Do you have a webcam? Are you trying to figure out how to record video footage with it on your Linux PC? Not sure how to take pictures with it? We can help! Follow along with this guide as we show you how to record your webcam on Linux!
Note: for this guide to work, you will need a webcam that is compatible with the Linux platform. Ensure you are using a webcam that works with Linux by installing the correct drivers for your Linux distribution, or by purchasing one that has open-source drivers included in the Linux kernel.
Installing Cheese on Linux
To record webcam footage on Linux, you will need to install a webcam utility. There are many types of webcam utilities on Linux. However, in this guide, we will be focusing on the Cheese application.
Why Cheese? It is the most reliable out of all of the other webcam apps on Linux. Furthermore, it is the most modern and the most widely used of all the other apps available. No other webcam app is as popular as Cheese on Linux, or as easy to install.
To start the installation of the Cheese webcam app on your Linux PC, start by launching a terminal window on the Linux desktop. To launch a terminal window press Ctrl + Alt + T or Ctrl + Shift + T on the keyboard. Alternatively, search for “Terminal” in the app menu.
Once the terminal window is open and ready to use on the Linux desktop, follow the command-line instructions outlined below that correspond with the Linux OS, you use to get everything going.
Note: you may have Cheese installed on your Linux PC already. To check to see if you already have the app installed, open up your app menu, and search for “Cheese.” If you cannot find it, you must follow the installation instructions in this guide to use the app.
On Ubuntu Linux, it is possible to quickly install the Cheese webcam application with the following Apt command below.
Are you using Debian Linux? Need to get the latest Cheese app up and running? Use the following Apt-get command below in a terminal window.
Those on Arch Linux can quickly get the Cheese webcam utility up and running by executing the following Pacman installation command in a terminal window.
Fedora Linux users have access to the Cheese webcam app via the Dnf installation command. To get it working on your system, enter the command below in a terminal window.
Are you on OpenSUSE Linux? Need access to the Cheese webcam program on your PC? Use the Zypper command below in a terminal window to get it working.
Many Linux users may not know this, but the Cheese webcam application is available as a Flatpak application. So, even if you’re using an obscure Linux distribution, you’ll always have access to Cheese so long as your distribution supports Flatpak.
To start the installation, follow the guide here to set up the Flatpak runtime. Then, enter the commands below to get the app working.
Recording video with Cheese
Recording video footage with Cheese is simple thanks to the straightforward user interface it has. To start the recording process, launch the application on your Linux desktop. You can launch it by searching for “Cheese” in the app menu.
Once the Cheese application is open, ensure your webcam is being captured. You’ll know that your camera is being captured if you see yourself on the screen. If your camera is not being captured, unplug the device from your PC, and close Cheese. Then, plug it back in and re-launch the app.
When you’ve confirmed, Cheese is capturing your webcam, follow the step-by-step instructions down below to learn how to record video from your webcam using Cheese on Linux.
Step 1: Locate the “Video” section of the Cheese app and click on it with the mouse. Selecting this option will take Cheese into video mode. On some installations, you may not need to select “Video,” as it opens there by default.
Step 2: In video mode, your camera should be displaying a live feed in the preview window. To confirm the quality of the camera, watch yourself in Cheese, and move around a little bit to confirm that the app is capturing video correctly.
Step 3: Find the webcam icon and click it with the mouse. It will instantly start recording. It will record audio from the default microphone on your Linux PC.
Step 4: When you’ve finished recording your webcam and want to end the recording, click on the stop button.
You’ll be able to access all webcam recordings in the “Videos” folder of your home directory.
Taking pictures with Cheese
Did you know that it is possible to take pictures with your webcam? Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Find the “Photo” section in Cheese, and click on it with the mouse.
Step 2: After selecting the “Photo” option, Cheese will enter picture mode. From here, select the webcam icon to take a picture.
Pictures taken with Cheese are saved to the “Photo” folder of your home directory.
