How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)

Apple Watch includes storage space for adding content like apps, photos, and music, with up to some of that space dedicated to storing songs. When you add a playlist, you can listen to music on it, even when your iPhone is not in range. While the process is fairly self-explanatory, there are a few steps you don’t want to forget in order to play music from Apple Watch to your Bluetooth connected headphones

Adding Music to Apple Watch

In order to listen to music on Apple Watch without an iPhone in range, you must sync a playlist to it first.

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and tap My Watch.
  2. Select Music from the list.
  3. Tap “Synced Playlist” to access your iPhone’s playlist.
  4. Select a playlist from the list (if there is no playlist visible in this list, you will need to create one on your iPhone).
  5. Place your Apple Watch on its charger to initiate the sync. This step is important. Apple Watch will not sync a playlist if it has not been connected to the charger.

How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)
You can customize your playlist limit here. Switch between the amount of storage or number of songs to change the view. Select 100 MB, 500 MB, 1.0 GB, or 2.0 GB of storage (or 15, 50, 125 or 250 songs). When you reach your maximum playlist limit, you won’t be able to add more music.

To remove all playlists from Apple Watch, select “None” at the bottom of the Playlist screen.

Pairing Bluetooth Headphones

How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)You may be able to listen to music directly from Apple Watch, but only through Bluetooth headphones. Without them, music will only play through the iPhone.

  1. Put your headphones in Discovery mode.
  2. Open the Settings app on Apple Watch.
  3. Tap Bluetooth.
  4. Select the headphones you wish to pair.

Listening to Music on Apple Watch

There’s one more important first step to listening to music directly on Apple Watch using Bluetooth headphones, and that involves changing the source for the music.

Get those tunes even without an iPhone

It might depend on the iPhone for a lot of things, but an Apple Watch can pretty much play music on its own. Even when there is no iPhone nearby.

Many might not know this but if you have an Apple Watch 3 or newer you can actually store and play music right on the Apple Watch. The smartwatch offers 8 GB worth of storage out of which you can use about 2 GB to store music and that translates into a lot of songs – hey, an iPod Shuffle at one time had less storage space. And it is all there right on your wrist.

How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)

Once you have saved music on your Apple Watch you can connect your Bluetooth headphones with the watch and can listen to music even without your iPhone. That makes it very handy indeed for those times when you need music, but cannot be bothered to turn to your phone for it – times like working out, taking a walk, strolling around the house (easier to keep a watch on than carry a phone), or maybe even while sitting and writing (we are doing this right now – hey, no iPhones around). Or actually, you can even simply use your Apple Watch to play music off a Bluetooth speaker (though not on a HomePod!).

A few points to keep in mind

Turning your Apple Watch into a music player is rather simple, but before you sync any music on your Apple Watch, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

  • Your Apple Watch needs to be Apple Watch 3 or later for you to be able to sync music on it.
  • Make sure your Apple Watch is connected to its charger. You will not be able to add music to the watch if it is not connected to the charger.
  • Make sure the Bluetooth on your iPhone is turned on and the phone is connected to the watch and is nearby when you are syncing music.

Getting music on your Apple Watch

Once you are through with this preamble, follow these simple steps to store and play music on your Apple Watch:

Open Apple Watch App on your iPhone

How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)
On your iPhone, you have to find the Apple Watch App. It comes pre-installed on the iPhone so you do not have to go through the work of installing another app on your phone.

Find Music

How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)
Once you have the Apple Watch app opened on your iPhone, you will need to scroll down and find the “Music” option. The option would have a small Apple Music icon right next to it. Select the option.

Add music

How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)
Tapping on the Music option will open a new window where you will find the option to add music here. Tap on the “+ Add music” option. This will take you to your music library from where you can select the music you wish to sync on your Apple Watch.

Automatically adding recently played music

How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)
You also have the option to add music that you have been recently listening to automatically to your Apple Watch. You just have to tap the toggle and the music will sync automatically.

That’s it really. The process can be a little time consuming (depending on how much music you have to put on the watch, of course) so we would recommend you do it either at night or when you have some time to spare.

