Hope you found this article helpful. Perhaps you might also find the article on how to remove the password from the PDF file useful.

PDF files are among one of the most widely-used forms of sharing documents with others across the internet; especially considering that the idea behind this file type is to have something that is universally readable on any platform.

If you do a lot of PDF handling on your Mac, then it might not be a bad idea to become familiar with how to split a PDF file, so we’ll show you how you can do that in this tutorial.

Why to split a PDF file

Because PDF files are a form of sharing information, they can sometimes have multiple pages. In some instances, PDF files may have cover sheets, table of contents, and other pages that you don’t really want to read. On the other hand, perhaps you just want to slice out a very specific page or two from a PDF file and save them as a separate PDF document for easy of access later on.

If you’re looking to trim some pages out of a PDF file, or split it, as we’ll refer to it throughout this tutorial, then you’ll be happy to know that your Mac’s built-in Preview app comes loaded with this functionality already so you don’t even have to install any additional third-party software.

How to do it

So now that your curious mind is wondering how you can do this, we’ll get into the meat and potatoes of this tutorial.

To split a PDF file, follow these steps:

1) Find a PDF file that you want to rip information from. You’ll want one with multiple pages in it. We’ll be using this PDF file from our Mac’s Desktop:

2) Right click on the file, and navigate to Open with… > Preview to open the PDF file in the Preview app.

3) This will open the PDF file in the Preview app, and you’ll see the multiple pages on the left side of the app in the sidebar.

4) Pick a page from the sidebar and then click on it to select it. We’ll be using page 2 in this document. Then, drag it to the Desktop and release it.

Note: You can hold the Command key on your keyboard as you click on pages to select more than one page to split from a document.

5) This will create a new PDF file with the same name, except that “(dragged)” will appear in its name, on the Desktop:

Note: Since this is only a single page from a PDF file that we dragged to the Desktop, you’ll notice that Preview doesn’t show any of the other pages that were present in the original PDF file anymore. This is literally just an excerpt split from the original PDF file.

And that’s all you have to do to split content away from a full PDF document.

Wrapping up

In some ways, this is a lot like clipping coupons; you wouldn’t bring the whole ad with you to the grocery store to show your coupon, you would only bring the coupon that you clipped from the ad. This concept is similar in that when you want a specific piece of information, you can drag it out of the PDF file and junk the rest of the file that you didn’t really need.

Download Adobe Acrobat (standard DC or PRO DC) & Follow these steps to split the files by size:

Open your PDF files in Acrobat DC.
● Click on the “Organize Pages” option >> then, click on the “Split” option.
● Now to split the PDF by size, select the “Maximum File Size” option.
● Click on the “Output Options” to give the location where you want to save & what to name the file, and how you would like to split your file.
● Click “OK” >> “Split” to unmerge the file.
● Give a name to your new file and click on the “Save” button.

This is how to unmerge PDF files using Adobe Acrobat DC.

    How to Split PDF Files

Windows doesn’t have an integrated tool like Preview for Mac OS X — it doesn’t even come with a PDF printer. Here’s how to split, merge, reorder, sign, and mark-up PDF files with the least obnoxious software possible.

If you have the paid version of Adobe Acrobat on your PC, it can do this — you might have this on a work computer. Be sure to avoid web-based software tools — don’t upload any PDFs with sensitive personal, financial, or business data to web-based PDF tools.

    Split PDF Files

You may sometimes want to split a PDF file, extracting some pages from it and creating a new PDF file with them. The PDFSam (PDF split and merge) tool we mention below can do this, but you may already be able to do this with software on your PC.

All you really need for this is a PDF viewer and software that can print to PDF. This could be Adobe’s official Adobe Acrobat Reader application and a third-party PDF printer like CutePDF Writer. However, CutePDF and similar applications have installers full of the terrible Ask Toolbar and other horrific junkware, so steer clear from these programs if possible — or just be extra careful when installing CutePDF Writer (or Download from Ninite).

If you have Google Chrome installed on your PC, it can actually do this. Google Chrome includes both an integrated PDF viewer and print-to-PDF features. Drag-and-drop a PDF file into the Chrome browser window to open it in Chrome. Click the menu button in Chrome and select Print. Click the “Change” button under Destination and choose Save as PDF.

Under Pages, specify the range of pages you want to extract. For example, you could enter 1-5 to extract pages 1-5, or enter 1-3, 6, 9 to extract pages 1-3, 6, and 9. If you want to split a PDF into several files, repeat this process — for example, print one PDF file with pages 1-5 and a second PDF file with pages 6-10.

