How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

The HomePod smart speaker can add a lot of value to your life, from playing ambient sounds to creating sleep playlists. At its October 2020 event, Apple unveiled the HomePod Mini and a new feature called intercom that will also be available on the older HomePod. This lets you communicate with the different areas of your home through Siri’s voice commands. For instance, you can let everyone know that dinner is ready or remind your child to go to bed, etc. Let’s dig deeper and learn how to use Intercom on HomePods.

Note: Currently, the intercom feature only works if you have more than one HomePod/HomePod Mini speaker. Also, you must be using the latest version of iOS 14.2 or iPadOS 14.2, and your HomePod speakers must be updated with the latest software.

How to Turn ON Intercom on HomePods

  1. Open the Homeapp on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap and hold the HomePod tile, then select Settings.
  3. Select Intercom.
  4. Toggle ON for each HomePod speaker. How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

If you wish to disable the intercom feature just turn off the switch next to each HomePod speaker.

How to Use Intercom on HomePod

To Send an Intercom Message

You can send messages to all the HomePod speakers in your home or choose a specific zone or room to relay it to. It’s super simple to do using Hey Siri.

For example, you can say:

“Hey Siri, intercom, dinner is ready.”

“Hey Siri, ask everyone, ready to leave?”

To send a message to a specific room, say something like:

“Hey Siri, announce to the kitchen, I’m caught up with homework. I’ll eat later..”

“Hey Siri, ask downstairs, what movie are we watching tonight?’”

To Reply to an Intercom Message

Once you hear an intercom message on a HomePod, you can reply back in a similar way using “Hey Siri,” too. If the message was just for the zone/room you’re in, your response will only be relayed to the sender speaker. Similarly, If the message was for the whole home, the reply will be sent to all the speakers.

To reply, say something like:

“Hey Siri, reply, coming down in five.”

“Hey Siri, reply just grabbing my jacket.’”

However, you can also choose to send your reply only to specific HomePod speakers by simply instructing Siri. For instance:

“Hey Siri, reply upstairs, we’re watching the latest Netflix release.”

“Hey Siri, reply to the living room ‘I’m not in the mood for a movie today. I’m going to bed.’”

Use Intercom with AirPods, Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad

What makes the intercom feature even better is that you’ll be able to send messages to HomePods from your Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, and even CarPlay. You’ll also be able to receive messages on AirPods, which creates a seamless ecosystem.

Of course, you’ll also be able to select which devices Intercom messages are delivered to and when intercom notifications are sent to your device. So, for example, you will be able to turn off Intercom notifications on your iPhone when you’re busy at work.

These handy features are expected to become available soon as shared by Apple Event.

Set up Intercom

To use Intercom, update your HomePod or HomePod mini speakers to the latest software. Then check that every device that you want to send and receive Intercom messages from—your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch—is up to date. After you update, Intercom will be turned on automatically.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

Manage your settings

To choose when your device receives Intercom notifications, select which members of your Home have access to Intercom, and choose which HomePod speakers use Intercom:

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Tap Home > Home Settings.
  3. Tap Intercom. Choose your Intercom settings.
  4. Tap Back, then tap Done.

Send an Intercom message

You can ask Siri or use the Home app to send an Intercom message. You can even send and receive Intercom messages with your AirPods or compatible Beats headphones that are connected to an iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS device. The message will be sent to every HomePod speaker in the Home and every device with Intercom notifications turned on.

Ask Siri

  • “Hey Siri, intercom ‘It’s time to wake up.'”
  • “Hey Siri, ask everyone ‘Has the dog been fed?'”

To send a message to a HomePod in a specific room or zone, say something like:

  • “Hey Siri, announce upstairs ‘The movie is starting.'”
  • “Hey Siri, ask the kitchen ‘What’s for breakfast?'”

Use the Home app

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. In the Home tab, tap in the upper-right corner of the screen.
  3. Say your Intercom message. Try something like, “Tell everyone that our neighbors are coming over.” To send a message to a HomePod in a specific room or zone, say something like, “Ask downstairs ‘Has anyone seen my keys?'”
  4. When you’re done recording, tap Done .

Reply to an Intercom message

After your HomePod or device receives an Intercom message, you can reply back. If the message was shared with the whole Home, your reply is sent back to every HomePod and device in your Home with notifications turned on. If the message was sent to your specific room, your reply is sent only to the HomePod or device that sent the original message.

