How to use google maps for navigation in apple carplay

Some CarPlay users may prefer to use Google Maps on CarPlay, instead of Apple Maps. Using Google Maps on CarPlay is simple, and you can easily replace the maps icon on a CarPlay unit with Google Maps (or even Waze) if desired. We’ll show you how to add Google Maps to CarPlay and also how to replace Apple Maps with Google Maps if it’s your preferred mapping, navigation, and directions tool.

Requirements to use Google Maps on CarPlay are fairly straight forward: the iPhone must be running iOS 12 or later, the iPhone must have a new version of Google Maps (update the app if you aren’t sure or download it from App Store), and you must have a CarPlay car or CarPlay receiver. Beyond that, you simply need to have CarPlay setup with iPhone, and you’re ready to go.

How to Use Google Maps on CarPlay

  1. Bring the iPhone into the car with CarPlay if you haven’t done so already and make sure they’re working as expected
  2. Open the “Settings” app on iPhone
  3. Go to “General” and then choose “CarPlay”
  4. Select the car which has CarPlay
  5. Locate Google Maps on the screen, and then tap and hold on the Google Maps icon to drag it to the primary CarPlay Home screen for easy access
  6. Optionally: to replace Apple Maps with Google Maps on CarPlay, move the Apple Maps icon to elsewhere and make the Google Maps icon more prominent
  7. Exit out of CarPlay settings on iPhone
  8. Use CarPlay in the vehicle as usual

Now you simply launch Google Maps on CarPlay as you would any other CarPlay app, and you’re using Google Maps with CarPlay.

Launching Google Maps will open it immediately on CarPlay as the navigation app, as this nice image from Google demonstrates:

How to use google maps for navigation in apple carplay

Note that it’s not currently possible to completely replace Apple Maps with Google Maps for default behavior or things like Siri navigation requests, but it’s possible that will change down the road.

How to Add the Google Maps App to CarPlay

Assuming Google Maps is installed on the iPhone and the iPhone is setup with CarPlay, then Google Maps should be available right away with CarPlay, but sometimes it’s not or was removed. If you don’t see Google Maps available on CarPlay, and you’re sure you’re using iOS 12 or later with a new version of Google Maps, you can add the Google Maps app directly to CarPlay by doing the following:

  1. Open “Settings” the iPhone
  2. Choose “General” and then tap “CarPlay” and then tap your cars name
  3. Locate the Google Maps app in the list, and then tap the “+” plus button to add it to CarPlay

If you’re not sure how to setup and use CarPlay, you can follow these instructions to get that configured. Not all cars support CarPlay by default, and some require a third party CarPlay compatible stereo to be installed to gain the feature.

Many of the general Google Maps tips for driving will work on CarPlay whether for voice navigation or otherwise, but obviously those that are specific to a phone or desktop app will be different or unavailable.

Can I replace Google Maps as CarPlay default for Siri instead of Apple Maps?

Whether you have Google Maps on the iPhone with CarPlay or not, Siri will continue to use Apple Maps as the default if you summon for Siri and ask for directions or navigation somewhere. Thus if you want to use Google Maps as the default, you must open it manually on CarPlay rather than by asking for directions from Siri.

Basically this means if you want to replace Apple Maps with Google Maps on CarPlay, you have to move Google Maps to be more prominent while putting Apple Maps somewhere less prominent, then remember to launch Google Maps instead. This may change down the road, but currently that’s the way CarPlay and Maps work together.

Need a reliable map on your Apple Watch? You can now ask your watch for turn-by-turn directions from Google.

How to use google maps for navigation in apple carplay

Apple Maps is built into your Apple Watch for turn-by-turn directions, but after a lengthy absence, Google Maps is also available to help you navigate your surroundings. You can use Google Maps on your phone and watch together to see directions for specific destinations, take you home or to work, get somewhere by car or by foot, and get an ETA for your current trip.

Install Google Maps

Your first step would be to install Google Maps on your Apple Watch, if it isn’t already there. The app should first be downloaded to your iPhone from the App Store. Open the Watch app on your phone and swipe down the My Watch screen until you reach Available Apps. Tap the Install button next to Google Maps and it will move to the Installed section on your Apple Watch.

Enable Location Tracking

Make sure that Google Maps is able to track your location. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Google Maps and set the Allow Location Access option to While Using the App or Always.

Set Up Addresses

Your next step should be to set your Home and Work addresses in Google Maps on your iPhone. You can then easily get directions to either location directly on your watch. To do this, open the app on your phone. Tap the Saved icon at the bottom and select the list for Labeled.

