How to stop iphone widget stacks from automatically changing

You must be already excited about the redesigned, stunning widgets on iPhone you can add to the home screen. Among the iPhone widgets, the Smart Stack stands out by letting you do more with it. It can stack up multiple widgets and recommend you smartly.

Here, we will discuss how to use Smart Stack and how to customize it.

What is Smart Stack Widget on iPhone

Smart Stack on iPhone is the new feature Apple announced with the iOS 14 update. The smart stack is simply a stack of multiple widgets on the iPhone that you can add to your iPhone home screen.

Not only does it stack up multiple widgets into a small space, but the Smart Stack can also recommend the widget you want at the time of the day. It works on your usage behavior, just like Siri Suggestions.

You can add or remove the widgets from Smart Stack, and they will rotate depends on your usage pattern. For example, if you regularly listen to podcasts in the evening, the smart stack will show you the podcast widget at that time. Apple calls this feature Smart Rotate.

How to Add a New Smart Stack Widget to iPhone Home Screen

Adding a smart stack to your iPhone home screen is just as similar to adding default home screen widgets. You can simply select the smart stack of the size you want and add to any home screen page.

  1. Long press on your iPhone home screen.
  2. Tap the “+” button at the top left corner.
  3. From the Widgets Library, tap Smart Stack.
  4. Choose your size and tap “Add Widget.”

The smart stack widget will appear on your home screen in wiggle mode. You can drag it to any position and swipe up from the bottom of the screen to save the edits.

Enable or Disable Smart Rotate in Smart Stack

The Smart Rotate feature on the Smart Stack widget helps you access the right widget at the right time. Your iPhone learns from your usage pattern and suggests you the best widget automatically.

  1. Long-press the smart stack widget on your iPhone home screen.
  2. Tap the “Edit Stack” option.
  3. Toggle on or off Smart Rotate from the screen.
  4. Swipe down the window to save.

If you disable the smart rotate, the smart stack will not suggest you the widgets. You can manually scroll between the widgets.

How to Add Widgets to a Smart Stack

When you add a new smart stack widget to your iPhone home screen, you can find that it picks random widgets from the list. It does not ask you which of the widgets you want in the first place.

Follow the steps below to find out how to add widgets to an existing Smart Stack, so that you can have the widgets you want in it.

  1. Long-press and drag the widget from the home screen you want to add.
  2. Drag and drop the widget to the smart stack widget on the screen.

You can add up to 10 widgets to a smart stack as of now. It allows you to add individual widgets, and you cannot merge two smart stacks into one.

Certain widgets like Siri App Suggestions cannot be added to a Smart Stack.

How to Remove Widgets from Smart Stack

As you know, a new Smart Stack has randomly picked widgets. That is not what you may want. We have seen that we can easily add new widgets to a smart stack. Likewise, you can also remove such widgets from a smart stack quickly.

  1. Long-press the smart stack widget on the iPhone.
  2. Tap Edit Stack option.
  3. From the next window, swipe left the widget you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete.

This is the quickest way you can remove widgets from a smart stack. You can get rid of the existing ones. Meanwhile, you can add other widgets as well.

How to Create a Custom Smart Stack on iPhone

The Widgets Library on your iPhone has a smart stack widget. When you add to your home screen, you get a preset list of widgets stacked. If you don’t want that, you can create a custom smart stack on the iPhone from scratch. Here is how.

  1. Add a widget to the home screen. Make sure it is the same size as the smart stack you want to create.
  2. Drag another widget from the home screen or the widgets library.
  3. Drop the dragged widget, when you see an outline on the first widget.
  4. Keep similarly adding other widgets.

When you create a new custom smart stack, it works just like the default smart stack widget. You can get Smart Rotate and can add up to 10 widgets of your choice. You are always free to remove or add any widget to the smart stack as you wish.

Smart Stack on iPhone: FAQs

Yes. You can drag one widget on to another to create a smart stack. You can create as much personalized smart stack as you want.

You can add up to 10 widgets to a single smart stack.

Smart Rotate feature switches the display widget on the smart stack based on your usage pattern. If you want to stop it, disable Smart Stack from the Edit Stack window.