Windows 10 has an app called Camera that lets you use your webcam to record videos and take photos. It’s definitely better than having to download spyware/malware-ridden third-party webcam recording software. In this article, I’ll walk you through the process of using the app and adjusting the various settings.
One of the problems with the new slick interface in Windows 10 apps is that sometimes it’s too simplistic and clean. Literally, they have removed buttons and other visual elements that you otherwise expect. For example, there are literally three other buttons in addition to the picture and video buttons.
Note that if you want to add filters, edit, crop or draw on your picture, you should use the accompanying Photos app in Windows 10.
Using Windows 10 Camera App
Before we get to that, lets go through the basics. Firstly, open the app and if you don’t already have a webcam built-in or connected to the PC, you’ll see a simple black screen that says We can’t find your camera.
Once you do connect the camera, it will ask you for permission to use the webcam inside the Camera app.
Once you do this, you should be able to see your webcam in a full screen window with a couple of buttons on the top and side:
Note that if your webcam is not working with the Windows 10 camera app, it probably means Windows 10 does not recognize the webcam. This is probably due to the driver not being compatible with Windows 10. You’ll have to go to the manufacturer’s website and see if they have a version of the driver for Windows 10. If not, you’ll just have to wait until one is released.
Now here’s the fun part! How do you take a picture or video using the Camera app in Widows 10? Just click or tap on the camera icon to take a picture and click or tap on the video camera icon to start a video. By default, it will take a picture or video and then store it in the Camera Roll folder in the Pictures folder. When you click, it will make a picture snapping sound and then the image will slide off the screen to the bottom right icon.
Note that on a tablet device, you’ll have a third icon, which will allow you to take a panoramic photo. Also, you might have to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the app bar, which will let you change the camera (if there is more than one), set the time, change the exposure, etc.
To take a video, you have to click on the Video mode button so that it turns white and then click on the button again.
The timer will start at the bottom of the screen and all you have to do is click again on the button to stop the recording.
If you click on the small gear icon at the top right, you can adjust the settings. The first option is what happens when you press and hold the camera button. By default, it just takes a single photo. You can change it to Photo Burst or Video.
Next, based on your camera, you can pick the resolution that should be captured. Next, you can add a framing grid as an overlay on the camera. The choices are Rule of thirds, Golden ratio, Crosshairs and Square. This is useful if you are using the camera app on the tablet device like the Surface Pro.
Next, if you set the timer in the camera app, which I explain below, you can have the camera app automatically take a time lapse. So if you set the timer to every 5 seconds, it will keep taking pictures until you press the camera button again.
For videos, you can choose the recording quality, which will again depend on the camera connected to your computer or built into your device. To reduce flicker while recording videos, choose the highest refresh rate listed. Also, if you have a tablet, make sure to turn on Digital video stabilization when taking videos.
Lastly, there are some links below where you can change the default location where photos and videos are saved and choose whether the camera can use location info or not.
Back on the main screen, click on the small clock to adjust the timer. This will only show up when you are in picture mode. The intervals that you can choose are timer off, 2 seconds, 5 seconds and 10 seconds.
Click on the arrow to expand the list and you’ll see one more icon that lets you adjust the brightness. A half-circle appears and you can simply click and drag along the circle to make the adjustments.
Once you take a photo or video, clicking on the small icon at the bottom right will bring up the Photos app for viewing. Also, both pictures and videos are stored in the Camera Roll folder under Pictures.
That’s pretty much all there is to the Camera app. Remember, to edit your photos or videos, you have to go to the Photos app. Enjoy!

Why is My Camera Not Working on Windows 10?
A webcam will not work on a Windows 10 laptop if the recommended drivers are not available. This might happen if the Windows on the laptop has just been updated. Another reason why a camera may not work on a Windows operating system is that the installed anti-virus software may be blocking the webcam.
