Windows 10 includes a “Battery Saver” mode that’s designed to extend your laptop or tablet’s battery life. Windows will automatically enable Battery Saver when your PC’s battery runs low, but you can control this–and choose exactly what Battery Saver does.

What Exactly Does Battery Saver Mode Do?

Battery Saver is similar to Low Power Mode on an iPhone, or Battery Saver on Android. When it activates (or when you activate it), it makes a few changes to Windows’ settings in order to stretch your laptop’s battery life further.

First, it automatically lowers your display’s brightness. This is one big tweak that can save battery life on every single device, as the backlight uses quite a bit of power.

Battery Saver now aggressively throttles background apps you aren’t actively using, even if they’re desktop apps. This feature was added with the Fall Creators Update. “Universal apps” from the Windows Store will also not be able to run in the background and receive push notifications while this mode is enabled.

By default, Battery Saver mode automatically activates whenever your laptop or tablet reaches 20% battery life. Plug your PC in to recharge and Windows will deactivate Battery Saver mode.

How to Turn It On

You can turn Battery Saver mode on whenever you like. For example, you might want to turn it on manually at the start of a long day if you know you’ll be away from an outlet for a while.

To do so, just click or tap the battery icon in the notification area on your taskbar. Drag the slider to the leftmost position to activate “Battery Saver” mode.

This option is one click away from the battery icon, just as the “Power Saver” power plan was on Windows 7 and Windows 8. It’s clear Microsoft would rather you use this instead of messing with those old and confusing power plans.

You’ll also find a “Battery saver” quick settings tile in Windows 10’s Action Center. Swipe in from the right or click the Action Center icon in the system tray to access it.

Click the “Expand” link above the tiles at the bottom of the Action Center panel if you can’t see the Battery saver tile. You can rearrange these tiles to make the option more easily accessible, if you like.

How to Configure Battery Saver

You can configure what Battery Saver does and when it activates. To do so,head to Settings > System > Battery. You can also click the battery icon in your notification area and click the “Battery settings” link in the popup to access it.

Under “Battery saver”, you can choose whether Windows automatically enables Battery saver mode or not, and when it does. By default, Windows automatically enables Battery saver mode at 20% battery remaining. You could change this—for example, you could have Windows automatically enable Battery saver at 90% battery if you struggle with battery life on your laptop.

You can also disable the “Lower screen brightness while in battery saver” option, but this is very useful on all devices, so you should probably leave that one enabled. Unfortunately, there’s no way to configure the screen brightness level Battery Saver will use.

You can click the “Battery usage by app” link at the top of the Battery screen to see which apps are using the most battery and control how aggressively Windows throttles them in Battery saver mode.

How Useful Is Battery Saver Mode, Really?

Battery Saver’s screen brightness alone should save some pretty serious battery life. Of course, if you’re in the habit of manually lowering your screen brightness–something else you can do with a quick click or tap on the battery icon–you may not find this feature all that necessary. How much this will help depends on how bright you normally keep your screen and how power-hungry the backlight is.

This feature now reduces the power used by background desktop apps as well as universal apps, making it more useful on all PCs. Even if you only use traditional desktop apps, it’s worth enabling when you want to squeeze more battery life from your computer.

If you’re struggling with poor battery life, following our guide to extending your laptop‘s battery life will likely help more than Battery Saver mode will. Still, it’s a nice inclusion, and much easier to use than the Windows 7 and 8’s old “power plans”.

We all want to use our mobile devices without worrying about the battery life. But, because this is impossible, we need to use the power conservation technologies provided by our operating systems. If you are using a laptop or tablet with Windows 10, and you don’t want to run out of battery unexpectedly, you should read this article and see how to work with the battery saver:

How to turn off the battery saver in Windows 10

When the battery saver is enabled in Windows 10, the screen’s brightness is set to a low level, and the background activity, and push notifications are disabled to save energy. The battery saver is enabled automatically by Windows 10 when the battery level below 20% or a custom level set by the user.

The best way to turn off the battery saver is to plug your Windows 10 laptop or tablet into a power outlet. As soon as Windows 10 detects that your device is charging, it should stop using the battery saver.

Another way to turn off the battery saver is to click or tap the battery icon in the bottom-right corner of your desktop. The power slider should be found on the left margin. Move the slider to the right, to any other position, and the battery saver is disabled.

A third way to disable the battery saver in Windows 10 is to open Settings. Then, go to System and click or tap Battery in the column on the left. On the right, in the Battery saver section, look for the switch that says: “Battery saver status until next charge.” Set it to Off.

If you did this, and the battery saver is still turned on, then your battery may be at a critical level, under 20%, and you should charge your Windows 10 laptop, or tablet. However, you can still disable the battery saver, by unchecking the option that says: “Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below.”

