Install Microsoft Office 2013 and you may see a grayed out “SkyDrive Pro” option in your context menu. This option appears whenever you right-click a file or folder, but it’s useless if you don’t use SharePoint.

SkyDrive Pro is used to sync files with a Microsoft SharePoint server, as Microsoft has explained. It is different from Microsoft’s consumer-focused SkyDrive client and removing this option shouldn’t prevent the normal SkyDrive software from functioning.

Removing SkyDrive Pro

There’s no obvious way to disable this option in Office 2013’s interface. We will have to delete it from the Windows registry.

To open the registry editor, press the Windows key to open the Start menu, type regedit into the search box in the Start menu, and press Enter. (On Windows 8, press the Windows key, type regedit at the Start screen, and press Enter.)

Installieren Sie Microsoft Office 2013.

Tip / Trick

When you right-click a file or folder in Windows Explorer, a context menu opens with various shortcuts and options. They can include a multitude of shell extensions such as Scan with AVG and Find Empty Folders with Glary Utilities. Indeed, if you install a lot of software then your right-click context menu may be very messy. With suitable software you can remove shell extensions to clear up your Windows Explorer context menu.

To clear up the Windows Explorer context menu, download ShellExView. That’s a software application with which you can remove the shell extensions from the context menu. Any shell extension removed, can also be put back on the context menus with the software.

You can add the ShellExView software to Windows 98 up to Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) from this website. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and then select Download self-install executable for installing ShellExView with uninstall support. Then click Run to add the software to Windows.

Once added to Windows, open the ShellExView software window below. What you have there is a list of the shell extensions on your context menus. Now you can remove some of them.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

Firstly, right-click a folder icon in Windows Explorer to open its context menu as below. In the context menu below there are a few shell extensions, such as Find Empty Folders with Glary Utilities and Scan with AVG, that could be removed from it.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

Find the corresponding shell extensions listed in ShellExView. To list them alphabetically, click the Extension column heading at the top left of the window. Then locate the shell extension’s software with ShellExView. For example, the software lists Scan with AVG as AVG Shell Extension Class; and the Find Empty Folders with Glary Utilities shell extension is listed as Glary Utilities Context Menu Shell Extension.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

Once you have found the pertinent shell extension in ShellExView, select it and then click on the Disable Selected Items option (the red circle) at the top left of the window. That then removes the shell extension from the Windows Explorer context menus. I removed all the Glary Utility options from the context menu below by disabling the Glary Utilities Context Menu Shell Extension. To put the shell extensions back on the Windows Explorer context menus, select them and click on the green circle at the top left of the window.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

You can remove the Windows Explorer context menu shortcuts much the same with ShellExView. The only other way to remove them would be to uninstall their software such as Glary Utilities. Or you could delve in and tweak the registry without the ShellExView software.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

You can easily remove AMD Radeon Software option from the right-click context menu. Here are the exact steps to follow.

If you have a Radeon APU or GPU in your system and installed the AMD Radeon Software to manage the graphic settings, it will automatically add the ‘AMD Radeon Software’ option to the right-click context menu. This behavior is very similar to that of Intel or Nvidia software. However, what’s not similar is that the option not only appears in the desktop context menu but in the File Explorer too.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

Generally, this option allows quick access to AMD Radeon Settings. While this is a good thing, not many use it for its intended purpose. Consequently, the AMD Radeon Software option unnecessarily takes up the context menu space. Not to mention, the option look quite ugly with its blocky icon. If you don’t like the option in the right-click menu, follow the steps below to quickly remove the AMD Radeon Software option in the context menu.

Jump to:

There are two ways to remove the AMD Radeon Software option. You can either edit the registry or use the free Autoruns software from Microsoft. If you are uncomfortable editing the registry, I recommend you follow the second method.

  5. Select the “Delete” option from the context menu.

Is it possible to turn this feature on or off with an option?

The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:

zadjii-msft commented Oct 30, 2020 •

Ah no, we don’t have a setting for that currently. Thanks for the request!

I’m curious as to why the context menu isn’t working for you – is there a reason you want to be able to disable it?

I’m also terribly worried that we can’t control whether this is shown at runtime or not. Maybe in OpenTerminalHere::GetState ? We’ll probably want to wait till fOkToBeSlow , then load the settings, then check if it’s enabled or not.

