What Data Does Sleep Tracking Monitor?

It’s not clear yet what specific data will be monitored by the sleep tracking feature on watchOS 7. However, Apple has revealed that it will use machine learning to monitor your sleep motion from the wrist.

Further, it will keep track of micromovements, such as the rise and fall of your breath, to assess the quality of your sleep. The focus will be on promoting better sleep hygiene rather than merely providing data insights.

How to Activate Sleep Tracking in watchOS 7?

Apple is introducing a new Sleep App in watchOS 7 that you can use to activate sleep tracking on your Apple Watch.

You can plan out your sleep and use your Apple Watch to monitor your sleep cycles. This can help you create routines to achieve your sleep goals.

  1. On your Apple Watch, open the Sleep App and you set your first schedule. You can choose to monitor sleep every day or only on specific days of the week. How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking
  2. You can then set your Wakeup Time and choose to Set An Alarm or have no alarm
  3. Then, you can set your target Bedtime and tap Next to finalize. How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking
  4. You can repeat the process to set other sleep schedules as required. For instance, if you want to sleep for different hours on weekends and weekdays
  5. When enabled, Sleep Tracking will automatically turn on Do Not Disturb before your bedtime and help you get in a relaxed frame of mind with Wind Down.

What is Wind Down Mode?

How Does Wind Down work?

1. Wind Down Screen

2. Do Not Disturb

Wind Down will turn on Do Not Disturb on your iPhone and prevent your screen from lighting up with notifications. This will help you stay away from any distractions so you can calm down and relax as you prepare for bed.

3. Wind Down Shortcuts

On the Wind Down screen, you will see suggested apps to help you relax, such as your favorite meditation app or Music. This can help soothe your mind and get you in the ideal relaxed state for sound sleep.

4. Apple Watch Sleep Mode

Lastly, just like your iPhone, your Apple Watch screen will also dim and enter Sleep Mode. This means the display will be turned off, and when tapped, a sleep timer will appear.

As for waking up the next morning, you can set a gentle alarm or even choose to be woken with the haptic touch that will buzz you awake without disturbing anyone else in the room.

You will rise to see a greeting on your watch screen along with an indication of the battery level so that you can remember to charge it if needed.

Note: If your Apple Watch battery is running too low an hour ahead of bedtime, ‌you will be reminded to charge it for uninterrupted sleep tracking.

Where to Find Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Data?

When you wake up in the morning, you will see a visualization of your night’s slumber, including periods of wake and sleep. You will also see a chart showing your weekly sleep trend.

This data will be integrated into a new Sleep section on the Health app on your iPhone.

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

The Apple Watch only gained the ability to track sleep natively with watchOS 7. True to form, Apple’s take on sleep monitoring is different to nearly every other wearable out there.

Yes, it’s far more simplistic. But there’s still a lot to like, and some unique benefits to using the Apple Watch to watch over your rest.

We’ve been living with it for a number of months – here’s everything we’ve learned and you need to know about the Apple Watch and sleep tracking.

If you’re looking for more traditional sleep tracking, there are plenty of third party Apple Watch sleep apps that will offer something akin to Fitbit – check out our complete guide.

How does it work?

In direct comparison to the likes of Fitbit, Withings and other wearables, Apple’s sleep tracking is undeniably basic.

There’s no sleep stage tracking of REM, deep and light cycles, nor is there in-depth analysis of how long it took you to drop off. Why? Because Apple says that stuff isn’t really directly improvable by users, thus not useful to know – and it has a point.

The Apple Watch therefore focuses on the tracking of sleep duration, and behaviors you can control for a better night’s sleep. That included consistent bedtime and wake ups, and ironically, spending less time with your devices.

It uses the motion sensors and accelerometer to monitor your rest, and while it does use the heart rate sensor to track blood oxygen and bpm, this isn’t factored into the assessment of your sleep.

That may seem insanely retro – but it works. We’re continually comparing and testing the best sleep trackers, and the Apple Watch is up there with the most accurate devices in terms of tracking sleep duration.

What does it track?

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

When you wear your Apple Watch to bed you’ll see a decent amount of data in the Apple itself. You’ll need to head to Sleep app on the Watch itself.

You’ll see your previous night’s sleep duration, with a small graphic that outlines any wake ups.

You’ll also see a summary of sleep duration and consistency over the past 14 days and, when you’ve got a few nights of sleep under your belt, the Apple Watch will tell you if your sleep duration is increasing, decreasing or consistent.

