How to prevent powerpoint from automatically resizing text

In PowerPoint, when you type, you may notice that if you enter more text than can fit inside a text placeholder, the text is automatically resized to a smaller size. This is called AutoFit. In some cases, that might be helpful; in other cases, it might not. Here’s how to turn that off.

The best case for turning off AutoFit is when you know how big you want a box (or any shape) to be on your slide and you know the size you want the text to be. In that case, it makes more sense to let the text overflow the box so that you can edit the text down to a point where it fits.

AutoFit Options

First, let’s take a look at what happens when you type inside a text placeholder. If you type more than will fit in the placeholder, the AutoFit Options button displays. Click on the “AutoFit Options” button to view the available options.

To turn AutoFit off for the active text box and allow text to move beyond the placeholder border, click “Stop Fitting Text to This Placeholder.”

Now, if you type text outside the boundary of the text placeholder, the additional text will be added and the text size will not change.

Now, you can edit the text to the point where it fits in your box. You could also try different fonts and paragraph spacing to see if you can make your text fit rather than just letting PowerPoint resize the font.

AutoCorrect Options

Want to turn off AutoFit globally for all new text placeholders that you add? You can turn AutoFit off via the AutoCorrect options, and there are two ways to get to there.

Option #1: One way is to click on the “AutoFit Options” button when it pops up and then click “Control AutoCorrect Options.”

Option #2: Another way to access the AutoCorrect Options is via File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options.

Whichever method you use to get there, you’ll find yourself in the AutoCorrect window. On the “AutoFormat As You Type” tab, disable the “AutoFit title text to placeholder” and “AutoFit body text to placeholder” checkboxes to turn AutoFit off.

To keep AutoFit on, keep these boxes checked.

1] Change default font in Word

Launch Microsoft Word application click ‘Home’ tab, and then click the Dialog Box Launcher arrow in the Font group.

Here, click the font you want to use then, under ‘Size’, click the size you want to use for body text.

Later, hit the ‘Set As Default’ button.

Now, from the dialog box that appears next, click ‘All documents based on the Normal template’ and hit the ‘OK’ button twice.

2] Change default font in Excel

If you would like to change the default font for Excel Cells, open Excel sheet, switch to ‘Home’ tab and select Dialog Box Launcher arrow in the Font group.

After that, switch to ‘Font’ tab, select Font, Font Style, Font Size, and hit the ‘Ok button.

3] Change default font in PowerPoint

The procedure for changing the default font in Microsoft Office PowerPoint remains the same as seen in Microsoft Word.

Launch PowerPoint application choose ‘Home’ tab and select the Dialog Box Launcher arrow in the Font group.

Next, select the desired font, its size, style, and hit the ‘Ok’ button.

PowerPoint presentation software doesn’t include the same advanced text wrapping feature as other programs in the Microsoft Office suite, but you can achieve a similar effect by using a workaround solution to wrap text around a graphic on a PowerPoint slide. Use the program’s Text Box tool to wrap text around a square graphic, or use the Send to Back feature to wrap text around a graphic with an irregular shape. Because these are both workaround solutions, you may need to experiment with the text to achieve a satisfactory result.

Wrap Text Around a Square Graphic in PowerPoint

Step 1

Open your presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint.

Step 2

Scroll to the slide that contains the picture or clip art graphic around which you want to wrap text. Alternatively, insert a new graphic object in the usual way with the program’s Insert tool.

Step 3

Click to highlight and select the graphic. Drag it to your preferred position on the slide. You can now create a series of text boxes above, below and on one or both sides of the graphic to create the text wrap effect.

Step 4

Click the “Insert” tab on the program’s menu ribbon. Select “Text Box” in the Text group. Click and drag to create the first text box.

Step 5

Click to select and highlight the text box. Drag the handles on each side of the box to extend the box to your preferred width and height. Type or paste text to fill the box.

Step 6

Create additonal text boxes on either side of the graphic and below the object and fill them with text in the same way. Modify the width and height of the boxes so the text fits correctly.

Step 7

Repeat this procedure until you have created enough text boxes around the graphic object to achieve the desired text wrap effect.

Wrap Text Around an Irregular Graphic in PowerPoint

Step 1

Right-click the graphic object on the PowerPoint slide, point to “Send to Back” and then click “Send to Back.”

Step 2

Paste or type text over the graphic object.

