Storage Sense is the Disk Cleanup replacement for the modern world. It frees up space on your computer by deleting things like recycle bin contents, temporary internet files, and app temporary files. This also includes the Downloads folder, but you can change that if you don’t want Storage Sense emptying it.

We’ve mentioned before how the Free Up Space tool in Windows 10 will delete your downloads by default (though you can turn it off, too). Storage Sense is the automatic equivalent to that tool and is the intended replacement for the venerable Disk Cleanup tool. By default, Storage Sense treats your Downloads folder as a temp folder, deleting anything older than 30 days when it runs. If you use your Downloads as a more permanent storage area for downloads, you can prevent Storage Sense from deleting your downloads.

How to Prevent Storage Sense From Deleting Your Downloaded Files

Open the Settings app by pressing Win+I, then clicking on “System.”

On the left side of the System page, click the “Storage” category.

Under the “Storage Sense” section on the right, click the “Change how we free up space automatically” link.

Now, open the “Delete files in my Downloads folder” drop-down menu and select the “Never” option.

After you’ve completed this, Smart Sense continues to run periodically but leaves your precious downloads alone.

What is storage sense?

Disk Cleanup has been modified into a new tool called Storage Sense that is designed to monitor and manage disk storage space. Prevent Storage Sense from deleting downloaded files

There are three ways you can use to prevent Storage Sense from deleting downloaded files in Windows 11/10. These are:

If you want to use the Settings app to prevent Storage Sense from deleting downloaded files, use the following instructions:

For Windows 11

  • press thewindows+mekeys to launch the Settings application.
  • From the Settings window, go toSystem > Storage.
  • Withinstorage managementsection, click the little arrow next to thestorage sense.

Storage Sense can automatically free up drive space for you by getting rid of items that you don’t need, like temporary files and items in your Recycle Bin. Here’s more info on how it works and how to set it up to meet your needs.

If Storage Sense is turned on with the default settings, it will run when your device is low on disk space and will clean up unnecessary temporary files. Content from the Recycle Bin will be deleted by default after some time, but items in your Downloads folder and OneDrive (or any other cloud provider) will not be touched unless you set up Storage Sense to do so.

Important: Storage Sense works on your system drive only, which contains the Windows operating system and is usually referred to by C:. To free up space on other drives, go to More storage settings > View storage usage on other drives.

Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage

Under Storage Sense can automatically free up drive space for you by getting rid of items that you don’t need, like temporary files and content in your recycle bin, turn on Storage Sense.

Under Run Storage Sense, select how frequently you want Storage Sense to run when you’re online and signed in.

Note: Low free disk space will vary depending on disk size and minimum operational thresholds. You’re in a low disk state when the capacity bar in Start > Settings > System > Storage turns red.

Choose your preferences for deleting temporary files

Under Temporary files, choose when files from your Recycle Bin or Downloads folder are deleted.

Items in the Recycle Bin will be deleted based on how long they have been in the Recycle Bin.

Items in your Downloads folder will be deleted based on how long they have been unopened. The default is to never delete these files unless you specify.

Manage locally available cloud content

Note: You’ll only see cloud content settings when you’re signed in to your cloud account.

Cloud files can exist locally on the disk or be available online only. To choose the conditions for when inactive files are made online only, under Content will become online-only if not opened for more than: choose your preferred amount of time.

Important: This setting will not permanently delete any files. Files can be made locally available again if there is free disk space and network connectivity. Any file marked as Always keep on this device is exempted and will not be managed by Storage Sense.

Is Storage Sense on by default?

Storage Sense is off by default. If your PC runs into low disk space and you have not interacted with Storage Sense in the past, we may turn on Storage Sense to manage select temporary files, then notify you. If you prefer, you can choose to turn Storage Sense off right away or after the low disk state is resolved.

If you turn on Storage Sense, the default settings will run when your device is low on disk space. Note that the Downloads folder and cloud content will not be managed unless you specify.

How do I delete Windows.old or Previous Windows Installation(s)?

Can Storage Sense run if I’m not signed in?

But If you don’t want the Storage Sense to delete files by itself, you can change its default settings to prevent Windows 10 from automatically deleting files when you want to keep them

Step 1. Open the “Settings” app. Click the “System” > “Storage”. You can flip the Storage Sense switch to “Off”.

Step 2. If you don’t want to disable this feature totally, you can re-configure Storage Sense by click “Change how we free up space automatically”.

Step 3. Click the box under “Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over” and select “Never”. Also, click the box under “Delete files in my Downloads folder if they have been there for over” and choose “Never”.

Method 3. Uninstall Faulty Updates that Delete Files on Windows 10

How to Enable & Customize Storage Sense

Step 1: Head over to Settings > System and click on Storage.

Alternately, you can hit Windows key+Q for Cortana and type Storage.

Step 2: Once in, turn on the switch for Storage sense. By default, this feature only takes care of temporary files and old files in the Recycle Bin.