    How to Split PDF Files

    Merge and Reorder PDFs

The best free tool we’ve found for merging pages from several PDF files into one on Windows is PDFSam — short for “PDF split and merge.” It’s free and open-source. Unfortunately, it relies on having Java installed on your PC — something we try to avoid. If you do need to merge PDFs with this tool, be sure to at least disable the Java browser plug-in or just uninstall Java entirely after you’re done. PDFSam itself doesn’t try to install junkware on your computer when you install it, but the Java runtime does.

Install the tool, select the Merge/Extract plug-in, and add multiple PDF files. Use the options at the bottom of the window to combine them into a single PDF file.

This tool also allows you to reorder the pages in a PDF file into a different order, which could help if you scanned the pages of a document in the wrong order. PDFSam also has a built-in plug-in for splitting PDFs.

    How to Split PDF Files

Sign and Mark Up PDF Documents

Adobe’s PDF reader app — formerly Adobe Reader and now Adobe Acrobat Reader DC — has some integrated markup features. These allow you to sign PDFs right on your computer and add comments that can include text and drawings.

To use these features, open a PDF file in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and click the “Comment” or “Fill & Sign” options in the righthand sidebar. The “Comment” tool allow you to annotate a PDF, adding text and drawings anywhere you like. The “Fill & Sign” tool allows you to add a signature anywhere in the document. These particular features are free, although many of Adobe Acrobat Reader DC’s advanced features require a paid subscription.

    How to Split PDF Files

You don’t need paid software for this, although Adobe Acrobat will do all of these things if you have a license. Adobe Acrobat may be provided by your workplace, but home users won’t want to spend over $400 on it. Just use the free tools above for basic PDF-editing — and be sure to avoid web-based PDF-editor tools. Don’t upload any potentially sensitive document to a tool you don’t trust.

Do you want to split and merge PDF files ? You don`t have to buy a software, there is a free, open-source alternative named PDFSam that works on Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

Short PDFSam Review: This is a life-saver application especially when it comes down to PDF documents. Powered by an easy-to-use and intuitive interface it allows you to: split pdf documents ( in single pages or chapters ), merge pdf documents or their subsections, extract desired sections, mix pages from two pdf documents, rotate and reorder pages etc. Those are only a couple of PDFSam Basic features and most of the people will only need the basic version. If you need to encrypt PDF files, add pdf frontpage, addendum or to extract attachments and other options you will need PDFSam Enhanced which is available in exchange for a donation – any amount.

Quick Introduction: I would like to show you how easy is to use PDFSam. This is not a complete reference or tutorial – more like a quick look over his capabilities. Before I start, you may want to download PDFSam from his homepage. Keep in mind that you need Java installed in order to use this software. If you already have Java installed, download, install the program and open it. It should look like this ( I resized the window ):

    How to Split PDF Files
As I said, you can manipulate PDF files in many ways but in this article I will show you how to use only two features: Merge-Extract and Split. Let`s start with the first one: Merge-Extract feature. Click on this feature, just like I`ve did in the following image:

    How to Split PDF Files

Obviously, I need to add several PDF files, so here`s how to do it: click on “Add“ button, navigate to the location where you keep your files and select 2 or more of them. In this example I will select only 2. After selection, push the “Open“ button.

    How to Split PDF Files

As you can see, information about the current documents such as file names, path, number of pages can be retrieved by simply looking at PDFSam interface. This information is very useful when you want to create a new PDF file. In this example, my first document has only 2 pages and the second 32 pages. Let`s say that I would like to create a new PDF file that will contain only the first page from the first document and the last page from the other one. In order to obtain this result, I will go to “Page Selection“ and I will enter 1 in the first document and 32 in the other one.

Let`s move on, make sure that you`ve selected “PDF Documents contains forms“ ( just in case they do ), then select the destination where the new ( merged ) file will be created and when you`re ready click on “Run“ – the new document should be ready in a couple of seconds depending on the size. I`ve highlighted the steps in this picture:

Although, I`ve specified a name for the output file “MY-MERGED-PDF-DOCUMENT.pdf“ the program created “PDFsamTMPbufferIZGIJ1.pdf“. However, it doesn`t matter as PDFSam did what I wanted: to create a new pdf that would contain only the first and the last page from two different PDF files. I`ve opened the new created file with my favourite PDF Editor – Sumatra PDF and as you can see this is the brand new document that contains only two pages from two different documents.

