How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

Have you ever wondered how to sign into two or more Skype accounts at once? The number of people using Skype are increasing on a daily basis. In fact, we can see that many people have multiple Skype accounts, one for official use and another one for personal use. Even though Skype does not provide a clear cut answer to it, by following a few tips and tricks, you can sign into two or more Skype accounts at once.

What is Skype?

Skype is an application from Microsoft. It provides video chat and voice calls at zero cost. With the help of a microphone and webcam, you can communicate with other Skype users easily. Skype also allows users to have group calls so that you can connect with family and friends. A user can sign into multiple Skype accounts via the Web, Windows, MAC and Linux through Skype applications. There are many reasons you might want to sign in to multiple Skype accounts at once, such as being on a business trip and talking with the office, while needing to say good night to your child at home.

Uses of Skype

Skype offers more features than just video and audio calls. Some of the main uses of Skype are

  1. File Transfer: Skype allows a user to transfer files from one system to another through Skype.
  2. Conference Calling: Skype Conference calling feature helps a user to communicate with a group of people just like you talk in a conference meeting.
  3. Ability to call to a landline or mobile number: Skype also offers users features such as the ability to call a landline or mobile number. The charge for calling the number is low compared to other calling services.

Steps to Sign into Two or More Skype Accounts at Once in Windows

  1. Using the Web and Windows Version: The web version of Skype is available now. Using Web version, a user can do voice calls and video calls. If a user has multiple Skype accounts, then it is easy to sign into multiple Skype accounts at once. A user can sign into one Skype account using the version that is running in your computer and at the same time log into web.skype.com and connect to Skype using another account at the same time.

If there is no Skype installed in your computer, then you can use a different browser to connect to Skype Web version and sign into it using another user profile. Through this way, it is easy to sign into two or more Skype accounts at once.

  1. Using Multiple Instances: A user can launch multiple versions of Skype with the help of the following command. Go to command prompt in your 64 bit version of Windows. Enter the value “C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe”\secondary. By entering this command, a user can open multiple instances of Skype. Now log into Skype using another account. By repeating the command, a user can open different instances of Skype in his machine and then sign into Skype with different accounts.

Skype also allows MAC and Linux users to connect to two or more Skype accounts at once. However, with MAC and Linux the steps are not as easy as with Windows.

Conclusion

By following these tips and tricks it is easy for a user to connect to two or more Skype accounts at once.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

Skype doesn’t offer an obvious way to use multiple accounts at the same time. You don’t have to log out and log back in — you can sign into as many Skype accounts as you want via the web, Windows, Mac, or Linux Skype applications.

This may be helpful if you have separate Skype accounts for personal use and work, for example. No such tricks are available for Android, iPhone, or iPad — you’re stuck with a single account on the mobile Skype apps.

This has become easier now that there’s a web version of Skype available. The web version even supports voice and video chats on Windows and Mac OS X.

If you’re already running Skype on your computer, you can simply open the Skype web app at web.skype.com and log in with a secondary user account. You’ll then be using two different Skype accounts at the same time.

To use even more user accounts, you could open your browser’s incognito or private-browsing mode and sign into Skype from there — you could have one account signed in in normal-browsing mode and a second in private-browsing mode. Or, use multiple different web browsers (or even browser profiles) to sign into as many different accounts as you want on Skype for web.

Windows

To launch a second Skype application on Windows, press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog, copy-paste the below command into it, and press Enter.

On a 64-bit version of Windows — you’re probably using a 64-bit version of Windows — run the following command:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe” /secondary

On a 32-bit version of Windows, run the following command:

“C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe” /secondary

You can repeat this process to open a third, fourth, and other additional copies of Skype. Sign into each Skype window with a new account.

(If you installed Skype to a different folder on your computer instead of the default one, you’ll have to change the above commands to point at the Skype.exe file on your computer.)

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

You can create a shortcut to make this easier. Open a File Explorer or Windows Explorer window and navigate to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\” on a 64-bit version of Windows or “C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\” on a 32-bit version. Right-click the Skype.exe file and select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).

Go to your desktop, right-click the Skype shortcut you created, and select Properties. In the Target box, add /secondary to the end. For example, on a 64-bit version of Windows, it should look like:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe” /secondary

Give the shortcut a name like “Skype (Second Account)”. You can keep double-clicking this shortcut to open additional instances of Skype.

Skype doesn’t offer a built-in way to do this on Mac OS X as it does on Windows. Common methods for doing this recomend you use the “sudo” command to run Skype as the root (administrator) account — don’t do that, it’s a very bad idea for security. You could create a secondary user account for each version of Skype you want to use, but there’s a better, cleaner option that makes each Skype program run under your same user account.

