Controlling your smart thermostat remotely from your phone is cool and all, but don’t forget that you can also make it even easier on yourself and control it with your voice using Alexa. Here’s how to set it up.

Before you get started, it would be a good idea to learn how to add Alexa skills to your Alexa account, as well as add smarthome devices to your Alexa setup. Once you’re familiar with doing both of these things, this guide will be a breeze. Let’s get started!

Install the Ecobee Alexa Skills

Yes, you read that right—skills, with an “s”. There are multiple Alexa skills for the Ecobee thermostats (two to be exact). You really only need the newer one, but the older one still has its advantages, and I’ll talk more about that further below.

Open the Alexa app and tap on the menu button up in the top-left corner of the screen.

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

Select “Skills” from the list.

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

Tap on the search bar, enter in “ecobee”, and hit Enter on the keyboard.

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

You should see two Alexa skills, one called “Ecobee” and the other called “Ecobee Plus”. As mentioned above, you really only need the latter skill, but in order to provide basic voice commands without saying “Alexa, ask Ecobee…”, then you’ll want the former Alexa skill as well—both can be installed and coexist peacefully.

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

Tap on one and hit “Enable”.

Sign into your Ecobee account.

Hit “Accept” at the bottom.

After that, close it all out by hitting “Done” or the X button.

You’re good to go from there and can move onto the next step!

Add Your Ecobee Thermostat to Alexa

Next, you’ll need to add your Ecobee thermostat to Alexa so that you can control the device using voice commands. From within the menu in the Alexa app, tap “Smart Home”.

Tap on “Discover”. You might have to scroll down to get to it if you already have some smarthome devices added.

Give the app a few seconds to look for devices. Afterward, your Ecobee thermostat should appear in the list.

Voice Commands You Can Use

If you install the newer Ecobee Plus skill, you can say a whole lot of commands to Alexa in order to control your Ecobee thermostat, whereas the plain Ecobee Alexa skill only lets you set the temperature and find out what the temperature is (or what the thermostat is set to). However, this skill does allow you to forgo saying “ask Ecobee”, so all you’d have to say is “Alexa, set the thermostat to 75”.

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

With the newer Ecobee Plus skill, you have to add “ask Ecobee” in front of your voice commands, so it would be “Alexa, ask Ecobee to set the thermostat to 75”. It’s kind of annoying, so it would be wise to install the other skill as well.

However, the newer skill allows you to do a lot of cool things. Here are some examples you might consider using with your own Ecobee:

  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee to set the thermostat to home mode.”
  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee to resume the schedule.” or “”Alexa, ask Ecobee to cancel hold.”
  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee if the heating is enabled.”
  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee if the dehumidifier is running.”
  • “Alexa, ask Ecobee to turn the fan on.”
  • “Alexa, ask ecobee to set a vacation from tomorrow to next Wednesday.”

This is definitely an improvement over the older Ecobee Alexa skill, and it pretty much gives you the ability to play with frequent controls using your voice rather than having to use the app all the time for some things.

ecobee Thermostats 101

ecobee is a Canadian smart home company known for its smart thermostats and temperature sensors.

But ecobee doesn’t just make top-notch hardware. Its software platforms are diverse and well-designed too.

For instance, ecobee users have four options for controlling their smart thermostat:

  1. The device’s touchscreen
  2. A web portal
  3. The ecobee app
  4. And even an Apple Watch app

Needless to say, this is better than 90% of the smart home market.

Smart Thermostats Pay For Themselves

Beyond voice control, smart thermostats’ biggest draws are the energy and cost savings you can achieve.

According to ecobee, its AI-based temperature regulation can reduce a user’s energy costs by up to 23% per year.

If your heating and cooling bill is $54 or more per month, a 23% savings means that an ecobee3 lite would pay for itself within a year.

If this weren’t enough, your purchase might also qualify for a rebate from your energy company. (For example, we received a $100 rebate from PG&E in California when we installed our thermostat.)

Does ecobee Work With Alexa?

