How to take screenshots on an iphone x xr xs and xs max

With the arrival of the iPhone X and its lack of a Home button, Apple had to change the way to handle some relatively common tasks. One of those is taking a screenshot, and the same method has carried over to the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max.

Taking a screenshot on an iPhone X, XR, XS, and XS Max is the same combination of button presses no matter which device you own, and we expect that to remain the case for the foreseeable future now that Apple has taken the next step on the company’s long road towards removing the physical Home button altogether. That’s all just fine, but if you don’t know how to take a screenshot now that the Home button is no more, you’re out of luck no matter how great that Liquid Retina or OLED screen may look. There’s no need to fret though. We’re here to set the record straight.

Here are the steps you need to snap a screenshot on one of Apple’s recent iPhones.

Similarly to previous iPhones, the process requires pressing two buttons simultaneously. This time those buttons are the Side button and the Volume Up button. The Side button is the same button you use when sleeping or waking your device; we highlighted both buttons below.

How to take screenshots on an iphone x xr xs and xs max

Once you have pressed and released the two buttons, you will hear the familiar shutter sound (unless you have your phone muted) and your screenshot is taken. You’ll also see a preview of the screenshot you just took. The preview will disappear after a few seconds, but if you’d like to edit or mark the screenshot up, you can tap it and do so before saving it in the Photos app or discarding it altogether.

The positioning of the two buttons used for taking a screenshot has an upside and a downside. On the upside, it’s much easier to take a screenshot one-handed now that you don’t have to press the Home and Side buttons together. On the downside (and it’s not that big a downside), it easy to take a screenshot accidentally if you hit those buttons while just holding your phone.

The fact that the iPhone X, X S , X S Max, and X R don’t have Home buttons means that you’ll need to learn a few new gestures. There’s the home gesture, the multitasking gesture, and even a new way to access Apple Pay, among others. But one less-common action that has issues due to the lack of a Home button is taking a screenshot.

Thankfully, it’s still not very hard to do, and there are actually a few ways you can go about doing it. The first one is unique to the iPhone X, X S , X S Max, and X R , and the second one can be done on other iPhones models with just a small tweak.

Option 1: Use Side + Volume Up

Instead of pressing the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button (aka the power button) like you used to, all you’ll have to do is press and hold the new Side button and the Volume Up button simultaneously. By the way, “Side button” is Apple’s new term for the power button since it does a lot more than just wake your phone now.

So basically, just squeeze your iPhone X, X S , X S Max, or X R on both sides simultaneously, making sure your fingers are positioned over the Side button and the Volume Up button, then you’ll have a screenshot! And because these devices run either iOS 11 or iOS 12, you’ll also see the new markup screen after taking a screenshot, which even lets you annotate your image.

  • Don’t Miss: 18 Tips for iOS 11’s New Screenshot Tool on Your iPhone

Note that if you hold the buttons for too long, you will bring up the screen with the “slide to power off” switch and Emergency SOS option. If you continue holding the buttons past that screen, you will start the countdown clock for Emergency SOS to call 911, so be careful.

It may take a few tries to get used to the new screenshot gesture, but it’s very similar to most Android phones if you’ve ever used one of those.

Option 2: Use AssistiveTouch

If you find the new button combination to be a bit awkward, you have another option by enabling the triple-click Accessibility Shortcuts gesture and using AssistiveTouch.

If this is the only reason you’ll be using AssistiveTouch, Apple’s on-screen tool for those with problems pressing buttons and using swipe gestures, you can make screenshotting the only thing it does. To do so, just make sure “AssistiveTouch” is the only thing checked in the “Accessibility Shortcuts” preferences at the bottom of the main “Accessibility” settings menu.

Next, go to the “AssistiveTouch” preferences in the main “Accessibility” settings menu, and choose how you want to take a screenshot. If you’re primarily screenshotting with this, change “Single-Tap” to say “Screenshot.” And if you’d like to access the main AssistiveTouch menu still, you can change “Double-Tap” to “Open Menu.”

Now, to take the screenshot, triple-click the Side button, and you’ll see a gray Home button icon appear on your screen. Tap that once to take a screenshot. The gray icon will disappear temporarily so that it’s not in the actual screenshot.

If you don’t want to use the triple-click gesture to enabled and disable the AssistiveTouch on-screen button, you can also add “Accessibility Shortcuts” as a control in your Control Center, so you can just swipe down the Control Center, tap on the icon, and select “AssistiveTouch.”

While you’re here, I’d also like to point out that you can now record your screen without jailbreaking. It’s a pretty simple process, but we’ve outlined how it works with a full guide.

Method #2: Take Screenshot on iPhone X, XR, XS and XS Max using Assistive Touch

Step 2. Tap on Accessibility or if you can’t find Accessibility, tap General then select Accessibility.

If you select Double-Tap then you need to Double-Tap to take a screenshot and the last one is Long Press.

Step 6. From the list, select Screenshot.

You can take a one-handed screenshot at any time with the screenshot option added to your Assistive Touch menu by pressing the Assistive Touch button followed by the screenshot button. Screenshots were taken on iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max will appear in the Photos app, where they can be found in the Screenshots photos album, or in the iPhone’s regular camera roll.

Conclusion

Want to take a screenshot of iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or iPhone XS Max? Of course you can snap screenshots of iPhone X-series, but you’ve undoubtedly noticed by now that iPhone X line has no Home button, and thus the familiar screenshot method pressing the Home Button and the Power Button no longer works to capture the screen of iPhone X, XR, XS, XS max.

Instead, the iPhone X, XS, XR uses a new and different button pressing combination to snap screenshots. It’s equally simple as what you used to use for snapping screen captures of iOS devices, but because it’s entirely new it may take a bit of getting used to before the new screenshot method becomes habit for iPhone X series owners.

You might want to practice it a few times to get the hang of it.

How to Screenshot iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max

  • Press Volume Up button and Power button together at the same time

How to take screenshots on an iphone x xr xs and xs max

You must press the Volume Up button and Power button concurrently to take a screenshot of iPhone X, XR, XS. When the screenshot is successful, you will hear the familiar shutter camera sound, then see a little thumbnail of the screenshot preview appear in the bottom left corner of the screen.

The Power button is on the right side of the iPhone X, XS, XR, and the Volume Up button is the topmost button on the left side of iPhone X, XR, XS (it’s the button, not the little mute switch).

Some people refer to the Power button as the Side button or the Lock button, whatever you want to call the button the functionality is the same and it is a required step for taking a screenshot on iPhone X, iPhone XR, or iPhone XS.

A quick warning: do not HOLD the Power button and Volume Up button for too long, because it will quickly attempt to trigger the Shutdown screen and the Emergency SOS feature. When held too long, Emergency SOS will go a step further and then activate and attempt to call local authorities and emergency services, which is likely not what you want to do if you’re simply trying to take a screenshot. So beware of how that. Just a quick simple concurrent press of Power and Volume Up will snap the screenshot without doing anything else.

Notice while still using a dual button press procedure, this is different from screenshotting iPad or screenshotting iPhone models prior to iPhone X. It’s also worth noting that the process of taking screenshots with iOS 11, iOS 10, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, or iPhone 8 Plus was adjusted ever so slightly (at least in perception which required a minor behavior adjustment for some users) but remained the same with Home button and Power button pressing, whereas iPhone X, XR, XS is completely new behavior with a new button press.

And in case you were wondering, screenshots from iPhone X and newer are a substantial resolution of 1125 x 2436 pixels, making a large and tall image.