Rather than creating a new user account for Skype, you can run additional copies of Skype on your same user account and point each of them at a different data folder. Launch a Terminal and run the following command:

open -na /Applications/Skype.app –args -DataPath /Users/$(whoami)/Library/Application\ Support/Skype2

To sign into a third copy of Skype, replace “Skype2” with “Skype3” and run the command again. Repeat this process as many times as you need to. Thanks to Matthew Scharley on Super User for this trick.

Linux

Skype also offers a “secondary” option on Linux. To open another Skype instance, launch a terminal (or press Alt+F2 to access your desktop’s run dialog), and run either of the following commands:

Run the command again to open even more Skype instances. As on Windows and Mac, you can sign into each Skype window with a separate user account.

Using multiple Skype accounts at the same time can help you keep an eye on different areas of your life simultaneously. You can use one account for work conversations and business calls, one to keep in touch with your family, and another to hang out and make plans with your friends. Either way, it doesn’t make sense to keep signing in and out, when you can have multiple Skype accounts running alongside on your Windows 10 computer or device. Here’s how:

How to access two Skype accounts from different Skype apps in Windows 10

While Skype is not designed to run in multiple instances, like other apps in Windows 10, you can launch the Skype app twice on your computer or device to access two different accounts.

That is because there are two versions of the app you can have on your Windows 10 PC at the same time: the Windows app that comes with Windows 10 and the “classic” Skype desktop app, which you can download from here.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

To learn more about the differences between the two types of apps, read What is a Windows app? What is a desktop application? How are they different?.

After downloading and installing the desktop Skype app on your Windows 10 computer or device, you can log in with different credentials on each app. The steps are the same for both versions but, if you need help, read our tutorial on how to use Skype on Windows 10.

Using two accounts allows you to make group calls on your Skype work account, while keeping an eye on any personal messages from your loved ones at the same time. You can even use the two apps in split-screen mode, side by side, if you are having several important conversations at once.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

While the two apps appear almost identical, the desktop Skype app has some improvements over the default Windows 10 one. One difference of note we came across can help with your privacy while sharing your screen and, for more details about it, you can read How to share the screen on Skype.

When you’re using both apps at the same time, telling them apart can be a challenge, as they both display the same S icon in the taskbar. However, there are some tricks you can use to tell them apart.

First, let’s see how you can tell which app you are launching. In your Start Menu, you can access the Windows 10 app directly. However, the Skype desktop app has its own folder. Open the Start Menu and scroll down to the letter S. You can see a Skype folder and a Skype shortcut. The icon for the Skype shortcut is a blue S on a white background – that is the pre-installed Windows 10 app.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

Clicking or tapping on the folder reveals another Skype shortcut. This time, the S is white on a blue background. This is the Skype desktop app. Decide which account to use for each app.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

In Windows 10, you can also create new shortcuts for the two Skype apps and change their icons to avoid further confusion when opening them.

There are also tricks you can use to tell the two Skype apps apart while they are running. The title bar is gray for the pre-installed Windows 10 app and blue for the desktop Skype app you downloaded.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

If you look in the system tray from the lower-right corner of your screen, the icons displayed for the two apps are also different. The desktop app’s icon is green here, making it way easier to recognize, while the Windows 10 app keeps the classic blue Skype look.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

If you need to use two different Skype accounts on a regular basis, having both apps on your Windows 10 PC makes the most sense. However, what if you don’t feel like downloading and installing an additional app? Or you need access to even more than two Skype accounts? Well, as you’re about to see, there is always Skype for Web.

How to use multiple Skype accounts with Skype for Web

Getting another Skype app on your Windows 10 computer or device can be a hassle. Luckily, Microsoft came up with Skype for Web, which is meant to offer a similar experience in your web browser, but lets you use a different account from the one connected through the Windows 10 app. Skype for Web is also a viable alternative to use multiple Skype accounts at the same time, because it is available on Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Vivaldi. You can access a different Skype account from each browser. However, on Opera and Vivaldi, you can only use it for chat, so we recommend accessing Skype for Web with Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge if you want to make calls or share your screen. Open your browser, access the Skype for Web page, and sign in with your credentials.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

After a few moments, the familiar Skype interface should load in your browser, and you can start using it. If you need even more Skype accounts logged in at the same time, there is always Incognito mode or Private Browsing. Go incognito, and you can log one more account for each of the browsers that support Skype for Web.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

That’s it! Now you can decide on the most comfortable way to open all the Skype accounts you need in Windows 10.

How many Skype accounts do you have?

Following the advice in this tutorial, you should be able to access around ten Skype accounts at the same time. We hope that’s enough for even the most sociable users. However, we would like to know how many Skype accounts you have right now. What do you use each of them for? Leave us a comment below with your answer.

