How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

The extremely useful Snap feature — introduced as “Aero Snap” in Windows 7 — is much-improved in Windows 10. Snap Assist, 2×2 snapping, and vertical snap features help make you more productive on the desktop.

On the Windows 10 Technical Preview, “universal apps” run in windows on the desktop. Windows 8’s touch-optimized “Snap” feature is gone for now and is being merged with the desktop Snap feature so the Windows interface is more consistent.

Snap Assist

To snap a desktop window, left-click its window title bar, hold your mouse down, and then drag it to either the left or right edges of your screen. You’ll see a transparent overlay appear, showing you where the window will be placed. Release your mouse button to snap the window there.

You don’t actually have to wait — you can just quickly drag-and-drop a window’s title bar to either edge of your screen to snap it. This part of the process also works on Windows 7 and 8.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

When you snap an app with the mouse on Windows 10, the new “Snap Assist” feature will pop up. Windows will display a thumbnail list of your open windows and let you click one of them. Click one and it will be snapped to the left or right side of the screen. It’s much faster, simpler, and more intuitive than the Snap feature on Windows 7 and 8. If you Snap a window on Windows 7 or 8, Windows will just display the empty space there and wait for you to snap a second app.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

You can also press Windows Key + Left arrow or Windows Key + Right arrow to snap an app to the left or right halves of your screen. For some reason, the Snap Assist feature doesn’t appear when you do this. You have to use the mouse to get that dialog.

Because those new “universal apps” can now run in desktop windows, snapping them now works the same way — this is a change to how Snap worked in Windows 8.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

Vertical Snap

Windows 10 also adds support for vertical window-snapping. Press Windows Key + Up or Windows Key + Down to snap the current app to the top or bottom halves on the screen. Pressing Windows Key + Up a second time will maximize the window, while pressing Windows Key +Down a second time will minimize it.

Note that you can’t do this with the mouse — you need to use the keyboard shortcuts. Dragging a window’s title bar to the top of your screen will just maximize it, while dragging it to the bottom of your screen won’t do anything.

Some universal apps can’t resize very far vertically, so they may not behave well with vertical or 2×2 snapping..

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

2×2 Snap

Snap has now been extended to allow up to four windows snapped at a time in a 2×2 grid. Microsoft is slowly reinventing tiling window managers.

To snap a window in a 2×2 grid with the mouse, drag and drop it into one of the four corners of the screen instead. Drag-and-drop several windows in this way to get your 2×2 grid of open windows.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

You can also use keyboard shortcuts. The Windows Key + Left / Right / Up / Down keyboard shortcuts can be combined to snap a window into a quadrant of your screen. For example, press Windows Key + Left to snap a window into the left half of your screen, then press Windows Key + Up to snap it into the top-left quadrant.

Note that you don’t have to use 2×2 snap — you could use any layout up to 2×2. In other words, you could have one tall window on the left and two short ones on the right. Or, you could have one wide window on top and two narrow ones on the bottom. That’s up to you.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

The Windows 10 Technical Preview is focused on the desktop, so this is the same way you’d snap apps on a tablet or another device with a touch screen — just use your finger to touch the title bar and drag it onto an edge or corner of your screen. Microsoft will focus more on the touch interface as they continue developing Windows 10, so the touch interface in particular may change.

You should not confuse the new snap feature of Windows 8 with the Aero Snap feature that Microsoft introduced under Windows 7. Aero Snap back then allowed users to snap windows to the left or right side of the monitor where they’d resize to take up exactly half of the available screen estate. It was furthermore possible to move a window to the top to maximize it.

Snap in Windows 8 on the other hand refers to a feature in Windows 8’s new Metro user interface. When enabled it allows users to run and display more than one program in the Metro interface. To be precise, it can be used to display two program windows in the interface instead of just one.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

Snap is however only enabled if the computer monitor resolution is 1366×768 or higher. Users who run a lower resolution won’t be able to make use of Snap on Windows 8.

It is however relatively easy to enable Snap on Windows 8 thanks to a Registry key that’s being used by Windows to determine whether the feature is enabled or disabled.

To enable Windows Snap do the following:

  • Open the Windows Registry editor. You can do that with the hotkey Windows-r, typing regedit in the run box and hitting enter afterwards. This may trigger an UAC prompt.
  • Navigate to the Registry key HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\AppPositioner\
  • Right-click in the right pane and select New > Dword (32-bit) from the context menu.
  • Name the new key AlwaysEnableLSSnapping and enter 1 in the Value data field.
  • Click ok and restart the computer aftwards.