Tap the Set once and go link under Home and then add your home address either by typing it, selecting it on a map, or choosing it from your contact list. Then do the same for your work address. You can also add other addresses to the Favorites section for quick access, such as your doctor, favorite restaurants, or the nearest hospital.

Set Travel Mode

You can also set your preferred travel mode. In the watch app, swipe down the screen and tap Set travel mode. Here, you can set the mode for Walking, Driving (the default), Transit, or Bicycling. Choose your preferred mode, then set your destination to get directions via your choice of transportation method.

Navigation on Apple Watch

Now open the Google Maps app on your watch. You should see the shortcuts you created for home, work, and any other spots. Tap one of those shortcuts to receive turn-by-turn directions. At the same time, your phone will display a map and route to your destination. You can tap the Start button in Google Maps on your iPhone to see directions on your phone along with your watch.

In order to navigate to a destination not saved as a shortcut, you’ll need to use Google Maps on your phone. Open the app on your phone and enter an address to get directions, then tap the Start button. The entry for Current Trip will show your ETA in the app on your watch. You can then tap the entry to see turn-by-turn directions to your destination.

Using Google Maps Navigation In Apple CarPlay Mode [Workaround]

Have Apple CarPlay compatible in-dash system in your car? Want to use Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation while in CarPlay mode? Here’s a workaround of sorts to use Google Maps navigation with Apple CarPlay.

Now if you have ever used CarPlay, you’ll probably know that Google Maps app isn’t available as yet for Apple’s iOS-in-the-car solution. Now whether that is because Apple hasn’t allowed it or whether Google isn’t interested in bringing its popular maps app to Apple’s ecosystem is anybody’s guess at this point.

How to use google maps for navigation in apple carplay

Instead, CarPlay, as expected, features Apple Maps app for directions and turn-by-turn navigation. And while Apple has worked a lot to improve its mapping service since its debut back with iOS 6, it still can’t match Google’s offering for coverage, more accurate data, directions, and turn-by-turn navigation.

Like most CarPlay users, I have been looking for an alternative to Apple Maps app because it just doesn’t cut it for me. And while Apple does allow third-parties to develop apps for CarPlay, the App Store review system for approving CarPlay compatible apps is apparently much more strict than it’s for iOS and other Apple platforms, and it is probably for that reason no other navigation app has been approved for CarPlay as yet. It’s either that or no other developer has shown interest in investing time and resources into porting their iOS navigation app to CarPlay. Now that might change in future, but until then, I have found this workaround of sorts in getting turn-by-turn navigation from Google Maps to work in CarPlay mode.

How to use google maps for navigation in apple carplay

Now this by no way means you’ll get actual maps and directions from Google Maps to show up on your in-dash display. I’m calling it a “workaround” for a reason, and that reason is that while you can’t get the maps from Google to show up on the display, you can still get audible turn-by-turn navigation commands from Google Maps app running on your iPhone routed through CarPlay into your in-dash system. The advantage of this is that you’ll get to use Google’s turn-by-turn navigation (voice only) while still being able to use CarPlay for hands-free Siri, phone calling, texting, Apple Music, and more – all from one iPhone connected to your CarPlay-compatible stereo system.

Here’s how to go about this:

Step 1: Download and install Google Maps app on your iPhone. This is a no brainer!

Step 2: Make sure backgrounding and location services for Google Maps app is enabled. To check this, head into Settings > General > Background App Refresh, and Settings > Privacy > Location Services and then make sure toggle for Google Maps is turned on.

Step 3: Connect your iPhone to your CarPlay-compatible in-dash system via Lightning cable. This should automatically launch CarPlay in most cases.

Step 4: Launch Google Maps app on the same iPhone, select the location you want to get directions for, and then start turn-by-turn navigation.

Step 5: Once the navigation in Google Maps has started, hit the Home button to send the app to the background. Now if you enabled backgrounding and location services for Google Maps app as mentioned in step 2 above, the turn-by-turn navigation in Google Maps app should continue in the background as you start driving towards the destination.

Like mentioned earlier, the audio from Google Maps navigation will be routed through your in-dash system on to the speakers of the car. You can continue using CarPlay as usual, this includes launching any music or radio app and listening to any music you like.

You can also continue using hands-free Siri as usual to ask for weather or reply/send text messages.

You can also make or receive hands-free phone calls in CarPlay – all while audible turn-by-turn navigation commands from Google Maps on iPhone come through the audio system in the car.