Here’s a neat little trick that will enable you to be logged into multiple Skype accounts at the same time on one computer (Windows only). It’s really easy to do, and it can save you lots of time and trouble if you have more Skype accounts and need them to be all online and available at the same time.

This should be obvious, but before we go through theese 3 easy steps, make sure you have already downloaded and installed Skype on your computer. That’s all you need for this to work. There is no need for any additional programs or tools to be downloaded. Even though there are some additional tools that enable you to run multiple Skype accounts on one computer, we have a better, easier way of accomplishing that. Let’s go over the steps.

1. Run Skype and login with one of your accounts as you would normally do. After you are logged in, don’t close Skype.

2. From Start menu > Run (or press the Windows and R keys on your keyboard at the same time). Or, alternatively, you can type “run” in the search box, and click on the first result of “run” as in the screenshot below. A “run” box should pop up.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

3. In this step, we actually run another instance of Skype which will enable you to log in with one of your other accounts while you are still logged in with the account you used in the step one. In other words, this is it. This is what we want to do.

This step requires you to know where you installed Skype. It will depend on whether it is on local disk C, or D, or some other letter, depending on your Windows configuration. Most of the times, it will be local disk C, so what you need to do now is copy-paste one of the following paths exactly as they are (with quotation marks and the slash part) into the “run” form which you just opened in step 2 and click “OK”.

For 32-bit operating systems copy this:

“C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe” /secondary

For 64-bit operating systems copy this:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe” /secondary

If you don’t know if your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit, just try the one for 64-bit first. If you get an error, try copying the other one instead.

The screenshot below is how it should look like. The entire path can’t fit, so it shows a part of it only, it’s not a mistake (“rogram Files”).

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

After you clicked “OK”, now you should see another instance of Skype popping out, and asking you to log in even though you are already logged in with one of your accounts. This is where you log in with your other account. Log in as you normally do, and voila, now you are logged in with two accounts at the same time, and you’re available on both of them.

As you can see on the screenshot below, I have two instances of Skype running. One where I’m logged in, and another one where I can log in with another account at the same time.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

Yes, you can use more than two accounts this way. Dont close the ones you opened, and just repeat the step 3 as many times as you like for as many Skype accounts as you want to be logged into at the same time. Each time it asks you for username and password, you use your different accounts, and that’s how you log in with all of them at the same time all at once and all on one computer.

Brilliant, i know.

When Using Office 365 (Home or Business), did you know you can set up multiple Microsoft accounts to be available to you when working on and saving documents?

What do I mean by this? Well, for those of us using either Office 365 consumer or O365 Business, we know that we should get our apps set up by signing into our Microsoft account when first getting set up.

For example, open up Word and click ‘File’ to get to the backstage view, then scroll down to ‘Account’ and click on it. If you’ve never signed up, you will most likely get a prompt to do so. If you’re at work, you’ll enter in your business O365 credentials. If you’re using O365 Home, you can enter in one of your Microsoft accounts.

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

You see in the illustration that I’m signed into a Microsoft account. But look below that and you can see I’ve connected my O365 Business account as well. So I’m using multiple accounts – efficient!

Video of How To Add Your Microsoft Accounts

I did a short video to show you how to sign in and personalize your Microsoft Office desktop apps experience.

I also did a SlideShare you can look at or download that highlights the top things to do once you buy Office 365.

Office 365 Business Accounts

Now if you’re at work, you probably won’t want to connect any personal accounts, just your business O365 account.

After you’ve signed in with your business credentials, you’ll want to connect, or add-in both your SharePoint sites and your ODB (OneDrive for Business). You do this in the backstage view – look for connected services at the bottom (see illustration above).

Office 365 Personal Accounts

If you have Office 365 Home (the $99/year subscription service), you’ll be able to add multiple Microsoft accounts to your desktop apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

How to sign into two or more skype accounts at once

For my situation, I work from home, so I don’t mind having both my business O365 and personal O365 accounts all together on one computer. On this work station, I have 3 accounts and I can switch among them if I wish.

However, I really don’t need to because I’m able to save my documents into either my ODB, SharePoint or OneDrive consumer since I’ve connected all these services on my computer.

When I do a ‘Save As’ command, you’ll see I’m presented with three OneDrive or SharePoint choices. I can also choose to save to the local drive (Computer) if I wish.

This gives users a way and choice to put documents in the storage of their choosing.

I hope this was helpful and perhaps gives you some ideas to make your own work flow more convenient and productive.

Valuable information and excellent design you got here! I would like to thank you for sharing your thoughts and time into the stuff you post!! Thumbs up

Which does not of course answer the question of whether you can have multiple licenses for Office 365 personal. I’m presuming that if you tried it on the same credit card, Microsoft would consolidate your purchases into one license. I tried to buy one for an elderly couple who can’t manage anything themselves on my card and they overwrote my personal license for Office365 and it was a nightmare straightening it out.