You can reply with something like:

  • “Hey Siri, reply ‘I’ll be right there.'”
  • “Hey Siri, reply ‘I fed the dog this morning.'”

If you want your reply sent only to certain HomePod speakers, you can name them in your reply. Try something like:

  • “Hey Siri, reply to the living room ‘Which movie are you watching?'”
  • “Hey Siri, reply downstairs ‘I’ll be there in 5 minutes.'”

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

Announced during its “Hi, Speed” event, Apple showed off a new feature for iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, HomePod, and HomePod mini called Intercom that allows you to easily communicate with your family. Here is how to set it up and how to use it.

Get started

To use Intercom, you first must have your devices up to date. Intercom requires iOS 14.1, and the new HomePod 14.1 update, or newer.

Once you are up to date, you can launch the Home app. Intercom lives in the Home app and is where it is both set up and configured for your devices.

Upon launching the app post-update you should see a new alert announcing that Intercom is available. That is how you enable Intercom.

How to set up Intercom

  • On the Intercom alert in the Home app, tap Continue
  • Then choose when you’d like to receive Intercom notifications on your iPhone
  • Then choose who should be able to send Intercom messages to your home. These are users who you’ve added to your Home app.
  • Tap Continue and you’re done

Once Intercom is turned on, you should see a new waveform icon in the top right corner of the Home app. The + button that was there before has been relocated to the left side of the screen.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

If you tap on the Intercom icon, a modal box appears that lets you speak your message to be broadcast. Once you are finished with your message, tap the stop button to end. The Home app should confirm your message was successfully sent to your home.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

For HomePod users, you can go into your HomePod settings where you can toggle Intercom on or off for that device, as well as choose when it should receive notifications such as when you’re home, never, or anytime.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

For global Intercom settings, head to the Home app icon in the top-left corner and choose Home Settings. Intercom is now listed among the different accessory types like doors, sensors, and blinds.

Here you can turn the feature on or off in its entirety, toggle individual HomePods, and choose your phone’s Intercom preferences.

How to use Intercom

You can easily send messages right from the Home app, but it is by far the most convenient place.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

Intercom broadcasts can be sent at any time using Siri. Just say “Hey Siri, Intercom” and then speak your message. By default, the message will go to the whole home but you can also specificity a room if you have multiple locations. For example, “Hey Siri, Intercom kitchen. Can the kids come to the backyard to help cover the furniture?”

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

Since Siri is on multiple devices, Intercom works across multiple devices. You are able to use your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, HomePod, HomePod mini, or even CarPlay to send messages. Now when you pull in the driveway you can send an Intercom announcement to the whole home to come help carry in the groceries.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

When an Intercom message is sent, Siri doesn’t read the text but instead, it is your voice that comes through the other end.

A great new feature

Intercom is a great use of all your Apple devices and it is dead-simple to set up. Thanks to the new HomePod mini’s low price point, smart Apple speakers will be in more rooms throughout homes.

Can I send an intercom message to everyone in the family group? Even if they’re in other locations? So if I send an intercom will everyone in the family group receive them even if they’re not at home?

Where are you getting the Beta OS update for HomePods?

peterhart

Why do you have to say “ Hey Siri, Intercom. ” when the presentation didn’t note this? The actor in the video said “Hey Siri, tell everyone. ”

Would be great if Homepods could relay doorbell rings and garage door openings for those times you’re at home and don’t have your IPhone with you or your Apple Watch on, perhaps with Intercom announcing “Someone is ringing the front doorbell” (“Would you like to respond?”) or “Someone just opened the garage door”, .

Or for when I’m out and about and trying to get hold of my wife who’s taking a nap or long bath or watching TV, with her phone on a different floor. Happens often. Say in the second or third text or call attempt (user selectable) Intercom kicks in “Hubby is trying to contact wifey, would you like to respond?”

You are so spot on with this particular comment.
I’ll send a text inquiring if she read the text I just sent her.

Alongside the HomePod mini, Apple introduced a new Intercom feature that’s designed to let Apple device owners communicate with one another throughout the home, sending messages to specific rooms, areas, or people.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom
Intercom works with the HomePod, ‌HomePod mini‌, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and even CarPlay, so you can dictate a voice message on any of your devices that you can have delivered to a single person in the family or all family members. Intercom is primarily designed as a feature for the ‌HomePod‌ and ‌HomePod mini‌.

