WhatsApp groups are great for staying in touch with friends and family, but they can also be a nuisance and a source of spam. You can now prevent people from adding you to WhatsApp groups without your consent on iPhone and Android.
Control WhatsApp Group Invites on Android
Using a new privacy setting on Android, you can now stop everyone, or just people not in your contact book, from adding you to WhatsApp groups. In fact, a special option in Android enables you to add exceptions to this block list.
On your Android phone, make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of WhatsApp.
Next, tap on the Menu button in the top toolbar.
Here, tap on the “Settings” button.
Now, select the “Account” option.
From the Account section, tap on the “Privacy” button.
You’ll find different privacy-related options for chats. Here, tap on “Groups.”
In the “Who Can Add Me to Groups” section, you’ll see three options: Everyone, My Contacts, and My Contacts Except.
If you want to avoid spam, switch to the “My Contacts” option, so only users in your contact book can add you to a group.
If you want granular control over the process, choose the “My Contacts Except” option. You’ll then be able to select specific users from your contact list who can’t directly add you to a group.
This is a great option if you know the people who frequently add you to WhatsApp groups you don’t want to be a part of.
Now, when someone not in your contact book tries to add you to a group, they’ll get a message that they can’t directly add you to a group. Instead, they can choose to send an invite to the group as a personal message.
Control WhatsApp Group Invites on iPhone
The process is slightly different on the iPhone. Instead of the “My Contacts Except” option, you have a “Nobody” option. This is a blanket ban that stops anyone and everyone from adding you to a group directly.
Open the WhatsApp app on your iPhone and tap on the “Settings” tab from the toolbar. Here, choose the “Account” option.
Next, tap on the “Privacy” button.
Select the “Groups” option.
You can now choose between “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” and “Nobody.”
“Everyone” is the default. To let only your contacts add you to a group, choose the “My Contacts” option. If you want a blanket ban for everyone, choose “Nobody.”
Now, when someone tries to add you to a group, they’ll see an “Invite Friend” button instead. When they tap on it, you’ll receive an invite to join the group as a personal message.
This is just one of the ways to protect your privacy on WhatsApp. You can also beef up your WhatsApp security by adding Face ID and Touch ID protection for the app on your iPhone.

If you use WhatsApp in your mobile phone, you might have faced this problem many times. Group admins can add you to their WhatsApp groups without your permission. Actually anyone can add you to his/her WhatsApp group without even asking for your permission.
Many times our friends, relatives, colleagues and even unknown person create new groups on WhatsApp and they add us to their groups. They don’t need to ask us for our permission before adding us to their groups. WhatsApp allows its users to create groups and add other people without any permission.
Although we have an option to Exit from a WhatsApp group but the group admins can re-add us to their groups and it becomes very annoying. Many times we don’t want to join a WhatsApp group but group admins force us by adding us again and again. Since we don’t receive any permission or confirmation prompt, we can’t refuse the group requests.
We have received many queries in past from our readers regarding this WhatsApp problem. We receive questions such as is there any way to stop people from adding me to their WhatsApp group without my permission? How to block someone from adding me to WhatsApp group? How can I completely block/restrict all groups in WhatsApp so that no one can add me to groups? etc.
WhatsApp was also receiving these complaints since long time and users were requesting WhatsApp team to add a feature so that group admins need to ask users permissions before adding them to their groups.
Finally WhatsApp team has added this much awaited feature to newer versions of WhatsApp. WhatsApp 2.19.98 and later versions come with this new feature which allows you to control WhatsApp groups. If you want this feature, make sure you have upgraded to the latest version of WhatsApp.
Now you can select who can add you to groups in WhatsApp using following steps:
1. Open WhatsApp on your mobile phone, tap on 3 vertical dots menu present at the top-right corner and select Settings option.
2. Now tap on “Account -> Privacy” option.
3. Scroll down to bottom and you’ll see “Groups” option. This is the new option which allows users to decide who can add them to groups in WhatsApp.
To change the setting, tap on “Groups” option and it’ll open Groups settings in new page.
4. Now you’ll have following 3 options to select present under “Who can add me to groups” section:
- My contacts
By default the option is set to Everyone which means everyone can add you to groups without your permission.