Also, the privacy settings of a Windows operating system may be hiding the webcam app if it is enabled. The last reason why a webcam may not work on a laptop is that the app is corrupted.
Why is My Camera Showing a Black Screen?
The camera on a laptop may show a black screen if the lens is covered with dirt. Gunk may accumulate on the lens of a camera if the laptop is kept or used in a dirty or dusty environment. Wiping the webcam area with a dry microfiber towel on a regular basis will prevent the accumulation of dirt.
Also, a MacBook or an iPhone is not designed to accept third-party camera apps. Hence, even if these apps are installed successfully, they will display a blank screen when they are launched.

Whether you use Zoom, Skype or Microsoft Teams, the webcam on your home PC or laptop device has probably never been as active as it is during this pandemic.
Most of us have a camera built into our phone, tablet, laptop, or a desktop webcam we use for work, study or virtual socialising.
Unfortunately, this privilege can leave us vulnerable to an online attack known as camfecting. This is when hackers take control of your webcam remotely. They do this by disabling the “on” light which usually indicates the camera is active – so victims are none the wiser.
Many of our device cameras remain unsecured. In fact, research has suggested globally there are more than 15,000 web camera devices (including in homes and businesses) readily accessible to hackers, without even needing to be hacked.
Take a tip from Mark Zuckerberg
When your laptop is turned off its webcam can’t be activated. However, many of us keep our laptops in hibernation or sleep mode (which are different). In this case, the device can be woken by a cybercriminal, and the camera turned on. Even Mark Zuckerberg has admitted he covers his webcam and masks his microphone.
The number of recorded instances of image captured through unauthorised webcam access is relatively low. This is because most attacks happen without the user ever realising they’ve been compromised. Thus, these attacks go unaccounted for.
It’s important to consider why someone would choose to hack into your home device. It’s unlikely an attacker will capture images of you for personal blackmail, or their own creepy exploits. While these spam emails sent in a bid to convince users they’ve been “caught” on camera. But why?
Shaming people for “inappropriate” webcam use in this way is a scam, one which generates considerable ransom success. Many victims pay up in fear of being publicly exposed.
Most genuine webcam hacks are targeted attacks to gather restricted information. They often involve tech-savvy corporate groups carrying out intelligence gathering and covert image capturing. Some hacks are acts of corporate espionage, while others are the business of government intelligence agencies.
There are two common acquisition techniques used in camfecting attacks. The first is known as an RAT (Remote Administration Tool) and the second takes place through false “remote tech support” offered by malicious people.
Genuine remote tech support usually comes from your retail service provider (such as Telstra or Optus). We trust our authorised tech support people, but you shouldn’t extend that trust to a “friend” you hardly know offering to use their own remote support software to “help you” with a problem.
An example of an RAT is a Trojan virus delivered through email. This gives hackers internal control of a device.
When a Trojan virus infects a device, it’s not just the webcam that is remotely accessed, it’s the whole computer. This means access to files, photos, banking and a range of data.
The ability to install a RAT has been around for several years. In 2015, a popular RAT could be purchased on the internet for just US $40. The malware (harmful software) can be deployed via an email, attachment, or flash drive.
Those wanting to learn how to use such tools need look no further than YouTube, which has many tutorials. It has never been easier for hackers.
Webcams are everywhere
Our homes are getting “smarter” each year. In 2018, the average Australian household reportedly had 17 connected devices.
Let’s say there’s one or two laptops, three or four mobile phones and tablets, a home security camera system and a smart TV with a built-in camera for facial recognition.
Add a remote video doorbell, a talking doll named My Friend Cayla, the drone helicopter you got for Christmas, and the robot toy that follows you around the house – and it’s possible your household has more than 20 IP accessible cameras.
To better understand your vulnerabilities you can try a product like Shodan. This search engine allows you to identify which of your devices can be seen by others through an internet connection.