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

You can also view sleep data in the Health app.

In the Sleep section you can see sleep data by week and month, and cycle back through time. This will also show your average time in bed and time asleep for the period.

The iPhone will also estimate time asleep if you weren’t wearing your Apple Watch based on its usage. However, it stops tracking when your wake time kicks in, which makes the data look a little same-y.

You can also see heart rate during bed time and have a look at your low and high HR.

How to set up a sleep schedule

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

As we mentioned, the primary aim of the Apple Watch is to help you prepare for a good night’s sleep. And for those looking to get more rest, sleep hygiene is one of the most important factors.

While that can be environmental (sleeping in a dark, cool, quiet room) it also means winding down before bed without screen time, and having consistent bed and wake times. And this is a particular focus of the Apple Watch.

The iPhone and Apple Watch both have a feature, which lets you set sleep and wakeup times for each night of the week.

Half an hour before this time your iPhone and Watch go into a pared down Bedtime mode, where the screen dims and notifications are muted so you can start to decompress and chill before bed.

To set this up you need to go to the Health app on iPhone.

How to set up Bedtime for Apple Watch

1. Open the Health app

2. Head to Browse and choose Sleep

3. Scroll down to Full Schedule and then edit, or choose Add Schedule

4. Use the slider to choose your bedtime/wake up pattern which defaults to 8 hours

You can change the goal in the schedule menu under Sleep Goal.

Waking up with Apple Watch

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

Within Bedtime mode you can also change how you’re woken up. The default is to have no alarm, but you can set a silent alarm which rouses you using the Apple Watch’s Taptic engine or a standard audio alarm.

When you edit the Schedule just scroll to the bottom and choose Wake Up Alarm. Toggle this on and then tap Sound & Haptics.

Here you can select a vibrate option and some soothing sounds for an alarm. If you want the haptic only just turn the volume to minimum.

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

Since the release of watchOS 7, Apple Watch users have been able to use their watches to track their sleep with the built-in Sleep feature. There are many sleep tracking apps out there; all with different features. Using a sleep tracking app can give you some pretty useful insights into your sleep. Depending on your sleep concerns, you many find a particular (third-party) app that is suited to addressing your sleep issues. For example, if you snore, there is an app in the App Store called SnoreLab.

Not all of the sleep tracking apps will make use of your Apple Watch, but instead some use your iPhone’s microphone to detect your sleep sounds. In this article, we will go through what the built-in Sleep feature does, some of the things it doesn’t do (that some other sleep apps do) and tell you how to set up Sleep for your Apple Watch.

What you can Do with the Sleep App?

You can use the Sleep app on your Apple Watch to create schedules for your sleep and wake times. Your Apple Watch can track your sleep while you wear it at night. The Sleep app will show you how much sleep you got last night and keep track of your sleep trends.

Sleep Schedules

When you create sleep schedules, you can create separate ones for weekdays and weekends. When you set up a schedule, you can enter the following parameters for that schedule:

  • Bedtime
  • Wake up time
  • Alarm: You can choose to have an alarm wake you up at your preferred wake up time. You can choose the alarm’s sound (tune) and volume along with a snooze option.
  • Sleep Mode: You can choose to enable Sleep Mode which will turn on Do Not Disturb while you sleep.
  • Sleep Tracking: Your Apple Watch will detect your movement to determine when you are sleeping.

Sleep Data

The following data is available to you on your Apple Watch, when you use the Sleep app to track your sleep:

  • When you wake up in the morning, you can open the sleep app on your Apple Watch and see how much sleep you got.
  • You can view your sleep trends for the past 14 days.
  • On your iPhone, you can view graphs of your sleep data a week, or a month at a time.

How to Set Up Sleep Tracking

Although you can set this up on your Apple Watch, like many things, it is easier to do with your iPhone. For that reason we will stick to explaining the setup using an iPhone. The Sleep app replaces the Bedtime feature that was available in the Clock app in previous iOS versions.

If You Haven’t Set Up Sleep on Your iPhone

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Find and tap Get Started under Set Up Sleep. Tap Next.
  3. There will be onscreen prompts for setting up the following:
    • Sleep Goals – How many hours of sleep you would like to get.
    • Bedtime/Wake Up Time.
    • Sleep Mode – Turns on Do Not Disturb and dims the lock screen.
    • Wind Down Shortcuts – Play a scene on the screen, listen to your songs from your favorite relaxing playlist or turn on a meditation app.
    • Apple Watch sleep tracking.

