How To Rename Conversations / Group Chats In iPhone’s Messages App

Apple’s Messages app, save a little occasional downtime to iMessage, provides a fairly solid and secure overall service, but customization is extremely limited. Your chat bubbles remain two colors, the background has the aura of the sky on a dull, wintry day and aside from the aesthetics, options regarding functionality are few and far between. Luckily for the jailbreakers, there are plenty of tweaks out there to rectify this, and one, which goes by the name of MessageRenamer, allows you to change the name of a conversation to anything you like.

If you compare Messages to, say, WhatsApp, the differences between two of the most popular IM services are plain for all to see. While the famous cross-platform app doesn’t offer the ability to send full-resolution images or video – very annoying – it can manage just about any other task with relative aplomb. If, say, you have a group conversation going, you can change the name to something relative to the participants, and this adds a nice personal touch to the whole service.

How to rename group chats in imessage

With MessageRenamer, you can do this with your native Messages app, and not only can you alter the name of group chats, but also individual conversations as well. Once you’ve downloaded and installed the tweak – which is, by the way, free – all you need to do is press and hold your finger on a conversation, and a pop-up menu makes an appearance. Then, you simply rename the chat to whatever you like, and that’s it – you’re done!

While it’s not exactly in the BiteSMS league of dramatic improvements to Messages, it does what it purports to do, and does it well. It’s only a small tweak, but it’s definitely useful to have in the arsenal – particularly if you have quite a lot of group chats going on and would like a convenient at-a-glance reference to them.

How to rename group chats in imessage

MessageRenamer is absolutely free of charge, and can be had right now over at the BigBoss repository, which should be a default in your Cydia source list provided you haven’t opted to delete it yourself. So download it, give it a spin, and be sure to leave your thoughts below!

In iOS 14, Apple has added several new features to its native Messages app, including the ability to set a group photo for a multi-person chat.

Setting a photo for a group conversation brings a neat bit of customization to the Messages app and it lets you identify the chat in your conversations list more easily.

You can also give group chats a custom name, which combined with a group photo, can add a bit of fun to your conversations with friends and family, or mark out a chat with colleagues to indicate a specific work project.

Group messages are great when you want to talk to multiple people at the same time. However, things can get disorderly real fast in the Messages app, especially if the same person is in multiple group conversations. That’s where custom group names come in, which helps you make sense of all those disorganized threads with multiple names/numbers attached.

Before diving into creating new group names in Apple’s Messages app, you should know that this only works for group iMessages. If it’s a group message that includes at least one person using SMS or MMS instead of iMessage, such as an Android user, you will not be able to name the group conversation. Also, custom group names only work in iOS 8 or higher for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

To give a group conversation a custom name, just open the conversation thread in Messages, then tap either the “i” (info) button or “Details” button in the top right, depending on your iOS version. On the next screen, tap on “Enter a Group Name” at the top and do just that (if you’re on an older iOS version, you may have to pull down from the top of the screen first to see this option). When ready, just hit “Done.”

How to rename group chats in imessage How to rename group chats in imessage How to rename group chats in imessage

Doing this will change the name of the group for every contact in the conversation, and iMessage will immediately add a tiny notification in the thread saying that you named the conversation and when. If they don’t like the name that you chose, they can also change it from their end; No name can be locked down by either party involved, so it may take a few back and forths until everybody is happy.
