This purple flowering herb gives off a refreshing aroma when planted in the garden or used in its oil form. Megan Fitzgerald, executive spa director at The LakeHouse Spa in Austin, Texas, classifies lavender as an “adaptogen,” which is a natural substance that helps the body adjust to stress. She explains that the scent can help you calm down if you feel wired or boost your spirits when you feel exhausted.
Found in the flowers of the tropical Cananga tree, ylang-ylang oil is frequently used in beauty products, such as perfumes and serums, as well as for home fragrances. “Ylang-ylang enhances feelings of joy and comfort, improving mood and energy while promoting relaxation,” Weiss says. The sweet, floral scent has a slightly fruity aroma.

We may also look to our favorite playlists when we’re feeling stressed or need a moment of peace.
5. Meditate. OK, so this isn’t a wacky way to relax, but it’s one that’s almost guaranteed to work. Meditation is a scientifically proven way to reduce stress and negative emotions in the body according to the Mayo Clinic. When you meditate, which can be accomplished through guided meditation or other forms such as yoga or Tai Chi, be sure to dim the lights and set a soothing atmosphere. Do you struggle with managing stress? Most of us do at some time or another. But for entrepreneurs who are juggling multiple roles and responsibilities, managing stress can be even more of a challenge.
Between busy schedules for work and family, lots of details to stay on top of, and the potential for unexpected challenges, it isn’t easy for small business owners to keep life in balance or make time to unwind. We wear so many hats and there’s always so much to do. And with technology keeping us constantly connected, the boundaries between work and down time are often blurred. We’re tethered and can easily forget how important it is to recharge and unwind.
It’s unrealistic to think we can remove all stress, but there are ways to reduce the effects or shift more quickly from overwhelmed to your calm, cool, productive best. Regular exercise, getting enough sleep and good nutrition should always be the foundation of your plan for managing stress, but we often overlook simple strategies that can help relieve stress throughout the course of any day.
So, here’s a list of some the best tips and strategies you can use during your day for managing stress:
Take a few deep breaths. – Deep, measured breathing relaxes muscles and increases oxygen levels to the brain. And it can be done anywhere, at any time.
Light a scented candle. – With the popularity of scented candles, there are lots of options out there. Find a scent you love that calms and soothes or refreshes your senses.
Laugh – It’s hard to be stressed if you’re laughing or smiling. It lightens the mood and lifts the spirits. A good dose of laughter can break the tension and get you back on track.

Like music, you can also find lots of guided meditations on the Internet, but here’s a great resource for guided meditations I’ve found.
Let go of the small stuff and things you can’t control. – Life is short and many of the things we’re worrying about or stressing over today will likely be resolved or forgotten tomorrow. Try to keep things in perspective and focus on the things that truly matter.
Take a few minutes to feel grateful and focus on your blessings and the good things in your life. – It’s easy to get stuck in negativity when you feel overwhelmed by work or life, but there is always something to be grateful for!
Think about the glass being half full – not half empty. – In fact, take a moment to just be grateful you have a glass!
Just Say No! – Turn down people or projects that make you feel overextended, overcommitted or overwhelmed. This may feel uncomfortable the first few times you try it, but once you realize the benefits of seizing control of your time, it gets easier.
Remember, life is a journey, not a destination. – It’s not a competition where we’re racing to a finish line. It’s all about learning, progressing, growing, and making the most of your journey.

As a teacher I have had my fair share of stress over the years. At one point the stress of teaching got too much and I took a step back and reduced my hours. This has helped a lot and I value the extra time I now have with my family. But it hasn’t eliminated stress altogether, as a mother I do feel I do the stressing for everyone in our home. So these are my top tips for how to relax and unwind from stress.