If You Have Already Set Up Sleep on Your iPhone

You may have already set up the Sleep app on your iPhone to schedule bedtimes, or you may need to make changes after you initially set up your sleep tracking.

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to the Browse tab at the bottom of your screen, then select Sleep from the list.

Now that you are on the Sleep page, you can make adjustments to your Sleep settings:

Set Up Sleep on Apple Watch

  1. From the Sleep page, scroll down to Set Up Sleep For Watch and click Get Started.

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

2. Click Enable to allow your Apple Watch to track your sleep and wake you with a silent, haptic alarm.

Adjust your Sleep Goal

From the Sleep page, go to Full Schedule and Options and you’ll find Sleep Goal under Additional Details.

Edit your Sleep Schedule

You can either make an edit just for the next day, or you can edit your full schedule. You can also change your alarm settings when making changes to your sleep schedule.

  • Next Day: From the main Sleep page, at the top, under Your Schedule you’ll see a box titled Next. Tap Edit to make changes for your next wake up.
  • Full Schedule: Tap on Full Schedule & Options and then select Edit under the schedule you would like to update.

Drag the ends of the Bedtime/Wake Up slider to change the Bedtime and Wake Up time.

What you Can’t Do

There are several options for third party sleep apps, and they each have a different set of features. Many of these apps make use of the Apple Watch, but some, like Sleep Cycle, can be used with just your iPhone. The Apple Watch Sleep app is pretty basic and doesn’t give you many details about your sleep. It also doesn’t compile any stats for you to view – which can be useful if you are trying to find patterns and figure out the factors that might be affecting your sleep. Some of the things that other sleep apps can do are:

  • Show you a graph of your sleep stages during the night

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

  • Show you correlations with other data. Many sleep apps include statistics that show you how other factors may be affecting your sleep:
    • Workouts or number of steps
    • Caffeine or alcohol
    • Weather
    • Your location
  • Wake you when you are in a lighter phase of your sleep, using a “smart alarm” so you can wake up gently.

Summary

If you haven’t explored sleep tracking apps on your iPhone or Apple Watch, it could be worth checking out the built-in Sleep app. The Sleep app has some basic tracking features which might be all some users are looking for. Beyond the built-in Sleep app, there are several sleep tracking apps available in the App Store, and many of them offer more features and more detailed sleep tracking and analysis than the built-in Sleep app. Most have a yearly subscription fee, but offer a free trial so you can test out the app before you commit.

Sleep tracking is natively available on all Apple Watches Series 3 and newer. It’s an automatic feature that tracks data when you go to bed while wearing the smartwatch, but you do have to set it up. Here’s how to configure sleep tracking on your Apple Watch.

Although you can set up sleep tracking on your Apple Watch, it’s much easier to do on your iPhone. First, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 14 or higher, and your Apple Watch is running watchOS 7 or higher. If not, the sleep tracking settings won’t be available.

To get started, tap and open the “Health” app on your iPhone. You can swipe down on the Home screen, and then use Spotlight Search to find it if necessary.

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

Next, tap the “Browse” tab, and then tap “Sleep.”

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

You can now schedule your bedtime routine. Having a set schedule helps your Apple Watch start monitoring for sleep activity. It also sets an automatic alarm to wake you in the morning.

Tap “Full Schedule & Options.”

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

In the “Full Schedule” section, tap “Set Your First Schedule.”

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

Choose which days of the week you want to use this schedule. Then, set your “Bedtime” and “Wake Up” times.

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

If you want to fine-tune your alarm, you can do so at the bottom. When you’re finished, tap “Add” at the top right.

You can add as many schedules as you want—just tap “Add Schedule for Other Days” to set more. Most people have one schedule for weekdays, and another for weekends.

When you’re done customizing your schedules, scroll down and set the “Sleep Goal,” “Wind Down,” and “Wind Down Shortcuts” settings. To proceed, tap “Options.”

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

You can then enable any settings you want in the “Sleep Mode” menu. You’ll likely want to toggle-On both the “Turn On Automatically” and “Track Time in Bed with iPhone” options.

After you do this, “Do Not Disturb” will turn on automatically whenever your iPhone is in Sleep Mode. This will mute all incoming notifications when you’re supposed to be sleeping.

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

Finally, scroll down and tap “Manage Sleep in the Apple Watch App.”