    How to Split PDF Files
The Merge-Extract feature is easy to use once you get used too. However, if you need to use the Split feature, it`s even easier. Let`s say that we need to split a document that has 32 pages in 32 different pdf documents – each page in one separated file. That`s easy, from the main interface, select “Split“, “Add“ a document, select “Split Options“ that you need, choose destination folder and push the “Run“ button. I`ve made a picture will all the steps:

    How to Split PDF Files

Depending on how many pages you want to split and the size of the PDF documents, it may take more than just a couple of seconds but it will work. Here`s how it looks now, I have 32 new files created – PDFSam extracted the content from each page and put it on a new file.

    How to Split PDF Files
As you can see, this is an indispensable tool if you work with PDF documents regularly. I just tried to explain what PDFSam is and why we can expect to see a lot more of it in the future. Don`t forget, this fine piece of software has been created and maintained by Andrea Vacondio, so don`t forget to donate for his work.

When we create PDF files, they can consist of either one single page or of multiple pages. It can always happen that we will need to add more pages to a PDF document or to remove pages from it at a later point. Luckily there is the possibility to split PDFs into several files and to merge PDFs into a single one. With all the advantages of PDF files it is nice to know that you always keep control of your PDF files and that you have the freedom to change them.

    Split PDF files

There are many situations where a tool that lets you edit PDFs can be useful. For example, if you have a PDF that consists of several pages and you only want to share parts of it, you can split it with a PDF editor tool like PDF Architect and delete those pages you don’t want to forward. In case some or all of the pages need to be be in a different order, the tool also lets you rearrange pages within PDF documents. In order to merge PDF files, you can either use PDF Architect as well, or try one of the options described below.

Merge different file formats into one PDF file

The great thing about merging PDFs is that you can merge files that have been created by different people and that stem from different programmes. So instead of having a whole bunch of different files in different formats that actually belong together, you can merge them all into one single PDF file. For example, if you have created a Word file and your colleague created an Excel file and these two need to be put together, you can merge them into one PDF. This can either be done with a PDF converter app like PDFCreator or if it needs to go really quick, you can merge PDFs online with PDFCreator Online. If you merge PDFs in the desktop version of PDFCreator you can easily do this straight after the conversion and create the final file with just a few clicks.

Whether you’re a college student or a corporate worker, PDFs are everywhere. Most books or essays available are PDFs, so it is important that you know how to play around with them. One of the things I have had to do from time to time as a student is split a PDF. Sometimes, you get the whole book and need to extract a chapter, or just remove an extra blank page that decided to show up when you were trying to submit an essay. Fortunately, the solution to PDF splitting woes is right in front of you. You just have to see it, and in this article, we will show you the easiest way to split PDFs using Google Chrome’s inbuilt print dialog. This tutorial will work for any computer with Google Chrome installed, including Windows, Macs, and of course, Chromebooks.

Usually, if you wanted to split PDFs, you would have to use an online tool like ilovepdf.com or splitpdf.com. These tools are perfectly fine if you have a really good internet connection, and your PDF is really small. However, these free sites will not split large size PDFs without a premium account, which costs money. Thankfully, you don’t need any of these online sites at all, because Chrome has a powerful tool that can split any PDF, no matter what size, and without requiring an internet connection or the painful upload/download process usually involved in using online PDF splitters.

Open your PDF using Google Chrome

If you are on Windows or OSX, you probably have Adobe Reader installed for viewing PDFs. Our trick requires that you open the PDF that you want to split on Chrome’s PDF viewer. To do this, you will have to right click on the PDF file, and select Open with > Google Chrome.

    How to Split PDF Files

Your PDF should open in the Chrome PDF viewer, which will look like the picture above.

    Split using the Print Dialog

On the top-right corner of the viewer, you will spot a printer icon, which is the command to print the PDF. To proceed to the next step, you can click it, or alternatively press Ctrl + P on Windows (or command + P on a Mac).

Chrome’s inbuilt print dialog box should pop-open, with a live preview of the document you’re printing. The first thing you need to do is make sure that the Destination of the dialog box is ‘Save as PDF’, as shown in the screenshot below.

    How to Split PDF Files

If your printer is connected to the computer or registered with Google Cloud Print, then the Destination will not be ‘Save as PDF’ by default. In order to manually set the destination to Save as PDF, click on ‘Change’ in the Destination section.