Not just for children. Colouring has helped me a lot to unwind in the evenings. Getting lost in the patterns and colours is a great way to relax. There are no right or wrong ways to do it. You can even grab some free printable colouring pages. So you can start tonight. Other crafty hobbies I have found relaxing are cross stitch and embroidery. Which can be easily started will the minimum of materials or skills needed.
There is nothing better than getting lost in a good book. I’ve have to remind myself of how wonderful it makes me feel when I indulge my passion for reading on holiday. Making sure that I take time to pick up my book and read for at least 10 minutes a day has had real benefits. My current favourite reads have been Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, American Gods and Night Shift
I have always loved a good jigsaw puzzle as a way of relaxing. Seeing a picture being built before your eyes. But after a very unfortunate incident with the cat mistakenly thinking I’d left a new litter tray on the kitchen table. I’ve been less inclined.

I walk a lot for the school run etc. But walking for relaxation is different. My sister in law and I have taken up walking on Wednesday evenings. We walk for an hour, enjoying the cool night air and taking the time to blow off steam about our weeks. It’s a great way to get rid of stress and I often come home with a new energy for the rest of the week ahead.
I really should do more of it. Not only for my wobbly belly but for the opportunity to focus on my breathing. Think about how my body is feeling and take a moment to do something purely for my benefit. We often put our needs of our bodies and mental health further down the list than they should be. Ten to fifteen minutes a day is not a big ask.
In our busy lives we come to using the shower as the go to way to get clean. In and out in less than five minutes. So bath time is not about getting clean, but having a decadent evening to yourself. Pour in half a bottle of bubbles. Have a glass of wine or a mug of tea. Let yourself truly soak. Invent in a lock for your door too, if you really want to preserve your peace.

We can’t stress enough on how important it is to unwind after a long and tiring week. If you want to recharge yourself and have the energy to power through the week ahead, you need to give your mind and body enough rest. There will be several things that’ll keep you from getting some time to relax and unwind but cut out these distractions and do what you love.

1. Read a book
The ultimate way to unwind is to read a book. Just get lost in a different world and forget all your to-do lists, tasks, meetings, etc. Reading helps you relax and reduce stress. Make a good book your best friend for the weekend. If you like to read but are always too busy to get some time out for the same, this is your chance!
2. Binge-watch your current favorite TV series
If you are more of a ‘TV-watcher’ than a ‘book-reader’, then pick out a series that you have been wanting to watch, and binge-watch it over the weekend. We all have a tendency to munch on things while watching TV so be mindful of what you put into your body.
3. Go on a long drive
Don’t really fancy staying indoors? Put on some music and go on a long drive to some peaceful place nearby. Grab your favorite person along to make it a better experience. Or, just go solo to reconnect with yourself.
4. Spend time doing what you love
What’s that one thing you love doing? What’s your stress-buster? It can be spending time with your pets, writing, gaming, playing instruments, art, and many other things. Rediscover that love and make it your weekend plan. You could also attend workshops for the same. A little bit of socializing and a lot of stress-busting.
5. Relax with a good massage
Our favorite way to unwind is going to the spa. A good 90-minute massage followed by a head massage helps with releasing stress and rejuvenates your mind and body. If you are physically active throughout the week, this is highly recommendable!
6. Go on a social media detox
We all enjoy scrolling through our feeds endlessly to see what’s the latest trend on social media and what everyone is up to. Though it can be entertaining, we don’t realize how harmful it is for our mental and physical health. Disconnect from social media for the weekend and spend time the old-school way. 7. Declutter and tidy up your space
Though a lot of us think of cleaning as a drudgery, it can be one of the best ways to relax and unwind. National Relaxation Day is coming up on August 15th and we are celebrating this holiday by taking a step back from the fast-paced world we live in to relax and unwind. Although some stress can be helpful in pushing you to do your best in day-to-day activities, too much stress can be harmful to your mental and physical wellbeing. Below are five ways to decompress and take care of yourself on National Relaxation Day:
1. Create an at-home relaxation retreat.
With so many daily stressors, it’s important to have a space to go to at home where you can unwind and relax. Make this space fit your personality by adding your favorite items. Some items that are great for relaxation are books, coloring materials, incense, flowers, plants and more.