As you now know, you can create a Smart Stack out of two or more widgets on your iPhone. When you stack multiple widgets, you get the smart rotate as well, which can intelligently find your interest and recommend the widget you want at the time.

Widget stacks are a great way to cycle through multiple widgets on your iPhone’s home screen. Annoyingly, iOS automatically changes widgets based on the time of day and your usage. Here’s how to stop iPhone widget stacks from automatically changing.

Starting in iOS 14, Apple introduced widgets on the iPhone home screen. There’s a built-in Smart Stack widget that automatically cycles through widgets in the stack. It’s supposed to show you the correct widget at the right time. For example, it will show you the Calendar widget when you have an upcoming appointment and your personal photos at night.

While the Smart Stack widget is quite useful, the problem is that every widget stack you create manually also becomes a smart stack because it has the Smart Rotate feature enabled. If you are customizing your home screen with multiple widget stacks, you might want consistency. It might be jarring to come back to your iPhone with all your widgets showing something different.

Turning off the Smart Rotate feature stops widget stacks from automatically changing. First, let’s take a look at the process of creating a widget stack.

Go to a home screen on your iPhone and tap and hold on an empty part of the display. Now, tap the “+” button in the top-left corner. You’ll see a widget selection screen. Tap on an app to see every widget available for the app.

Now, select a widget (small, medium, or large size) and tap the “Add Widget” button to add the widget to your home screen.

Apple has announced iOS 14, and it’s the first time in years that the company has made significant changes to the home screen. There are several new features, but perhaps the most significant change is the new Widgets system. We’ve had Widgets on the Today View (the screen to the left of your first Home screen) for years, but not a lot of people use that screen. And what’s the point of glanceable info if you have to swipe around to see it?

With iOS 14, Apple is replacing the old widgets with all new ones that are more dynamic, can pull in more information, come in three sizes, and most importantly, can be placed anywhere on the home screen. Here’s how you work with widgets in iOS 14.

How to add Widgets

To get started with widgets, you’ll want to enter “jiggle mode.” Just press and hold anywhere on the screen for a few seconds. It’s easiest to press an empty space—if you press on an app icon, you’ll get that app’s context menu. If you do, you can keep holding and you’ll go to jiggle mode, or tap “Edit Home Screen.”

To add Widgets to your home screen, enter “jiggle mode” and tap the icon in the upper left.

Once in this mode, tap the ( + ) symbol in the upper left corner of the screen. this will pop up the Widgets menu.

Widgets come in three sizes and sometimes multiple variants. Swipe through them before adding.

From here you can scroll through installed widgets, or use the search bar to find one. As you install more apps and they start to support the new Widgets format, you may have a lot to choose from.

Tap the widget you want to add, and you’ll see an explanation and preview. Swipe left and right to see all your options—some Widgets have multiple styles. The Notes widget, for example, can show a single note or a folder.

Widgets can come in three sizes. Small widgets are the same size as a 2 by 2 block of app icons. Medium widgets are two icons high, but four icons wide (taking up the entire width of your home screen). Large widgets are four icons wide and four icons tall.

Once you have picked a widget and its size, tap Add Widget at the bottom of the screen. The Widget you have picked will be placed on your home screen, but you’re still in “jiggle mode” and can move it around. To place it on a different home screen, drag it left or right.

You can even place multiple copies of the same Widget!

You can rearrange Widgets at any time by entering “jiggle mode” and then just dragging them around.

How to remove Widgets

Removing Widgets as as easy as removing apps! Just enter “jiggle mode” and tap the little (-) button in the upper left corner of the widget.

You can also long-press on a Widget and select “Remove Widget” from the context menu.

How to use the Smart Stack

Apple has a special Widget called the Smart Stack. It is a stack of widgets in small or medium size that automatically rotates to show what your iPhone thinks is the most useful Widget for you at the time. It takes into account your usual app use, the time of day, and your location, and does all of this locally on your iPhone so no data is sent to Apple or anyone else.

Just open the Widgets panel as described above and choose Smart Stack.

After placing it on your screen, you can flip through the Widgets in the stack by swiping up and down on it.

The Smart Stack cycles through Widgets intelligently througout the day. You can customize it, too.

