How to use the reminders feature in google calendar

Having too many Google Calendar reminders can quickly become annoying, clogging up your email inbox and resulting in a succession of auto-generated text messages. However, disabling reminders altogether can leave you at risk of missing important commitments. You can avoid these problems by using hidden reminders, which are pop-up reminders that only trigger when you are on the Google Calendar page itself. Hidden reminders keep your email and text inboxes reminder-free, and can be stopped by simply closing the Google Calendar window. Google Calendar allows you to set hidden reminders for all existing events as well as new calendar items.

1 Create a New Reminder

2 Sign in to the Google Calendar service

Sign in to the Google Calendar service and then click on the “Create” button.

3 Enter a name

Enter a name for the event into the “Untitled Event” field, and add a date and time into the date field below.

4 Click Add A Reminder

Click “Add A Reminder” and then select “Pop-Up” from the first Reminders drop-down menu.

5 Select either Minutes

Select either “Minutes,” “Hours,” “Days” or “Weeks” from the second Reminders drop-down menu, and then enter a value into the corresponding text box. This value dictates how long before the event the reminder will trigger.

6 Click Save to save your changes

Click “Save” to save your changes and return to the calendar.

7 Set Reminders for Existing Events

8 Click on the gear icon

Click on the gear icon and then select “Settings” from the drop-down menu. Click on the “Calendars” tab to open the Calendar Settings page.

9 Click Reminders and Notifications

Click “Reminders and Notifications” and then select “Add a Reminder” from the Event Reminders section of the page.

10 Select

Select “Pop-Up” from the first drop-down menu and then enter when you want the reminder to trigger using the second pop-up menu.

11 Uncheck

Uncheck all the boxes in both the Email and SMS columns of the “Choose How You Would Like To Be Notified” section of the menu. This stops Google Calendar from sending you email or SMS notifications alongside the pop-up notification.

12 Click Save to confirm your changes

Click “Save” to confirm your changes. All your existing calendar events will now give pop-up reminders.

  • You can set multiple reminders for individual events. For example, you might choose to be reminded two days before an event and then reminded again one hour before. Select the event you want to edit and then click “Add a Reminder” to set up additional reminders.

Some folks don’t have the entire Apple ecosystem. iPad is arguably one of the most popular tablets around (if not the most popular), but many iPad users don’t use iPhone — they’re on Android, and that’s OK. I run Android, but I use an iPad for mobile gaming and reading digital comics.

Syncing between the two platforms isn’t inherent, but you can sync Reminders and lists with certain apps. That way the whole family can stay on the same page, no matter which operating system each person prefers.

How to sync reminders and calendars between iPad and Android

Use the Google Calendar app. It’s absolutely the best way to sync reminders and calendars across both platforms. When you use Google Assistant on your Android phone, the reminder is automatically added to the Reminders calendar in Google Calendar. Even if you don’t have Assistant, using Google Calendar for reminders is the perfect way to see all of your to-dos, whether they be simple, menial things or upcoming events.

Download the Google Calendar app for iOS, sign in with your Google account, and boom – reminders and events are automatically synced.

The unfortunate aspect of this process is the lack of support for Siri if you’re going the other way. If you have an Android tablet and want to sync reminders from iPhone, you won’t be able to sync your reminders from the Reminders app. You could sync over your Calendar app events by subscribing to your calendar’s URL in Google Calendar, but that’s not always best, since events can take up to 24 hours to show up in your Google Calendar.

Apple does let you sync Reminders with other accounts, but your options are pretty much everything but Google (who’da thunk?!).

If you want to sync reminders and calendars between iOS and Android, just use the Google Calendar app for everything. All you have to do is sign in and it’s all there. You may have to mess with your sync settings, but that’s about it. That’s the price we pay for walking in both worlds. C’est la vie.

There are other Android apps that help with syncing, but many are quite hit and miss and some of the more popular ones, like SmoothSync, haven’t been updated in years.

How to add events and reminders to Google Calendar for iPhone and iPad

Adding events and reminders to Google Calendar is pretty much the same as adding them to any other calendar app.

  1. Launch Google Calendar from your Home screen.
  2. Tap the switch next to an account if you already use Google accounts on your iPhone or iPad. Otherwise, tap Add a Google account and sign in.

Tap Get Started. Google Calendar will load all existing events for that account.

Tap the date to scroll and change it. You can set the time as well or tap the switch to make it an all-day event.