The answer to this is a resounding yes. All recent models, including the ecobee3 lite and the ecobee4, work with Alexa.

In fact, when it comes to smart home compatibility, ecobee shines across the board. Their devices work with all of the leading platforms and voice assistants, namely:

  • Amazon (Alexa)
  • Google Home (Google Assistant)
  • Apple HomeKit (Siri)
  • Samsung SmartThings (Bixby)

In fact, the premium model (the ecobee SmartThermostat Pro) even has Alexa built-in. So you can speak to Alexa directly through your thermostat!

When we reviewed the Ecobee3 in 2015 it earned our Editors’ Choice for its sleek design, numerous features, and ease of use. We also loved the inclusion of a remote sensor to help reduce hot or cold spots in different rooms. We’re happy to report that the new Ecobee4 ($249) boasts all the same features as it predecessor, and more, thanks to the addition of built-in Amazon Alexa voice service capabilities. That means you can have the thermostat do everything that the Amazon Echo and its siblings can, such as control smart devices, shop, play music, and hear the latest news and weather, all using Alexa voice commands. This addition makes it our Editors’ Choice for smart thermostats.

    Design and Features

The Ecobee4 looks very similar to the Ecobee3, but there are subtle differences. It has the same black faceplate and 3.5-inch color touch display, but at 4.2 by 4.2 by 1.0 inches (HWD) it’s a bit larger. It also has an LED strip on its top edge that glows blue when you begin a voice command with “Alexa,” and red when the built-in microphone is turned off. There’s a speaker embedded in the back of the housing. The back plate contains 12 terminal connections for connecting to heating and air conditioning, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, air ventilation devices, and other HVAC accessories.

Under the hood are temperature, humidity, motion, and proximity sensors. The motion and proximity sensors tell the thermostat if you are home or away, allowing it to switch to a preset temperature setting. There’s also 802.11n Wi-Fi circuitry, built-in microphones, and far-field voice recognition technology that allows you to issue Alexa voice commands from across the room. As with the Ecobee3, the Ecobee4 comes with a remote room sensor that communicates with the thermostat to ensure that the temperature in the room where you place it is consistent with the thermostat’s target temperature. If you want to add more sensors you can buy a two-pack for $79.

You can use the thermostat’s touch display, an Android or iOS mobile app, or a web dashboard to set temperatures, create heating and cooling schedules, and adjust comfort settings. The app opens to a home screen that displays the current temperature and a slider for setting the target temperature. When I reviewed the Ecobee3 I found the slider to be a bit too sensitive, but had no such issues with the Ecobee4.

Below the current temperature are four icons, including a Settings icon with tabs for System, where you can enable and disable heating, cooling, and fans; Sensors, where you can enable or disable the Smart Home/Away feature that overrides your heating/cooling schedule if the thermostat senses that nobody is home; and Schedule, which allows you to create daily and weekly heating/cooling schedules. The Comfort Settings menu lets you set temperature thresholds for when you are home and away, and you can set temperatures for when you’re asleep and for when you are on vacation. The Reminders & Alerts menu lets you set up things like low and high temperature alerts, low and high humidity alerts, and maintenance reminders.

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

Tapping the weather icon displays a screen with the current weather conditions along with a five-day forecast. The gear icon opens the Quick Changes screen where you can switch from Home to Away modes (and vice versa) instantly, and the microphone icon takes you to a screen where you can adjust the volume of the speaker and enable or disable the microphone.

As with previous models, the Ecobee4 offers a Home IQ feature, which is only available on the web app. It provides colorful graphs that show you a historical track of HVAC usage and lets you see what the outside temperature was during a specific time to see how it impacted your HVAC system.

The Ecobee4 supports IFTTT applets, which allow it to work with numerous smart home devices. It addition to Alexa voice commands you can control it using Siri voice commands and HomeKit devices.

    Installation and Performance

As with the Ecobee3, the Ecobee4 is relatively easy to install thanks to a highly detailed installation guide, but if you’re not comfortable with handling electrical wiring (even low-voltage wiring), have a professional install the thermostat.

