Etsy is the place where small and medium creative entrepreneurs connect with customers to sell their perfectly crafted, unique masterpieces. The first thing you must do is register on the site. If you are planning to sell or just buy on Etsy you must set up an account first. The website has a direct link if you know from the beginning that you will become a seller at Etsy. You will see on the top right hand side, a link that reads, “Sell on Etsy”.
Once you register and confirm your email account you will be directed to a page where you will be asked for your “shop preferences”. This includes the default language you are going to use for your item descriptions, the country where you will be selling from and the currency your prices will be listed in. Make sure that you think this step carefully because many features are only available for certain markets and can’t be changed later on.
Now, you can start building your shop. You will be asked to select a shop name. It must be between 4-20 characters long, without spaces or special features, that includes no profanity and that hasn’t been used or trademarked already.
Once you have checked off your shop’s name from the list you can start listing your items. For each item you can add images including your thumbnail picture, add a category and tags, set up a price, calculate shipping prices, terms and conditions and write a killer description. The site will guide you through each step so you don’t have anything to worry about.
Before you open the shop and start selling you will be asked to select the payment methods you will accept (credit cards, paypal, gift cards, money order and other); as well as to include your billing options. For most countries, you will be asked to add a credit card for identity verification purposes and for selling fees.
The last link on the set up page will read, “Open your shop”. After you click on this link your shop will be open and you can start selling. Your Etsy shop can be accessed through a direct link that looks like this: https://www.etsy/shop/yourshopname. Don’t worry if you are unsure about some of the details you can modify your shop’s page later on.

Set your shop preferences
Select your shop’s language, country, currency, and time commitment:
- Shop language: The shop language you choose is the default language you use to describe your items. You won’t be able to change it later, but if you’d like to add translations in other languages, you will be able to enroll in other languages after opening your shop.
- Shop country: Be sure to select the correct country for your shop.
- Shop currency: Choose the currency you will use to price your listings. Currency conversion fees may apply if your bank’s currency is different from your shop currency.
- Time commitment: Select whether selling your products is your full-time job or part-time job. This question is for informational purposes only and will not affect the setup of your shop.
Choose your shop name
Choose a memorable name that reflects your style. Shop names must meet the following requirements:
- 4-20 characters in length
- No spaces or special characters
- No profanity
- Not already in use by an existing Etsy member
- Does not infringe on another’s trademark
If the shop name you entered is in use, you will see suggestions for other shop names that are still available. Your shop name will be held for you while you open your shop.
Stock your shop
Add product listings to your shop —you’re almost ready for your big shop debut.
Choose how you’ll get paid
Choose the payment methods you want to offer in your shop. If you’re in an eligible country , you’ll use Etsy Payments . Etsy Payments gives buyers many options to pay for their order, and consolidates all payments in your Etsy Payment account.
If you’re in a country that is not eligible for Etsy Payments, you’re welcome to use your own PayPal account to accept payments.
Set up billing
Depending on which country you’re in, you may need to enter a credit or debit card to open your shop. The card should be a:
- American Express
- Carte Bleue (France)
We ask sellers in certain countries to keep a credit or debit card on file as a means of identity verification. You may see an authorization charge to verify the card you entered on file. As soon as the card has been verified, the charge will be dropped from your statement.
Your card information is secure with Etsy.
You can also add a prepaid card to your account if you already have a credit or debit card. A non-reloadable prepaid card can’t be your only or primary payment card, but you can always pay your bill manually with a non-reloadable prepaid card.
Sellers located in Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands aren’t required to have a credit card on file.
Open your shop
When you finish all the sections, click Open Your Shop. You’ll always be able to make changes to your shop after it’s open.

You can personalize your Etsy shop in any number of ways. This personalization is critical to ensuring that your Etsy business stands out from the crowd and helps promote your brand. And anyway, it’s fun!
- Add a cover photo. A cover photo is a graphic that runs across the top of your shop’s main page. You can create a cover photo from scratch by using any number of graphics programs.