PathogenDavid commented Nov 12, 2020 •

A workaround was posted in a similar issue:

In my case I wanted to remove it because I’m still waiting on a handful of planned Terminal features before I really start using it, so until then it’s just clutter.

IMO, removing shell extensions should always be an option. For every app that thinks it’s being helpful adding its self to the Explorer context menu there’s 10 more that are adding clutter.

That being said, it appears that Terminal is adding the shell extension via the appxmanifest, so I can imagine it’s not as simple to provide an opt-out compared to traditional apps. (Maybe setting that HKCU\. \Blocked value is viable? Needing the restart is not the best UX though.)

scx commented Nov 13, 2020 •

Is it possible to turn this feature on or off with an option?

To disable this menu entry, just add the REG_SZ key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked . As the name, type <9F156763-7844-4DC4-B2B1-901F640F5155>. You don’t have to enter any value, but I recommend to use something like WindowsTerminal or so. Then you have to restart Explorer.

  1. Run the following command in an elevated Command Prompt (e.g. Open Menu Start, search for cmd.exe , then right click on Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator :

Alternatively, you can import this Windows Registry file:

Don’t forget to restart Explorer.

How did I come up with this?
Search Windows Registry for WindowsTerminal in HKCR ( HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT ).

In Windows, whenever we right-click on Desktop or in Windows Explorer, we get “New” menu which allows us to create new folder, new shortcut and new files using various known file types. It helps us in creating new files, folders and shortcuts easily and quickly.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

Sometimes you may want to remove a few unwanted items from “New” menu to reduce its size or to restrict others from creating new files or shortcuts or you may want to add a few new items to “New” menu such as new file types, etc.

So today in this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to customize or modify the “New” menu in Windows to add or remove items from it. This method will work in all Windows versions:

METHOD A: To Add an Item in “New” Menu

    1. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor. Now expand “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT” key.

    2. Now look for a sub-key having same name as the file type which you want to add in “New” menu. For example, if you want to add XML file type to “New” menu, look for .xml key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key.

    3. Now right-click on it and select “New -> Key” option. It’ll create a new key, give it name ShellNew

    4. In right-side pane, right-click and select “New -> String Value“. Give it name NullFile and press Enter.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

That’s it. You’ll immediately get the file type entry in “New” menu.

NOTE: Sometimes this method might not work for a few file types in newer Windows versions. In such condition, you’ll also need to create a dummy template file after following the above steps as mentioned in following steps:

    5. Create a new file of same file type which you want to add in “New” menu (in our example we wanted to add XML file type to “New” menu, so we’ll create a new .xml file), give it any name and copy it to C:\Windows\ShellNew folder.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

    6. Now in Registry Editor, create another String with the name FileName in same key where you created NullFile string in Step 4 and set FileName string value to the full path of the file pasted in “C:\Windows\ShellNew” folder.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

Since in our example, the full path of Template.xml file is C:\Windows\ShellNew\Template.xml, We have set the same as value of FileName string in Registry.

Now the new file type will appear in “New” menu as shown in following screenshot:

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

METHOD B: To Remove an Item from “New” Menu

    1. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. Now expand “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT” key.

    2. Now look for the file type which you want to remove from “New” menu, e.g. for removing “Rich Text Document (.rtf)” file type look for .rtf key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key.

    3. Expand it and delete the ShellNew key present under it.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

    4. That’s it. The file type will be removed from “New” menu.

I find that for Windows 7 (Pro, 64-bit) a restart is needed for the new registry value to be picked up. But then it works fine. Great tip!

Thanks for this tutorial , this was what i was looking for, now i can get rid of the nagging bmp file being created instead of using the short key for creating a folder Win Key+F, bmp shortcut was created by Faststone Image Viewer which i didn’t want.

Thanks for this , keep up the good work.

Hai, I found out that if you want to temporary disable an item in ‘new’ list, you can ‘comment out’ the ShellNew key by renaming it to //ShellNew, or something like that.

This guide worked for me after trying everything else I could find.

By default, before you’ve mucked around with your system, when you right-click in an empty space in Windows Explorer in Windows 7, and hover over “new”, you’ll see a list of things you can create new: new folder, new word document, new excel sheet, and normally New Text Document. However, for many people who install a different program for editing .txt files than the default windows one (such as Notepad++, in my case), you might soon find that New Text Document no longer appears when you right-click and hover over “new”.

The problem is in the Registry.