You should be able to display two program windows side by side in the Windows 8 user interface.

Users who do not want to edit the Registry manually can download a software like Windows 8 Snap Enabler which is a two button software that can enable or disable the snap feature of Windows 8. (via)

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

Okomiti otvor

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

2 × 2 Snap

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

WELL,I HAVE THIS PROBLEM SINCE WINDOWS 7 AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD NOT BE IN WIN 10 BUT MAN THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS.THE PROBLEM IS WHILE SNAPPING TWO SIMILAR APPS LIKE OFFICE EXCEL OF 2 DIFFERENT FILES THE SNAP WOULD ALWAYS ARRANGE THE WINDOWS IN THE SAME PORTION OF THE SCREEN THUS IT IS USELESS COME ON MICROSOFT REACT FIRST AND GIVE ME A FIX FOR THIS

Snap Layout is one of the stellar features of Windows 11. When you open a bunch of windows across various applications, Windows 11 lets you organize all of them on the screen based on different layouts, which are then saved in a particular arrangement. This way you get more available space on your screen to maximize your multitasking capabilities.

For those looking to achieve a Snap Layout experience like Windows 11 in Windows 10, you can utilize Windows 10’s built-in functionalities which support similar navigation. Here we show the various methods to achieve this.

What is Snap Layout in Windows 11?

Windows 11 Snap Layouts are a set of predefined templates that arrange the application windows on the screen based on your choice from a “Snap Navigator.” This navigation feature immediately springs into view while you’re hovering the mouse around the Maximize button.

Furthermore, the selected arrangement of windows in Snap Layout view can be minimized and restored as a “Snap Group” from the taskbar.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

Currently, there are six types of layouts in which you can snap the windows:

  • 50:50 layout of two equally sized windows
  • 80:20 layout includes a major and minor window screen
  • Three-column equal layout requires a laptop/computer screen which is fully HD-compliant at 1080p (1920×1080).
  • 50:25:25 layout for three window screens
  • 25:25:25:25 layout is useful for multitasking with four open windows.
  • Three-column unequal layout.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

In Windows 11, there is a “Multitasking” Settings page where you can customize what happens when two or more windows are snapped. The same functionality exists in Windows 10. (See the section on snapping with Snap Assist.)

How to Use Snap Layout in Windows 10

There is a Snap Layout feature in Windows 10 as well, which may not feel as easy and intuitive as Windows 11 but gives very similar results. There are three ways to achieve the snapping of windows in Windows 10: your mouse, keyboard shortcut keys, and Snap Assist.

1. Snap with Your Mouse

Snapping with the mouse is very easy on Windows 10. You just need to select the title bar of any application window and drag it all the way to the corners of your screen. When you release the pointer, it will be snapped in that position.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

You can arrange multiple application windows side by side and resize them as per your needs. While the mouse method is manual and slightly more time consuming, it is quite an efficient method for those who want more space utilization of their available screens.

2. Snap with Shortcut Keys

If you want an automatic snapping feel in Windows 10 with equally-sized windows, it’s better to use the keyboard shortcut keys: Win + Arrow Keys . Go to the open window first, use the keyboard shortcut and it will automatically fix the program windows.

In the following example for the Command prompt window, the “left” arrow key was used along with the Win key. This got the Command prompt into the left corner, occupying nearly a quarter of the screen.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

Another example below shows the snapping of the Microsoft Edge browser window into the right corner of the screen. For this, the “right” arrow key was used along with the Win key. The other application windows are neatly arranged in a scrollable grid layout.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

3. Snap with Snap Assist

Windows 10 has a dedicated “Snap Assist” feature, which controls how you want the windows to be split. It can be accessed from “Snap settings” system settings in the Search box. A similar feature exists in Windows 11 under “Multitasking,” which you can search in the same manner.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

Turn the “Snap windows” on for enabling the snapping functionality in Windows 10. Also enable the other options, such as the automatic sizing of available space and the simultaneous resizing of adjacent snapped windows.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

Now you just have to click the thumbnail of the window you want snapped using Snap Assist. It will be fixed in a corner. The other windows will be neatly resized besides the first one so that there is no empty space remaining.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

While Windows 11 greatly enhances it, the “snapping” functionality has been around since Windows 7. Although it isn’t exactly the same as Windows 11, there are many benefits in using the Snap Layout feature in Windows 10.