What a mess – sorry to hear about that. I’ve not tried to have 2 personal O365 licenses. That’s a good thing to keep in mind if I want to do that.

I do have a Biz 365 and a personal 365 which were set up with 2 different credit cards, so no problems there.

What did MSFT say about it? Did they let you know what happened? Curious about that. Thanks for your comment and experience.

Hi Lynn,
So far, your post is the best explanation I have seen about a user successfully managing Microsoft 365 Personal and 365 Business on the same machines. It gives me hope!

Here’s my situation:

I have Microsoft 365 Family subscription, deployed to multiple family users and on multiple computers. Basically $99/yr for five users. I have a couple user licenses left over. It solves 90% of all needs.

I am adding a consulting business for some of my projects, and have a domain reserved, etc… I need a full office productivity suite. My friendly web developer likes Google Suite, but my clients and I live in Microsoft environments (and some additional software is designed to pair with 365 Business). Accordingly, Microsoft 365 Business Standard might be a better product for my situation. I have no problem with the $12.50/user/month for a full suite business setup for my 2-3 users. My concern is whether and how I can have both 365 Family and 365 Business on the same machines. Specifically, if I try to add a Business Standard user account, I am concerned that the Business Standard setup and app installations will cause a conflict between the 365 business setup and the 365 Family personal accounts, if installed on the same machines. I don’t want to purchase 365 Business, attempt to install, and have a massive conflict that can’t be undone.

I would prefer not to have to convert all personal accounts to 365 Business. That’s just overkill (and expensive). I would also prefer not to have separate computers for personal and business. That’s just not practical.

Multiple calls to Microsoft Business Sales have concerned me because I get seriously different answers and people seem to not know.
My basic goal is to be able to log in and out of 365 personal and 365 business accounts on the same computers, while retaining separate OneDrives, etc… for all users. I should be able to do all business and personal with one laptop from a nice beach!

I hope the question makes sense, and your post indicates you might have encountered (and solved) this before. Any thoughts and advice are much appreciated!

Hi Will,
I am successfully using Microsoft 365 Business and the personal 365 on my computer. I use the included office apps that the personal 365 account gives me. I did NOT buy the Business $12.50/user/month because it could cause problems (but I don’t know for sure).

For your situation, what if you purchase a Business M365 $5/month plan for you, but for your other users, purchase the $12.50/month plan for them that includes the biz 365 + all the apps. When you buy licenses from MSFT, you choose the right plan for each person – not everyone has to have the same plan. That would solve your problem.

Then on your computer, you can switch between biz and personal M365 (look at my video again on how to set it up). I do it every day – sometimes I save docs to my SharePoint/OneDrive for Business and sometimes I save them to my OneDrive. There’s no logging in and out, everything is already set up.

When you call MSFT, I think they are instructed to say that you should use their business suite of apps rather than the personal, but if you already have personal installed…

If you have more than one Google Account, you can sign in to multiple accounts at once. That way, you can switch between accounts without signing out and back in again.

Your accounts have separate settings, but in some cases, settings from your default account might apply.

Add accounts

  1. On your computer, sign in to Google.
  2. On the top right, select your profile image or initial.
  3. On the menu, choose Add account.
  4. Follow the instructions to sign in to the account you want to use.

Switch between accounts

  1. On your computer, sign in to Google.
  2. On the top right, select your profile image or initial.
  3. On the menu, select the account you’d like to use.

Sign out

Important: Before you sign out, make sure you have backup verification methods set up in case you have trouble signing back in.

  1. On your device, go to a Google page, like www.google.com.
  2. On the top right, select your profile image or initial.
  3. On the menu, choose Sign out or Sign out of all accounts.

Remove your account from the sign-in page

  1. On your device, go to a browser where you’re signed in, like Chrome.
  2. Go to myaccount.google.com.
  3. In the top right, select your profile picture or initial.
  4. Select Sign out or Sign out of all accounts.
  5. Select Remove an account.
  6. Next to an account, select Remove .
  7. Optional: If you’ve signed in on other browsers, like Firefox or Safari, repeat these steps for each.

Accounts have separate settings

You can control your settings separately for each of your accounts. When you sign in to multiple accounts, account settings usually aren’t shared between accounts. For example, your accounts might have different language settings or sign-in steps.

Sometimes settings might carry over

If you’re signed in to multiple accounts at the same time, sometimes we can’t tell which account you’re using. For example, if you’re signed in to two accounts and you open a new browser window, we aren’t sure which account you want to use. In cases like these, Google might apply settings from your default account, like its Web & App Activity and Ads Personalization settings.

What a default account is

In many cases, your default account is the one you signed in with first. On mobile devices, your default account can vary depending on your device’s operating system and the apps you use.
