How to get better results from your Bing searches

Bing is one of the world’s most popular search engines, but are you using it to its fullest potential? Like most search engines, there are ways to perform advanced searches on Bing to drastically cut down the results and ultimately display the answers you’re looking for.
Below are various advanced search tips you might not know you can use on Bing.
Bing isn’t the only search engine that accepts advanced keywords and other time-saving features. If you prefer Google, for example, there are advanced Google Search commands you can use.
Reverse Image Search on Bing
A Bing image match search is an easy way to find pictures that look like another image. You do this not by using text like a normal search, but instead by giving Bing the image you want to use as reference.
Select the image button on the home page to upload the image to Bing, give it a URL to an online image, or take a photo with your webcam.
After running the search using an image, you can find others that look like yours, locate related searches, and more.
Bing’s Advanced Video Search Options
There are several advanced search options when looking for videos on Bing. They’re stored in a hidden toolbar that’s only visible after selecting Filter.
You can use the advanced video search options to quickly refine the results to videos that are less than five minutes long, 5-20 minutes in length, or over 20 minutes long.
There’s also a date filter for videos on Bing so that you can find only videos posted within the last 24 hours, or videos from the last week, month, or year.
Resolution, source, and price filters are also available when looking up videos on Bing. This means you can find just free videos on YouTube, for example, that are at least 1080p in resolution.
Up-to-Date News on Bing
Similar to Bing’s video search options, you can find recent news over any topic with the Bing News advanced search filters. You can sort the news by most recent and even filter out everything that’s older than the last hour to ensure that you’re getting the most recent news possible.
Symbols to Streamline Your Bing Searches
These Bing search modifiers are other ways to get better results when searching for things:

Don’t include a space after the colon in any of these advanced queries.

Google may still be the top search engine, but Bing is starting to stand on its own. Bing has many of the same search operators offered by Google, but it has a few tricks you won’t find elsewhere.
Master these search operators and you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for, and do it faster. These search operators will also work in Yahoo, which is now powered by Bing.
Bing’s basic search operators work similarly to Google’s. Search for an exact phrase by surrounding it with quotes:
Omit words with the NOT or minus sign operators. For example, if you wanted to search for smartphones, but didn’t want any results mentioning the iPhone, you’d use one of the following:
smartphones NOT iphone
Use the OR or | operator to find pages that contain one word or another. For example, search for pages about Android or iPhone using one of the following:
android OR iphone
android | iphone
Use the site: operator to search within a specific website, just like on Google. For example, search for Bing-related content on How-To Geek with this query:
Bing can search for files of a specific type using the filetype: operator, just like Google. For example, search for PDF files about Bing with the following query:
Pages Containing a Link to a File Type
Bing doesn’t index all file types. If you wanted to find public domain MP3 files, the following query wouldn’t do anything:
Use the following query and you’ll get pages containing the words “public domain” that link to MP3 files:
If you type a search such as “bing awesome,” you’ll get pages that have the words “bing” and “awesome” anywhere on the page, even if they’re far apart. Use the near: operator to restrict the distance between search phrases. For example, the following query only returns pages where the words “bing” and “awesome” are within five words of each other:
Use the ip: operator to search websites located at a specific IP address. Here’s how to search How-To Geek’s current IP address:
Specify a Location or Language
Use the loc: operator to specify a specific location. For example, the following query returns tourist attractions in the UK:
Use the language: operator to specify a specific language.
For a full list of location and language codes, visit Microsoft’s website.
Use the feed: operator to find Web feeds that contain a word. You could use this to find blogs about a topic. For example, find feeds that contain the word “geek” with the following query:
If you don’t want to find a feed itself, just a website that has a feed, use the hasfeed: operator:
The real power comes when you start combining search operators, stitching together complex queries out of several different operators.
What are Google search operators?
Google search operators are special characters and commands (sometimes called “advanced operators”) that extend the capabilities of regular text searches. Search operators can be useful for everything from content research to technical SEO audits.
How do I use search operators?
You can enter search operators directly into the Google search box, just as you would a text search:
Except in special cases (such as the “in” operator), Google will return standard organic results.
Google search operators cheat sheet
You can find all of the major organic search operators below, broken up into three categories: “Basic”, “Advanced”, and “Unreliable”. Basic search operators are operators that modify standard text searches.
|I. Basic Search Operators|