Don’t have multiple monitors but want to have multiple views of the apps opened on your desktop? Windows 10 Snap Assist feature lets you do just that in a snap. More accurately, you can have multiple screen views in a mouse click, a tap on the screen or use arrow keys.

What is Windows 10 Snap Assist?

This is a program that uses snapping technology. The feature was introduced in Windows 7 as Aero Snap and as a touch-optimized Snap feature in Windows 8. It was carried on to Windows 10 with plenty of improvements. You now get Snap Assist, 2×2 Snap, and Vertical Snaps.

Windows 10 Snap Assist will make you more productive on a desktop even with a single monitor. You can get a full view of multiple applications, although some may be smaller than others until you bring it up to a bigger view. It’s like splitting your screen into several screens.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

How to Use Windows 10 Snap Assist

See that the Snap feature is enabled

By default, Snap is enabled but it’s best to check that all features are ON, including those under Virtual desktops. To check, go to Settings > Multitasking > Snap.

Make sure the following features are set to ON:

  • Arrange windows automatically by dragging them to the sides or corners of the screen
  • When I snap a window, automatically size it to fill available space
  • When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

2×2 Snap

Windows 10 Snap Assist lets you use the four quadrants of your screen to view four apps at the same time. To do this, simply drag the title bar to either the left or right edge of your screen until you see a transparent overlay appears. Release the mouse and the window will snap into place. Do the rest for the other three apps to arrange them in quadrants.

How to use snap assist and 2×2 snap on windows 10

If your laptop has a touchscreen interface, you can snap apps with a tap and drag of your finger.

Using a keyboard, however, may be the quickest way to go about snapping an app to a specific quadrant. Simply press…

    • Windows Key + Left arrow key + Up arrow key – Snaps an app to the upper left side of the screen.
    • Windows Key + Left arrow key + Down arrow key – Snaps an app to the bottom left side of the screen.
    • Windows Key + Right arrow key + Up arrow key – Snaps an app to the top right side of the screen.
    • Windows Key + Right arrow key + Down arrow key – Snaps an app to the bottom right side of the screen.

Make sure not to interchange the arrow keys as this will have a different effect.

If there are more than four apps open, the remaining windows will automatically snap themselves to an unused quadrant, unless you specify which window you want to view on all four quadrants.

To ensure that the app you want snapped is the right one, you will need to click on it and snap. The same is true with the other windows, unless you don’t mind them displayed in smaller sizes.

Windows 10 Snap Assist or Horizontal Window-Snapping

If you have more than four apps opened, they will automatically snap themselves in unused quadrants once you’ve snapped one or two apps in specific areas. The four quadrants remain the default sections, but one quadrant may contain one or more apps, depending on the number of apps opened.

To use a keyboard to snap multiple apps in one screen. Simply press…

    • Windows Key + Left arrow – Snaps an app to the left half of your screen. The rest of the opened app will automatically arrange itself on the other half.
    • Windows Key + Right arrow – Snap an app on the right half and expect the same thing to happen with the rest of the apps.

Vertical Window-Snapping

As the name suggests, vertical snap puts two opened apps one on top of the other. You’ll have to use your keyboard for this trick. Simply Press…

    • Windows Key + Up – Snaps an app to the top half of the screen
    • Windows Key + Down – Snaps an app to the bottom half of the screen

Take note that not all universal apps will respond to vertical window-snapping. In some cases, using the keyboard commands above will only maximize or minimize the windows, respectively.

Windows 10 Snap Assist & Virtual Desktop

If you press Task View, you will find a button (+) for adding a New Desktop, where you can snap more apps that you want to use. Once that’s done, clicking on the Task View once again will show you all your desktops, including the virtual one you’ve made complete with the snapped apps.

This makes it easier to switch from one desktop to another for a quick view of your apps. You also get to view the progress of any of your apps, in a mouse click.

Atkreipkite dėmesį, kad negalite to padaryti naudodami pelę – reikia naudoti sparčiuosius klavišus. Vilkdami lango antraštės juostą į ekrano viršuje bus tik padidinta, o vilkdami jį į ekrano apačią, nieko nedarys.

Kai kurios universalios programos negali keisti dydžio labai vertikaliai, todėl jos gali netinkamai elgtis su vertikaliais arba 2 × 2 spragtelėjimais ..

2 x 2 Snap