How to turn on the battery saver in Windows 10

When you want to enable the battery saver on your Windows 10 laptop or tablet, click or tap the battery icon in the bottom-right corner of the desktop. Then, move the power slider to the left margin. When the battery saver mode is turned on, you see that the Power mode is named Battery saver.

Another visual confirmation is that you see a small green leaf over the battery icon from your taskbar, like in the screenshot below.

A second way to enable the battery saver in Windows 10 is to open Settings. Then, go to System and click or tap Battery in the column on the left. On the right, in the Battery saver section, look for “Battery saver status until next charge,” and set the switch to On.

The battery saver is now enabled in Windows 10, doing its best to lower the energy consumption and increase battery life.

If you want to personalize how the battery saver works, open Settings and go to System.

In the column on the left, choose Battery, and then look for Battery settings on the right. Besides the switch that turns the battery saver mode On and Off, you have other settings too. For instance, you can choose when the battery saver is turned on automatically. By default, it is set to activate when your battery is at 20% of its charging capacity, but you can change it to whatever level you want, by moving the slider. If you do not want the battery saver to turn on automatically when the battery reaches a particular point, uncheck the box next to “Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below,” and it is never going to turn itself on automatically. Secondly, the battery saver also includes an option for dimming the screen brightness so that less energy is being consumed. If you check the “Lower screen brightness while in battery saver” setting, when the battery saver turns on, your display is dimmed automatically.

Now, the battery saver from Windows 10 should be configured according to your needs.

Microsoft Store Mail, People, and Calendar apps do not sync.

Windows Push Notification Services (WNS) is affected when battery saver is on.

WNS is blocked by default on WindowsВ 10 Mobile. Users can chose individual apps to always be allowed to run while battery saver is on. There is no setting to allow WNS across all apps. This is the same behavior as Windows Phone 8.1.

WNS is allowed for all apps by default on WindowsВ 10 for desktop editions. Users can change this to the WindowsВ 10 Mobile model, where only always allowed apps run.

Non-critical Windows update downloads are blocked. However, Windows update scans still occur.

Display brightness is reduced by 30% for both WindowsВ 10 for desktop editions and WindowsВ 10 Mobile. Users can enable or disable this setting for WindowsВ 10 for desktop editions only.

OEMs can enable configure the display brightness value on WindowsВ 10 for desktop editions. However, for WindowsВ 10 Mobile, configuration is disabled. This value is controlled in the ESBRIGHTNESS SUB_ENERGYSAVER Powercfg setting.

The majority of telemetry is blocked.

Only critical telemetry is uploaded

Census data, and similar telemetry is critical and will be uploaded

Windows task scheduler tasks trigger only if the task is:

Not set to Start the task only if the computer is idle. (task doesn’t use IdleSettings)

Not set to run during automatic maintenance (task doesn’t use MaintenanceSettings)

Is set to Run only when user is logged on (task LogonType is TASK_LOGON_INTERACTIVE_TOKEN or TASK_LOGON_GROUP)

All other triggers are delayed until the system exits battery saver mode.

Google added a “Battery Saver” mode to Android with Android 5.0 Lollipop. On a modern Android device, this mode can kick in and help prolong your battery when it’s almost dead. You can tweak that battery threshold or enable Battery Saver mode manually.

What Does Battery Saver Mode Do?

Battery Saver functions similarly to Low Power Mode on Apple’s iPhones and iPads, or Battery Saver Mode on Windows 10. It’s designed to help stretch your battery life and save you time by automatically performing tweaks you might otherwise perform by hand.

When Battery Saver is enabled, Android will decrease your device’s performance to save battery power, so it’ll perform a bit less quickly but will stay running longer. Your phone or tablet won’t vibrate as much. Location services will also be restricted, so apps won’t use your device’s GPS hardware. This means Google Maps navigation also won’t function. Most background data usage will also be restricted. Email, messaging, and other types of app that rely on receiving new data may not update until you open them.

Battery Saver mode isn’t something you want enabled all of the time. While more battery life sounds great, turning off these features comes with significant downsides. This mode lowers performance, prevents background sync, and limits GPS access. That’s fine if the alternative is your phone dying, but it’s not something you want to deal with all the time–just when you’re really desperate to eke out a bit more battery.

How to Enable Battery Saver Mode Manually

To enable Battery Saver mode or change its settings on an Android device, first head to the Battery screen in the Settings app.

You can do this in a number of ways. For example, you could open the Settings app from the app drawer and tap “Battery.” Or, you could pull down the notification shade from the top of your screen, pull down again to access quick settings, tap the gear icon to open the Settings screen, and tap “Battery.” You could also just tap the battery icon in the quick settings shade to go directly to the Battery screen.