- Include a shop title and shop announcement. Think of your shop title as a tag line of sorts. It briefly sums up what your shop is about. In contrast, your shop announcement trumpets what you sell, the types of materials or ingredients you use, or your artistic philosophy. Your shop announcement could also broadcast when your next sale will be.
- Populate your shop’s About section. Sharing your shop’s story in the About section helps garner additional interest in you and your shop among buyers.
- Use sections to organize your goods. If you sell different types of items — say, magnets, notebooks, and picture frames — you can use sections to organize your shop by item. Even if you don’t sell different types of items — maybe you’re all about knit caps — you can use sections to organize your goods by, say, yarn type, size, or price.
- Choose a strong shop icon. Your shop icon is the image that represents your store across Etsy. Be sure to select a shop icon that reflects well on you and your shop.
Pricing Your Work for Your Etsy Business
Running a profitable Etsy business means being comfortable with doing a little math — especially when pricing your pieces. Putting a price on your Etsy creations may seem challenging, but don’t freak out! You’re not dealing with calculus here, or even trigonometry. To price pieces for your Etsy business, all you need are two simple formulas:
Wholesale Price = (Materials + Labor + Overhead) × 2
Retail Price = Wholesale Price × 2
When you calculate the costs of your materials, you need to consider only the price of what you used to produce one piece, not everything you actually bought. Labor costs are your hourly rate multiplied by the time spent to make one piece. Overhead costs consist of what you need to run your business, such as tools, office supplies, and the like (but not shipping costs).
Note that, in the second formula, you multiply the wholesale price by 2 to determine the retail price. Some sellers may choose a higher number, multiplying the wholesale price by 2.5 or even 3 to determine the retail price (assuming that the market will bear that). The multiplier you choose is really up to you.
Composing Product Photos for Your Etsy Business
Great product photos can boost sales for your Etsy business, but you don’t need to hire a professional photographer (although you can). Composing your own photos for Etsy is a breeze. As you shoot your pieces, keep these compositional points in mind:
Angle the camera. Angling, or tilting, the camera puts the subject slightly off-center and creates movement and flow. The result is a more dynamic, intriguing image.
Shoot tight. Filling the frame with your subject not only adds visual impact but also enables potential buyers to see how well made your piece is.
Blur the background. By using a shallow depth of field (read: a low f-stop setting on your camera), you can blur the background, dramatically highlighting your piece. When the background is blurred, you can shoot in almost any setting; just make sure that the background colors don’t clash with your subject.
Less is more. Don’t crowd the scene with extraneous objects. Otherwise, potential buyers may not understand exactly which item in your photo is for sale.
Frame your subject. One way to draw the viewer’s eye to your piece is to frame it — that is, place some darker element in the perimeter. This technique helps keep the viewer’s eye from straying from your item.
Group pieces together. Especially if you make itsy-bitsy goodies, you can try grouping them to catch a buyer’s eye. Not only does this make for a more eye-catching photograph, but it also shows potential buyers how pieces in your collection work together.
Use the rule of thirds. Divide the scene you’re photographing into nine equal parts by using two horizontal lines and two vertical lines (like a tic-tac-toe grid); place key elements at one of the four points where the vertical and horizontal lines intersect. In addition to conveying a sense of tension and energy, this helps pique the viewer’s interest.
3 Keys to Composing Effective Etsy Listing Titles
Your listing title in Etsy acts like a good headline. It’s designed to grab a buyer’s attention. It also factors into Etsy’s search system. That means your listing title must do double duty: piquing a buyer’s interest and being optimized for search. When composing listing titles, keep these three points in mind:
- Keep it short. Your item title must be brief — no more than 140 characters (including spaces).
- Clearly describe your item at the beginning of the item title. This helps improve the chances that others will find your item when searching on Etsy.
- Use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters. Too many all-uppercase words, and it seems like you’re shouting. Too many lowercase words, and it seems like you’re trying to be e. e. Cummings.