Open your start menu, type in “run” in the search bar and press enter. Type in “regedit” in the screen that pops up and press enter. This brings up your registry.

Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, expand it, then navigate to the .txt subfolder. Click on the .txt subfolder. In the right screen, check the value of “Default”. It should be “txtfile”. If it’s not, right click on “Default,” choose “Modify” and change the value to “txtfile”

In the right screen in the same place, check the value of PerceivedType. If it doesn’t exist, right-click in the right screen and click new > string value. Name it PerceivedType, right-click on it, and change the value to “text”

Expand the .txt subfolder. Click on ShellNew (if it’s not there, right-click on the .txt subfolder > new > key and create one with the name ShellNew). With ShellNew selected, look in the right screen and check that there is an entry called NullFile. If there is not, create one by right-clicking and selecting new > string value. There’s no need to enter a data value here.

Hopefully, this will have solved your problems! You should be able to right-click and find new > New Text Document without restarting.

Loads of thanks; you are a life-saviour 😀

There are many popular file archive and compression utilities available such as WinRAR , WinZip, etc. But most of these software are paid. Although they provide their trial versions to use but you need to purchase their full versions when the trial versions expire.

Among these popular file archivers, there is an absolutely free and open source file archive manager available for Windows operating system which is known as 7-Zip .

7-Zip is an excellent and free file archiver and compressor software for Windows which supports almost all popular packing/unpacking file formats such as zip, gzip, tar, wim, rar, 7z, etc.

When you install 7-Zip program in your computer, it adds its options to file/folder context menus (right-click menus) as shown in following screenshot:

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

You can see 7-Zip options such as open archive, extract files, test archive, compress and email, etc in the context menu when you right-click on a file or folder in Windows Explorer.

Recently an AskVG reader asked us how to remove these 7-Zip options from files and folders context menus? He wanted to use the software program but he didn’t like the context menu options. He wanted to cleanup the menu and get rid of 7-Zip options from the context menu.

If you also want to delete the 7-Zip options from context menu in Windows, this tutorial will help you. Today in this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to customize 7-Zip context menu options. You can remove them completely or change their appearance in context menu.

We’ll not take help of Registry Editor as 7-Zip already comes with built-in settings to remove or customize its context menu options.

Check out following simple steps to customize 7-Zip context menu options:

    1. Right-click on 7-Zip program shortcut and select “Run as Administrator” option. It’ll launch 7-Zip in administrative mode.

    2. Now click on Tools -> Options menu. It’ll open 7-Zip options window.

    3. Now go to “7-Zip” tab and you’ll see several options to customize 7-Zip context menu options.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

    Remove 7-Zip Context Menu Options:

To remove 7-Zip options from files and folders context menu, uncheck following options:

    • Integrate 7-Zip to shell context menu
    • Integrate 7-Zip to shell context menu (32-bit)

Click on Apply and OK buttons to apply changes.

Now you can check by right-clicking on files and folders. You’ll no longer see 7-Zip options in context menu.

    Customize 7-Zip Context Menu Options:

If you want to change 7-Zip context menu options appearance, you can change other available options.

If you uncheck “Cascaded context menu” option, all 7-Zip options will be displayed directly in context menu. They will not be grouped under “7-Zip” menu.

You can enable “Icons in context menu” option to show icons for all context menu options.

You can also add/remove options from 7-Zip context menu. Just check or uncheck desired items given under “Context menu items” section to add or remove them in 7-Zip context menu. For example, I always disable compress and email options from 7-Zip context menu as I never use them. You can also remove unwanted and unnecessary options from 7-Zip context menu using this method.

So you see customizing and removing 7-Zip context menu options is a very easy task. 7-Zip provides several options to change appearance of its context menu options.

    Windows 10 BUG

Please be aware of a well known (except, apparently, by Microsoft) bug in Windows 10 — if you change the “Open File Explorer to” This PC, and then add context menu items, you cannot use Windows Explorer properly because explorer.exe will automatically run the most recently added right click item. We have reported this bug here (with no response, as yet).

There is a temporary workaround you can use – if you add anything under the My Computer context menu, please check the box by “ My Computer (for Win 10 bug) ” entry as well. Then you’ll be able to use Windows Explorer normally.

Right click option provides a shortcut way to open any file immediately but sometimes it becomes problem because of lots of unwanted applications added on the right click menu.