Listening to music from your Apple Watch

Now that you have music on your Apple Watch, listening to it would require a pair of Bluetooth headphones. Connecting Bluetooth headphones with your Apple Watch is an easy enough procedure and you can do it by simply following these steps:

  • Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch and find Bluetooth:
How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)
On your Apple Watch, go to the main menu and find the Settings App. Once you have your Settings app opened, scroll down to find the Bluetooth option.
  • Select “Bluetooth”:
Tap open the Bluetooth icon and search for the Bluetooth headphone that you want to connect from the list of devices. For this make sure your Bluetooth accessory is discoverable and its pairing settings are on.
  • Select your Bluetooth headphones:
How to use bluetooth headphones and speakers with apple watch (to listen to music)
Once you have found your headphones in the list, tap on them to connect with your Apple Watch, and voila! You can now play and listen to your music on your Apple Watch without your iPhone!
  • Go to Music…and hit “play”:
On your Apple Watch, go to music (it is the icon with the musical note) and choose what you wish to play. Enjoy.

You can choose the same process for playing music from your Apple Watch on a Bluetooth speaker too. However, the HomePods are not supported.

No headphone jack? No problem. Here’s how to use your Watch to listen to music during your run — without your phone.

Without a nearby iPhone, the Watch can’t answer calls or receive notifications, but you can use Bluetooth headphones to listen to music stored on the device. Here’s how to set it up.

Step 1: Put music on your Watch

Of the 8GB of storage on the Watch, up to 2GB can be used for music storage, which roughly translates to about 500 songs. To get music on your Watch, launch the Apple Watch app on your phone, then head to Music.

First, decide how many songs you want to sync with the Playlist Limit option. You can set a limit based on storage capacity or number of songs. When that’s set, go back and choose the playlist you want to sync.

Just remember that if the size of the playlist exceeds whatever limit you set, not all songs will make the cut. If you want to avoid this, create a playlist using your Playlist Limit option as a guideline.

Now the hard part: wait. Place your Watch on its charger and kick back as the playlist syncs. In my experience, it’s a time-consuming process, so you might want to do this overnight.

Step 2: Connect the Watch to Bluetooth headphones

Since the Watch doesn’t have a headphone jack, you’ll have to rely on Bluetooth headphones. There are quite a few available these days — here are some of the best BT headphones (and some of the best cheap Bluetooth headphones ).

To connect the Watch to Bluetooth headphones, put your headphones (or speaker) in pairing mode. Then go to the Settings app (on the Watch) > Bluetooth, and your headphones should appear. Select them from the list, and you’re set.

Step 3: Choose the source and hit Play

When your music is done syncing and your headphones are connected, you’re almost ready to use your Watch like an iPod. The last thing to do is change the music source in the Music app.

On the Watch, go to the Music app. Force touch (tap and push in on the screen) to bring up more options. Select Source > Apple Watch. At this point, the playlist you synced should appear in the app and you’re ready to listen to music without your iPhone.

We get a lot of questions about Bluetooth and how it works in water.

Bluetooth (BT) is a standard for communication between devices, and can be used to send audio from a source (like an iPhone) to a receiver (like BT headphones). All BT devices use 2.4GHz radio frequency—which does not work well in water. This is due to laws of physics, as water molecules attenuate the signal. When any Bluetooth device is put underwater, the range is just few inches. Also, Bluetooth is a low-power system and the range in air is about 30ft/10m.

So, how can you use Bluetooth with swimming?

A: Your Bluetooth source is on land (side of the pool):

You will need to be within the Bluetooth range of 30ft/10m and the STREAM or SURGE BT needs to be above the surface.

Many customers have put their phone on the side of the pool and have been very successful with this. Clip the STREAM on top of your head and this will keep it from submerging and the best way to maintain connection.

B: Your Bluetooth music source is with you:

Some customers use their Apple Watch as the music source. The Apple Watch can send music to INTERVAL

If you want try to use SURGE BT or STREAM player – In this case, you have to taken the Apple Watch off your wrist and strap it on your goggles near the SURGE BT or STREAM. Not optimal, but it works well.

C: Other Alternatives?

Also – if you are looking to listen to streaming music, there are other options:

Put Your Bluetooth Headphones into Pairing Mode

To pair Bluetooth headphones with a new device, they need to be put into pairing mode, which makes them available for new connections. The exact process varies from make to make, but it normally involves holding down the power button, a dedicated pairing button, or a combination of buttons for a few seconds.