You can change the option to “My contacts” so that only people present in your contacts list can add you to their groups.
If you want to permanently and completely block all groups in WhatsApp so that no one can add you to any group in WhatsApp, set the option to Nobody. Now if a group admin tries to add you to a group in WhatsApp, he’ll receive “Couldn’t add” error message and no one will be able to add you to any WhatsApp group without your permission.
Now group admins will need to invite you to join their groups by inviting you privately.

Don’t want people adding you to WhatsApp Groups? You can put an end to this madness on iPhone with a few changes in settings.
End the Annoyance Once and for All by Blocking People from Adding You to WhatsApp Groups on iPhone
We don’t even need any sort of poll to know how popular WhatsApp is among users. It is the one cross-platform app pretty much everyone makes use of to get their messages, photos and videos across to their loved ones.
However, with so many people using it there are bound to be times where you end up realizing that WhatsApp is becoming a bit of a pain. Especially when someone adds you to an annoying thing like WhatsApp group – a day ruiner when your iPhone starts to spazz out and you are left with tons of messages which are gibberish at best.
Little do people know that can actually keep themselves from being added to WhatsApp groups completely. It’s a very, very simple process and you’ll be surprised to know that you can actually set rules for it too.
Step 1. Launch WhatsApp on your iPhone.
Step 2. Tap on the Settings button in the bottom right hand corner.
Step 3. Now navigate to Account > Privacy > Groups.
Step 4. By default, the option is set to Everyone, which is not cool, meaning everyone and anyone can add you to WhatsApp groups. Change it to My Contacts, if you want people from your contact list only to be able to add you in groups. You can take things up a notch by selecting My Contacts Except, which allows you to select certain contacts who can’t add you to groups, such as your local ramen takeaway and so forth.
There’s nothing more annoying that being added to a WhatsApp Group which makes no sense at all. I’m pretty sure you’ve all been there, gave up your phone number thinking that you’d end up scoring a good deal on a TV set at the mall, only to realize that your phone number was used to add you to a pointless group with promotions which aren’t remotely close to a TV. Same thing happens whenever you are filling up the comments card in a restaurant, only to be added to a random WhatsApp Group later.
With the above technique, you can simply avoid being in a group altogether. Only those in your contacts list will dictate which group you can be in, or just completely ignore them as well.
Don’t you hate it when a random chat appears on your WhatsApp that says, “you were added by xyz to this group”? Fortunately, WhatsApp has a feature that allows you to stop unwanted contacts from adding you to random group chats. While the default option to let people add you to groups is “Everyone,” there are two more options that you can choose from to customise your experience on WhatsApp. The default option means you can be added to a group easily. It doesn’t matter if the person adding you to the group is on your contact list or not. However, you can stop this from happening.
WhatsApp recently rolled out a new privacy feature that allows users to decide who can add them to random groups. By default, the WhatsApp group privacy settings are set to ‘Everyone’ but you get two more options. Here is how you can change the privacy setting for group chats in various operating systems.
How to stop WhatsApp contacts from adding you to random groups
Go to WhatsApp Settings:
Android: Tap More options > Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups.
iPhone: Tap Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups.
KaiOS: Press Options > Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups.
You will now get three options:
1. Everyone: It will allow everyone – even people outside of your phone’s address book contacts to add you to groups without your approval.
2. My Contacts: This option lets you be added to groups by your contacts in the address book. If the group admin tries to add you to a group, they’ll get a pop-up that says they can’t add you and will be prompted to tap Invite to Group or press Continue. This will be followed by a send button. Hence, sending a private group invite through an individual chat. You get three days to accept the invitation or it expires.
3. My Contacts Except: It gives you the authority to choose the contacts you want to allow to add you to the groups. After selecting My Contacts Except… you can search for or select contacts to exclude. If a group admin you exclude tries to add you to a group, they’ll get a pop-up that says they can’t add you.

How many of you wake up to a constant stream of pointless messages from WhatsApp groups that you don’t even remember joining? Or maybe that dreaded family group that you can’t exit without being awkwardly added back by a long-lost uncle. As much fun and sometimes useful as WhatsApp groups are, they can as easily get frustrating when a stranger (or a distant relative, same thing) gets hold of your phone number and starts adding you to a whole bunch of nasty groups, whether by mistake or to plan a surprise party or just to mess with you.