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

Enable all the settings you want. Again, you’ll want to toggle-On the “Turn On Automatically” and “Track Sleep with Apple Watch” options.

This will enable “Do Not Disturb” on your Watch and prevent the screen from lighting up while you’re asleep.

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

That’s it! You’ve now enabled sleep tracking on your Apple Watch. Head to bed, and your wearable will take care of everything else.

When you wake up, you can check the average amounts of time you were asleep and in bed in the iPhone “Health” app.

How to use your apple watch for sleep tracking

Unfortunately, the Apple Watch won’t be as accurate as a dedicated sleep-tracking device. However, you can get a rough idea of how well and how much you sleep—just don’t rely on this data if you have a serious medical condition.

Apple WatchOS 7 introduced a sleep tracking feature which lets users track their sleep pattern using Apple Watch . This can be useful for people who have disturbed sleep patterns and want to know more about their sleep cycle so that they can improve it. For other users too, it may help them understand their sleep cycles and quality better.

The sleep tracking feature allows users to create multiple schedules which includes sleep goals, the wake up time and go to bed, and an alarm to wake you up.

Note: Sleep tracking feature is available on Apple Watch Series 3 and above.

Here is how to use the Sleep tracking feature on Apple Watch:

Set up Sleep on Apple Watch

Open Sleep on your Apple Watch> Follow the onscreen instructions.
(You can also do this through the Health App on your iPhone).

Set you bedtime

Tap your current bedtime> Turn the Digital Crown to set a new wake up and sleep time.

The WWDC 2021 keynote is done and dusted, and alongside updates like iOS 15 and macOS 12 Monterey, Apple has also unveiled watchOS 8 for the Apple Watch with new portrait watch faces, mindful app updates, and more. One of the most useful features added in watchOS 8 is the new sleeping respiratory rate tracking on Apple Watch. So, if you are itching to know more about it, we have explained what is sleeping respiratory rate on Apple Watch and how to use it in this article.

Apple Watch Respiratory Rate Tracking

If you are an Apple Watch user, chances are you have been using Apple Watch for sleep tracking already. And it’s pretty good at it. Moreover, you can track your blood oxygen levels, sleep time, and more when you wake up with Apple Watch. Now, you also get respiratory tracking while you sleep. In this article, we will take a look at what exactly is respiratory tracking, how respiratory tracking is different from SpO2 monitoring, how to use it, and more.

As always, you can use the table of contents to jump between sections as you like.

What is Respiratory Rate on Apple Watch?

Before we go into any of the details about how to use the feature, let’s first get a basic understanding of what respiratory rate tracking on the Apple Watch means. Right now, with watchOS 7, your Apple Watch keeps track of things like your heart rate, blood oxygen level, and time asleep during bedtime.

The respiratory rate tracking feature in watchOS 8 tells the number of breaths you take per minute while you are asleep.

With watchOS 8, all compatible Apple Watches will also be able to keep track of your sleeping respiratory rate. Your sleeping respiratory rate is essentially the number of breaths you are taking per minute while asleep. This number is typically higher when your body requires more oxygen, such as while exercising, and lower when you are resting, especially while you are asleep.

How is Respiratory Rate Different from SpO2?

At this point, you may be wondering what the difference is between SpO2 values that the Apple Watch Series 6 can track and this new sleeping respiratory rate on Apple Watch. To put it in simple terms, SpO2 is a measurement of concentration, while respiratory rate is a measure of, well, the rate at which you breathe. Here’s what this means.

SpO2 values shown by your Apple Watch describe the saturation (or concentration) of oxygen in your blood. A higher value is better because that means your blood is more efficiently able to transport oxygen to your muscles and organs. A lower value, especially if it’s too low, is usually a mark of a medical issue, and we recommend that you visit a doctor to understand what may be wrong.

On the other hand, the respiratory rate shown by your Apple Watch is simply the number of breaths you take per minute. On average, an adult takes somewhere between 12-20 breaths per minute when awake but not exerting themselves. This number goes higher when you are exercising and usually goes lower while you are asleep.

How to Use Sleeping Respiratory Rate Tracking on Apple Watch?

Well, after reading all that, if you are wondering how to use sleeping respiratory rate tracking on Apple Watch, here’s how to do just that.

  • Make sure you have sleep tracking enabled on your Apple Watch. If you don’t, you can check out our article on how to enable sleep detection on Apple Watch.
  • You will also need to update your iPhone to iOS 15 and update Apple Watch to watchOS 8 to get the feature. By the way, if you are not a developer, you can still update iPhone to iOS 15 without a developer account as well.
  • Now, you just need to ensure that you are wearing your Apple Watch to sleep, and it will start tracking your sleep respiratory rate.

