Your social media feed is under assault by moving pictures.

In recent months, both Facebook and Twitter have enabled auto-play videos; whenever a video enters your feed or timeline, it automatically starts playing. At best, it’s an annoyance that chews through your data cap. At worst, the “feature” forces you to see videos of things you’d normally shy away from—a nastiness highlighted this morning after somebody murdered a pair of journalists on-camera in Virginia, then posted videos of the action to his social feeds, which were then re-shared widely.

Twitter and Facebook autoplay videos made me witness the murder of someone from multiple angles today. Good job technology

Fortunately, you can disable auto-play videos in both Twitter and Facebook. Here’s how.

How to disable Twitter’s auto-play videos

To disable Twitter’s auto-play videos, sign into the Twitter web client, then click on your profile photo and select Settings from the drop-down menu.

You’ll be dumped on the Account section of your settings. Simply scroll down to the “Video Tweets” option under Content, then uncheck the box that says “Video autoplay.”

The option you’ll want to disable.

Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen, re-enter your password to confirm the change, and you’re done.

To disable auto-play videos in Twitter’s Android app, tap the Options button (which looks like three stacked dots) and select Settings. Next, tap General, then Video autoplay. Here, select “Never play videos automatically.”

If you’re using an iPhone, tap Me in the lower-right corner, then navigate to Gear icon > Settings > Video autoplay and select “Never play videos automatically.”

How to disable Facebook’s auto-play videos

Disabling Facebook’s auto-play video is just as easy.

On the web, click the downward-facing arrow at the right of the blue menu bar at the top of the screen, then select Settings.

On the next page, select Video from the list of options on the left-hand side, then set the “Auto-Play Videos” drop-down menu to Off .

To disable auto-play videos on Facebook’s mobile apps, you’ll want to first open the Option “hamburger” menu at the top of the screen, which likes like three stacked horizontal lines. On Android, head to App Settings > Videos play automatically > Off; iPhone users should navigate to Settings > Videos > Autoplay > Off.

I’ve upgraded to chromium edge but now videos are autoplaying again. I had this disabled on classic Edge but can’t work out how to do this on the new version.

I’ve set “Media autoplay” to “Limit” in the “Site Permissions” section of settings but this doesn’t seem to have had any effect at all (yes, I’ve restarted Edge / Windows).

I had also had this problem with dev / beta builds of Edge but hadn’t got around to chasing it up until it became my primary browser.

In particular it’s annoying on the MSN new pages linked to from the new tab page in Edge when they all have autoplaying video.

Why isn’t there an option called “Block”?

You’ll probably find that the block option has to be enabled. Copy the next line into the address bar and press Enter:

edge://flags/#edge-autoplay-user-setting-block-option

Once this flag is enabled, you should see Block on the autoplay options menu.

How to stop twitter videos from autoplaying

Twitter is an amazing social media platform that allows you to browse through feeds of almost everything that interests you, whether it is tech advice, celebrity updates, pictures, news, recipes, etc. However, the twitter app for android defaults to auto-playing animated gifs and video on both cellular data and WiFi. This idea is entire unwelcomed for some people and can be due to certain reasons. This feature is also very annoying and can cause excessive battery consumption and unnecessary cellular data consumption. Fortunately, in case you do not want twitter auto-playing videos on the app, you can disable this auto-play videos and gifs feature using the Twitter app, or switch auto-play videos to work only with WiFi.

However, in case you prefer videos automatically playing in your Twitter stream every single time, then you won’t want to make this adjustment. Also, if you disable this feature, and you decide to turn it on again, just follow the same procedures or steps which I will be listing out here for you.

  • Why you should Stop Video Autoplay On Twitter

Like I said earlier, most Twitter users will prefer disabling the auto-play videos feature on twitter base on some certain reason. Below are some reasons why you may want to disable auto-play videos in your Twitter feeds. First of all, in case your cellular data keeps getting used up, and you can’t figure out why then turning off Twitter auto-play feature will greatly minimize the amount of data that the social media app is consuming.

