbox titles, not the simpler mobile-style games which can also be found in the Store.

To make sure you can play your favourite titles offline, you should launch them once while connected to the Internet. This will ensure the necessary licensing information is available on your device for when you go offline. You should then be able to run the game at any time, with or without a connection, and enjoy gaming on the go.

This is sorta helpful. But the store doesn’t seem to have the version I’m used to and I keep seeing stuff about Xbox and I don’t have Xbox. I just want the game I had in Windows 7. This change to Windows 10 has screwed up all my personal settings and taken away the games I loved. I want back Mahjongg, Spider Solitaire, FreeCell, Solitaire, Hearts, the mine game (forgot name) Purble Palace. all the games that came with Windows 7 that I played for free when I was had no internet access.

When I go to download the free games, it says something about purchases. I keep backing out. I’m not wanting to buy anything. I just want to play the games that help me stay calm when I get super-stressed, like Win10 has done to me.

How to play windows 10 store games offline

Microsoft announced it has made some significant backend improvements to the Windows 10 Store that technically allow for offline play — but the number of hoops you’ll need to jump through to enable this feature remains significant. Offline play is one aspect of the Windows Store that’s lagged well behind competitors like Steam or even services like Origin, so it’s good to see Microsoft making an effort to offer this feature.

There are more details on how to enable this capability over at the Xbox support site, and you’ll want to read about the capabilities and restrictions of the mode before you start fussing with it. The first thing to know is that unlike Steam, which allows offline play from any device associated with your account, the Windows 10 Store only allows you to have one designated offline device — and you can only change which device is designated three times a year. To set an account to offline, perform the following steps:

  • Make sure that you’re online.
  • Check that your device has the latest Windows updates: Go to Start > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update and see if any relevant updates are available.
  • Open the Store. You’ll be prompted to sign in if you haven’t already.
  • Select the Me icon (this is your profile picture).
  • Select Settings, and then under Offline Permissions, make sure that the toggle is set to On.

Once you’ve completed this step, you’ll need to launch each title individually that you want to play in offline mode. You will need to sign into your Xbox Live account from within each title, though it’s not clear why this step has to be performed. Once it is, however, you can run titles while remaining offline (provided you properly followed the steps above). While it’s great to see Microsoft adding this feature, the process of actually playing offline is cumbersome at best.

How to play windows 10 store games offline

You can play great games like Rise of the Tomb Raider… and I’m sure there’s others. Probably.

If Microsoft actually wants to compete with Steam, it’s going to need to do better than offering poor imitations of a better process. Adding capabilities is good, but they need to be at least as easy to use on Microsoft’s own platform as they are on a third-party utility. Most games can be played offline through Steam by simply setting the store to offline mode. There are exceptions, and games do need to be launched at least once before offline mode can be engaged, but this has been the general rule for a number of years.

With the Windows Store, only being allowed to change your “Offline” device three times per year is ridiculously strict — so much so, one suspects that Microsoft’s goal was to offer bullet-point capability for comparisons against Steam, but not to create a feature anyone would actually want to use.

How to play windows 10 store games offline

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Store offers a huge library of games for PC gamers. From games like Forza Horizon to Halo Wars 2 to Resident Evil 7, if you have a Windows 10 PC which can run those games, there really is nothing that can be lost if you choose to buy games from the Store as opposed to Steam or other storefronts – especially if they support Xbox Play Anywhere.
However, with Windows 10 Games from the Store, the Windows Store validates your license to play the game (ie checks whether you are allowed to play the game) on every run. Which means that before you can play one of your purchased games the Store first checks to see that “Hey, does ‘X’ own this game s/he wants to play”.

Obviously, this can pose a problem for users who are constantly on the move and who may have spotty internet service and cannot possibly verify reliably every time they launch the game.
Microsoft introduced an option in the Windows Store to help such users. Dubbed “Offline Permissions”, this allows you to permanently mark your system as one which is your main gaming PC and therefore allows you to take your games offline.

How to play Windows 10 Store games offline

1) Open the Windows 10 Store app and click on your profile pic.
2) Navigate to settings
3) Scroll down to the “Offline Permissions” toggle.
4) Toggle it on.

It is worth noting – and you are warned in the UI – that you can only change this setting three times every year, so if you’re frequently moving PCs, it may be worth having a think about which PC you really want to use as your main gaming machine before you get stuck on the wrong machine.

For running Windows Store games on a PC smoothly, an active Internet connection is required. Fortunately, Microsoft has removed this necessity. It has conceded to the demand of the customers to allow them to play Windows Store games offline. The request was long pending and Microsoft was lagging behind its competitors in this one aspect.

While Microsoft has responded positively to this change it still places certain limitations on main features. For instance,

  1. The player is not allowed to make any additional purchases from the Windows Store when he is offline.
  2. The leaderboards refuse to display your game progress and,
  3. You cannot flaunt your achievements as they are disabled. Until a connection has been re-established with Xbox Live, this information will remain hidden from public view.

Other shortcomings, you can use just a single device as”designated offline device” at a time. Plus, you can only change the designated offline device three times in a year. Switching into offline mode isn’t easy, either. You have to follow a number of steps.