Start by turning off the breaker that controls your thermostat’s power and removing the cover from your old thermostat. Take a picture of the wiring for future reference before disconnecting them from the old thermostat. If you mark the wires with the included labels, the installation will be that much easier. Attach the Ecobee base plate to the wall using the included mounting screws, making sure it is level using the built-in level tool. If your system has a C wire (common wire), attach the wires to their corresponding terminals on the base plate. If you don’t have a C wire, use the included PEK (Power Extender Kit) and follow the wiring instructions in the printed guide. Once wired, snap the thermostat onto the base plate by gently pressing it into place.

Installing the sensor is also easy. When I stood in front of the thermostat and pulled the plastic battery tab from the sensor it was immediately identified and added to the app.

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

The Ecobee4 performed flawlessly in my tests. It reacted instantly to my temperature change commands using the mobile app, the web dashboard, and the touch screen. It followed my daily schedules without missing a beat, and had no trouble following my Alexa and Siri voice commands to adjust temperature settings. A HomeKit scene to have the thermostat switch to Sleep mode and turn on the front porch light worked like a charm, as did my IFTTT applet to set and hold the temperature at 68 when the Weather Underground reported a temperature below 58 degrees. The back bedroom with the remote sensor maintained the exact temperature as the room with the Ecobee4 thermostat, and I received push alerts whenever the temperature or humidity reached a certain threshold.

The Ecobee4 provided full Alexa functionality in my tests, playing music on demand, delivering the latest news and game scores, and controlling other devices including a Haiku fan and Vivint lights, using Alexa skills. My only gripe is that the built-in speaker, while adequately loud, sounds a bit tinny and lacks the bass response I’m used to with my original Amazon Echo.

    Conclusions

You’ll pay more for the Ecobee4 than you will for a traditional non-connected thermostat, but that’s true with nearly all smart devices. And that said, you get your money’s worth with this thermostat, especially if you want to take advantage of Amazon’s Alexa voice service. Even if you don’t, the Ecobee4 offers flexible scheduling, a well-designed mobile app and web interface, remote room sensors, and motion-sensing technology to help save you money when you’re not home. It’s a snap to install and lets you track your energy usage, and it works with a number of third-party smart devices. All this makes the Ecobee4 a shoo-in as our new Editors’ Choice for smart thermostats.

ecobee was founded with the goal of offering people smart home solutions that enable planet positive actions. We’ve made a lot of progress since then, but there’s still more work left to do. We need your help because the more we grow, the greener things get.

To date, ecobee thermostats have delivered over 17.6 TWh of energy savings. That’s like taking all the homes in Las Vegas off the grid or 2.7 million cars off the road for a year.

ecobee believes our technology should be accessible to everyone. That’s why we partner with local housing organizations, cities, and NGOs to find effective ways to put our technology to work in the communities in need. A smart thermostat can mean saving on energy bills to those who need it most, without sacrificing the comfort of home.

    1.ecobee3 Smart Thermostat

Let’s cut to the chase and answer the question that you all want the know: How much will I save by using the Ecobee3 in my home? The answer is that you will approximately save 23% annually on your energy bill! This, also means that the Ecobee3 will pay for itself in the long run! Why can I save so much money on my energy bill with the Ecobee3? Simply answered: because the Ecobee3 is smart! Super smart. It is one of the best home thermostats you can have. Ordinary house thermostats read the temperature in just one room and the whole house gets a temperature based on that one specific room. That obviously is not ideal as it leaves you with important rooms like bedrooms, living rooms or home offices that are not properly heated or cooled enough. The Ecobee3 has a solution for this problem. Ecobee, with the Ecobee3 Thermostat, thought about the question: How to make sure that rooms are properly heated or cooled, depending on whether someone is in a room or not? The Ecobee3 comes with a sensor that works via Wi-Fi. The small wireless sensors can detect if rooms are occupied by people or not and act accordingly. It will provide you with comfort if it detects you are in a room, or it will save you money when you are not by rerouting energy elsewhere, effectively becoming a wireless air conditioner.