You can then add a location to your event or reminder, as well as notifications, and you can change its color, and add notes and attachments.

Setting Up a Reminder

In this example we’ll be showing off the Reminders feature in iOS, however all the instructions also carry over to the Android platform on a nearly 1:1 basis.

To start, you’ll need to already have the Google Calendar app installed on your phone. Unfortunately for the time being the Reminders feature is only available in the mobile app, and if you want to set a Reminder from your desktop PC or Mac, it will have to be set on the app first, at which point you can view it on the desktop app, although it will only appear as a small red bar in between your other regular calendar entries.

To create a reminder, start by entering into the Google Calendar app. Once here, you’ll see a small red “+” icon in the bottom right-hand corner.

Tap this, and you’ll see a small set of text pop up, one asking if you want to create a new calendar app, and the other asking if you want to create a new Reminder.

Choose the “Reminder” option, and you’ll be taken to the following screen:

From here, you’ll see a number of suggestions for different reminders that you can either quickly tap to set up, or start typing in your own.

Like any other Google product, the company has attempted to make things easier with an auto-complete function, which will attempt to guess the reminder you’re trying to set up before it’s fully typed in (i.e – Set up a reservation “for dinner on Saturday”). From this page is also where you’ll be able to edit how often the reminder is repeated, whether it’s once every hour, day, week, or month.

Once you type in the Reminder you want to run, simply select a time, and you’re done! Now when the clock strikes, your phone will send a notification reminding you about whatever it was you had set up in the first place.

Managing Your Reminders

If you want to edit a Reminder that’s already been set up, you can do so by zooming out to your full calendar, and tapping on the Reminder you want to change. Once here, tap the small icon with a pencil in the top left corner, at which point you’ll be taken to the same screen you used to originally create the Reminder, and you can alter the details accordingly.

You can also turn Reminders on or off if you’d prefer them not to show up in your Calendar, in case the feature becomes too intrusive or annoying during your daily activities.

Setting up a Reminder in Google Calendar

To start, you would require having the Google Calendar application installed on your Android mobile phone. Unfortunately, for the time being the Reminders feature would only be available in the mobile app since this is a new found application. If you want to set a Reminder from your desktop PC or Mac, it will have to be set first on the application, at which point you can observe it on the desktop app, the application will appear as a small red bar in sandwiched between your additional regular calendar entries.

“Remind me to…” emerges with a listing beneath it of common things, like to make a call, email, text message, read, check in, make bookings, and others. You can select one of these alternatives, or you can put in or set your personal reminder. When you begin typing in the text arena, hints appear.

The suggestion derives from reminders, which other individuals have inserted, in addition to your contact record, items on your chart, and other places.

How to Manage your Reminders in Google Calendar

If you wish to edit a Reminder, which is already been framed up, you can perform so by opening your complete calendar, and pressing the Reminder you wish to modify.   • In Calendar, click on the day that you want to create a reminder for.
  • Then, click Reminder at the top of the pop up box. Here, you can enter in your reminder (for example, pick up snacks for staff meeting).

  • The reminder is set for the time that you clicked in your calendar, but you can also choose to make it an all-day reminder by selecting the “All day” check box instead. If your reminder is something you need to do on a regular basis, like hit the gym, you can check the “Repeat” box.
  • You can specify how often the event should repeat, and how it should end (e.g., never, after a certain number of occurrences, or on a specific date).

Finished your task? Mark it as done:

  • When you’re completed your task, just select the reminder in your calendar and click “Mark as done.” It will then show up in the top of the day that you completed the reminder, regardless of what day it was originally scheduled for.

Reminders will sync:

The reminder system runs throughout Google’s ecosystem, and reminders sync between Google Keep, Inbox, and Calendar. The same type of syncing will take place between your mobile and desktop versions of Calendar.

How to disable reminders:

If you don’t want to see reminders anymore, head to the left side of your screen in Calendars. Under “My calendars,” deselect Reminders. Also, if you’re not seeing reminders that you’ve set up, make sure you don’t have a tasks calendar under this list. You can only view the older tasks or the new reminder system (not both), so if you see a task calendar here just click the dropdown arrow to change it to the reminder system instead.

Calendar apps are designed to simplify the act of organizing your life, and Google Calendar is no exception.

Google Calendar can help you stay organized both at home and on the go through reminders. Reminders are different from events in that they take up very little visual space on your calendar, and don’t last for an extended amount of time.