Marketing Your Etsy Business
Etsy recognizes the importance of marketing your business — which is why it offers several built-in promotional tools. Marketing on Etsy is easy when you use these tools:
Promote your listings on Etsy. With Etsy Promoted Listings, you can improve the ranking of your listings within Etsy search results when prospective buyers enter specific keywords.
Promote your listings on Google. Google Shopping enables you to reach buyers outside Etsy. It works by propelling your listing to the top of the page (or closer to it) when people enter certain search criteria into Google’s search engine.
Create coupon codes for your shop. Coupons increase sales, increase branding and awareness, reward current customers, and entice former customers to return.
Post shop updates. Use shop updates to offer a sneak peek at a new item, announce an upcoming sale, or just share a cute picture of your dog in your studio. All of this helps to embed your shop firmly in the “shoppocampus” portion of your buyer’s brain.
Etsy is one of the largest and most successful online marketplaces, but it’s not a general-purpose marketplace; the site specializes in creative goods such as handcrafted and vintage items.
If you have a product that feels appropriate for the Etsy community, it’s easy to set up your own storefront and start selling on Etsy.
How to sell on Etsy
Getting started is simple — Etsy makes it easy to configure a storefront and list your first product.
1. Open Etsy’s website in a browser and scroll to the bottom of the page. In the footer, click “Sell on Etsy” in the Sell column.
2. Click “Open your Etsy shop.”
3. In the pop-up window, sign in (if you are already an Etsy user) or create a new account. If Etsy recognizes your email address, you’ll be prompted to enter your password. If not, you can create a new account.
4. Create the settings for your shop. You’ll start on the Shop preferences page, where you specify details like the shop language, country, and currency. In the lower-right corner, click “Save and continue.”
5. Continue following the workflow to name your shop, add one or more listings, and set up payment and billing.
6. When you add a listing, be sure to include photos of the product and a short video if possible. If you’re not sure how well a product will sell, you might want to choose a manual renewal in the Renewal options section to avoid having recurring renewal charges for an item that generates no revenue. Otherwise, the form should be fairly straightforward to complete, particularly if you have ever created a product listing on another marketplace such as eBay — you’ll need to specify the price and shipping details, for example, so the buyer can be properly charged for the shipping fee. You can preview your listing and then click “Save and continue” when you’re done.
7. Complete the initial setup by selecting your payment method on the “How you’ll get paid” page and billing information in “Set up billing.” After you complete this page, click “Open your shop” and your Etsy store is live.
8. At the top of the page, click “Shop Manager” to see a dashboard for your store, add new listings, manage sales and shipping, and more. You can also go here to fine-tune your shop’s appearance, add a description and graphic, and track your store’s performance.
Understanding Etsy’s costs
There are three main kinds of fees you need to pay when setting up and maintaining an Etsy shop:
Becoming an Etsy seller is a simple matter of setting up a shop on the site and listing items. It’s a good idea to review Etsy’s policies to make sure you’re items fit into an Etsy category.
1 Click the Sell link in the upper-left corner of the main page.
The Sell page appears. This page reminds you what you can and can’t sell on Etsy.
2 Click the Open an Etsy Shop button.
Etsy prompts you to choose a language, currency, and country for your shop.
Although most Etsy sellers hail from the ol’ U. S. of A. — which is one reason the site’s default currency is the U.S. dollar — plenty of Etsy sellers call other countries home.
If you’re in that latter group, or if you find that your buyers tend to be clustered in a particular region abroad, you can list items and receive payments in a different currency (assuming that it’s one of the other 20-plus currencies supported, including those of Australia, Canada, the European Union, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and more).
3 If your shop language is English, your shop currency is the U.S. dollar, and your shop country is United States, simply click Yes. If not, click the No, I Want to Choose link; choose the desired language, currency, and shop country; and click Save.
Etsy saves your changes and prompts you to select a shop name.
4 Click the Enter Your Shop Name link.
The Shop Name screen appears.