We have a demo and walkthrough video on the new feature:

How to Set Up Intercom

After updating to ‌HomePod‌ software 14.2 and iOS 14.2, Intercom can be set up in the Home app. Intercom works if you have a ‌HomePod‌ or another compatible device, and there is no dedicated interface on the ‌iPhone‌ for using Intercom outside of the Home app.

  1. Install HomePod 14.2 software.
  2. Open up the Home app.
  3. Tap on the little house icon in the upper left corner. How to use an apple homepod as an intercom
  4. Tap on “Home Settings.”
  5. Scroll down to “Intercom” and tap it. How to use an apple homepod as an intercom
  6. Adjust your notification settings and select the people in the home who are able to use the Intercom feature.

Those who have remote access to your Home app can send or receive Intercom messages even when away from home, with those messages displaying as audio notifications on ‌iPhone‌ and Apple Watch.

Note that anyone who wants to be able to use Intercom will need to be added as a person with access to the home. This can be done by entering the Home Settings screen and tapping on “Invite People.”

Intercom Requirements

Using the Intercom feature on ‌HomePod‌, iOS devices, ‌CarPlay‌, and ‌AirPods‌ requires the HomePod 14.2 software update or later and iOS and iPadOS 14.2 or later. On Apple Watch, it appears to work with watchOS 7.1 and later.

How to Use Intercom to Send a Message to a HomePod

Intercom messages can be sent to the HomePods throughout a home using Siri on ‌iPhone‌, ‌iPad‌, Apple Watch, another ‌HomePod‌, and more. To send an Intercom message, just activate ‌Siri‌ on your ‌iPhone‌, ‌iPad‌, Apple Watch, ‌CarPlay‌, or ‌AirPods‌ and then say “Intercom” and your message.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom
So if you wanted to tell everyone that dinner is ready, just say “Intercom, dinner is ready” and the message “Dinner is ready” will be relayed to all of the HomePods in the Home.

Other commands like “Hey ‌Siri‌, tell everyone dinner is ready” also work as an alternative phrase for communicating through Intercom.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom
In the Home app on ‌iPhone‌ and ‌iPad‌, there’s also an option to tap on the small waveform in the upper right corner to record a message that’s then sent to Intercom devices in the home.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

How to Use Intercom to Send a Message From a HomePod to Another Device

You can use the ‌HomePod‌ to send a message to other HomePods in the home or to the devices that belong to members of the family.

It’s as simple as activating ‌Siri‌, saying “Intercom” and then the message, with the message able to be sent to every person in the family regardless of who’s at home. It will play on ‌HomePod‌ speakers in the house as well as on individual iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches.

How to Send a Message to a Specific Room

If you have HomePods in separate rooms, you can direct a message to that room by activating ‌Siri‌ and then saying “Intercom [room name] [message].”

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom
So for example if you wanted to tell everyone in the living room that dinner is ready, you would say “Hey ‌Siri‌, intercom living room dinner is ready.”

Note that to use the room command, HomePods need to be correctly assigned to a room in the Home app. Assigning or changing a room can be done by following these steps:

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Select the ‌HomePod‌ or ‌HomePod mini‌ from the device list.
  3. Long press on the ‌HomePod‌ icon. How to use an apple homepod as an intercom
  4. Tap on the gear icon at the bottom of the interface that pops up or scroll down forcefully.
  5. Tap on “Room.” How to use an apple homepod as an intercom
  6. Select a room from the list of available rooms or tap “Create New.”
  7. When done, close the interface by tapping the “X” at the top of the window.

How to Reply to an Intercom Message

If you receive an Intercom message in one room of the house and want to send a message back, you can activate ‌Siri‌ and then say “reply” along with your message.

So if you received an Intercom message that said “Dinner’s ready,” you can say “Hey ‌Siri‌ reply I’m on my way” to send a message right back.

Devices Compatible With Intercom

You can use iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and ‌AirPods‌ to send Intercom messages to the members of your household, and you can even send messages through ‌CarPlay‌ if you’re driving.

Note that if your devices are using different languages, such as Spanish for the ‌HomePod‌ and English for the ‌iPhone‌, Intercom may not function properly.

Siri lets you use your HomePod or HomePod mini to send messages to others in your household, provided they’re within earshot of a smart speaker. This feature is called Intercom, and you can use it from any device that supports Apple’s voice assistant.