    2. Ecobee3 Lite SmartThermostat

The Ecobee3 Lite Thermostat is cheaper than the Ecobee3 version. Ecobee3 Lite is similar to the Ecobee3 regular version, however, the lite version does not have certain features. The lite Ecobee3 does not come with one free sensor included in the price, and also is not compatible with the wireless room sensors at all! The lite version does not have an occupancy sensor and also does not have accessory control. Accessory control means that you can change the humidifier, dehumidifier and ventilator settings.

They’re both great thermostats, but which one is right for you?

    Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control

    Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat

If you’re in the market for a smart thermostat, the Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control and the Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat are two solid options. These app-enabled thermostats offer intuitive technology so adjusting your home’s temperature is a breeze whether you’re at home or hundreds of miles away. While both models share a similar design and basic lineup of features, they’re priced $80 apart.

To find out where the two thermostats diverge — and which one might be best for you — we’re taking a closer look at how the premium Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control compares to the more affordable Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat.

    Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control

The $249 Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control is the company’s most expensive smart thermostat. You can control it on your phone through the Ecobee app, but this model also has a built-in Amazon Alexa speaker. You can use Alexa voice commands to make phone calls, respond to texts and play your favorite music. You can also use the integrated Alexa to control your Ecobee thermostat, any other Alexa-powered devices.

Ecobee’s SmartThermostat with Voice Control also plays well with other smart home ecosystems beyond Alexa. It’s compatible with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, IFTTT and Samsung SmartThings. This model works with Spotify and can pair with a Bluetooth speaker.

This thermostat has built-in temperature and occupancy sensors that automatically adjust your temperature based on whether you’re home or away. Your purchase also includes a remote sensor called a SmartSensor. You can place the sensor in any room of your home, where it can read the ambient temperature and detect occupancy. Like the thermostat itself, the sensor’s Smart Home & Away feature can make temperature adjustment coincide with whether you’re home or away. You can buy additional SmartSensors for $80 (pack of two).

    Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat

If you want a mix of savings and convenience, the Ecobee3 Lite might be the right fit for you. At $169, this thermostat is the most affordable offering from the company.

The company gives you a variety of ways to monitor and make changes to your Ecobee3 Lite. You can control your home’s temperature with a tap, either on the thermostat itself — or through the Ecobee app. It also supports voice control and smart home integrations via Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, Samsung SmartThings and Android and iOS devices like the Apple Watch.

If you plan to go on vacation, you can activate vacation mode to maximize its energy efficiency. The system can help you detect rapid temperature variances, allowing you to react quickly to prevent your pipes from freezing.

The thermostat also gets to know you. Each month, you receive a free energy audit complete with comparisons of your energy usage with others in your area. And with a seven-day scheduling function, the Ecobee3 Lite provides an affordable and convenient way to track your home’s heating and air conditioning. Unlike the SmartThermostat, this one doesn’t have a built-in occupancy sensor. It’s compatible with SmartSensors, but you don’t get one with your purchase.

    Features

The Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control is more advanced than the Ecobee3 Lite. With the SmartThermostat, you receive access to all of the Eco Plus benefits. Those benefits include temperature change recommendations based on your activity, either at the thermostat or in other rooms, when you connect your SmartSensor to the Ecobee app.

If you buy a SmartSensor for the Ecobee3 Lite, you do get some of those same benefits, but this less expensive model doesn’t have an occupancy sensor built into the thermostat. And, while the Ecobee3 Lite works with all of the major smart home platforms, the SmartThermostat has voice control built-in. That hardware integration allows you to make temperature adjustments whenever you need it through a verbal command, without owning a separate Alexa-enabled smart speaker.

The SmartThermostat also works with Spotify — and you can pair it with Bluetooth speakers to stream your favorite music, podcasts, and more in your home whenever you want. You can also make calls and listen to texts all hands-free.

    Accessories

Ecobee’s SmartSensors work with both models. Your SmartThermostat comes with one SmartSensor; the Ecobee3 Lite doesn’t come with any. You can buy SmartSensors a la carte in an $80 two-pack.