Put any phrase in quotes to force Google to use exact-match. On single words, prevents synonyms.
|OR||tesla OR edison
Google search defaults to logical AND between terms. Specify “OR” for a logical OR (ALL-CAPS).
||||tesla | edison
The pipe (|) operator is identical to “OR”. Useful if your Caps-lock is broken 🙂
|( )||(tesla OR edison) alternating current
Use parentheses to group operators and control the order in which they execute.
Put minus (-) in front of any term (including operators) to exclude that term from the results.
|*||tesla “rock * roll”
An asterisk (*) acts as a wild-card and will match on any word.
|#..#||tesla announcement 2015..2017
Use (..) with numbers on either side to match on any integer in that range of numbers.
|$||tesla deposit $1000
Search prices with the dollar sign ($). You can combine ($) and (.) for exact prices, like $19.99.
|€||€9,99 lunch deals
Search prices with the Euro sign (€). Most other currency signs don’t seem to be honored by Google.
|in||250 kph in mph
Use “in” to convert between two equivalent units. This returns a special, Knowledge Card style result.
Advanced search operators are special commands that modify searches and may require additional parameters (such as a domain name). Advanced operators are typically used to narrow searches and drill deeper into results.

Search only in the page’s title for a word or phrase. Use exact-match (quotes) for phrases.
|allintitle:||allintitle: tesla vs edison
Search the page title for every individual term following “allintitle:”. Same as multiple intitle:’s.
|inurl:||tesla announcements inurl:2016
Look for a word or phrase (in quotes) in the document URL. Can combine with other terms.
|allinurl:||allinurl: amazon field-keywords nikon
Search the URL for every individual term following “allinurl:”. Same as multiple inurl:’s.
|intext:||intext:”orbi vs eero vs google wifi”
Search for a word or phrase (in quotes), but only in the body/document text.
|allintext:||allintext: orbi eero google wifi
Search the body text for every individual term following “allintext:”. Same as multiple intexts:’s.
|filetype:||“tesla announcements” filetype:pdf
Match only a specific file type. Some examples include PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, and TXT.
Return sites that are related to a target domain. Only works for larger domains.
|AROUND(X)||tesla AROUND(3) edison
Returns results where the two terms/phrases are within (X) words of each other.
Unreliable operators have either been found to produce inconsistent results or have been deprecated altogether. The “link:” operator was officially deprecated in early 2017. It appears that “inanchor:” operators are still in use, but return very narrow and sometimes unreliable results. Use link-based operators only for initial research.
Note that, for all of the “allin. ” operators, Google will try to apply the operator to every term following it. Combining “allin. ” operators with any other operators will almost never produce the desired results.
Search Operator Tips & Tricks
Having all of the pieces is only the first step in building a puzzle. The real power of search operators comes from combining them.
1. Chain together operator combos
You can chain together almost any combination of text searches, basic operators, and advanced operators:
This search returns any pages that mention “Nikola Tesla” (exact-match), have the phrase “Top (X) facts” in the title, where X ranges from 5 to 10, are not on YouTube.com, and have “2015” somewhere in the URL.
2. Hunt down plagiarized content
Trying to find out if your content is unique or if someone is plagiarizing you? Use a unique phrase from your text, put it in quotes (exact-match) after an “intext:” operator, and exclude your own site with “-site:”.
Similarly, you can use “intitle:” with a long, exact-match phrase to find duplicate copies of your content.
3. Audit your HTTP->HTTPS transition
Switching a site from HTTP to HTTPS can be challenging. Double-check your progress by seeing how many of each type of page Google has indexed. Use the “site:” operator on your root domain and then exclude HTTPS pages with “-inurl:”.
This will help you track down any stragglers or find pages that might not have been re-crawled by Google.