How to Check Sleeping Respiratory Rate?

So we have started tracking our sleeping respiratory rate, but how to see your data? Well, you can do that in the Health app on your iPhone. Just follow the steps below.

  • Open the Health app on your iPhone and tap “Browse” on the bottom navigation bar.
  • Tap on “Respiratory” under Health Categories, followed by “Respiratory Rate” to see your sleeping respiratory rate data.

What are the Benefits of Sleeping Respiratory Rate Tracking?

Now that we know what is sleeping respiratory rate and how to use it, let’s take a look at what benefits it offers us. After all, there has to be a reason to use the feature, right?

As I mentioned above, a human adult takes 12-20 breaths per minute on average while at rest. That number goes up when working out or exerting yourself, and it goes down while sleeping.

However, if your sleeping respiratory rate is higher than normal while you are asleep, it could point to unhealthy lungs. On the other hand, sleep apnoea can result in your breathing at night to stop and start abruptly and repeatedly throughout the night. So keeping track of your sleep respiratory rate can help you ensure that your lungs are healthy.

Keeping track of sleeping respiratory rate on Apple Watch in watchOS 8 can help ensure your lungs are healthy

Plus, since our breathing slows down to deeper breaths at highly regular intervals during deep sleep, and speeds up to shallow, less regular breaths during REM cycles, sleeping respiratory rate tracking can help you identify how much REM sleep and deep sleep you’re getting as well.

Use Respiratory Rate Tracking on Apple Watch

The new sleeping respiratory rate tracking on Apple Watch is a useful new feature added to Apple Watches. Since the feature is available with watchOS 8, it should be available on Apple Watch Series 3, Series 4, Series 5, SE, and Series 6. Plus, the upcoming Apple Watch Series 7 will obviously get it when it launches in the fall later this year. So, have you started using Apple Watch’s new respiratory rate tracking feature yet? How has your experience been? Let us know in the comments.

Apple Watches are great for tracking your fitness and activity levels, but many people don’t know that the watch can also track sleep. This blog post will tell you how the Apple Watch works to monitor your sleep patterns. Sleep has always been important for our mental health, physical well-being, and overall quality of life, however, it has come more to the fore over recent years. Sleep problems affect over 50 million people every year with serious consequences on their health. But did you know? Apple Watches have a built-in technology that monitors your heart rate throughout the night as well as when you’re awake so it’s easier than ever to understand what affects your sleep quality!

With Apple’s watchOS 7, Apple has made available the ability to track your sleep. The feature works with all Apple Watches from Series 3 onwards and it is anticipated to work with all future watches in the same way. It is worth noting that sadly the feature is not compatible with either the first or second generation of Apple Watch.

The feeling that Apple would release software to track sleep was much anticipated although the feature has been widely available using 3rd party apps Apple has now enabled this feature natively within its own watchOS7.

So, How Does The Apple Watch Track Sleep?

The Apple Watch uses its sensors to detect physical movement; the app uses this information to then decide if you are awake, or asleep, it’s really that simple. This does however mean that for the feature to work, you need to wear your Apple Watch overnight. This brings with it a need to alter our charging habits. Most of us are used to charging devices overnight but to utilise the sleep tracking feature, you’ll need to change to a routine of charging the Apple Watch in a period of inactivity.

Fortunately, they are conveniently charged and this may be as simple as charging it in the evening when you are doing other things. With the sleep tracking feature enabled, if you do go to bed with a battery percentage below 30, the watch can notify you it needs charging.

Once you have enabled sleep tracking, it stays active unless you disable it.

Apple Watch Sleep Tracking – The Importance Of Battery Life

With battery life being an important factor for the feature to work successfully, the later the series of Apple Watch the better performance you’ll see. From tests, we’ve seen that all but older Series 3 models have sufficient battery life to last through the night on partial charge. With the Series 3, it may be wise to top up the charge before bedtime – the lower battery performance is down to a combination of factors such as; age of the device and better technology in newer models.

Whilst in sleep mode unlocking the Apple Watch requires you to twist the digital crown – as you would when leaving a swimming pool. Sleep mode can be disabled but you will lose the ability to track your sleep. You can also set the watch to not track your sleep but keep sleep mode enabled in the options.