Below is a screenshot of a my right click menu option. There are lots of options available such as scan with antivirus, Snagit, Winrar applications. This list goes long and long if I install some more applications. The longer the list, the longer the time it’ll take to load.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

You can remove any unwanted application from right click menu with the help of small registry hack.

Notice that there’s a ‘-‘ sign before the bracket in the edited data.

Now try right clicking on any file. The unwanted edited application (Snagit in this case) will be gone from the right click menu application list.

Edit Right click menu for folders

Right click menu for folders means when you right click on any folder then whatever menu options you get there. You can disable unwanted application from right click menu in folders also. The process is same. But you have to edit registry files of a different directory. Go to

Now repeat the process as you did with editing right click menu for files.

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

Again you have to edit the registry key to disable folders under ContextMenuHandlers directory. You can do this by following the same process and adding a minus sign to the Value data and clicking on OK button. Now right click on any folder to check that particular disabled application. Right click menu on folder will not display disabled application.

The right-click menu on the Mac is full of useful little features that appear specific to any item you’ve selected in Finder. For example, if you select an image and hit right-click, you’ll see menu options such as Set Desktop Picture. For almost every item type there’s a list of corresponding menu options that let you do something related to that item.

Unbeknown to most people, it’s possible to customise the right-click menu, either to add your own useful options or to remove some of those annoying customisations added by applications you may have installed. This tutorial shows you how to customise what’s shown.

    Customising the Right-Click Menu

Right-click any file or folder on your Mac and you’ll see a context menu similar to the one shown below. There are lots of options depending upon the type of item you’ve selected (it differs for files, images, and documents for example).

    ” data-medium-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-1-Menu-JPG1-300×265.jpg” data-large-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-1-Menu-JPG1.jpg” loading=”lazy” src data-src=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-1-Menu-JPG1.jpg” alt=”Pic 1 – Menu” width=”550″ height=”485″> Insert

To choose what’s displayed on the right-click menu, follow the steps below:

    1. Open System Preferences and then choose Keyboard from the Hardware section

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

    2. Select the Keyboard Shortcuts tab

    3. In the left-hand panel, select the Services icon

    4. Scroll down the list shown on the right until you see Files and Folders. It should be expanded by default, but if not just expand it to see all the options available. These control what happens when you right-click on files and folders only

    5. Check or uncheck every item that you want to be visible – in the example below I’d installed the anti-virus software ClamXav and chosen to hide it from the right-click menu earlier. You can also assign a keyboard shortcut by double-clicking the menu item and typing in any key combination

    ” data-medium-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-3-Keyboard-Shortcuts-JPG-300×193.jpg” data-large-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-3-Keyboard-Shortcuts-JPG.jpg” loading=”lazy” src data-src=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-3-Keyboard-Shortcuts-JPG.jpg” alt=”Pic 3 – Keyboard Shortcuts” width=”550″ height=”353″> Insert

    6. Next, you might need to kill the Dock process to make the changes happen (or just log out and log back in). Open Terminal (type it into Spotlight or find it in the Applications -> Utilities folder) and type killall Dock followed by the Enter key

    7. Go to Finder and right-click on any file or folder, and you’ll see the updated menu. For example, I selected Scan with ClamXav in the previous step and it now appears back in the menu as shown below

    ” data-medium-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-4-New-Item-JPG-300×280.jpg” data-large-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-4-New-Item-JPG.jpg” loading=”lazy” src data-src=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-4-New-Item-JPG.jpg” alt=”Pic 4 – New Item” width=”550″ height=”514″> Insert

    8. If you want to change any other folder actions, there are plenty of options – for example for highlighted text. Find the Text section to see options for when text is selected in any application (such as Mail). In this example I’ve checked Add Contact

    ” data-medium-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-5-Text-Shortcuts-JPG-300×190.jpg” data-large-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-5-Text-Shortcuts-JPG.jpg” loading=”lazy” src data-src=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-5-Text-Shortcuts-JPG.jpg” alt=”Pic 5 – Text Shortcuts” width=”550″ height=”349″> Insert

Now go to an app and enter some text (it makes sense to use a name in this example) and highlight it, select right-click and you should now see the item you added to the menu earlier, such as Add Contact as shown below.