Although the Intercom feature is primarily designed for use in the home, it also works with the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple Watch, and CarPlay.

What Is Intercom?

Intercom allows you to send prerecorded voice messages to Apple devices, much like the short voice clips Apple has built into its Messages app. The feature is primarily designed for use with the HomePod and HomePod mini smart speakers, allowing you to send a message to every speaker in your house simultaneously.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

You can also send messages to certain rooms, provided you’ve set up your smart speakers to reflect your home layout. If you have an iPhone, iPad, and/or Apple Watch, you can opt to receive Intercom messages on your devices, too.

Intercom is meant to be used in the home, although devices like the iPhone can receive messages sent to your household even when you’re out. You can opt not to receive these messages on your personal device at all, or to only receive them when you’re home.

To use Intercom, you have to turn it on under the Home app. Fortunately, not everyone has to be included under a Family Sharing plan. You can also authorize non-family Apple accounts to send Intercom messages within your home, which is ideal for shared homes or student housing.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

When you send an Intercom message, the recording is played back on any target devices. There is no Siri speech-to-text, so make sure you speak loudly and clearly.

How to Use Intercom with HomePod and More

To use Intercom, you must first enable it on your HomePod and any personal devices on which you want to receive messages. To do this, launch the Home app, and then tap “Home” at the top left. In the menu that appears, tap Home Settings > Intercom.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

You can then choose whether to receive notifications on devices (non-HomePods) in the “Receive Notifications When” section. Make sure you enable any HomePod speakers listed at the bottom of the menu, along with anyone in your home you want to have access to the Intercom feature. If you want to exclude a particular HomePod, just toggle it off.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

After Intercom is enabled on any speakers you own, it’s time to test it out from your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or CarPlay-connected motor.

You can use Intercom in the following ways:

  • “Hey, Siri. Intercom I’ll be home late.”
  • “Hey, Siri, tell everyone I’ll be home late.”
  • “Hey, Siri. Intercom living room, has the game started?”

However you invoke the feature, it will always play whatever your microphone picks up after “intercom” or “tell everyone.”

Info: To use Intercom, you must have iOS 14.2 or later on the device (your iPhone or iPad) from which you’re sending the message. If your HomePod or Apple device isn’t up to date, you might encounter an error telling you to turn on the feature, even if you already have.

If you encounter an error when trying to send a message, update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS, and then relaunch the Home app. Tap and hold the HomePod icon, and then scroll down and tap the Settings cog. Run any software updates that are listed as outstanding; if you don’t see any, your HomePod is up-to-date.

Let Others Use Intercom by Adding Them to Home

You can allow others to use Intercom by adding them to your Home app, and then enabling the Intercom feature. However, anyone you add will need an iPhone or iPad to really make use of this feature.

To do this, launch the Home app, and then tap “Home” at the top left. In the menu that appears, tap “Home Settings.”

In the “People” section, tap “Invite People,” and then start typing the name, email address, or phone number of the person you want to add. Tap “Send Invite” and that person will receive a request on their device. After they accept, they’ll appear under the “People” section.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

Under “Home Settings,” tap “Intercom” to enable this feature next to the person you just added. They’ll now be able to use the same commands to send recorded messages throughout your home.

To can also limit intercom messages to a specific room or zone in your home. Zones are a collection of rooms (for example, a floor) that you can set up in the Home app. You must have a HomePod or HomePod mini in the room or zone.

Sample commands include:

  • “Hey Siri, announce the second floor ‘The movie is starting.’”
  • “Hey Siri, ask the kitchen ‘What’s for breakfast?’”

Through the Home app

To use the Apple intercom feature through the Home app:

Replying to Intercom Messages

Once you receive an intercom message, of course, you can reply. If the original message went out to your entire home, the reply would go to every HomePod and device in your Home with notifications turned on. If instead, the message was sent to a room or zone, the reply is sent only to the HomePod or device that sent the original message.

For example, you can reply to a message by saying:

  • “Hey Siri, reply ‘I’m not interested in watching the movie.’”
  • “Hey Siri, reply ‘Cereal is for breakfast.’”

If you want your reply sent only to certain HomePod speakers, you can name them in your reply. Try something like:

  • “Hey Siri, reply to the kitchen ‘Which movie are you watching?’”
  • “Hey Siri, reply upstairs ‘I’ll be there in 5 minutes.’”