You can change the order of the Widgets in the stack, or remove them entirely. Tap and hold on the Smart Stack Widget until the context menu pops up. You can remove the Widget you’re on, or choose Edit Stack.

From the stack edit screen, you can turn off that Smart Rotate feature with the toggle up top. You can tap and drag the little grab bars on the right to change the stack order, or swipe to the left to delete an item from the stack.

How to create your own Widgets stack

You can make your own Smart Stack by simple dragging Widgets on top of each other.

Just place Widgets how you normally would. Drag any two Widgets of the same size on top of each other, and you’ve got a new stack! It works just like making a folder with app icons.

You can edit your stack the same way you do the Smart Stack. Turn Smart Rotate on or off, reorder the Widgets, or remove the ones you no longer want.

Hi! Thanks for reading. This post looks better in our award-winning app, Tips & Tricks for iPhone.

No time to drop into the Apple Store and ask the Genius Bar for help with your iPhone or iPad? Maybe one of our resident experts can help!

As Apple nerds, we get asked a lot of tech support questions — and some of those questions crop up time and time again. Here’s a recent query that we think will be familiar to many of you.

“How do I choose which apps appear in the Smart Stack widget?”

When Apple introduced Home Screen widgets, one of its crowning glories was the Smart Stack, a set of up to seven distinct widgets that would automatically rotate in and out as you need them. Indeed, it’s a great way to cram a lot of information into a small space on your Home Screen – but customizing the stacks isn’t especially intuitive. Here’s how it works.

The primary way to add a smart stack is to long-press any app icon and hit Edit Home Screen to enter “jiggle mode.” From here, you can tap the + button in the top left to add a widget; simply choose Smart Stack from the list and choose a widget size. iOS will automatically pick out a set of widgets to fill the stack based on your usage patterns and what’s already on your Home Screen.

Once in place, long-press the Smart Stack and tap Edit Stack and you’ll be able to make a few changes.

How to stop iphone widget stacks from automatically changing

You can disable Smart Rotate to stop them changing through the day, meaning you’ll need to swipe up or down to cycle through the stack. You can also reorder the included widgets by dragging them up or down the list, or get rid any you don’t like with a swipe to the left and a tap of the Delete button. Note that removing all but one widget will convert the Smart Stack into a regular widget for the remaining app.

Strangely, there’s no way to add anything new from this edit view. That leaves many users believing there is no way to add a new app to a Smart Stack.

But in fact, there is another way. All you need to do is manually add the widget you want to the Home Screen – making sure it’s the same size as the others – and then long-press and drag it on top of the Smart Stack. Let go and it will be added to the stack, provided there’s room for it. If not, delete something first using the method above.

Using this technique, you can even create a fresh Smart Stack by simply dragging two widgets of the same size on top of one another. Then you can stick at two or continue to drag more on top to add them to the stack. Though it isn’t particularly obvious, once learned this opens up a lot more room for flexibility with your Home Screen layouts!

The new iOS 14 widgets are bigger, brighter, and more useful than before, but they take up a lot of room — unless you use widget stacks, and Smart Stacks.

It’s the most visible difference between iOS 14 and all of its predecessors. Now you can drag a widget from the Today view out onto your regular iPhone home screen.

Or in other words, you can turn widgets from something you’re vaguely aware you should look into, to something that you use every day. Yet with this extra usability, with this extra visibility, the temptation is to use many, many widgets.

Do it. A widget is a way to see information at a glance, such as the news, your reminders, your schedule, or just about anything else your iPhone can show you.

But do it with stacks, and especially with what Apple calls a Smart Stack. This is a way of putting many widgets in the same space, and rotating through them yourself — or getting your iPhone to choose which to show you and when.

Add a widget to your home screen

  1. Press and hold on any app to make it show a menu
  2. Either choose Edit Home Screen from the menu
  3. Or just keep pressing and holding until all the apps jiggle
  4. Tap the + button at top left
  5. From the screen that appears, search or scroll for a widget
  6. Tap on one you want
  7. Swipe left and right to pick a size of widget
  8. Tap on Add Widget or drag it up from the list
  9. Tap Done

You can add and edit widgets on the Today screen, but they’re much more use on a home screen. If you tap Add Widget in that last step, iOS 14 pops it into your current home screen for you.