Key Difference – Bing vs Google
The key difference between Google and Bing is that Bing is better when performing video searches while Google comes fully featured. Google has been the dominant force in the search engine world. Bing, on the other hand, lost its ground due to the competition provided by Google. But if we have a closer look at both the search engines, there is not much of a difference as many believe. Although Bing has many strengths, many people ignore many features of Bing which enable it to perform as like Google. Let’s take a closer look at both the powerful search engines to see what they offer.
What is Bing?
Bing is the last name that was used by Microsoft’s search engine. Previously, it was known as Windows Live search and MSN search. The Bing brand came with the aim of presenting real world results than just finding text on a page and called itself a “decision engine.”

What is Google?
Google is easily the most used search engine in the world. Google search has been around since 1997 and has been seen improving with advanced features, smarter results, and integration with other Google products.

What is the difference between Bing and Google?
Basic Layout and Features
Both Google and Bing feel and look similar when it comes to basic search results. Other than the logo and the font on the top, the search results for both the search engines are similar.
Bing: The video search that comes with Bing is significantly better than Google. This is a big difference between the two in comparison. Bing will give you a grid of large thumbnails where you can click and play without leaving Bing. For some videos, you can watch a preview as you hover over the video.
Google: Google, on the other hand, will give you a vertical list of videos with small thumbnails.
Bing: In most cases, Bing gives more autocomplete answers when compared with Google. Bing usually gives eight while Google gives four. This feature is especially usefully when using the autocomplete feature to find alternative products and in finding wildcard suggestions.
Google: Less autocomplete suggestions which usually is only four.
Bing: Bing is not ideal for shopping suggestions as Google performs this task in a better way.
Google: Google shows shopping suggestions more often than Bing does. Google’s suggestions are generally much better too. So, if you are looking for a product which is available in certain stores, or to find the best price online, Google search is better than Bing.
Both Google and Bing will display search results that will generally be what you want. Both produce results that according to the keywords that were used in the search.
Google: You will note that Google will perform better when specific questions, like a technical question, are directed. If the question is more specific, Google will find and organize the results in a better way.
Bing: This is good at search results for general queries.
Bing: Bing has adopted many of the smart search features that come with Google like unit conversions, movie show times, local weather, famous people, and related stuff. Many of these features yield the same results. Bing comes with a feature that predicts flight ticket prices when you are searching for flights.
Google: Google has a few things that Bing does not provide like health info, movie and video game release dates.
Google: Google has an image search which is smooth to use.
Bing: Image search of Bing is powered by some advanced options. One of these features is Layout, which lets you search for images in portrait and landscape modes. Bing also lets you remove search terms with just a click which is a great feature to have.
Related Search Results
Bing: Bing puts its related search results to the right of the page.
Google: Google puts is related search results to the bottom of the page.
Both Bing and Google come with advanced operators that are comparable. Although the syntax may be different, both show a lot of overlap.
Bing: Bing can perform two searches that are not available with Google. “Contains” will allow you to search for pages that contain certain files types. “Link information” that show shows the best-ranked pages linked from a site and “feed” which enables you to search for RSS feeds on a particular subject.
Google: Google has more features and is better in doing advanced searches.
Bing: Bing lets you earn a point for each search you perform. You can redeem these points for gift cards at Starbucks, Amazon, and Gamestop and even use the collected point to donate to charity.
Google: Google has a few extra features that have been built into its search. These include reverse search, instant search, voice search, and search being integrated with other Google services like Gmail, Google Now, and Google contacts. This is very useful when you are using a lot of products that are offered by Google.