Additional Settings

To customize the Apple intercom experience, you can turn off or limit notifications and disable the intercom.

Adjusting Notifications

Without making changes, all your home members receive intercom notifications on their devices while they’re inside the home. To change the settings:

  1. Tap the Home app on your device.
  2. Choose Home Settings.
  3. Select Intercom.
  4. Do any of the following:
    • Turn off notifications: Tap Never.
    • Get notifications only while you’re at home: Tap When I’m Home.
    • Always get notifications: Tap Anywhere.

Disabling Intercom

You can disable the Apple intercom for some or all of your HomePod speakers or different members of your home. To do so:

  1. Tap the Home app on your device.
  2. Choose Home Settings.
  3. Select Intercom.
  4. Do either of the following:
    • Disable Intercom for a HomePod: Under HomePod, turn off a HomePod.
    • Disable Intercom for a member of your home: Under People, turn off the member of your home who should not send or receive Intercom messages on their iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS devices.

You can turn the intercom back on at any time by reversing the steps.

The Apple intercom feature works best in larger homes where there is more than one HomePod speaker. Regardless, it’s a great tool with a simple set-up. Best of all, you probably have all the necessary tools already in your home.

Use a HomePod or HomePod Mini to broadcast a message to everyone in your home.

How to use an apple homepod as an intercom

HomePod Mini is Apple’s affordable smart speaker for almost everyone.

One of the only features my family and I consistently used on the various Amazon Echo or Google Home speakers we had around our home was the ability to broadcast a message to everyone in the house. Until recently, it was a feature that Apple’s HomePod was lacking. But with the launch of iOS 14 and the release of the more affordable HomePod Mini , Apple added an Intercom feature .

As the name implies, you can use your HomePods to send voice messages to everyone in your home, or to specific rooms, using Siri. But Apple took the feature one step further by allowing you to send and receive the same messages from an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. Heck, you can even use CarPlay to send and receive intercom messages.

Everything Apple

Before you can use the intercom feature, make sure all of your Apple devices — iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, HomePod, HomePod Mini and Apple Watch are running the latest version of their respective software. Below we’ll walk you through how to use your HomePod as an intercom and where to find all of its settings.

Take a few minutes to make sure Intercom is set up the way you want.

Adjust your Intercom settings before getting started

Before you start using Intercom, it’s a good idea to take a look at the settings.

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Home app, tap the Home icon in the top-left corner, and select Home Settings > Intercom where you’re presented with three different settings:

  • Choose whether you want to receive Intercom messages on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch only when you’re home, or regardless of where you are. Alternatively, you can opt to not receive them at all.
  • Select which members of your home can use Intercom’s remote access feature. You’ll need to invite someone to share your home before they show up in this section. You can do that by opening the Home app and going to Home Settings >Invite People to give them access to all of the HomeKit devices you have set up.
  • Finally, you can enable or disable Intercom on specific HomePods in your home.

You’ll know Siri is listening when you see the top of your HomePod light up.

Learn these Intercom commands

Using Apple’s Intercom is easy-peasy. With your HomePod within earshot, you can say something like “Hey Siri, intercom It’s time to eat.” A few seconds later, a recording of your message will play on the rest of your HomePods. It will also be sent to members of your home who’ve opted to receive remote alerts.

You can also use Siri on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch to send Intercom messages using the same phrases.

I’ve tried a few variations of the command and found that saying something along the lines of “ask everyone” or “announce” in place of “intercom” has worked. I’ve also tried using “broadcast,” but that has resulted in Siri playing a random song with broadcast in the title.

You can reply to an Intercom message you hear on a HomePod with the command “Hey Siri, reply I’ll be up in a minute.

If you want to limit the message to a specific room or area, you can specify that in your command. For instance, “Hey Siri, ask the basement what time do we need to leave?” would only send the Intercom message to any HomePods you have in the basement. You’ll need to use the same sort of phrasing if you want to limit a reply to a specific room, such as, “Hey Siri, reply to the bedroom we need to leave in 15 minutes.

You can listen to your Intercom messages on your iPhone.

Send messages from the Home app

There’s another way you can send an Intercom message without using Siri. This will work on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

On your phone or tablet, open the Home app and make sure you’re viewing the Home tab. Tap the Intercom icon in the top-right corner and start talking to create your message. Tap Done to send the message.

On your Apple Watch, open the Home app and tap the Intercom button, record your message and then tap Done to send it.