How to add reminders to Google Calendar using a computer

1. Open Google Calendar on your desktop or laptop computer.

2. Look at the bottom-left corner of your screen, underneath “My Calendars.” The “Reminders” field should have a check mark next to it.

3. Move your cursor over to the date and time for which you’d like to set a reminder; for example, Thursday at 2pm. Click on this spot. (You can also create a reminder by clicking the “+ Create” button in the top left corner of the screen; you’d just have to manually set the date and time instead.)

4. In the pop-up box, click on “Reminder” and type in a title for your reminder. Then, adjust the time and date as needed, and choose how frequently you want to be reminded.

5. When you’re finished adjusting the details of your reminder, click the blue “Save” button.

How to add reminders to Google Calendar using a mobile device

1. Open the Google Calendar app on your mobile device.

2. Tap the menu icon in the top-left corner (resembling three horizontal lines) to open the sidebar.

3. Make sure that the “Reminders” field has a check mark next to it. Tap outside of the sidebar when you’re done checking.

4. Tap the “+” button, then tap the icon next to “Reminder.”

5. Type in a title for the reminder. Then, set the time and date, and choose how frequently you want to be reminded.

6. When you’re finished adjusting the details of your reminder, tap “Save.”

Google Now’s Reminders feature is powerful. You can set reminders for specific times, events like TV shows, and even have reminders go off when you visit specific locations. Time-based reminders can be recurring, popping up on a schedule.

These features are all available in Google Now for Android as well as the Google search app on iPhone and iPad. Reminders sync between your devices and should hopefully be available on the desktop when Chrome gains Google Now integration.

Set Your Own Reminders

Google Now allows you to quickly set reminders. You can tell Google Now to remind you about something later in the day or even months from now. These reminders occupy a space somewhere between alarms and calendar events. When it’s time for the reminder, you’ll get a notification pop-up.

To set a reminder, just open Google Now, say “Okay Google” and say something like “remind me to feed the dog tonight.” You can customize the reminder when it pops up. If you don’t want to speak, you can also type in “remind me” and tap Enter to bring up the reminder entry field. You can also set recurring reminders, like “remind me to take out the garbage every Wednesday night.”

You can also do this from your browser. On the Google website, perform a search for “remind me” and the form will pop up. You can also set a more specific reminder by typing the same sort of “remind me to [do something] at [time]” phrase into the Google website.

Subscribe to Event Reminders

Google Now can also remind you before certain events occur. For example, let’s say you really like watching Game of Thrones and don’t want to miss an upcoming episode. Just perform a search for Game of Thrones on Google and click the Remind me button. Google will inform you when a new episode airs so you won’t have to keep track of it on your own.

This also works with other events, like holidays. For example, Google Now can inform you before a holiday occurs, if you like. It can also keep you update with news about your favorite musical artists in the same way — search for them and click the Keep me updated button. In the future, Google Now will hopefully offer many other types of event reminders.

Note that TV show, holiday, and artist reminders currently seem limited to Google.com. If you live outside the US, you can probably access them by visiting Google.com — visit your country-specific Google homepage and click Google.com at the bottom to access Google.com and search there.

Create Reminders For Places

Google also allows you to create reminders for places using geofencing. Google Now already tracks your location, so it can display useful location-specific information, like the optimal route you should take to drive home and or the schedule for a bus stop you’re standing near.

Using this feature, you can set reminders for specific places. When you arrive at the place, Google Now will ping you with a reminder. For example, you can set a reminder to buy milk when you arrive at the grocery store you typically shop at. If you want to do something — or just remember something — the next time you arrive at a specific place, all you have to do is set a reminder for it. This is easy — when creating a reminder the normal way, just select “Where” and enter a place instead of selecting “When” and entering a time.

This also works with a search — just search “remind me to [do something] at [location]”. The reminder will appear when you get to the location. Google Now is smart enough to guess a nearby location, so if you say “remind me to buy milk at [grocery store chain]”, Google Now will use the closest location for that specific grocery store.

Manage Reminders

To manage your reminders on Android, open Google Now and tap the hand-with-ribbon icon at the bottom-left corner. On Apple iOS, tap the menu button that looks like a … and tap Reminders instead. You’ll see all your upcoming and ongoing reminders and you can choose to remove them, if you like.

If you’re using the Google Experience Launcher for Android, you can also just say “Okay Google” at your home screen to set a reminder using voice commands or get to Google Now with a quick swipe to the left.
