  1. Select the information to transfer.
In this example, John Appleseed is a macOS user account. If it has the same name as an account already on your new Mac, you’re prompted to either rename the old account or replace the one on your new Mac. If you rename, the old account will appear as a separate user on your new Mac, with a separate home folder and login. If you replace, the old account will delete and then replace the account on your new Mac, including everything in its home folder.
  2. Click Continue to start the transfer. Large transfers might need several hours to complete.
  3. After Migration Assistant is done, log in to the migrated account on your new Mac to see its files.

Once you’ve set up Boot Camp, you have three different ways to make the switch between partitions. Let’s look at these based on their starting points.

If you’re in Windows, you can switch to the macOS partition using the Boot Camp icon in the System Tray. Click the gray diamond-shaped icon and click "Restart in macOS" from the pop-up menu. Then, confirm your choice to reboot to macOS.

If you’re in macOS, you can switch to the Windows partition using the Startup Disk utility within System Preferences. In the Startup Disk, choose the "Windows on BOOTCAMP" partition, and click "Restart." Then, confirm your choice to reboot to Windows.

If the Mac was powered off, you can choose which partition to boot before the Mac selects for you. To do this, press the Option key on the Mac while it’s on the blank white boot screen. Within a couple of seconds, the Mac should present the two partitions to you on the screen. Use the arrow keys to select a partition, and press Enter to boot to it. This Option key feature is available either when booting from a powered-off state or if you’re rebooting from Windows.

In November 2020, Apple announced it would begin selling Macintosh computers with Apple’s own M1 chip, rather than using Intel’s processors. As of this writing, you can’t use Boot Camp to create a dual-boot M1 Mac, but software company Parallels released a version of its Desktop software that runs Windows 10 within MacOS. Unfortunately, regular versions of Windows won’t run on Apple’s new processor lines, and you have to use a version of Windows that runs on ARM-based processors like the M1. As a result, some Windows apps will not run on that version of the operating system.

How to transfer data from your old pc to your new mac

Moving your old data to a new computer can be a bit of a headache, especially if you’re going from PC to Mac. Thankfully, there are several ways to go about it, so you can get your new Mac set up and ready to go.

There are various ways to transfer data from your old PC to your new Mac. You could drag your files to an external hard drive and manually transfer them over, set up a networking share between the two systems, or sync them up using a cloud storage account. There’s also the Windows Migration Assistant, a special tool Apple created expressly for this purpose. Both computers will need to be on the same network to use this tool, but past that there aren’t any other hard requirements.

Here’s how to use the Windows Migration Assistant to transfer your files.

Step One: Get Your Windows Machine Ready

To start this process, begin on your Windows PC. Open up a browser of your choice. There’s an Apple page located on Apple’s official help database with links to the Windows Migration Assistant program for each of the various versions of macOS on your new Mac. You’ll install this application on your Windows machine.

Leave your PC available on the next screen, where a code will appear shortly. We’ll come back to this, don’t worry.

Step Two: Get Your Mac Ready

You’re done with your Windows machine for the moment, so turn on your Mac. Open the Mac Migration Assistant, found in the Utilities folder. It’s already pre-installed.

The next screen will show a passcode for the Mac where you’re migrating data. You will see your PC also showing the same code on its instance of the Migration Assistant. The screens will look identical while you have both machines running.

How to transfer data from your old pc to your new mac

Make sure the two computers display the same code. Next, click “Continue” on your PC first and then do the same on your Mac.

You’ll be focusing on your Mac for the rest of the process.

Step Three: Choose What Data to Transfer

When you press “Continue,” the Migration Assistant on your Mac will scan for a list of files that you can migrate to your new computer. Once it finishes, it will show you all the files it found, separated by user. Select the data you want to move over and then click “Continue.”

After you do this, the process will begin, and you’ll be shown an ETA until it’s finished. The transfer can take a while to complete, depending on how much data you’re transferring, and the Assistant will notify you when it’s finished.

Congratulations! You’re now able to start using your fresh new Mac.

How to transfer data from your old pc to your new mac

Welcome to the fold. You’re anxious to use your Mac, but you’ve amassed years of data on that PC. Switching platforms doesn’t mean starting over: You can still use those old files. Apple makes it easy with a free utility called Windows Migration Assistant. Here’s how to transfer data from PC to Mac using the Windows Migration Assistant from Apple.

What is Migration Assistant, and how do I get it?

Migration Assistant is a utility Apple includes in the Utilities folder of every Mac. You’ll see it when you first start up your Mac when your Mac asks you if you want to transfer data over from another Mac, a Time Machine backup, or a PC. Apple makes the app freely available for download for transferring to your Mac. You’ll need specific software, depending on what macOS or OS X operating system you’re transferring to. You’ll need to download the Migration Assistant software to your PC before you begin. Below are the following software links, depending on the Mac operating system to which you’re migrating.

Migration Assistant will help you transfer files from a PC running Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 operating systems. The Mac and the PC both have to be running Migration Assistant.

Both should be on the same network in order to find each other. The data migration may take several hours depending on what’s being transferred and what means are used: Wi-Fi is slower, a wired Ethernet connection is faster. But one way or the other, your patience will be rewarded.

What actual data gets transferred will depend on which version of Windows you’re using and what programs created your data. Bookmarks from Internet Explorer and Firefox will be brought into Safari, for example. iTunes content and image files should make it over as well. System settings will get pulled over. You’ll be able to specify what other files you’d like to bring over, too.

Email, contacts, and calendar information are where it gets a bit tricky. The bottom line is that Migration Assistant will pull over your email account information, and if you’re using Microsoft Outlook, it should pull over your email messages, your contacts, and your calendars. Other programs may vary. Apple has posted a detailed chart of what gets migrated over to help you understand.

Even though you’re transferring all your Windows data to your Mac, it doesn’t mean you should only have the data on your computer. We highly suggest that people know how to back up their Macs and that they do so often. Plus, we also suggest that you invest in one of the best external hard drives for Mac, so you can have an extra copy of any of your important documents and files. Be data smart, y’all!

What you need before you transfer data from PC to Mac

Before you get too excited and try to start transferring your PC’s data to your new Mac, you’ll need to have a couple of things at the ready.

  • You must have the administrative username and password associated with the PC.
  • Both computers must be on the same network, either through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • You should perform a drive performance check before running Migration Assistant, or you may not be able to use the software properly.
  1. Click on Start on your PC.
  2. Click on Run.
  3. type cmd into the Run window.
  4. Press Enter.
  5. type chkdsk into the Command window.
  6. Press Enter.

If your drive performance check uncovers issues, you’ll need to run a drive repair process.

  1. Type chkdsk drive: /F (Change the name “drive” to whatever the name of your Windows startup disk is) into the Command window.
  2. Press Enter.
  3. Press Y when prompted.
  4. Restart your PC.

You will need to repeat the steps above until the drive performance check returns without any issues. You can then use Migration Assistant to move your data to your Mac.

Here’s how to transfer data from PC to Mac

First, connect your Mac to your PC either through Ethernet or by making sure both computers are on the same local Wi-Fi network.

On your new Mac:

  1. Launch a Finder window.
  2. Click on Applications in the sidebar.
  3. Double-click or control-click on the Utilities folder.
  4. Click on Migration Assistant.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Click From a PC. when prompted to select how you want to transfer your information.

Click Continue.

There are several ways to transfer your files from your old computer to your new one. You can back up your files to the cloud or a hard drive, or you can use a few different applications. You can even transfer files from a PC to a new Mac. Learn how to move files from one computer to another and what to do with your old computer once you’re finished.

Congratulations! You have a new Windows PC or Mac. But all your files are on your old computer. This tutorial explains how to fix that.

There are several ways to transfer your files.
You could copy all your files onto an intermediate drive and then onto your new computer.
You could back up your old PC and restore the files to a new PC using Windows 10’s File History feature, which is in Settings. Go to the Update & Security section, then to Backup.
To do so from an old Mac to a new Mac, you could use the Migration Assistant tool in the Utilities folder to restore your old Mac’s Time Machine backup to your new Mac.

Another option is to use a migration tool. Laplink’s $60 PCmover Professional for Windows can transfer files and some settings from one Windows PC to another. PCmover is for Windows PCs only; there is no migration tool to go from a Mac to a Windows PC.

If you have a new Mac, its built-in Migration Assistant can transfer files and some settings from your old computer. Migration Assistant can migrate from one Mac to another as well as from a Windows PC to a Mac.

But the easiest way to transfer files is to use the cloud. You can use the cloud to move files across Windows PCs, across Macs, or across a combination of the two.

Be sure that both computers have the same cloud storage service installed — you can use Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, or Box, for example. And make sure that you have enough storage available for all your files. Then sign into the cloud service on both computers.
Now, move your files to the cloud on the old computer. You should have a virtual drive on the computer for your cloud service. Just move your folders and files to it. Your data will begin to upload to the cloud over your internet connection.

Here’s a tip if you use Windows: You can set OneDrive to automatically sync everything on your desktop and in the Documents folder — where most people keep their files — to the cloud. To do so, go to Settings in OneDrive, open the Backup pane, click the Manage Backup button, select whatever you want synced, and the click Start Backup.

And here’s a tip if you use macOS: You can set iCloud Drive to automatically sync everything on your desktop and in the Documents folder — again, where most people keep their files — to the cloud. Open iCloud preferences, click the Options button next to iCloud Drive, and check the Desktop & Documents Folders option in the Documents tab.

Once you’ve moved your files to the cloud storage, they’ll start to sync to your new computer. Just be patient!
Use the synchronization time to install your apps on the new computer from the Microsoft store or the Apple Mac App store, from the vendor websites, or from your installation discs. Be sure to sign out of your apps on the old computer first.

If you use iCloud, Office 365 or Microsoft 365, or G Suite or Google Workspace, your contacts and emails should already be stored in the cloud. That means they’ll sync to your new computer after you sign in.
Likewise, if you’ve enabled syncing in your favorite browser, your bookmarks will sync to the new computer as well.

If you plan on using both computers moving forward, you’re done. But if you want to retire or sell the old one, you’re not quite finished. You must sign out of the cloud storage service on that old computer, so files from your new one aren’t synced to it. This also prevents any files that you delete on the old computer from being deleted on the new computer, which is what the cloud service will do if still enabled on the old computer.

Once you’ve broken the cloud connection between the old and new computer, you can the sign out of all other accounts you may have, from iTunes to Amazon, so no one can access them if they get ahold of your old computer. Then, if it’s a work computer, hand it over to IT. If it’s your own, finish the security job: Wipe out the old computer’s drive before recycling it, giving it away, or selling it.
Enjoy that new computer!
