Many people with IBS say they’re extremely gassy. ItвЂ™s not clear why. They donвЂ™t seem to make more gas than anyone else, but it seems to bother them more. Studies have found that people with IBS have trouble getting rid of gas, possibly because of problems with how the nerves and muscles in their gut work. Their intestines may also be extra sensitive. Even a normal amount of gas may cause pain.
Dealing with IBS and gas is hard. Symptoms vary widely from one person to the next, and no single treatment works for everyone. What gives someone else gas may not bother you at all. What brings you relief may have no effect on someone else. There are many different strategies you can try. Most have to do with what you eat.
Because IBSВ is different for everyone, it may help to keep a food diary to see what triggers your symptoms. Once you know the problem foods, you can avoid them.
Foods on most people’s lists include:
- Beans and other legumes like peas, peanuts, and lentils
- Raw broccoli and cauliflower
- Brussels sprouts
“Get more fiber” is standard advice for people with IBS, especially if you have constipation. But sometimes it can make gas worse. The type and amount of fiber you add matters. So does how you add it to your diet.
Insoluble fiber, found in whole wheat, tends to make more gas. Two types of fiber appear to reduce gas: methylcellulose and polycarbophil. They can be found in some fiber supplements.
Increase your fiber gradually. It may give you more gas at first, but that should get better as your body gets used to it.
Certain carbs called FODMAPs are a problem for people with IBS. These carbs arenвЂ™t absorbed by the small intestine. When they hit the large intestine, they quickly break down and make gas. It happens to everyone, but it can be a problem for people with IBS.

- Milk, yogurt, soft cheeses like ricotta, cottage cheese, and cream cheese, custard, and ice cream
- Honey, high-fructose corn syrup, and certain sugar-free gums and candy
- Wheat and rye
- Cashews and pistachios
Probiotics and Antibiotics
One theory about IBS is that the normal blend of helpful bacteria that live in the intestines has been disrupted. Some of them make more gas than others as they help break down your food. People with IBS may have too much of those types of bacteria.
Probiotics are supplements that add bacteria to the digestive system to bring back the right balance. Studies on taking probiotics for IBS show some promise.
Some people with IBS have reported less gassiness after taking antibiotics. That could be because the drug is killing gas-producing bacteria in your gut.
Some over-the-counter dietary supplements help your body make less gas. The enzyme lactase helps you digest milk and dairy products. It can be bought as a supplement, and it is added to some milk products for people with lactose intolerance. Alpha-galactosidase, an enzyme found in some gas-relieving over-the counter medications, helps your body break down the sugar in beans and other vegetables.
One of the main causes of gas is swallowing air. That can happen when you chew gum, eat or drink too fast, or drink through a straw. What you donвЂ™t get rid of by burping ends up in your intestines.

The average adult passes gas between 13 and 21 times a day. Gas is a normal part of the digestion process. But if gas builds up in your intestines and you’re unable to expel it, you may start to feel pain and discomfort.
Gas pain, bloating, and flatus frequency can be exacerbated by anything that causes diarrhea or constipation. Gas can also be caused by:
- swallowing air while you eat or drink
- gum chewing
- smoking cigarettes
- eating certain foods
Make an appointment with your doctor if your gas symptoms:
- cause you distress
- change suddenly
- are accompanied with constipation, diarrhea, or weight loss
Your doctor can determine the underlying cause.
Often, your gas is caused by what you eat. Food is digested primarily in your small intestine. What is left undigested is fermented in your colon with bacteria, fungi, and yeast, as part of digestion. This process produces methane and hydrogen, which are expelled as flatus.
For many people, changing dietary habits is enough to alleviate gas and its accompanying symptoms. One way to determine which foods are giving you gas is by keeping a food diary. Common culprits include:
- high-fiber food
- foods with high fat content
- fried or spicy food
- carbonated beverages
- artificial ingredients commonly found in low-carbohydrate and sugar-free products, such as sugar alcohol, sorbitol, and maltitol
- beans and lentils
- cruciferous vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli
- prunes or prune juice
- foods containing lactose, such as milk, cheese, and other dairy products
- fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) — molecules found in a wide range of foods, such as garlic and onion, that may be hard to digest
- over-the-counter fiber drinks and supplements
Once you figure out what food is causing the gas, you can modify your diet to avoid the culprit.
If changing your diet doesn’t completely do the trick, you have several options to try.
have shown that peppermint tea or supplements may reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, including gas. Talk to your doctor before you start using supplements. Peppermint can interfere with iron absorption and certain medications. It may also cause heartburn in some people.
Supplements will have directions about how much you should take on the bottle. For peppermint tea, drink one cup before each meal for best results.
Chamomile tea can also help reduce indigestion, trapped gas, and bloating. Drinking chamomile tea before meals and at bedtime may reduce symptoms for some people.
Simethicone is an over-the-counter medication that is available under several different brand names. These include:
- Mylanta Gas
Simethicone works by consolidating gas bubbles in your stomach, allowing you to expel them more easily. Follow dosing instructions, and make sure to discuss this medication with your doctor, if you’re taking other medications or pregnant.
Activated charcoal is another type of over-the-counter medication that helps eliminate gas trapped in your colon. You take tablets right before and one hour after meals.
Apple cider vinegar
Dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a beverage, like water or tea. Drink right before meals or up to three times daily as long as needed to reduce symptoms.
Exercise can help release trapped gas and gas pain. Try walking after meals as a way to avoid gas. If you have gas pain, jumping rope, running, or walking may help you expel it.
Lactose is a sugar in milk. People with lactose intolerance can’t digest this sugar. Lactase is the enzyme the body uses to break down lactose. Lactase supplements are available over the counter and can help your body digest lactose.
Cloves are an herb used in cooking. Clove oil may help reduce bloating and gas by producing digestive enzymes. Add two to five drops to an 8-ounce glass of water and drink after meals.
If no medical condition is causing the problem, preventing gas may best be accomplished by altering lifestyle habits and diet:
- Sit down during each meal and eat slowly.
- Try not to take in too much air while you eat and talk.
- Stop chewing gum.
- Avoid soda and other carbonated beverages.
- Avoid smoking.
- Find ways to work exercise into your routine, such as taking a walk after a meal.
- Eliminate foods known to cause gas.
- Avoid drinking through straws.