    How to Split PDF Files

From the list of Destinations available, choose ‘Save as PDF’.

Once your destination is set, the next option is ‘Pages’. This is where the splitting comes in. By default, Pages is set to ‘All’, but you probably want to save a specific set of pages from the PDF. In order to do that, select the page numbers text field and enter the set of page numbers you want extracted. For example, if I want to extract pages 15-45, I will type ‘15-45’ on the text box and the print dialog will show a preview of those pages.

    How to Split PDF Files

If you just want to extract one page, then type that page number and it will be extracted. All you need to do then is click ‘Save’.

The print dialog will ask you to choose a location, and then save your extracted PDF on that location.

That’s it. You now have a PDF splitter built right into Chrome. This is a really handy trick to keep in mind, and can prove to be very useful in certain situations.

    Converting.

There are a number of ways to combine or merge multiple PDF files into one single file or to split such a file.

    How to merge PDF files

    • Adobe Acrobat Pro DC has a ‘Combine Files’ function in its list of Tools. It is easy to use and powerful, allowing you to change the order of pages or use only part of the pages of a file.
    • Acrobat Pro versions 8 and later had a dedicated ‘Combine files’ menu option in the ‘File’ menu. If you are using an even older version of Acrobat there are two other ways to merge files:
      • Using the ‘Insert pages’ menu option is only practical if you want to merge just a couple of files
      • If you need to merge a large number of files which use consecutive file names simply open the first file, make sure the ‘Pages’ navigation pane is visible, and use drag&drop to copy all other files to this area. Never forget to perform a ‘SAVE AS’ in Acrobat after combining files. This makes sure that the new file gets cleaned properly.
    • If you have a prepress workflow system, it can be used to merge files. In Agfa Apogee, for example, you can simply create a job that contains the total number of pages, add all PDF files and then use the Export Task Processor to save the combined file to disk.
    • If a full-blown workflow is slightly above budget but you need to merge loads of PDF files on a regular base, google around as there are a number of tools on the market to split and merge files.

    How to split PDF files

    • Acrobat 9 Pro has a ‘Split file’ option which works fine but doesn’t offer much control over the naming convention of the split files.
    • I often use my prepress workflow to split files.
    • There are loads of tools on the market to split PDF files. In a prepress environment, tools like callas pdfToolbox that go beyond simple splitting and merging are worth taking a look at.

    Other sources of information

There is an interesting discussion on the B4print forums on merging preseparated PDF files. I also started a generic thread on merging and splitting files.

What Does it Mean to Split a PDF?

Over the last couple of decades, PDF has become the file format of choice for archiving files. It does a wonderful job of preserving the original document, right down to fonts and layout, and it makes it possible for anyone to open the document, irrespective of whether they use the same software that produced the original file.

The concept of splitting a PDF into multiple files came in fairly early. The idea was simple: you should be able to break apart a PDF document into multiple files, just like you can split a stack of documents into smaller stacks. Especially when dealing with a large PDF, you should be able to separate it into multiple PDF files. The advantages are obvious: a smaller file size, and easier page navigation without having to rely on dozens of bookmarks.

What is the Difference between Splitting a PDF and Unstacking a PDF?

There is some confusion about splitting a PDF versus unstacking a PDF. Normally to split PDF files refers to breaking a single file into two files. When you split the PDF, you need to designate the page position where you want the split to occur. Everything after that page gets broken off into its own, distinct file.

Unstacking, on the other hand, means breaking up a single PDF into many files, usually at regular intervals. For example, suppose that you have a single, 100-page PDF file that contains 50 documents that are each two pages long. You could unstack the file at two-page intervals into 50 separate files.

How Can I Separate PDF Pages?

For anyone wondering how to separate pages in PDF files, the process requires PDF editor software. There are specialized PDF splitter programs that only split PDF pages, but you’re far better off getting a full PDF editor. A PDF editor will split PDF pages and go on to provide the full range of PDF editing features.

How Can I Save One Page of a PDF?

To save one page of a PDF you need a slightly different function than PDF splitting. When you split a PDF, it severs the file into two files. Saving one page of a PDF, on the other hand, requires a feature called extract PDF pages. The extract feature pulls an individual page, specific pages, or a page range out of the middle of the PDF file and saves them as their own file. You can extract any number of pages. Simply select pages or enter the page numbers to extract. Extracting PDF pages can either remove the pages from the original file or, with the right PDF editor, simply save a copy of the pages.