Secondly, you may decide to disable auto-play video feature on Twitter is if you are suffering from photosensitive epilepsy, or in case you usually get affected staring at flashing photos. Visual stimuli, for example, flashing lights or patterns, can cause seizures in certain people. Sending a video or an animated gif can cause harm to certain people, in case they are very sensitive to these sort of images.

Also, playing video clips often need more device resources, which implies your battery will constantly get drained, once the Twitter app starts auto-playing videos without your permission. Normally, I use Twitter throughout my day to check up on news update, and it hardly consumes my battery. But when the auto-play video feature is enabled, my battery hardly last for two hours.

The last reason why you may want to disable the Twitter auto-play video feature is that some of these videos are uncensored and unfiltered. This is because any video tweeted or retweeted by someone you are following with automatically start playing, or whenever you are going through someone’s else’s feed, anything they have tweeted will be played. This means that you are at risk of watching what may be awful, unholy, unethical or annoying to you.

So, here’s how to Stop Video Autoplay On Twitter. Take a deep breath, and let’s get down to it.

One of the pesky things about surfing the internet is the recent barrage of autoplaying videos on websites.

You might be at work, opening a website to read some news, and suddenly a video will blast through your speakers. Worry not, we’ve got you covered. Here are some nifty ways you stop videos from playing automatically.

Social networks like Twitter and Facebook allow you to turn off autoplay directly from the settings menu. On Twitter, you’d find this option under ‘Setting> Content’.

There are plenty of extensions in the Chrome Store to help you out as well. Google said recently that it is working on a simpler solution for this task.

Safari

Apple’s browser doesn’t have a setting to stop autoplay for all sites. But it allows you to choose if you want to stop a particular site from automatically playing videos. Right click on the address bar to select ‘Settings for this website.’ Under that, you can choose either ‘Stop Media with Sound’ or ‘Never Auto-Play.’

Firefox

Firefox allows an easy option to stop autoplay for all the websites that play media with sound automatically. Under ‘Preferences,’ go to ‘Privacy & Security’ tab and select ‘Always Ask’ or ‘Don’t Autoplay’ for a peace of your mind.

Whether you don’t want to get distracted while you’re on Twitter or you just want to save your precious data, stopping Twitter from autoplaying videos is the right thing to do if you want to avoid the problems I just mentioned.

I recently showed how you can do the same thing by stopping videos from autoplaying on Facebook, and today, it’s Twitter’s turn.

So below is a step by step way of achieving this and it’s really easy.

How to Disable Video Autoplay on Twitter (on Android)

Step 1: Open up the Twitter App and tap your profile picture on the top left.

How to stop twitter videos from autoplaying

Step 2: Among the list of options you see, tap Settings and Privacy.

How to stop twitter videos from autoplaying

Step 3: Under the General section, tap Data Usage.

How to stop twitter videos from autoplaying

Step 4: Now you have two options that you can use to disable video autoplay on Twitter.

Option 1: Data Saver

How to stop twitter videos from autoplaying

If you check the box on the right, the Twitter app is not only going to stop videos from autoplaying, but also show you only low quality images.

Now if you don’t care about how sharp images look on Twitter and are only interested in saving data, then I’ll suggest choosing this option, but if you do, skip it and use option 2.

I’ll recommend you skip this, because images on Twitter aren’t that data consuming, but if you really want to save data, check it.

Option 2: Video Autoplay

How to stop twitter videos from autoplaying

This option only stops videos from playing automatically on Twitter, you can also set it to only play videos while you’re using a WiFi network. As you can see in the picture above.

But if you don’t want videos playing regardless of any network you’re on (mobile or WiFi), then just select Never.

How to stop twitter videos from autoplaying

Step 5: Tap the back button, head back to your Twitter newsfeed and enjoy using the app without videos autoplaying.

Conclusion

An innocent Twitter video that autoplays may just be one of the reasons why you spend your whole day on the app just smiling or even crying (in laughter) while starting at your phone’s screen.

If you’re only interested in saving your phone’s data or you just don’t like the fact that you spend so much time watching videos on Twitter, the steps above will definitely help by stopping those funny cat and dog videos from automatically playing.

On social media, it’s easy to get distracted.

Let me know in the comments if you have any issues disabling videos automatically playing on Twitter and I’ll help you out as fast as I can.