The system will also automatically lower the volume of any phone call or music that is currently playing and plays the audio from navigation in higher volume for any new incoming turn-by-turn command from Google Maps app.

With this setup, whenever I need turn-by-turn navigation, I simply set it up in the Google Maps app on iPhone, then play whatever music I want from Apple Music or Vox app, and then I launch Apple Maps in CarPlay mode and start driving.

This way I get to hear turn-by-turn navigation from Google Maps, music from Apple Music, and see my current position in Apple’s Maps app on in-dash display. I can also use Siri whenever I want – all from CarPlay mode.

It’s not perfect, but it works for me, at least for now.

In case you are wondering what kind of CarPlay receiver am I using, it’s a aftermarket system from Pioneer fitted in a 2012 Toyota Corolla. You can get the same model for about $399 from Amazon here.

Google Maps is now supported by Apple CarPlay, which means that iPhone users can navigate with Google Maps right from their car’s built-in display. Read on to learn how to get the most out of the new experience:

Real time information when you need it: Google Maps on CarPlay features the same navigation experience found in the app. Search for places, see alternative routes and get live, up to date information about traffic jams and delays happening right now. See an up to the minute ETA so you know exactly when you’ll be at your destination.

Never miss a beat. You know the drill. You’re rushing out the door, and you immediately start navigating on your iPhone to see how long it’ll take you to get to your destination. Google Maps on CarPlay lets you start navigation from your iPhone and immediately pick up where you left off once you’ve connected to CarPlay – because we know that minutes matter when you’re pressed for time.

No data? No problem. You can still find your way even if you have spotty reception or an expensive data plans. Whether you’re camping in the wilderness or traveling abroad, you can use downloaded maps of an area so you can see directions and use turn by turn navigation even when you can’t get online.

Save time when commuting: If you’ve set up your commute within the app, you can quickly navigate to home or work. While en route, you’ll see real time traffic updates about your journey so you can be prepared for whatever the ride has in store.

Google Maps is now available to use with CarPlay on all CarPlay supported vehicles and devices globally.

To get started, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 12, update your app to Version 5 in the App Store and connect your iPhone via CarPlay. Have an Android phone? Make sure to check out Google Maps on Android Auto.

Apple CarPlay is an infotainment system many cars now offer, and the software allows drivers to easily sync an iPhone to their vehicle.

However, you weren’t always able to access Google Maps on Apple CarPlay. Thankfully, that changed last year with an update to the system, and you can now use Google Maps instead of the default Apple Maps.

To swap Apple Maps for Google Maps, you’ll just have to add Google Maps to your “Include” list in the CarPlay settings on your iPhone.

Here’s how to do it.

How to add Google Maps to Apple CarPlay

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

2. Click on the General tab.

3. Tap “CarPlay” in the second section.

4. This will bring you to a list of cars you have synced with Apple CarPlay. The page also provides instructions for CarPlay setup. Tap the car of your choosing.

5. For each car, you will have the option to customize your settings. Tap “Customize” to do so.

6. On this page, you’ll find the standard Apple apps included on your CarPlay home screen. These include built-in iOS apps such as Phone and Messages. Apple Maps is the default navigation app used.

7. Under “More Apps” you can find other apps that still work with CarPlay, such as Spotify and Google Maps.

8. Tap the green plus sign (+) to the left of “Google Maps” to add it to your “Include” list.

9. This will add Google Maps to your list. You can always remove it by tapping the red minus sign (-) to the left. You can also reorder your apps by tapping and dragging the three bars on the right hand side.

The world might feel like a mess right now, depending on your technological, financial, or political interests, but there’s one thing I think we can all get universally excited about. Google Maps has finally come to CarPlay.

I honestly never thought I’d see the day when Apple would allow anything but its own services to live on your car’s digital dashboard. Meager little things like podcasting apps or YouTube, sure, whatever, but Google Maps? That’s practically admitting that Apple Maps is a failure, since it doesn’t take a genius (bar) to realize that most CarPlay users—who likely used Google Maps long before Apple Maps came along—will jump ship to Google’s app the second they’re allowed to.

The only reason I ever used Apple Maps at all was because it was the only app that would work seamlessly on CarPlay (with Siri support, no less). Now that the floodgates are open, I’m more excited than I should be to make Google Maps my primary, and only, mapping app forevermore.

Here are a few tips to get you started—including a fun little way you can “use Siri” with Google Maps, all thanks to iOS 12’s handy Shortcuts feature.