Either way, just giving your phone number to someone for whatever reason shouldn’t give them the right to bother you on WhatsApp. Thankfully, WhatsApp has already thought this through and made it pretty simple to keep random people from adding you to their chat groups. All you need to do is tweak a few settings under the app’s privacy section. Here’s how you can get there:
- Tap on the vertical ellipses on the top right corner in WhatsApp and then tap on Settings.
- Head to Account, which should be the first option, and then select Privacy.
- Scroll down to the Groups subhead, under which you’ll see a list of options to pick from based on your privacy preference.
In that list, you can select My contacts to let only the people you know add you to WhatsApp groups. If you often hand out your phone number to different people outside your contact list, this is the way to go. However, you may still have an annoying friend or two who just can’t keep themselves from creating random groups and putting you in there. For people like this, there’s the My contacts except… option, which does exactly what it says on the tin.
There’s a chance that you may not prefer either of these options and would want those outside your contact list to include you in their groups, maybe for your business number, or it could be anything else. In that case, you can always remove all restrictions with the Everyone setting option.
None of these solutions are fool-proof, as group admins can still send you invitations privately and nudge you to join. But it should be good enough to give you control over what groups you want to be a part of and keep you safe from any unnecessary trouble.
A slight tweak in setting will let you decide who can add you to WhatsApp groups.
WhatsApp users need to go into Account Settings to change group settings
- The default group setting on WhatsApp is set to ‘everyone’
- WhatsApp users can customise group settings for more privacy
- WhatsApp admins can still send links to ask users to join groups
WhatsApp groups are a great way to stay connected to family, friends, or even colleagues, but the feature is often exploited by many to add tons of people to groups in order to sell products or promote services. These groups are often created without permission from participants and this could be frustrating for many. Most of us hate being a part of unnecessary groups and often consider if it’s rude to just exit a group. The best way out of this is to have a filter that will stop random people from adding you to groups.
How to prevent unknown users from adding you to WhatsApp groups
Thankfully, there is a setting that you can tweak in the privacy section of you WhatsApp account that spares you from getting added to random groups. This setting lets you customise who can add you to groups and, by default, the setting is set to ‘Everyone’, which means anyone with your phone number can add you in a group. It is important to note that group admins can send you invite links and nudge you to join groups, even after you tweak the settings. In order to avoid getting added to groups by random people, follow the steps below:
For many WhatsApp users, the experience has often turned bitter, even stressful and frustrating, because of some people adding them to groups that have uncomfortable conversations. Here are some WhatsApp tips that will ensure these nasty experiences don’t happen.
WhatsApp is a feature-rich app, which offers a wide range of settings that protect users’ privacy, including hiding profile photos, last seen status and much more. This means that other users on the app will not be able to see the previously mentioned information if they are not on their contact list. It allows users to ensure only those with whom they want to share their personal information are able to access it and not strangers. When it comes to groups, WhatsApp offers similar settings to protect users privacy while they are using the app, but sometimes even that is not enough to stop uncomfortable and nasty conversations from happening. Many times, while chatting with your family, friends and colleagues, someone takes advantage of the feature that can add any user to any group. It leads to users having to see text, photos, videos, spam messages that they are not at all interested in. Sometimes even more unpleasant conversations happen.

Well, people who face problems like this, have a solution at hand because WhatsApp offers a method to block this unseemly behaviour by strangers. This way, users can create an eco-system that is to their liking, which enables fun conversations with friends and family or productive chats with colleagues at work. So, here’s how you can block strangers from adding you to groups on WhatsApp without your permission. Remember the instructions are for WhatsApp users on Android devices.
Step 1) On WhatsApp for Android, tap the three-dot menu at the top right side, then tap on Settings.
Step 2) In the WhatsApp Settings menu, tap on the Account setting. Now tap on Privacy and select the Groups option.
Step 3) Check your privacy settings for the groups section. By default, the setting should be Everyone, but that means everyone can add you as long as they have your number. It is better to select the My Contacts option or My Contacts Except, which lets you exclude a few contacts from adding you to groups.