Is It Possible to Split a PDF without Opening It?

The best PDF editors aim to make each PDF function as efficient as possible. In the case of PDF splitting, an ideal editor will allow you to split PDF files, unstack PDF files, and even extract pages from PDF files without opening them.

For instance, FileCenter DMS document management software provides a powerful PDF organization feature in addition to a PDF editor. You can organize your archived PDFs into easy-to-access electronic filing cabinets. Within a cabinet, you have the ability to manipulate PDF files directly, without opening them. You can split a PDF where it resides, or unstack it, or pull pages out of it into their own file.

    How Can I Merge PDFs?

So we’ve discussed splitting. What if you want to go the other direction: merge PDFs? Again, if you have the right software it’s a piece of cake. If you don’t it’s incredibly complicated.

In FileCenter DMS, you can merge PDF files with drag and drop: drop one file onto another one and the files will merge. Even bookmarks are preserved.

So, they want to break protected PDF files into multiple parts and manage them accordingly. But the procedure to split a password protected PDF file is not as easy as it seems to be. When Should I Split Adobe PDF Document into Multiple Parts?

The handling of large PDF sized files can make managing them difficult. Apart from this, there can be many other possible reasons also. Let us take the following as an example:

A user is having a PDF document that contains 1000 pages in it, which may sometimes create conflicts. That’s because handling oversized PDF files is not at all easy. Opening and accessing a PDF file with 1000 pages consumes a lot of time or in few cases, the system starts hanging while opening such a large PDF file. Apart from this, whenever a user needs to send or download an oversized PDF file, it can create problems.

In this 1000 pages PDF document example, users sometimes just want to send only particular information from specific pages. In the Start Page field, specify the first page to start the split, in the End Page field, specify the last page to split (inclusive) and enter a number of pages per partition into the Split At Page field. In our example, we extract just one page of the document, to do that we set the fields as shown in the screenshot below:

As an output of this action, we receive an array of Result files. In our case, we have just one file in the array.

You can find more detailed information about Split PDF action here.

    Send an email¶

Once the result file is generated, we send an email using Send email action from Office 365 Outlook connector. We fill in the email fields; in the Attachments section, we add a name for the new PDF file and choose ResultFileContents – Item as an output from previous steps. This will automatically transform this action into repeating one which will be performed for each Result file. In our case, there is just one file.

    How to Split PDF Files

When you get a PDF document in which two or more pages have been scanned into a single page—like when someone scans in printed tomes such as annual reports or a spread of two facing pages from a book—and you want to split those scans into separate pages, what do you do? We have an easy solution.

Just use the split PDF feature of Foxit PhantomPDF by following these simple steps:

    • Go to Organize >Duplicate, then set the page you want to copy. For example, if it’s page 1 of the original, name the duplicated pages Page 1A and Page 1B.
    • Go to Page 1A, choose Organize >Crop Page, then drag a box around the left side text, double-click the crop box, then click OK.
    • Go to Page 1B, go to Organize > Crop Pages then drag a box around the right side text, double-click the crop box, then click OK.

After you’ve cropped the left half as Page 1A, and the right half as Page 1B, go to File > Preferences > Print > Print text as a graphic.

Next, open the cropped PDF document in PhantomPDF.

Now, go to File > Print and send it to a PhantomPDF printer to see if the newly created PDF document meets your needs.

This Phantom PDF editing tool works like copying and pasting, but on the page level. You can delete blank or unwanted pages, rotate pages, extract pages and replace pages. All of which allows you to pull out whole sections of a document to use elsewhere, without compromising the original.

To organize and store your files, open the Organize toolbar either by choosing Tools > Organize or clicking in the Common Tools toolbar, and choose Organize. Click Split in the Organize toolbar. A Split Document dialog box will pop up with a drop-down list. Select from the following criteria for splitting your document:

    1. By Number of pages, specifying the maximum number of pages for each document in the split
    2. By File size, specifying the maximum file size for each document in the split
    3. Using Top-Level Bookmarks, creating one document per bookmark
    4. For Blank pages, splitting the document each time a blank page is found (and discarding the blanks).

Now you can click Output Options to select storage locations, file names and more. Your document can be integrated with your organization’s chosen cloud storage system. Meanwhile, your content will be protected no matter where your documents go.

PhantomPDF editing software is available for a one time licensing fee that allows you to use it forever, or on a monthly or annual subscription basis. Check it out!