Step 3

Click the first line of text where it meets the left edge of the graphic object.

Step 4

Press the “Tab” or “Spacebar” key on your computer keyboard to nudge the text past the right edge of the graphic.

Step 5

Repeat this procedure for each line of text to apply the text wrap effect. You may need to experiment until you’ve achieved an acceptable appearance.

  • When wrapping text around a square graphic, you can use the program’s ruler and gridlines tool to lay out the slide accurately. To do this, click the “View” tab on the menu ribbon and select the “Ruler” and “Gridlines” check boxes in the Show/Hide group. PowerPoint will display a grid and ruler on the slide, helping you to line up the graphic and text box objects correctly.
  • Use the Snap Objects to Grid feature to fix the text boxes and graphic in place on the slide. To do this, right-click an empty area of the slide, select “Grid and Gridlines” and then select the “Snap Objects to Grid” check box in the Snap To group.

Stop Automatic Text Resizing in PowerPoint Placeholders or Text Boxes

You can turn off or stop automatic text resizing in PowerPoint by changing Autofit options. PowerPoint’s Autofit feature is set to automatically resize text in text boxes or placeholders. You can turn off Autofit for all PowerPoint presentations on your computer or for a specific text box or placeholder on a slide.

Stop text resizing in PowerPoint for all presentations

To stop text resizing for all PowerPoint presentations (current and new presentations):

  1. Click the File tab in the Ribbon.
  2. Click Options. A dialog box appears.
  3. Select Proofing in the categories on the left.
  4. Click AutoCorrect Options. A dialog box appears.
  5. Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  6. Deselect (uncheck) the AutoFit title text to placeholder and AutoFit body text to placeholder options.
  7. Click OK twice.

AutoFit title text to placeholder automatically resizes the title text within the title placeholder if the text doesn’t fit.

AutoFit body text to placeholder automatically resizes body text within a body placeholder if the text doesn’t fit.

Turn off text resizing for specific placeholders or text boxes

To turn off or stop text resizing for specific placeholders or text boxes (or shapes with text) in 2013 and later versions:

  1. In Normal View, select the placeholder or text box (or shape with text) by clicking its edge.
  2. Right-click or press Shift + F10 to display the context menu.
  3. Select Format Shape. In 2013 and later versions, a task pane appears.
  4. Click Text Options in the Task Pane.
  5. Select Text Box below Text Options.
  6. Select Do Not Autofit. This will only affect the current object.

You can also set these options in Slide Master View for specific layouts.

To turn off text resizing for specific placeholders or text boxes (or shapes with text) in 2010:

  1. In Normal View, select the placeholder or text box (or shape with text) by clicking on its edge.
  2. Right-click or press Shift + F10 to display the context menu.
  3. Select Format Shape. In 2010, a dialog box appears.
  4. Select Text Box in the left pane.
  5. Select Do Not Autofit.
  6. Click Close.

In Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint when we type text into placeholders, the text automatically adjusts its size to fit the placeholder. A feature called AutoFit shrinks the text as you type. However, if there’s too much text included in your presentation then, the fonts appear too small to be visible for the audience. This can be a troubling experience for users who suffer from a decreased ability to see. So, if you would like to disable this Autofit feature, follow the instructions given below.

Disable Autofit automatic text resizing in PowerPoint

In PowerPoint, when you type more text than what can fit in the text box, the text shrinks automatically to fit the box. This feature, called Autofit. It is turned on by default in text placeholders and prevents text from being truncated.

Launch Microsoft Office PowerPoint application and go to the ‘Insert’ tab.

Select the ‘Text box’ button and draw the text box on the current slide.

Now, right-click inside the text box, and select ‘Size and Position’ option visible under the context menu.

The action when confirmed will open a menu bar on the right. Just expand the Text Box controls.

Select the ‘Do not Autofit’ option seen there.

When done, click inside the text box and type something you would like to add to the slide. You’ll observe that the text that doesn’t fit in the box will overflow when you continue to type. The text will still appear in the presentation, but your presentation will look distorted. So, make sure to edit it to fit before going live with the presentation.

Do not Autofit option gives complete control over the location and size of your text boxes when the text does not fit automatically within the selected text box or placeholder. However, there are some other options that you can also make use of.

