Do you ever go to sleep simply dreading the sound your alarm will make to wake you up in the morning? Well, thanks to Apple Music, now you can wake up to any song or playlist you want on your iOS device.

    Make the Song Available Offline

First, tap into your Apple Music (you must have an active subscription to take advantage of the feature), and find the song you want to use to set as your alarm.

In the bottom right corner of the song’s tile, you’ll see an icon that looks like three dots, highlighted below:

Click on this, and you’ll see the option for “Make Available Offline”. Click this, after which the song will be downloaded locally to your device.

    Set Up a New Alarm

Set up a new alarm using the plus icon in the top right corner, and after you’ve selected the time you want it to go off, you’ll see the option to choose the sound you’ll hear underneath the alarm’s label.

iOS: If you listen to podcasts in the morning, maybe you should jump right into one from the moment you wake up. Next Up synchs with Apple’s Podcasts app to turn your favorite podcast into your alarm clock.

I’m against using your favorite music as an alarm , because you’ll associate the song with stress. But unlike music, you usually listen to a podcast just once. And as your chosen show gets your attention, you can move past “ugh what is consciousness” mode and start absorbing information (if Comedy Bang! Bang! counts as “information”).

Don’t Set Your Alarm to Your Favorite Song

When you use your phone as your alarm clock, you might think that you want to wake up to your…

Next Up is slick and well-executed. It has several options for finessing your alarm, repeating it on certain days, tying the alarm volume to your phone volume, and choosing your play order.

If your podcast doesn’t load, or doesn’t have a new episode, the app has backup sounds, sorted by calm vs. abrasive vs. “eclectic.” The app also includes a simple white noise player and a selection of recommended wake-up podcasts.

There’s one big limitation: The app doesn’t integrate with third-party podcast apps, or let you directly subscribe to podcasts. It only uses podcasts that you’ve subscribed to in the Apple Podcasts app.

If you usually get your podcasts through a different app, the setup will feel a little awkward. It works best if you stick to a couple of specific podcasts to always be your morning alarm, rather than jumping between many shows.

Other than that, this is everything I’d want to see from a podcast alarm clock. But I’m sure you creative wakers will think of a feature worth adding.

Goodbye, terrible Radar tone, hello, song of your choice.

Jumping out of bed to the shrill sound of the default Radar ringtone of an iPhone alarm is no way to start the day. As far back as iOS 6, you have been able to set your iPhone alarm to play a song from your music library. And with iOS 8, you can grab songs from Apple Music to use as your alarm sound.

In Apple Music, you simply need to add a song to My Music in order to use it as your alarm. When you find the song you’d like to wake to, tap the triple-dot button on the right and then select Add to My Music.

With a song added to My Music, close Apple Music and open the Clock app. From the Alarm tab, either tap Edit to edit an existing alarm or tap the + button to add a new alarm.

On the Edit Alarm screen, tap Sound. Next, tap Pick a song and then either search for your song or navigate to it via Artists, Albums, Songs or another grouping. When you find the song you want, tap the + button to add to as your alarm sound. Then tap the Back button to return to the Edit Alarm screen and before tapping Save. Goodbye terrible Radar tone, hello song of your choice.

One last note: I added individual songs and entire albums to My Music, either of which allowed me to access a song from the Clock app to set as my alarm sound. When I added a playlist from the For You tab, however, I was unable to use any of its songs as my alarm sound. I could find a playlist I added to My Music from the Clock app, but when I hit the + button to add one of its songs as an alarm sound and returned to the Edit Alarm screen, I was greeted with a blank line instead of the song title, like so:
