We show you how to turn off automatic updates for the Microsoft Store to prevent performance or network issues.

The Windows Store’s ability to update apps automatically can be a very useful tool, but it can also be a nuisance. Often, users will notice that the service host network service is taking up a lot of their bandwidth and slowing things down. Other times, users want to turn off automatic updates because they prefer a certain version of an app.

Today we’re going to show you how to turn off automatic updates for the Microsoft Store, but it’s worth noting that this won’t prevent it from installing unwanted apps. We’re also not going to cover fixing the Store if it isn’t working or how to uninstall it entirely. For those, you can check their respective links.

Though it is possible to set upload and download limits for the Store, this still isn’t an ideal for those with slow connections. Automatic app downloads and installation can also use system resources, resulting in high CPU utilization and I/O and fears of a svchost virus. In reality, installing and updating apps just takes an unavoidable chunk of system resources, which can be a problem when you’re gaming. You can follow the steps below to remove this annoying default Windows 10 behavior:

How to Stop Automatic Updates via the Microsoft Store

The simplest way to stop apps from updating automatically is via the Microsoft Store itself. This is a quick process, but only works for that user and can reset after a feature update.

    Open the Microsoft Store

Press the “Start” button or click the search bar on your taskbar and type “Microsoft Store”.

In the Microsoft Store, press the three dots in the top-right corner and click “Settings”.

Toggle the “Update apps automatically” option, which can be found under the “App updates” heading.

How to Turn Off Automatic Microsoft Store Updates via Group Policy

Users on Windows 10 Pro or higher will have access to the Group Policy Editor, a handy tool for changing the OS’ default behavior which is often more permanent. You can stop automatic updates via this method for all users on the PC.

Open the Group Policy Editor (GPO)

Press the “Start” button or click the Windows search bar and type “Group Policy”. Click the first result.

You can find this in Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Store . Double-click it to open the editing menu.

Click the “Enabled” option to stop auto download of app updates, or “Disabled” to let the Microsoft Store update apps automatically. “Not Configured” will have the policy follow the existing system settings.

How to Stop Automatic Store Updates on Windows 10 Home with Regedit

Users on Windows 10 Home won’t have access to the Group Policy editor, which makes it a bit more challenging to turn off automatic updates for all users. Thankfully, you can perform the same policy switch via the registry, but you should ideally read our safe registry editing guide first.

    Open the Registry Editor

Press “Windows + R” to open the Run dialog, type “regedit”, and press “OK”.

You’ll find the Microsoft Store key in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore . Right-click the empty space in the main pane and choose “New > DWORD (32-bit) Value”.

Set the “Value name” to “AutoDownload”. To disable automatic app download, set the “Value data” to “2”. To force the Microsoft Store to update apps automatically no matter what, set it to “4”. When you’re done, press “OK” and close the Registry Editor.

Windows 10 has an official app store; the Microsoft Store and while it still isn’t as big as the Mac App Store, it’s still a source for most apps from Microsoft and the Netflix app. Most stock apps update when there’s a major Windows 10 update however, smaller updates are occasionally released via the Microsoft Store.

If you do download apps from the Microsoft Store, you also update them from there. You can choose to update apps automatically or manually. Here’s how you can enable or disable auto updates in the Microsoft Store.

Auto Updates In The Microsoft Store

Open the Microsoft Store app and click the more options button at the top right. From the menu, select Settings.

How to turn off automatic app updates from the microsoft store in windows 10

On the Settings screen, you will see a switch labelled App Updates. Turn it on and the Microsoft Store will automatically download any app updates when they are available. If you prefer to manually update apps, you can turn this switch off.

If you have your WiFi network set as a metered connection to avoid Windows 10 updates being downloaded in the background, it will also impact the Microsoft Store app. Even if you have auto updates enabled, the metered connection status of your connection will prevent apps from updating.

We should mention that this is the Microsoft Store app and it’s not as reliable as other app store apps that you might find on other platforms. You may enable auto updates in the Microsoft Store but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will work. You might have to run the app, and still click the Update All button.

On a good day, the apps might update on their own. Ideally, once you have auto updates turned on, the app will search for new updates and install them. For app updates, you won’t need to restart your system, and you can continue using the app. This is what happens if everything is working the way it should.

If there’s something wrong with the Microsoft Store app, or the background services that need to run in order for it to check for and automatically install new updates, you will get mixed results. In some cases, the app will check for new updates but it won’t install them. In other cases, it won’t do anything. You will need to launch the app and that’s when it will check for updates. Once it detects updates are available, it may or may not install them. You can wait a while to see if the updates install, and if they don’t, you will have to install them manually.

The Microsoft Store is the most trusted place for Windows 11/10 users to obtain copies of applications and games. Not only does the Microsoft Store feature hundreds of applications, but it also has loads of features, some of which we need and others that we can do without.

You can set the Microsoft Store to automatically download new versions of your applications whenever there are any. This is an excellent feature but can also tell on your data bandwidth usage and battery, as with any process that runs in the background.

If you’d prefer to update your applications by yourself, you have to turn off the automatic update feature. This guide will show you how to disable or enable automatic updates in the Microsoft Store. We’ll also teach you how to update the applications manually if you have them disabled.

Well, we know that Windows 10 Apps is Microsoft Store updates automatically. This feature is useful when a user doesn’t have time to check updates. At the same time is also somewhat frustrating when a new version comes with lots of bugs. Users also want to stop installing the latest updated version of the app as it eats up a big part of internet data. Many users are habitual to use the installed version of the app so won’t update to a new one. Windows 10 users mainly download apps from the two sources, one is from the Microsoft Store and the next one is from the software’s official site. From Microsoft Store, you can easily download and update the apps for Windows 10. But if we talk about Windows 8 and other Windows versions such as Windows 7 SP3 or Windows XP then at that time users were only able to download the apps and software from their official website. Microsoft introduced the Microsoft Store beta in Windows 8 and now is used widely in Windows 10. Users prefer both the platforms to download the apps.

How to turn off automatic app updates from the microsoft store in windows 10

As originally released, the option to disable automatic app updates in Windows 10 Home was, for whatever reason, grayed out. But as of the newly released Windows 10 Cumulative Update 5, WInSuperSite notes, you can now toggle this setting and install updates manually.

Cumulative Update 5 (KB3081448) is one of three updates Microsoft released on Thursday: The other two address specific issues involving Windows 10’s “ out-of-box experience ” and the Windows 10 upgrading process .

As for Windows 10 Cumulative Update 5, we don’t yet really know what else is new because Microsoft won’t say—the release notes simply state that it “includes improvements to enhance the functionality of Windows 10.” OK then.

If you don’t yet have Cumulative Update 5, go take a quick peek at Windows Update (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) to make sure you’ve got the latest Windows patches.

Once you’ve got Cumulative Update 5 installed, open the Store app, click the Profile button in the toolbar (the abstract figure of a person’s head and shoulders located to the left of the search box), then select Settings from the menu appears. From there, you should be able to toggle the switch for automatic app updates. You’ll still probably want to install app updates as soon as possible after they come out, of course.

WinSuperSite’s Richard Hay speculates that the grayed-out option to disable automatic app updates was the result of a bug as opposed to an intentional limitation on Microsoft’s part. But Hay also suggests that if the grayed-out toggle was intentional, Microsoft’s reversal is a good sign.

“If this change was made due to the feedback Microsoft received about it,” Hay writes, “then that is encouraging and hopefully spills over into some other areas like detailed cumulative updates.” Here’s hoping.

This opens the Only display the private store within the Microsoft Store app policy settings.

On the Only display the private store within the Microsoft Store app setting page, click Enabled, and then click OK.

how to stop the auto-update function for apps in Windows 10, if you don’t want the latest versions of apps for any reason.

Most of the time, automatic app updates are convenient. Not having to check for new versions regularly saves you time and keeps your apps secure.

However, sometimes you might want to stop apps from auto-updating. Maybe the latest version is bugged, or you need an older version for a specific reason. We’ll show you how to stop the auto-update feature in apps on Windows 10, where possible.

How to Stop Auto-Update of Store Apps in Windows 10

While it’s probably not your main source for downloading software, the Microsoft Store is home to lots of apps. Check out the differences between desktop and Store apps if you’re not familiar.

Since the Microsoft Store provides a centralized place for downloading apps, turning off auto-update for it is simple. Type Microsoft Store into the Start Menu to launch it. Once it’s open, click the three-dot Menu button at the top-right and choose Settings.

On the Settings page, disable the Update apps automatically slider. That’s all you have to do—now Store apps won’t update in the background.

To update apps manually in the future, open the Menu again, and select Downloads and updates. There, you’ll see any pending updates and can install them one-by-one or all at once with the Update all link.

How to Stop Auto-Update in Windows Desktop Apps

While the process for Store apps is pretty simple, you might want to disable auto-updates for traditional desktop software too. Unfortunately, this isn’t consistent across programs, so you’ll have to do a bit of digging for your particular app.

Some desktop apps have a toggle to disable automatic updates in their Settings panel. For example, Visual Studio Code has a checkbox to disable background updates in its Settings, plus a dropdown box to choose how it delivers updates.

Unfortunately, many apps (such as Dropbox, Spotify, and Slack) don’t have an easy toggle to disable updates. Because they receive updates regularly, their apps check for and install new versions when you launch the app.

In some cases, you can block the apps from updating by changing the permissions in their app data folders or through Command Prompt commands, but we wouldn’t recommend this unless you absolutely have to. These are hacky workarounds that could stop working in the future, and it’s safer to install the new versions anyway.

If you must disable auto-update for an app like this, searching Google for specific instructions for that app is your best bet, since it varies so much.

If you really want to block updates for a particular program, you can use Windows Firewall to prevent it from getting online. However, this is only suitable for apps that don’t require network access to function. Follow the first method in our guide to blocking Internet Explorer from accessing the internet for help with this.

How to Turn Off Automatic Windows Updates

As you probably know, Windows 10 automatically updates itself all the time. If you want to prevent this, we’ve shown some ways to turn off Windows update.

Most of them are temporary; if you do have to turn off Windows Update, you should turn it back on again before long to make sure you have the latest security updates. This will help if you don’t want your system to restart from updates or need to keep a buggy update away for a bit, though.

If You’re Having Problems With an App

Chances are that if you’re looking to disable automatic updates, you probably have an issue with the latest version of the app. If that’s the case, you may be able to fix the issue without disabling updates.

First, reboot your PC if you haven’t already. This simple step can help clear up issues, even if only one app is having a problem.

After that, try fully uninstalling and reinstalling the program. This could clear up any corrupted files that are causing it to crash or perform poorly. You should also try temporarily disabling your antivirus software, which can interfere with proper app performance.

It’s also worth running a Windows system file checker (SFC) scan to look for any OS file issues. To do so, right-click on the Start button (or press Win + X) and click Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin) from the list. Then enter this command:

This will take some time but if it finds problems SFC will attempt to fix them automatically.

In case you’re having problems with a Store app, see our Windows 10 Store app troubleshooting guide. Otherwise, consider trying some free Windows tools that help fix issues.

Keep Your Software Up-to-Date

Keep in mind that we’ve shown you how to stop programs from updating for troubleshooting purposes. In most cases, you should let apps update automatically, as this protects your system. Running outdated copies of software exposes you to security holes in previous versions.

Thus, after you’re done turning off automatic updates for troubleshooting purposes, make sure you know how to update everything on your Windows 10 PC.

The command prompt is still a powerful Windows tool. Here are the most useful CMD commands every Windows user needs to know.