These include-

  • Shrink text on overflow – accommodates all the text by reducing the text’s font size within the text box or placeholder.
  • Resize shape to fit text – Retains the text size but increases the size of the text box or placeholder so that the extra text can reflow itself within the resized text box or the placeholder.

Resize the object and the text doesn’t adjust — how annoying!

When you design icons or graphics in PowerPoint, you may need to incorporate text into them. What happens when you need to resize the object? If you’ve run into this problem before you know that text boxes don’t scale with the object as it is resized, even if the text box is grouped with other objects. You have to fiddle with the font size and positioning, which can be painful if you’re dealing with several objects.

How can you make the text resize with the object?

The answer is less complicated than you think, and it can be a real timesaver. Follow these steps to ensure the text resizes automatically with your objects:

Select the “Picture (PNG)” paste option

Click on the text box and copy the text box (Ctrl + C).

  • Paste Special the text box (Ctrl + Alt + V). When you use Paste Special, you will have different paste options. You will want to paste the text as a PNG image.
  • Once you’ve pasted the text, delete the text box and reposition the PNG image in the same position.

    You’ll want to group (Ctrl + G) the PNG image with the other object(s) and then resize the grouped object while holding down the Shiftkey so you maintain the proportion of the object.

    In addition to avoiding future resizing issues, converting text into PNG images in objects helps you to avoid another quirky PowerPoint issue related to template defaults.

    Be careful when you leave text as text boxes

    I recently shared some slides with someone who was aggregating slides from several individuals. When I went to present my portion of the presentation, I discovered that the new template’s default text box style inserted a bullet point before all of the text in the objects, which ruined the presentation of my images. Fellow PowerPoint ninjas, learn from my mistake! If you’re including text in an object, you should consider following the steps above to avoid any resizing or template issues later on.

    A good presentation is consistent and uniform in the way it presents information. That’s why it’s always a good idea to stick to the same font, the same color scheme, and the same font size for all your slides. If you use PowerPoint to make your presentations, you probably know that any text you enter in a text box results in the box itself resizing. It does this to fit the text but it ends up messing with the layout of the slide. If you want all text boxes to be the same size, you can disable auto-fit text in PowerPoint and the text box will no longer resize itself. Instead, it will indicate how much text overflows from the current box size.

    Disable auto-fit text

    Open PowerPoint and go to the Insert tab. Click the Text box button and draw the text box on the current slide. Right-click the text box, and select Size and Position from the context menu. This will open a menu bar on the right.

    Expand the Text Box controls and select the ‘Do not Autofit’ option.

    Once you’ve done that, click inside the text box and paste or type in whatever text you want to use in the slide. The text that won’t fit in the box will overflow from it. This text will still be visible in the presentation so make sure you edit it to fit before you finalize the presentation.

    To fix the text, and still stick to the font size and font type that you’re using in the rest of your presentation you can do one of two things; you can change the size of the text in all your slides so that it’s small enough to accommodate all the text you’ve added to your slides, or you can split the text and spread it out over two or three slides.

    The second option will take less time and visually, it’s probably a better idea since no one really likes looking at a wall of text.

    A third option is to automatically resize the text so that it will fit the text box. The option can be enabled from the same panel where you disabled autofit text from. This option will allow you to have the same text box size but the size of the text inside it will differ based on how much text there is. This may, or may not look good visually so be careful if you opt for this solution.

    In PowerPoint when we type text into placeholders, the text automatically shrinks in order to fit the placeholder. The AutoFit feature shrinks the text as we type, which has as a result the fonts to be too small to be seen by the audience. A lot of people find that annoying and frustrating. How can we turn of this feature will be described below.

    First of all we must select the Office button for PowerPoint 2007 users or the File tab for PowerPoint 2010 users.

    For 2007 users: From the drop down menu we select at the right of the menu PowerPoint Options .

    For 2010 users. Once in backstage view we select the category Options as we can see in the image below.

    Either version we use, the PowerPoint Options window appears where we select the category Proofing from the left of the window, and then we select the AutoCorrect Options button from the right.

    Then under the area which is named Apply As You Type , we click to clear the check boxes for AutoFit Title Text To Placeholder and AutoFit Body Text To Placeholder , if we want to deactivate both the title and body text from auto sizing.

    Once deactivated, we press OK to all the open windows in order to return to our presentation. From now on when we type into a placeholder our text will not be shrunk automatically to fit in, but we will have to decrease the font on our own if necessary.
