If you’re sharing an Amazon Echo speaker with other people, the latest update to Alexa should make your life a bit easier. Starting today, Amazon’s AI assistant will be able to distinguish between multiple voices and provide personally-tailored responses. All you have to do is go to the Alexa app’s settings, click Your Voice, and teach Alexa your voice by reading aloud 10 phrases. The company says that the data will be stored in the cloud, which will be used to work across other Echo devices and most third-party Alexa-enabled devices.
Voice profiles essentially allow Alexa to tailor the information that it gives you. For instance, when you say, “Call mom,” Alexa will call your mom, not your roommate’s. Or when shopping, Alexa will know to which Amazon account to add the items. By default, Google Assistant responds to two wake words, these are “OK Google” and “Hey Google.” However, the AI assistant can also respond to a little-known but highly delightful wake word, Hey Boo Boo.
Originally, Google Assistant on phones could only respond to “OK Google.” But an update in December 2017 made it possible for phone users too to use “Hey Google” in addition to the other phrase. At this point, these are the only two words you can use to wake your Google Assistant.
Why did Google set OK Google and Hey Google as the Google Home wake words?
There are a number of reasons why Google could have chosen these wake words other than the obvious one – reinforcing their brand. First, their choice is gender-neutral unlike the names of other virtual assistants (Siri, Alexa and Cortana). Women have always been associated with assistant and clerical roles and the idea of a gendered assistant reinforces that idea.
A second reason could have to do with the fact that these wake words do not interfere with real-life identities. The names of Google Assistant competitors are real-life names and you might have someone in your household going by those names. And this causes pretty interesting situations. But Hey Google and OK Google would never cause confusion.
An even more important reason could be that using two words instead of one is more difficult to spoof. For systems that use a single wake word, the chances of false positives are much higher than when it is a phrase. As such, there have been instances of virtual assistants listening to and recording conversations that were not meant for them. Google Home is highly unlikely to wake up at random sounds thanks to the wake word (phrase) choice.
Why change Google Home’s wake word?
In spite of all the above benefits, you might still have compelling reasons to want to change Google Assistant’s wake word. For instance, if for whatever reason you have a pet named Google, then there might be a little confusion between the animal and the AI assistant. It could also be that the toddler in your house finds it hard to say Google.
At times too, Google Home fails to recognize or respond to the wake word, especially when used by a non-native English speaker. In both of these cases, you might wish for a simpler option to give everyone access to the assistant.
Getting the opportunity to customize Google Assistant’s name would also greatly enhance user experience. You might agree that “Hey Google” and “OK Google” do not exactly roll off the tongue with ease. Plus it lacks the personification aspect and might to some users make the whole experience seem unnatural, like talking to a computer.
More importantly, you might have multiple Google Home devices in your smart home. In cases where such devices are in close proximity, renaming one might help avert confusion. For example, if there are two smart speakers in adjacent rooms, you could have a hard time identifying the one you want to talk to. Referring to them by different names makes things clear.
Can you change Google Home’s name to something else?
Unfortunately, for Google Home users, there is no official way to change your Google Assistant’s wake word yet. This means that you have to work with the two official phrases. Alternatively, you could go for “OK Boo Boo” to keep things fun and get your toddler in on the action.
On a brighter note, a Google app teardown revealed that in the future, a new feature might change this situation for the better if it ever gets implemented. An analysis by 9to5google revealed that an update might allow users to give their Google Assistant custom wake words. It is noteworthy though that they conducted this analysis by decompiling an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store.
The files are known as APKs and they contain lines of code hinting at possible future features. However, Google may or may not implement these updates and the interpretation might not be perfect.
With that in mind, the analysis completed a teardown of Google app 7.20 APK and discovered a new option known as “Teach your Assistant to recognize.” This feature would allow users to instruct the virtual assistant to respond to your wake word of choice. The code also revealed that Google Assistant would offer wake word suggestions at the onset. However, even with the new wake words enabled, the Assistant would still be able to respond to the two original options.