The SmartSensors have temperature- and occupancy-sensing technology. If you have rooms in your home that run particularly warm or cool — you can place the SmartSensor there and use that location as the default temperature setting for your thermostat. That way, your home’s set temperature is based on the current temperature in the cold basement office — or the hot upstairs bedroom instead of at the location of the thermostat.

Get smart home reviews and ratings, video reviews, buying guides, prices and comparisons from CNET.

    Which one is better?

Both are capable thermostats. While the Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat doesn’t have as many advanced features as the Ecobee SmartThermostat with VoiceControl, it gives you a lot of control over your heat and air conditioning. If you’re looking for a simple way to manage your HVAC system from your phone, the Ecobee3 Lite is worth your money. You still receive features like Vacation Mode, seven-day programming, compatibility with Ecobee’s wireless sensors and much more. And if your thermostat is located somewhere that’s lightly trafficked, where you wouldn’t commonly use voice commands or a smart speaker, the Ecobee3 Lite is a better choice.

If you want a SmartSensor and a thermostat with its own occupancy sensor, the SmartThermostat makes the most sense. It comes with a SmartSensor that makes real-time adjustments based on a room’s temperature, occupancy and more. The system can also play your favorite music through Spotify. And with integrated Alexa voice control, you can command your thermostat with the confidence of a James Bond villain.

Oct 10 Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat with Built-In Alexa – Your Smart Home Gets Smarter

Smart homes are the future and for a smart home to be smart it actually needs something that actually can keep its ambient plesant, and here is where the Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat with built-in Alexa comes in. Yes, that’s right we are going to review a smart thermostat, because being energy efficient and green is what makes a home really smart.

Ecobee has been in the thermostat business for a very long time now and they really made a name for themselves in the process with products like the Ecobee 3 Lite, Ecobee 3 and now the Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat with built-in Alexa. We are not goint to talk about the previus Ecobee 3 genertion as at this point the Ecobee 4 is something you should take in consideration when building your smart home.

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

The Ecobee 4 comes with a slick design, touch screen display as well as temperature and motion/proximity detection sensor. It can also be a nice accessory for tracking rooms with hot or cold spots and it is available in either white or black case.

The Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat comes with a power extender kit as well included in the package, and since it requires a C-wire to operate, you can use the power extender kit to add in the extra wire without rewiring your entire smart home system.

What makes the Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat actually smart

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

The Ecobee 4 comes with an administration pannel, and you can connect to it by simply downloading the app for either Android or iOS and follow the step-by-step instructions. Setting up the thermostat takes only a few minutes with the app, and once the thermostat is connected to your local area network, you can simply load the app and access it with your mobile phone. There is also a web app that can be used to access the thermostat from your laptop if you wish to do so.

The Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat is also compatible with a lot of smart home partners like Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings and IFTTT. And, instead of simply integrating with an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot or Tap speaker, the Ecobee 4 doubles as an Alexa speaker. Just as you would with a standalone device, you can ask Alexa to tell you a joke, to turn on your fan or to adjust your room temperature.

How to use your ecobee smart thermostat with alexa

Adding other smart home integrations takes a little longer than the initial configuration, but it’s still very straightforward. We linked the Ecobee 4 to HomeKit’s Home app in iOS 12 (we did not have the chance to test it with iOS 13 just yet), as well as to a shared Amazon account. From here, we were able to control the thermostat with Siri via HomeKit and with Alexa directly from the Ecobee 4 thermostat.

Everything we tried worked well. Adjusting the thermostat at the source, with the mobile or web app as well as with Siri or Alexa voice control, and everything went just perfect. Adding an Alexa speaker to the thermostat also provided an additional layer of smarts.

The Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat became something like a central hub in the home, a place where we could ask Alexa for the weather, turn Alexa-enabled lighting on and off and more.

Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat Pricing and Conclusion

The Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat is a top-of-the-line product and it retails at $249. Ecobee har really shifted the paradigm with this product, making it the best smart thermostat available right now. If you ask yourself why to actually buy this? Well simple: it is a really cool peace of technology, reliable and it is actually very usefull in day by day usage.