Google is the better search engine when we compare both. It has been around for a long time, and is popular and innovating all the time. Both Bing and Google are very similar in features. Bing is better in some aspects like videos. Bing may be preferred for general results over Google occasionally. Google is able to dig deep into the internet to find what you are looking for. Although you may think Google search is the best out there, Bing is not far behind.

Search engines like Google and Bing have a web crawler (also called spider) that regularly visits web pages on the internet and indexes the visited web pages according to the applied algorithm.
You can search nearly everything on Bing. But sometimes, Bing presents too many results for certain queries. Especially if the query you entered is too general. For instance, if you are looking for PDF scientific papers about photography licenses, I am pretty sure you will type something like “photography license pdf”. This keyword is great, but there is a better way you can use. There is an advanced search operator that will provide a more specific search results: filetype.
If you type “filetype:pdf photography license” on Bing, all search results presented by Bing will contain a PDF file in the keyword of “photography license”.
Filetype is just an example. There are several other advanced search operators you can use on Bing to narrow down the search results.
Filter the results to focus on sites that have links to the file types that you specify.

Filter the results to display web pages created in the file type that you specify
Example: filetype:pdf photography license
Finds sites that are hosted by a specific IP address.
Filter the results to display web pages for a specific language.
Example: photography language:th
Filter the results to display web pages from a specific country or region.

Google has been synonymous with search for years, and Bing—poor Bing—quickly became synonymous with sarcasm about why anyone would ever use Bing. Believe it or not, though, the two search engines aren’t as different as the jokes would have you believe.
We’ve talked about Bing’s biggest strengths before , but people often ignore that Bing also does a lot of things just about as well as Google. Is it better? Probably not, but I decided to give the two a real side-by-side comparison to find out how they stacked up.
You’re probably familiar with the two search engines already, but just for a refresher, here’s what we’re talking about:
- Google: By far the most used search engine in the world, Google Search has been around since 1997 and is constantly improving with new smart results, advanced features, and integration with other Google products. As of February of this year, Google currently has 64.5% of the US’s search market share .
- Bing: Bing is the latest name for Microsoft’s search engine, previously called Windows Live Search and MSN Search. Bing brands itself as a “decision engine”, aiming to present results with more real-world context than just finding text on a page. Bing also powers Yahoo’s search, which, coupled with Bing, serves 32.6% of US internet searchers.
Basic Layout and Search Features
Both sites look and feel remarkably similar when it comes to basic search results. In fact, except for the font and the logo at the top of the page, it’d be easy to confuse one for the other. Here are the main differences I’ve noticed after poking around in each:
- Bing’s video search is significantly better than Google’s. This is the biggest difference between the two (and why Bing has a bit of a reputation as “the porn search engine”). Instead of giving you a vertical list of videos with small thumbnails, it gives you a grid of large thumbnails that you can click on to play without leaving Bing. For some videos, it’ll even give you a preview if you hover over.
- Bing gives more autocomplete suggestions than Google does in most cases. Google only gives four, while Bing gives eight. This is particularly useful if you’re using autocomplete to find alternative products or to get wildcard suggestions .
- Google’s shopping suggestions show up more often than Bing’s do, and they’re generally much better. So if you’re trying to find out which stores carry a certain product, or where to find the best price online, Google will be better than Bing.
- Google’s Image Search interface feels a bit smoother when you use it, though Bing has one or two more advanced options like “Layout” (which lets you search for portrait or landscape images). Bing’s image search also lets you remove certain parts of your search term with one click, which is kind of cool (I wish it did this for all searches).
- Bing puts related searches and related image searches to the right of your search results, while google puts them near the bottom. This isn’t really a good or a bad thing; it’s just a difference.
Bing has also adopted many of Google’s “smart searches” , like movie showtimes, unit conversions, local weather, information about famous people, and stuff like that. Most of this stuff is remarkably similar, though Google has a few things that Bing doesn’t, like health info and release dates for movies and video games. If you’re relying on smart searches, go with Google. (One exception: if you’re searching for flights, Bing has a neat feature that predicts whether ticket prices will go up or down .)