Google Assistant on Google Home is now able to support up to six user accounts and detect unique voice signatures, the company announced today.
This allows Google Home users to customize a number of features, from the answer to the question “What’s on my calendar?” to the “Tell me about my day?” feature that provides specific commute, weather, and news for each user. It also includes features such as nickname, work location, payment information, and linked accounts like Google Play, Spotify or Netflix.
Since its launch last fall, Google Assistant on Google Home has become able to answer questions, provide personal info (like calendar or flight information), and convey a unique personality. Google Home can also order items from more than 50 retailers across the United States by voice and set flight tracking alerts.
The news of Google Home being able to support multiple accounts should not come as a surprise to close followers of the intelligent assistant.
Initial hints at multi-user support emerged last month from Android application package code. And a few weeks back, Google Assistant users saw an unexpected card in the Discover tab of the Google Home app stating that the voice-powered intelligent assistant could support multiple users. The change was announced today in a blog post by product manager Yury Pinsky.
A source familiar with the matter told VentureBeat the card declaring “Multiple users now supported” was actually released early, as the result of a malfunction by the Google Home app. Now that the multi-user feature is available, you can add new users by tapping the “Multiple users now supported” card or by going to the Devices area of Google Home (in the top right-hand corner of the app or the sandwich menu in the top left-hand corner).
Once in the Devices area, choose to “Link Your Account.”
The assistant will then ask you to say the phrases “Ok Google” and “Hey Google” two times each. Those phrases are then analyzed by a neural network to “detect certain characteristics of a person’s voice,” according to the Pinsky blog post.
“From that point on, any time you say ‘Ok Google’ or ‘Hey Google’ to your Google Home, the neural network will compare the sound of your voice to its previous analysis so we can understand if it’s you speaking or not. This comparison takes place only on your device, in a matter of milliseconds,” according to the blog post.
A Google spokesperson said unique voice signatures will be tied to each individual Google Home and not used for other purposes. Companies like Mattersight are exploring ways to tie unique voice signatures to targeted advertising should assistants like Alexa and Google choose to open to advertising.
Ads on assistants has been a contentious topic as of late following Burger King and Beauty and the Beast advertisements involving Google Home. Unique voice signatures tied to each Google Home means if you have multiple Google Home smart speakers you will need to create unique voice signatures for each device.
Google declined to respond to questions about how the search and advertising giant may use personalized user signatures or how allowing multiple accounts may lead to increased usage in classrooms or the workplace. The company also declined to state whether multiple user accounts will finally give Google Assistant the ability to add calendar events.
The Trusted Home feature for Google Home was previously able to train Google Assistant to respond to the “OK Google” wake word for a primary user, and the assistant has always been able to chat with a group of users. But without unique voice control, Google Assistant was unable to identify specific users by the sound of their voice.
Amazon is also able to set up multiple user accounts and is working to bring the ability to identify unique voices to its intelligent assistant, Alexa, according to an anonymous source cited by The Information, in late February.
In addition to moving beyond the home, multiple user support could also make smart speakers like Google Home more valuable in the workplace.
A personalized experience that combines unique voice signature with multi-user support would also directly attribute questions and answers within the My Activity area of the app, which shares the recorded audio clip and transcript of every question or exchange a user has with Google Assistant.
The multi-user function for Google Home is only available in the United States at launch, though Google plans to expand to the United Kingdom in the near future.

They need to understand that this new wave of “digital employees” will come with more advanced capabilities that can help marketers complete more complex tasks such as email automation or surveying customers about product experiences.
Conversations With Bots Will Be More Natural

Habib also predicts that, in the very near future, bots will even be able to feed an AI program a list of articles. The bot will be able to parse through them to find answers to any number of questions, not just the ones programmed in the logic. This can help bots provide more in-depth answers and insights that haven’t been addressed directly by script creators.
Moving beyond the this-or-that logic behind a lot of current bots, Alexey Aylarov , CEO and co-founder of Voximplant , also believes that technological advancements in AI interfaces will make bots more distinct in how they interact. Creating custom voices for text-to-speech (TTS) will become easier, according to Aylarov.

Bots Will Have More Compassion and Empathy
The pandemic has led many businesses to recognize how important it is to show compassion and empathy . That notion will extend beyond live employees and reach bots as well. Bots that can’t communicate in a way that sympathizes with a particular situation will become increasingly few and far between.
Cathy Gao , partner at Sapphire Ventures, explains: “Human empathy is critical, and chatbots and virtual agents will not only have to understand intent, but be able to express compassion—a tall order certainly, but the technology is quickly moving there.”
That technology, Aylarov says, may come in the form of more advanced emotion and sentiment analysis. Bots that interact with users through voice, for example, will be able to pick up on different tones and inclinations to understand how that person is talking to them. This technology can help bots get a better sense of whether a user may be sad or angry, and they can respond accordingly based on those emotions.
The bottom line: Bots that can empathize with customers on different pain points will provide a better overall conversational experience. For businesses, creating bot scripts that consider a wide array of customer issues and tones will need to be at the forefront of chatbot integration.
Hyper-Personalized Experiences Will Remain the Conversational Standard

These hyper-personalized experiences will be largely based on a bot’s ability to recall different interactions customers have had with it over time. It’s sort of like having the perfect employee that can remember and retain every bit of knowledge thrown their way.
One potential driver of more data retention for personalization will be an increase in survey bots . Creating a script that asks customers specific questions about product preferences will be key in being able to extract that information. Keeping things simple by offering customers questions with a 1–10 scale answer will make it low-lift on their side but also give your business important insight into how they feel about a certain aspect of your product and brand.
Janefalkar notes that conversational AI interfaces will have greater awareness and understanding of the nuances within customer intents, which will lead to more complex and sustained conversational interactions. It won’t simply be a yes-or-no or this-or-that experience. The bot will actually be able to make suggestions based on a customer’s past interactions and purchases like a trusted advisor.