Step 3: To opt for the option to clean up the Downloads folder, click on the Change how we free up space link. This will take you to the Configurations page.

Now, all you have to do is check the third option and you’re sorted. From now on the system will automatically keep the junk pile-up process in check.

Windows 10’s Storage Sense feature automatically runs when you’re low on disk space. It automatically deletes files more than 30 days old in your Recycle Bin, too. This was on by default on a PC running the May 2019 Update.

This is a useful feature! If your computer is low on disk space, you probably want more. Windows will clear old files out of your Recycle Bin. You shouldn’t be storing files in your Recycle Bin, anyway. But, if you want to stop Windows from doing this automatically, you can.

To find these options, head to Settings > System > Storage. You can press Windows+I to open the Settings window quickly.

If you’d like to stop Storage Sense from doing anything automatically, you can flip the Storage Sense switch to “Off” here. To configure Storage Sense further, click “Configure Storage Sense or run it now.”

The “Run Storage Sense” box lets you control when Windows 10 runs Storage Sense automatically. By default, it runs “During low free disk space.” You could also have it run every day, every week, or every month.

To stop Storage Sense from automatically deleting files in your Recycle Bin, click the “Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over” box under Temporary Files and select “Never.” By default, Storage Sense will delete files that have been in your Recycle Bin for over 30 days.

The “Delete files in my Downloads folder if they have been there for over” box will let Storage Sense automatically delete files from your Downloads folder. This option was off by default on our PC, however.

With the latest Windows 10 Microsoft has added a new feature “Storage sense” similar to the old Disk Cleanup Utility found in older versions of Windows that monitors your system for old and unused files and actively removes them on a regular schedule. We can say Microsoft has cleverly merged the old Disk Cleanup feature and the Delete Temporary files feature and made the process as easy as pie.

Microsoft has added Storage sense as an optional feature, which is disabled by default, but when enabled, it’ll proactively delete temporary (those created by apps) delete files that have been in the recycle bin for more than 30 days, as well as files in the Downloads folder that haven’t changed in 30 days.

How To enable Storage sense?

With Storage sense, your Windows 10 can automatically free up disk space, when you’re low on it. Here’s how to enable and configure Storage sense in Windows 10

  • Click on the start menu icon and start typing “Storage”.
  • The first result that pops up, Storage settings, is exactly what you want.
  • Or In the Settings menu click on “System.” Next, click on “Storage” in the column on the left.

Notice the heading that reads “Storage Sense” and Turn on the Storage sense toggle switch to let Windows 10 automatically manage space and free up space when you’re low on it.

Automatically Delete Temp Files in Windows 10

Using Storage sense, you can allow Windows 10 to automatically free up space when your device is running low on disk space. To free up disk space automatically on Windows 10, Again open Settings -> System -> Storage in the column on the left.

Here click on the link “ Configure storage sense or run it now” you’ll be taken to a screen where you can dictate which files Storage Sense mops up and how often.

  1. Here first make sure the Storage sense switch is toggled on.
  2. Use the drop-down menu to select when you want to run Storage sense automatically when your device is running low on storage.
  3. Under “Temporary files,” check the Delete temporary files that my apps aren’t using the option.
  4. Using the “Delete files in my recycle bin if they have been there for over” drop-down menu and select 1, 14, 30, 60 days, or never to disable the option.

Note: With the latest Windows 10 version 2004 Storage Sense now has the capability to automatically free up disk space by making older, unused, locally available files be available online-only with the help of a process called “dehydration”, meaning your local files will now be saved in the OneDrive cloud and can be accessed when connected to the internet.

Storage Sense is off by default. Step 1: Right-click on the Start menu icon and select Settings from the list. Alternatively, you can press the Windows key + I to launch the Settings app quickly.

Step 2: On the System tab, navigate to Storage on the right pane.

Step 3: Click on Temporary files.

Step 4: Check the boxes that read ‘Windows Update Cleanup’ and ‘Delivery Optimization Files.’ Uncheck everything else.

Step 5: Once selected, click the ‘Remove files’ button at the top. When a prompt appears, click ContinueFf.

Wait for Windows to delete the selected files and free up the storage space.

2. Delete Old Windows Update Files With the Disk Cleanup Tool

1. Clean up disk to remove junk files

When the low disk space alert pops up, you may turn on storage sense and click the “Free up storage space” windows to reclaim disk space, or run the standalone Disk Cleanup utility. This Windows native tool is excellent to accomplish the cleanup task.

How to fix C drive low disk space in Windows 10 with Disk Cleanup:

  1. Press Windows and R together on your keyboard, input cleanmgr and press Enter .
  2. Select C: drive to continue.
  3. Click the check-boxes of the files that you want to delete and click OK.

  1. Press Windows and X on keyboard, then click Settings
  2. Click System>Storage.
  3. Click Change where new content is saved under More storage settings.
  4. Click the drop-down list to select new location and click Apply.