5 Type the name you’d like to use for your shop and click Save.
Assuming no other seller has beaten you to the punch and selected your shop name already, Etsy assigns to your shop the name you typed.

If you answered YES to any or all of these questions, you are ready to plunge into the wonderful world of Etsy! Etsy is an online marketplace for buying and selling all things handmade. There are a several very easy steps to begin selling your items on Etsy.
1. You need to sign up! This is the easiest part. Go to Etsy.com and click on register. You will need to choose a username and password. This user name will become your shop’s web address so CHOOSE WISELY!
2. Once you have filled out the initial sign-up page you will need to wait for a confirmation email from Etsy. When it arrives, click through the link in the email and you will be confirmed on Etsy. They will ask you to log in with your username and password. You didn’t forget it already did you? ☺
3. Once you are logged in, click on the word SELL at the top of the home page. This is where Etsy will guide you through the steps to get your shop started. Their directions are so clear, I’m going to leave you to read through and follow the steps. This will include entering address information, billing information as well as a credit card number. Don’t worry, no charges, just important to validate you are indeed a real human being. Read on when you are all set to sell!
4. There are several items you should have ready before you even list your first item.
• PUBLIC PROFILE
Click on the words Public Profile in the left margin. You will be directed to a place to upload a photo of yourself, your AVATAR. Then add your location, and other important information. The next thing you will need to add is your BIO.
This is exactly what it says…a mini biography about you. Keep it short, keep it simple, but do it. People want to buy from a person, not a store. That is why they are shopping on Etsy in the first place, so make them want to buy from you! Shop around read other artists bios. What do you like about them? What appeals to you? Use that info to get you started…but DO IT!
• SHOP SETUP

When it comes to starting a small business, especially if it is related to the handmade world, Etsy is one of the first options for selling goods online people find out about. Many business owners start their adventures on this platform and a great number of them keep their shop open way after they have reached a good level of recognition and have their own standalone website. That’s my exact case: I started my graphic design shop 8 years ago and even though most of my sales come from my own website now, I still keep my presence on Etsy because it is where most of my new clients find out about me. Another reason why I like it and why I will probably keep my shop there for many years to come is that it is a really cheap e-commerce option when you compare it with other solutions out there. But what is the real cost of opening and running an Etsy shop? Is it really worth it as a way of starting your business? Let’s find out!
How much does it cost to open an Etsy shop?
That would be the first thing you need to consider, right? Well, opening an Etsy doesn’t cost a cent. You read right. You just need to create an account and associate a debit/credit card to pay for your transaction fees once you start listing and selling products. There is neither an initial fee nor a mandatory monthly cost for just having your shop running. However, you could upgrade your account by paying for an Etsy Plus subscription, which would grant you some extra features such as advanced shop customization options and advertising credits.
How much does it cost to upload a product?
Each time you add a new product to your shop, Etsy will charge $0.20. This product listing will last for 4 months or until it sells. If those 4 months expired and you haven’t sold the product, you can renew the listing for another $0.20. So let’s say you have 25 products ready before opening your shop. The cost of uploading your initial collection would be $5.00.

What are the transaction fees when I sell a product?
They can be divided into 2 parts:
– The actual transaction fee: you will be charged 5% of the item price including the shipping cost.
– Payment processing fees: these are variable depending on your bank’s country. They go from 3% to 4% depending on the country + around $0.25 per sale including shipping. You can check out the fees for your country on this link.
Transaction and payment processing fees will be added to your Etsy payment account, being directly subtracted from any money you haven’t transferred to your bank yet. If you don’t have any money sitting on your Etsy account, you can decide to pay your Etsy bill whenever you want each month.
So what is the monthly cost of running an Etsy shop? A couple of examples
Let’s illustrate it using 2 different cases. For the purpose of these examples, let’s say these shops are based on the United States and we won’t take shipping fees into consideration (you will normally adjust them so they don’t cost you).