Use the microphone

When you tap on Google Maps on CarPlay, you’ll get a little overlay that allows you to select a destination you’d like to travel to, access the app’s options and, buried in the lower-right corner, talk to Google Maps itself. While there’s no (great) way to use Siri to load up a destination in Google Maps—more on that in a bit—at least you’re only two taps away from being able to yell your directions into Google Maps.

(Pocket-lint) – Google Maps is finally available as a navigation option on Apple CarPlay.

An update to the iOS app has added CarPlay support, which means you can choose to use Google Maps rather than Apple Maps. Waze is also coming as a CarPlay app in the near future.

Google Maps gives you the ability to navigate to search results, such as places of interest, which is unlikely to be the case with your conventional in-car satnav. Here then is what you have to do to get Google Maps working on your CarPlay system.

  1. First, update your iPhone to iOS 12 – this is essential for getting Google Maps to work on CarPlay.
  2. Now update the Google Maps app if it hasn’t automatically done so on your phone.
  3. Once done, go to Settings > General > CarPlay on your iPhone and select your car. You will see an app screen where Google Maps will have appeared. If you don’t want it to be on page two of your in-car display, drag the icon onto the home screen as you would any app on your phone.
  4. Plug the phone into the USB port in your car – or connect it wirelessly if you have that option. You will see the CarPlay screen appear with Google Maps available.
  5. Tap on Google Maps and you can set your destination in much the same way as you could on Apple Maps.

Google Maps is a great alternative for some, especially if they prefer the app on their handset. It provides live traffic reports and information you might not get elsewhere – especially a conventional satellite navigation system.

How to use google maps for navigation in apple carplay

The one issue we’ve found is that, like Apple Maps, the information is not fed to the driver display in our car. The central, smaller display shows direction markers with the in-car satnav active but not CarPlay information.

Outside of music streaming services, the most used app in CarPlay is probably Maps. Whether you’re looking for a business to or traveling out of state, it’s much easier to be told where to go than navigating from memory or a map.

Most of Maps interface in CarPlay is pretty straightforward, but there are a few tricky parts. Let’s take a look at some of the app’s basic functions and how you can use them to get the most out of your experience.

What’s coming with iOS 14?

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That’s why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.

There are changes coming to the Maps app in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. These include the introduction of cycling directions that will consist of bike lanes, paths, and roads. Electric vehicle routing is also incoming. Apple also plans on introducing expanding travel guides in the new software releases. The guides will automatically update when new places get added.

On CarPlay, iOS 14 brings background wallpapers for the first time. You can see one of these wallpapers in the screenshots below. It also supports new app types, including parking, electric vehicle charging, and quick food ordering.

How to use the CarPlay Maps interface

To launch Maps, you need only tap on the Maps icon, then let it find your location. From here, you can zoom in and out on the 2D map; change the terrain to a 3D map; or explore and seek directions.

Heading to an area you aren’t really familiar with, or looking for something new to do in an area you’ve been to a number of times? Tap the Destinations button.

CarPlay offers suggestions based on your location. Each icon on the screen represents a different type of venue, including Parking, Gas, Food, Coffee, and the like — tapping one will populate a list of places close to your current GPS location.

If there are places that you visit frequently and you don’t want to have to search for each time, you can mark them as a favorite on your iPhone or iPad for quick and easy access. On your CarPlay system, you can access those favorite locations by tapping on the Heart icon within the Destinations screen to see your list.

How to search for specific locations with Maps and CarPlay

If you are looking for a specific location you can tap on the Destinations button or using the Search engine.

Use Destinations

  1. Tap on the Maps button.
  2. Choose Destinations.

From here, you can choose from your most recent destinations or searches.

Use Search

With the Search tool, you can find a local location by category, Siri, or keyboard.

    Tap on the Maps button.

Choose Search.

Select from the list of categories the place you wish to find.,

How to get directions with CarPlay

Getting directions on CarPlay is exactly the same as searching for locations. However, in this case, you select a route after finding the location you wish to travel.

After finding the location in the Maps app, you can either select the Goicon to begin your journey or change the route on the map (if there are more than one suggestions) and then select the Go icon.

How to get directions with your iPhone

Sometimes, searching for a place or finding an address may be easier from your iPhone. If you have a passenger in the car or are stopped safely in a parking lot, you can search for the information via the phone’s Maps app. (We very much encourage you to not search for things or mess with your phone while driving, however, as that is far from safe.)

Once you’ve selected a destination on your iPhone, it automatically displays on your car’s touchscreen.