How to stop iphone widget stacks from automatically changing

If, instead, you drag it from the screens showing you different size widgets, you can position it there, or on any screen you have. Wherever you put it, there it stays, and all other apps get out of the way.

How to make a stack

  1. Drag a new widget from the list
  2. Hover it over an existing one on your screen
  3. Look for a faint new border around the existing widget
  4. If you see the border, you can drop your new widget there
  5. Tap Done

Alternatively, if you’ve already got multiple widgets on the screen, you can group them into one slot. Press and hold on one until you see Edit Home Screen, or everything jiggles, then try dragging one widget on top of another.

If this works, you’ve just created a stack of widgets. From now on, you’ll only see one at a time, it will only take up that one spot on your home screen, but you can swipe on it to see the others.

It may not work, though. There is a practical reason why it definitely won’t, but during the beta phase of iOS 14, we found inconsistencies that may remain.

The practical problem is that you cannot drag a widget on top of one that is a different size. It would be great if iOS 14 automatically changed the widgets to match each other, but it doesn’t.

And the inconsistent version is that we’ve sometimes found that while you can’t drag a certain widget on top of another one, you can do the reverse. If one widget won’t go on top of another, try putting the second widget atop the first.

How to stop iphone widget stacks from automatically changing

How to edit a stack

  1. Tap and hold on a stack of widgets
  2. Choose Edit Stack from the menu that appears
  3. Drag to rearrange widgets in the stack
  4. Or swipe to reveal a Delete button if you want to remove it

You can’t drag a widget off another one, you can’t drag it out of the stack. If you change your mind and want to remove one, you have to edit the stack like this.

How to make a Smart Stack

  1. Press and hold on any app to make it show a menu
  2. Either choose Edit Home Screen from the menu
  3. Or just keep pressing and holding until all the apps jiggle
  4. Tap the + button at top left
  5. Scroll down to Smart Stack
  6. Swipe left and right to pick a size of widget
  7. Tap on Add Widget or drag it up from the list

Apple talks about Smart Stacks as if they were different to the rest. They are, but really only in operation, not necessarily in how you set them up.

What’s different is that a Smart Stack rotates between the widgets you’ve put in the stack — automatically. Using Machine Learning, it will notice that, for instance, you always check the weather first thing in the morning and listen to podcasts at lunchtime.

So when you pick up your iPhone in the morning, the stack will show the weather widget. And then as you get out your sandwiches, it will be showing you the podcast widget.

The smartness of Smart Stacks is mostly in that rotation of widgets. But when you add a Smart Stack to your iPhone, it does come with a selection of widgets that iOS 14 thinks you’ll most likely use.

How to stop iphone widget stacks from automatically changing

However, you don’t have to take what iOS 14 gives you. As well as editing the stack to remove ones you don’t want, or add others, you can create a regular stack and then make it smart.

How to make any stack smart

  1. Tap and hold on a stack of widgets
  2. Choose Edit Stack from the menu that appears
  3. Tap Smart Rotate on or off

The only difference here is that you have to decide what widgets go in the stack — and you do it the same way you did above with creating a stack. Otherwise, iOS 14 still decides which to show you when.

It is unquestionably tremendous, and it only gets better as you use it more and Machine Learning gets better at figuring out what widget is best to show you.

What will help that is the fact that since these widgets are now on your homescreens, since they’re basically in your face instead of tucked away on the Today view, you’re going to use them more. And the more you use them, the more iOS 14 will notice when you choose what.

Now we just have to wait for more developers to bring out widgets we can add to our stacks.

How to stop iphone widget stacks from automatically changing

With the introduction of iOS 8, Apple added support for Widgets on the iPhone. But the implementation was half-baked and nowhere as good as on Android. For instance, there was no way to add widgets on the home screen, customize, or resize them. With iOS 14, Apple has finally made some much-needed improvements to widgets on the iPhone by allowing users to add, remove, customize them as per their liking. Here’s how.

Apple didn’t stop here. The company has implemented Smart Stack widgets that combine multiple widgets on the home screen and iOS Today View menu. However, you can’t interact with iPhone home screen widgets.

How to Add Widgets on iPhone’s Home Screen

Smart Stack saves space on the home screen and serves the purpose.