    ” data-medium-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-6-Add-to-Contacts-JPG-265×300.jpg” data-large-file=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-6-Add-to-Contacts-JPG.jpg” loading=”lazy” src data-src=”https://www.chriswrites.com/wp-content/uploads/Article-2-Customise-Right-Click-Pic-6-Add-to-Contacts-JPG.jpg” alt=”Pic 6 – Add to Contacts” width=”530″ height=”600″> Insert

That’s all there is to it – you can add as many right-click options that will apply to any items you’ve selected in Finder!

How to remove skydrive pro from your right-click context menu

Though the right click menu is used frequently on Windows 10/8/7, users don’t want to see it randomly. However, some Windows users reported a problem: the right click menu is popping up now and then when there is not apparent trigger for it. It is so annoying that Windows users would like to find a solution to it.

On Windows, you’ll select an item by simply left clicking on it. If you want to open a file or folder, you should double click on it. However, if you want to change the properties of an item or do something more advanced, you should right click on it to bring up the right click menu, also called the context menu (you can also press Shift + F10 to bring up the right click menu).

MiniTool Solution is proficient in backing up system, recovering data, and solving disk problems.

Right Click Menu Keeps Popping Up on Windows 10

Many people reported the same weird issue: the right click menu keeps popping up on Windows 10 randomly. As for Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 users, they also come across the automatic right click problem sometimes. They said that the context menu will show up on their PC even if it is inactive and nothing is touched. How weird it is!

What Causes Automatic Right Click Problem Windows 10

There are mainly 3 reasons that should be responsible for the problem – right click menu pops up automatically.

    1. ClickLock feature is enabled: there’s a mouse feature called ClickLock. Whenever users plan to use it for dragging something on the PC, the context menu will show up randomly. In this case, you should disable it to avoid right click problem.
    2. Keyboard or mouse driver is damaged: according to users’ feedback, in the case where the driver of the keyboard or mouse is corrupted or incomplete, some keys will be triggered automatically even if they didn’t press any. In fact, users should run the built-in keyboard troubleshooter to settle down driver inconsistency.
    3. Keyboard has physical problems: in some cases, the right click menu keeps popping up because the mouse key is stuck. At that time, the only way to fix is trying to get the stuck key unstuck or buying a new keyboard.

How to Fix When Right Click Menu Pops up Automatically

    Solution 1: disable ClickLock.

    1. Press Start + I on the keyboard to open Settings panel.
    2. Choose Devices from the list.
    3. Navigate to the Mouse option from the left pane.
    4. Find Related settings section in the right pane.
    5. Click Additional mouse options.
    6. Find ClickLock under the Buttons tab.
    7. Uncheck the box in front of Turn on ClickLock.
    8. Click on the OK or Apply button at the bottom to confirm the change.

Solution 2: use the keyboard troubleshooter.

This can be a good way to fix automatic right click problem Windows 10 caused by file corruption or an incomplete driver.

    1. Press Start + I to open Settings.
    2. Scroll down to select Update & Security.
    3. Navigate to the Troubleshoot option from the left pane.
    4. Scroll down in the right pane to locate Find and fix other problems section.
    5. Choose Keyboard under it.
    6. Click on the Run the troubleshooter button appeared after last step.
    7. Wait for the diagnostics process to finish.
    8. Follow the fix and instructions given by system.

You can also run Troubleshooter to settle down Windows was unable to repair the drive.

Solution 3: check if there is a button pressed or not.

Users should open the on-screen keyboard utility to determine whether any keyboard keys are stuck.

    1. Press Start + I buttons to bring up Run dialog box.
    2. Type osk into the textbox and hit Enter on the keyboard.
    3. Look through all the buttons listed here to find out whether there is a key pressed (whose color will turn into blue).
    4. Try to get the stuck key unstuck.

In addition, you can try to update the device drivers to fix the error: right click menu keeps popping up Windows 10.

The Control Panel in Windows is one of the most useful tools on your desktop. To make it even easier to get there, you can add it to your right-click menu from anywhere with a simple tweak to your registry.

