Masvidal finally gets his title fight against Usman at UFC 251.

UFC 251 became a unique fight in UFC history.

Most assumed that the welterweight title would no longer be on the line this Saturday after Gilbert Burns tested positive for COVID-19 and was removed from UFC 251’s main event title fight against Kamaru Usman.

The fight went on, thanks to Jorge Masvidal, who is perhaps the UFC’s most high profile welterweight.

Entertain your brain with the coolest news from streaming to superheroes, memes to video games.

Masvidal — the man known as Street Jesus who most recently beat Nate Diaz for the one-off BMF title — officially passed a mandatory COVID-19 test to replace Gilbert Burns and face off against Usman in the main event of UFC 251.

Which is great news for fans. Usman versus Masvidal is the fight most people wanted to see in the first place. Previous negotiations between UFC boss Dana White and Masvidal had gone awry, forcing White to go with Burns instead, but desperate times call for desperate measures and it looks like White and Masvidal got the deal done at the 11th hour for this blockbuster title fight.

Right now Masvidal is one of the most charismatic and high profile fighters in the UFC. As a style match-up it’s fascinating. Masvidal is a striker with world-class take down defense. Usman is a grinding wrestler, with a great gas tank and an evolving kickboxing game. Given this is a short-notice fight for Masvidal, Usman will be the betting favorite — but remember what happened the last time Masvidal faced off against a grinding wrestler?

You’d be crazy to write off Masvidal here.

But as of a few days before the fight, another interesting wrinkle arose: Masvidal’s head coach Mike Brown just tested positive for COVID-19.

What about the undercard?

It’s fantastic. The main card in particular is spectacular, packing three title fights. Max Holloway attempts to regain his featherweight crown against current champ Alexander Volkanovski. Absolute banger. Petr Yan versus Jose Aldo might not be the bantamweight title fight most MMA experts wanted, but it’s a great match-up featuring two of the best strikers in the UFC.

We also get to see the return of former strawweight queen Rose Namajunas. Man. This is a UFC card for the ages and you’d be crazy to miss it.

The UFC 251 main card starts at 10 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Pacific | 3 a.m. GMT) today, July 11.
UFC 251 main prelims are now under way, having started at 8 p.m. Early prelims began at 6. Results, as we get them, are below.

Fight night is filled with decisions, as UFC 251 live stream is through the early prelims, in the main prelims, with the main card coming in less than an hour. It’s like none that we’ve ever seen before, taking place at UFC: Fight Island — and we’ve got results below.

Yes, what once seemed like a joke, and then a cancelled attempt at craziness, is now reality, in Abu Dhabi. At the top of the card we’ve got the welterweight championship match with Kamaru Usman defending his title against third-ranked Jorge Masvidal — and I’m hearing good reasons why either could win.

Masvidal’s a threat to take the title because of his explosive KO capability, but can he be expected to fight at the level we expect when he took this booking on six days notice?!

Usman’s the more-prepared fighter of the two, and has that innate ability to just slow a match down to his own pace and grind it out to a win. This should be a fantastic fight.

And from what we’ve heard, UFC is doing bloodsport in the age of COVID correctly, not only testing talent when they fly to the island, but several times after arrival. All in all, 3,300 tests are expected to be performed.

After the 630-person crew of athletes, staffers and fellow workers arrive on the island, they’re entering a Safe Zone they cannot leave, which has checkpoints to stop the public from entering. No, it’s not Mortal Kombat, it’s UFC 251.

UFC 251 Fight Card

  • Kamru Osman vs George Masvidal (Welterweight)
  • Alexander Volkanowski vs Max Holloway (Wings)
  • Petr Yan vs Jose Aldo (bantamweight)
  • Jessica Andred vs Rose Namajunas (Female Strawweight)
  • Amanda Ribas vs Paige VanZant (women’s flyweight)

Most UFC pay-per-view features at least one championship bout, and sometimes, MMA fans will get lucky with two title fights. The star-studded UFC 251 fight card features not two but three contests for men’s welterweight, feederweight and bantamweight belts, as well as a much-awaited rematch between former women’s straightweight champions Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas.

The main fight is defending welterweight champion Kamru Osman against Jorge Masvidal. With 16 wins and one singles defeat under his belt, Usman is one of the brightest stars in the UFC at the moment, but no newbie to the throne to challenge: George Masvidal with an impressive record of 35 wins and no losses. Claims to be. Both fighters use heavy-handed styles in the Octagon, most of which have come through their recent decision to win. UFC 251 will defend Osman’s second title since winning the championship in March of last year.

The co-main event at UFC 251 is a rematch between defending champions Alexander Volkanowski (21-1) and Max Holloway (21-5), two legendary fighters who require little introduction among MMA fans. Both are top-order UFC wings and faced off last December at UFC 245, where Volkanovski defeated Holloway via unanimous decision to claim the title. Holloway, still the No. 1 fighter on the men’s winged roster, would be hungry enough to regain his belt, but Volkanowski didn’t let his first UFC title defense end so easily in frustration.

The third and final championship match on the UFC 251 fight card is a contest between Petr Yan (14-1) and Jose Aldo (28-6) for the vacant bantamweight title. A closer look at the records of these two fighters reveals that they are two avenues that are crossing different paths: Yan is a rising UFC talent who signed with promotions in 2018 (and yet one The match has not lost), while Aldo has suffered from a string of recent defeats, having lost five of their last eight fights. This competition will be a fierce one for the empty bantamweight belt, and you can bet that a veteran like Aldo will be eager to prove he still has what it takes to be a champion.