Whatever gas symptoms you experience—burping, passing gas, belly pain, or bloating—while unpleasant or even embarrassing, know that these are all normal bodily functions. In fact, the average person passes gas up to 23 times a day.
However, if you find your gas is particularly bothersome, there are simple, fast-acting tips that can help. Keep in mind, though, if you cannot get gas relief promptly, or your gas symptoms are associated with worrisome symptoms like weight loss or persistent constipation or diarrhea, be sure to contact your doctor.
While gas production is a normal consequence of eating and digestion, some health conditions (for example, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, lactose intolerance, gastroenteritis, irritable bowel disease, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) cause more gas than normal.
In these cases, addressing the underlying “why” behind your excessive gas (under the care of a healthcare professional) is key to ultimately obtaining relief. For example, you may need a lactase supplement if you have lactose intolerance.
Don’t Suppress Passing Gas
If you are sure that your symptoms are definitely related to trapped gas, now is not the time to think about modesty. Go to a private place, let out a big burp, or find a bathroom and relieve yourself. The less gas there is in your system, the less likely it will be that you will be in pain.
Move Your Bowels
If you are able to have a bowel movement, do so. Don’t wait until you are in the comfort of your own home. In the end, having a bowel movement will help in two ways:
- You will speed up the movement of the muscles lining your large intestine, which will help to encourage the gas to make its way out of your system.
- A bowel movement empties the rectum of any stored stool, freeing up the passage of the trapped intestinal gas.
Spearmint, ginger, and anise teas all have gas-reducing reputations. That said, avoid anise if you are prone to chronic diarrhea as it appears to have a mild laxative effect (this can, however, be beneficial to you if you believe constipation might be contributing to your gas pains).
Chew Fennel Seeds
Fennel seeds have a reputation for reducing intestinal gas. A safe amount appears to be approximately one teaspoon. Try chewing some seeds and assess if they are helpful for you.
here is mixed information regarding the safety of ingesting extra fennel when pregnant or breastfeeding. If that applies to you, it would be best to play it on the safe side and choose an alternative gas-relieving option.
Besides being very soothing psychologically, heat helps to relax the muscles in your gut and inhibits pain sensations. You can use a heating pad, a hot water bottle or, if you are at home, you can try a hot bath.
If you use a heating pad or hot water bottle, be sure to protect your skin from a burn with a layer of clothing. If you are prone to recurrent gas pain attacks, it might be wise to make sure that a heating pad is available to you for use when you are at work.
Move Your Body
Gentle exercise can be helpful in easing the gas pain. Walking is the easiest option since you can do it practically anytime, anywhere.
Walking helps to relax the muscles in your abdomen, with the effect of helping trapped gas make its escape.
Yoga is another great option if you have space and privacy. Several yoga poses, such as child’s pose (Balasana) and happy baby (Ananda Balasana), have been associated with easing the passage of intestinal gas.
Take Some Deep Breaths
Deep diaphragmatic breathing may help to ease the pain, but only if this is something you practice on a regular basis. Since this type of breathing is so effective for stress reduction, it’s worth taking the time to learn it. You can then use this breathing technique as needed for future gas attacks.
Head to the Drugstore
Some people, but not all, find they get gas relief from over-the-counter products, such as simethicone and activated charcoal. Of the two, simethicone is considered to be the better option, although experts are not quite sure how it works. Brand names for simethicone include Maalox Anti-Gas, Mylanta Gas, Gas-X, and Phazyme.
Be advised that activated charcoal may result in unwanted gastrointestinal symptoms, such as constipation, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting, and its use is somewhat controversial within the medical community. Moreover, if you decide to try activated charcoal, you may find that it turns your stool black, but this is not something to be concerned about.
As with any over-the-counter product, check with your doctor before use. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid these products.
Prevention Is Key
Once you have gas relief, it’s a good idea to consider what might have been the cause so you can avoid future episodes.
The most common culprit of gas buildup is swallowing too much air. To prevent excessive air swallowing, try avoiding these practices in the future:
- Chewing gum
- Drinking soda and other fizzy drinks
- Eating or drinking too fast
- Talking while eating
- Drinking through a straw
Modifying your diet can also help prevent gas problems. Limiting high-fiber foods is a great start, but it’s important not to eliminate them from your diet completely, as they contain essential vitamins and minerals. Moderation is your best bet.
Some examples of high-fiber foods include:
- Vegetables (especially asparagus, artichoke, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, corn, and potatoes)
- Kidneys beans
- Certain fruits (for example, apples, peaches, pears, bananas, raspberries, and strawberries)
- Whole grains
You may also consider taking an over-the-counter product, called Beano, which is an oral solution of alpha-galactosidase, the enzyme that helps your gut digest high-fiber foods. Talk to your doctor, though, before trying it, especially if you have diabetes (Beano can raise blood sugar levels).
Other foods and drinks that may produce excess gas include dairy products such as, milk, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt, as well as fruit juices and sugar-free candies that contain sorbitol, mannitol, or xylitol.
In the end, it’s a good idea to keep a food diary, considering that certain foods may be more “gassy” than others for different people.