As tips site How-To Geek explains, you can add any program to your right-click menu with a very simple registry addition. While this process will work for anything, we’ll go through the steps for adding a shortcut to Control Panel:

    1. Open the Start menu and type “Regedit” to launch the registry editor. Click Yes to give it permission to edit your system.
    2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell
    3. Right-click “shell” and choose New > Key. Name it Control Panel (or the name of the app you want to add).
    4. Right-click the new “Control Panel” folder and choose New > Key. Name this one “command”.
    5. Click “command” in the left-hand panel.
    6. Double-click “Default” in the right-hand panel.
    7. Enter the following in the box that reads “Value data”: rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL

You should now have a link to Control Panel in your right-click menu immediately. This will show up when you right-click on the desktop or in Explorer, though it might not work in every program. If you want to adapt this to add other shortcuts, simply change the name in step 3, and paste the path to the program you want to add in step 7. If you don’t want to edit your registry manually, How-To Geek has some simple registry hacks you can run to automatically add or remove Control Panel to your context menu at the source link below.

The right click (context) menu is minimal and clean on a fresh installation of Windows. Install a bunch of applications and soon the context menu is loaded with all kinds of opening options from various applications.

How do I remove items from the right click (context) menu?

I find that there are different types of right click menu items:

Global items that appear in all context menus.

Items that appear only on folders.

Items that appear only on files.

Items that appear only on special folders (Ex: Right clicking a folder of MP3s shows up a context menu with items like Play with Windows Media Player.)

Items that appear only on certain file types (Ex: Right clicking a MP3 file shows up a context menu with items from Windows Media Player/Foobar2000/VLC/your-favorite-media-player begging to open this file.)

I want to be able to delete all these kinds items from the right click (context) menu.

I’ve written a lengthy explanation of how to clean up a messy context menu, using either the registry editor:

If you want to clean things up the truly geeky way, you can open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then browse down to one of the following keys…

Most of the menu items that used for all files and folders can be found by looking at one of these keys:

Items that are specific to folders can usually be found in one of these keys instead:

Or use some freeware NirSoft tools like ShellMenuView or ShellExView.

There are several “kinds” of menu handlers, however, so you could browse to any of the following and perhaps find stuff you want to get rid of:

When I right-click on any file, any file at all, explorer locks up and eventually re-starts. Looked for updates, can’t find anything. I recently updated from Windows 7. Probably it is one of the apps that tries to come up on the menu. I’m not sure how to debug this. “

Tired of the laundry list in your right-click menu? Easily fix it with a new feature in CCleaner.

Lots of tools claim to be useful for your PC. Whether an application cleans out junk files, duplicates, or other nasties, a lot of the time it wants to take a spot in your right-click menu. Supposedly, this is “for your convenience,” but most of us know what’s convenient and what’s just more bloat for Windows.

CCleaner released a recent update that added a feature that allows you to clean out random application shortcuts from the right-click menu. This is useful for those apps that either didn’t give you a choice in the matter, or those that used some sneakiness to make the option go unnoticed. Additionally, it’s much better (and likely safer) than manually digging through the registry.

So if you’re tired of having a right-click menu that’s just too bloated, here’s how to remedy the issue:

Already have CCleaner? Great! Just make sure it’s the latest version before you skip to the steps or you won’t have the necessary utility options. If you don’t have it installed, it’s time to grab a copy of CCleaner that will serve you well during the foreseeable future.

Step 1: Open CCleaner and click on the blue toolbox on the left-hand side labeled Tools, then click on the button labeled Startup.

Step 2: Next, click the tab for the Context Menu and select an entry you want to edit.

Tip: If you want to select multiple lines, just hold down the Ctrl key while you click each entry.

Step 3: Decide whether you want to delete or disable the entry. Disabling will leave the shortcut available for later use if you change your mind.

Which programs will you be removing from your right-click menu? And also, how many of your entries are for applications that didn’t give provide an option to stop them from being added to the list?

Right-click context menu options are really helpful. Depending on where you click and on what you click, you will be presented with a lot of relevant and useful options which are otherwise hard to access. But as you add programs to your system, the right-click menu can get cumbersome. On the flipside, even between all the options in the context menu, you may not find the option you want most. To deal with this, here are four of the best context menu editors for Windows.

    CCleaner

CCleaner is one of the most popular and widely used PC optimization and cleaning utilities for Windows. This simple piece of software is filled with so many features like registry optimization, duplicate file finder, startup optimizer, etc. But one of the lesser-known features of this software is that it can also be used to manage your Context Menu items so that you can easily disable or even delete them as needed.

To manage context menu items, install CCleaner, open it from the Start menu, navigate to “Tools -> Startup,” and then select the tab “Context Menu.” Here, select the context menu item you want to disable, and click on the “Disable” button. If you want to completely delete the item, click on the “Delete” button.