– On the first one, we are talking about a small shop with 30 products, which makes an average number of sales of 10 per month at an average item price of $35.00. This could be the case of jewelry designers who run their shop on their free time. The monthly fees would be:
- Renewing/adding new products: you have 30 products that you need to renew 3 times a year (because each listing last for 4 months). That makes an average of 7.5 renewals a month. We also need to add the fee for renewing or uploading new items after each sale. That would add 10 renewals. Of course, these two numbers could overlap in different ways depending on the number of new items you add to your shop on a monthly basis. We will use 17.5 renewals a month for the sake of example. The total fee would be $3.50.
- Etsy transaction fees: with 10 sales at an average price of $35.00, your shop would make $350.00 a month. $17.50 would be added to your bill as transaction fees.
- Payment processing fees: these would be 3% of $350.00 + $0.25 per sale. The total fee would be $13.00.
To sum up, you would have made $316.00 after paying $34.00 on your Etsy bill.
– As a second example, let’s say we have a much bigger shop: 125 products with an average number of sales of 40 per month and an average item price of $60.00. We could be talking about a vintage shop. The monthly fees would be:
- Renewing/adding new products: following the same logic as in the previous case, there would be 31.25 renewals a month because of expired items and 40 for adding a new item after each sale. The listing fees would be around $14.25.
- Etsy transaction fees: the shop would make $2400 a month so the fee would be $120.00.
- Payment processing fees: these would be 3% of $2400 + $0.25 per sale. The total fee would be $82.00.
We would end up making $2183.75 after paying $216.25 on Etsy bill and PayPal fees.
There are also other ways you can spend money on Etsy like promoting your items by using Etsy Advertising or creating a standalone website with Pattern but those are completely optional. Keep in mind that the month you don’t sell a single product, which would probably be the case if you were starting, you only have to take care of the renewal/adding new listings fees, which are absolutely laughable.
I don’t want to start talking about other e-commerce options because this article would be endless but I think these numbers are a good way to understand the value of this platform, even if you don’t know about other tools to compare it with. For me, Etsy is a huge opportunity for small business owners to show their products to the world or simply for people with a passion who want to take it to the next level in their spare time. In my opinion, these low fees and the ability to automatically connect with a ton of buyers internationally, are the main reasons why it is worth trying.

Decide on pricing
Deciding on the right price for your handmade, vintage and craft goods can be tricky. You need to consider how much it costs you to make your items, including materials, the time spent and other equipment you may need. Check out the pricing of your competitors, and ask friends and family for their opinions.
List your items
The final step is to add items to your store. Whether you only have a few items to sell, or a full range of items you’ve made or designed, make sure you add pictures that bring out the true quality of your products. You’ll also need to include a title for your item, a description and tags.
Selling on Etsy basics
You can only sell handmade, vintage or craft supplies on Etsy. Handmade items must be made by the seller, or designed by you (even if they are created with the help of an outside manufacturer). Check out Etsy’s handmade policy for more information.
Vintage items must be at least 20 years old, and craft supplies are defined by Etsy as materials, tools or ingredients intended for creating new handmade items.
It’s free to join Etsy and set up your shop, but there are fees when you start listing your items for sale. It costs £0.13 for each listing added to the marketplace, the transaction fee on a sale is 3.5% of the sale price, and if you choose to accept payments via Etsy’s Direct Payments system, there is a 4% + £0.20 payment processing fee for each item sold.

These are important for getting your products found on Etsy and in search engines such as Google. The title should be an accurate description of your item and include relevant keywords such as “t-shirt” or “jewellery”.
The description is also worth putting some effort into as it gives you a chance to talk directly to your customers in your own voice, tell a unique story about your item and answer any questions customers may have.
Tags are also a great place to include relevant keywords about your item – these are the words your buyers would use when looking for your item, so make sure you get specific! Keep in mind things like texture, style, size and colour.
Words can only do so much to describe your handmade, vintage and craft goods. You need quality pictures to get your items noticed, shared on social media and to show off their true worth. For each listing, you have one main photo and space for four additional photos, which means you can include different angles of the item you’re selling.