When eating in an irregular interval that too an improper food, isn’t it called double injury? Maybe yes. Try to eat healthy foods which provide you both calorie and nutrition values. I agree, that we can’t live without eating high-calorie junk foods like Pizza, burgers, French fries, Sandwich, etc. But I suggest you eat in a limited manner and that too in a regular interval.
I personally suggest you eat cherries which are very good for functioning at the time of gas pains.
3. When you are Inactive.
Most of the people work by sitting. They use a laptop, write notes, play games, and watch TV. When you sit daily in a fixed position without any physical work, the digestion of the food you eat gets slow and results in the form of gasses. I suggest you take a gap and roam somewhere every 2-hour intervals.

1. Vajra Asana
I can say that this position works best for you to relieve gas fastly. It really works very effectively. But it was quite harder to bend your knees and sit. However, you can do any of the positions listed below.
2. Plank Position
This actually works to burn fat and also build abs. It can also help to relieve gas as it will keep high pressure on your abdomen. Plank is a position where you lay on the ground just by the support of your toes and elbow keeping your head straight to the front.
3. Child Yoga Pose
The child yoga pose is another position you can do to relieve gas. It was a bit easy compared to the above positions. When we do it in this way our abdomen gets a lot of pressure from outside. It releases gas so that we will start to bloat or pass gas in other forms.
4. Hand to Feet Position
By doing this, there will be a pressure on your legs and abdomen which relieves gas. The hand to feet pose should be done by keeping your legs straight without a small bend. It gives you great results in your gastric problems.
5. Seated Forward Bend Pose
This is quite similar to the above position. But the above Hand to Feet position is performed in standing whereas this can be performed by sitting. But the stress was the same. It also was a good position to relieve gas for the stomach.
6. Seated Spinal Twist Pose
Seated Spinal Twist is a pose where your spinal cord will be twisted for a few seconds. It was helpful to relieve gas from any other areas including your abdomen area and also chest area.
7. Camel Pose
Camel pose is a little tough pose but quite works effectively. Here every part of your body gets stretched so that the gas relief was done completely.
8. Cat-Cow Pose.
So finally, the last position is here. Cat-Cow Pose is an easy position among all of the above. It looks like a child playing on the bed. But it was also one of the great exercises to workout our body. It helps you by the movement of your abdomen and chest part. So that you can easily relieve gas.

- Start with your feet hip-width apart and facing forward.

Intestinal gas is rarely a sign of a medical problem. Again, it’s a normal by-product of digestion. But according to the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP), there are a handful of conditions that are associated with an increase in gas. These conditions include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), lactose intolerance, and celiac disease.
For this reason, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) advises seeing a doctor about gas if it’s accompanied by other symptoms, such as weight loss, fever, or bleeding.
Otherwise, measures such as changing your diet to exclude foods known to cause gas, such as milk, beans, and cruciferous vegetables, kicking the smoking habit, giving up chewing gum and drinking through straws (both of which introduce air into the body), and getting more exercise, should help to keep the amount of gas you experience each day to a minimum.