To manually enable Battery Saver mode, go to the Battery Saver screen and set the slider to “On.” While in Battery Saver mode, the bars at the top and bottom of your device’s screen will turn red to indicate you’re in Battery saver mode.

The color may look distracting, but it’s designed to quickly communicate to you that your phone is in Battery Saver mode. If your phone or tablet put itself into Battery Saver mode, this means it’s at a low battery level and you’ll want to charge it as soon as possible. You can’t disable the colored bars unless you root your phone and use a tweak like the Remove Battery Saver Warning Color module for the Xposed Framework.

How to Enable Battery Saver Mode Automatically

You don’t have to enable Battery saver manually. In fact, you generally shouldn’t. Instead, just have Android enable it when you need it.

Tap the “Turn on automatically” option on the Battery Saver screen and you can set Battery Saver mode to turn on automatically “at 15% battery,” “at 5% battery,” or “Never.” Unfortunately, there’s no way to set another battery threshold, so you can’t pick 20% or something else.

When your battery is running low, Battery Saver mode can keep it running longer until you can make it to an outlet and charge it. If you don’t like Battery Saver mode, this is also where you can disable it–set it to “Never” and you’ll never be bugged about Battery Saver mode again unless you visit this screen and enable it by hand.

How to Leave Battery Saver Mode

To leave Battery Saver mode, just plug in your phone or tablet and start charging it. Android will automatically disable Battery Saver mode while charging, and it’ll stay disabled when you unplug your phone.

You can also turn off Battery Saver mode manually. Just pull down your notification shade and tap “Turn Off Battery Saver” in the “Battery saver is on” notification.

You can also visit the Battery Saver screen in settings and set the slider to “Off.”

What If I Don’t Have Battery Saver Mode?

This feature is available on devices running Android 5.0 and later. It’s part of Google’s stock Android, so all devices should include it.

Some manufacturers also offer their own battery saver modes. For example, Samsung offers an “Ultra Power Saving Mode,” HTC offers an “EXTREME Power Saving Mode,” and Sony offers a “STAMINA mode” and “Low battery mode.”

If you’re using an older version of Android and don’t have a manufacturer-provided battery saving mode, there are still many other tweaks you can use. You could use manual refresh to save battery life, just like Battery saver mode does. You could perform other tweaks to extend your Android device’s battery, too.

Battery Saver mode is designed as a last-ditch failsafe that’ll help keep your phone from dying. If you need more battery life all of the time, you should try tweaking your Android device for more battery life rather than relying on Battery Saver mode all the time.

Windows 10 comes with a special feature called Battery Saver. It is intended to save your PC’s battery by limiting background app activity and putting your device hardware in power saving mode. It is possible to enable Battery Saver automatically when on battery or turn it on manually. Here is how.

Out-of-the-box, Battery Saver is disabled. You need to turn it on manually, or configure it so it becomes enabled automatically once the battery falls below the specified power percentage. These settings can be changed in the Settings app.

To enable Battery Saver in Windows 10, do the following.

  1. When your device is running on battery, you should see the Battery icon in the notification area of the taskbar. Click it to see the following flyout:
  2. Click on the Battery saver button to toggle enable this feature.

Alternatively, you can press Win + A to open the Action Center and use the appropriate Quick Action button as shown below.

Finally, you can configure Battery Saver using Settings. There, you can enable the feature manually and set options to enable it automatically when required.

Enable Battery Saver in Windows 10 using Settings

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to System -> Battery.
  3. On the right, you will see a number of options related to Battery Saver. To enable the Battery Saver right now, turn on the switch Battery saver status until next charge. This will enable the battery saver feature immediately.
  4. To enable the automatic Battery Saver feature, tick the check box Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below: and use the slider to set the desired battery percentage. Once the battery level falls below the specified percentage, the Battery Saver feature will be enabled automatically.

Tip: To manage the Battery Saver options quickly, you can create a special shortcut to open the Battery page in Settings directly. Here is how it can be done.

Create Battery Saver Shortcut in Windows 10

Right click the empty space on your Desktop. Select New – Shortcut in the context menu (see the screenshot).

Use “Battery Saver” as your shortcut’s name. Actually, you can use any name you like.

Right-click the shortcut you created and change its icon. An appropriate icon is present in the file %SystemRoot%\System32\taskbarcpl.dll.

Now, you can move this shortcut to any convenient location, pin it to taskbar or to Start, add to All apps or add to Quick Launch (see how to enable Quick Launch). You can also assign a global hotkey to your shortcut.