To get great pictures, choose a background that will complement your item, use the macro mode on your camera to get close-up shots if photographing small objects, and avoid using flash mode. Also use props to show the scale and size of items like jewellery, and if your items can be worn, consider using a live model.
Once your Etsy shop is set up and you’re starting to get visitors, you can start to see your shop stats. By going to Your Shop > Shop Stats you can see what items are bringing people to your shop, the most viewed items and the keywords being used to find your items in Etsy Search.
Pay close attention to this information as it can help you see what’s working and what isn’t. For example, if customers are mostly visiting a certain type of product but there is a limited number available, you may want to create more to meet demand, and make more sales!

This is a walk-through of how you can easily setup your Etsy Print on Demand shop so that your Etsy orders are automatically fulfilled and tracked. The print on demand production partner we’ll be using is Printful.
First thing’s first. Head over to https://www.etsy.com/sell and then follow the steps below.
The first page after sign-up sorts out your shop preferences. A very simple page which just asks language, country and currency.
The next page asks you to name your shop. At this point you might have a problem if you haven’t yet decided on your niche and what type of items you are thinking of selling (t-shirts, mugs, phone cases, etc..). It is not required, but I highly recommend that your shop name reflects the theme of the niche/products you are offering.
You can check the availability of your chosen shop name like in the picture below.
Once you have chosen a good name for your shop you’ll get to the page which asks you to load your first product. You can temporarily load whatever image you want here as it won’t be live until you pay the $0.20 to have it activated.
The screenshot above only shows the top of the page which is the picture loading part of the page. Immediately below are a few boxes to fill out description , price etc. Nothing too complicated. You are asked who made the product. This part is important. You need to let Etsy (and your customers) know that you designed the product, but you have partner that produces it.
IMPORTANT : always be truthful and upfront with Etsy and your customers about processing and shipping. Remember that Print on Demand is allowed on Etsy so have no fear!
At this point you should go to settings and add a partner as shown in the example image below. Add Printful as your partner then in the next box add something like Print on Demand. Then add one of their production addresses. I use the one in California:

Be sure and hide your production partner’s name. We don’t want our competitors knowing who we’re using to fulfill our orders.
There are 3 drop down questions whose answers are pretty obvious Answer them and then that’s it!
The ‘stock your shop’ page suggests you load 10 products but you really need to just load the one and move on to integrating with Printful.
Now that your Etsy shop is live you will need to create a Printful account. After confirming your Printful account you are taken to the page below. You need to choose the box on the left to choose your platform.
Printful integrates with quite a few sales platforms, but we obviously need to choose Etsy here.
After clicking ‘Etsy’ on this page, you’ll be sent to Etsy and asked if you want to integrate. There is a big green button at the bottom of the page that says “Allow Access.” CLICK IT!
Once access has been granted you are able to begin uploading your designs to Printful using their tools, and push them straight through to Etsy. Not only can you upload/create your design, but you can create your entire product listing in Printful (title, description, etc..). The product specification is pre-populated by Printful already, but I recommend punching up your descriptions as your listing will sell better if you do. The listing will sit in the back end of your Etsy Store as a draft until you authorize the spending of $0.20 listing fee which is good for 4 months or until the item is sold. When setting your prices remember to account for up to 10% in total fees that will be taken out per sale. There is the $0.20 Etsy listing fee, a 5% Etsy commission, and a
3% + $0.30 merchant fee per sale.
Printful has a pretty good mock up generator. Here is an example of what their print on demand mockups look like. In addition to creating/editing your listing in Printful, you also have the ability to edit images and descriptions inside Etsy too.
Once you have mastered how to get your products looking nice you need to fill up your new Etsy print on demand shop with more print on demand designs. Aim for at least 10, but honestly, the more the better.
The final step is to add your payment info to Printful to pay for your orders as they come in. You won’t be charged until you actually sell one of your print on demand designs. That’s the beauty of the Etsy print on demand business model!