Practise ‘cyberhygiene’ at home
Placing a piece of black tape over a camera is one simple low-tech solution for webcam hacking. Turning your laptop or desktop computer off when not in use is also a good idea. Don’t let a device’s hibernation, sleep or low power mode lure you into a false sense of safety.
At work you may have firewalls, antivirus, and intrusion detection systems provided by your company. Such protections are void for most of us when working from home. “Cyberhygiene” practices will help secure you from potential attacks.
Always use secure passwords, and avoid recycling old ones with added numbers such as “Richmond2019”, or “Manutd2020”. Also, make sure your antivirus and operating system software is regularly updated.
Most of all, use common sense. Don’t share your password (including your home wifi password), don’t click suspicious links, and routinely clear your devices of unnecessary apps.
When it comes to using webcams, you may wonder if you’re ever completely safe. This is hard to know – but rest assured there are steps you can take to give yourself a better chance.
With teams working remotely, and learning now happening predominantly online, there are plenty of reasons to record your screen these days:
Native apps for recording your screen on a Windows PC or macOS offer some basic screen recording tools, but there’s a better screen recorder that makes it possible to record pretty much anything — in high definition at up to 1080p — with just a few clicks.

You can get started with screen recording by following the five ridiculously simple steps below.
How to Screen Record with Panopto Express
1. Open Panopto Express in your browser: https://www.panopto.com/record/
To configure your recording set up, you will use the buttons at the top of the recorder to select the audio, video, and screens you’d like to record.
2. Select the screen(s) you want to record
Panopto Express will automatically detect screens and monitors connected to your computer. Click the screen icon at the top right and select the first screen, application window, or browser tab you want to show in your screen recording. Click the box for “Share audio” in the bottom left of the configuration window to capture your system audio — this will let you record the audio from anything on your screen such as a video conference or a webinar. Then click “Share” in the bottom right of the configuration window.
To record an additional screen, application window, or browser tab in the same recording, click the screen icon again, select what you want to record, and then click “Share.” You’ll do this until you are sharing all of the screens, windows, and tabs you want to record.
If you need to remove a screen you’ve chosen to record, simply click the “X” that appears in your preview in the top right of that video feed when you mouse-over.
3. Select and test audio for your recording
Panopto Express will also detect connected microphones. If you would like to record narration or yourself presenting along with the screen recording, click the microphone icon at the top left and make sure the checkmark is over the microphone you want to use to capture your voice. Test your sound by talking — the oscilloscope will react to your voice and other sounds your microphone is picking up.
4. Add a webcam video to your screen recording (optional)
To capture video of yourself presenting along with your screencast, or to add any other video to your recording, click the video camera icon at the top and click the video feed(s) you want to capture. You will see a checkmark over the connected video sources you’ve selected to record.

How it works
Hit ‘Record webcam’ in Clipchamp and allow access to your microphone and camera.
Record your webcam video and it will automatically appear in your Media Library in the editor.
Drag and drop your clip to the timeline and edit it by clipping, adding motion titles and more.
Finally, you can export your video to YouTube or save it to your computer.
Internal camera & microphone
Our recorder works with your computer’s built-in webcam and mic. If there’s more than one available, you can choose your preferred one before starting a recording.
Video editing options
We included a few video editing tools directly in the webcam recorder. Edit after finishing a recording, after saving the original or skip editing altogether.
You can record videos at a resolution of 360p, 480p, 720p or 1080p. Most webcams have a maximum resolution of 720p, therefore 1080p is possible when your webcam supports it.
Clipchamp never has access to your videos unlike any other online provider. Webcam recordings always stay on your computer unless you make use of one of our integrated upload options.
USB webcam & external microphone
You can select an external camera and/or mic as the source/s for your video and audio input. This works with USB webcams that have mics built-in as well as standalone microphones.
Our online recorder works in-browser for Mac, Linux, Windows and Chromebooks. It’s the video tool of choice for thousands of schools around the world that use Chromebooks in their classrooms.
